  • It's been nearly a year since we dug deep into the turbulent history of Teal in Lego, but we're finally taking a look at another colour today!
Brown may seem like one of Lego's more unassuming colours, but it's actually got a pretty surprising history that spans several years and even several other similar colours!

digital artist here: orange and brown are actually more closely related than most people realize, with brown basically just being dark orange. i think because of how many things in everyday life are brown (animals, trees etc.) our eyes are trained to see it as its own color separate from orange, but it's immediately obvious when you take orange, slide its value down to make it darker, and end up with a color that looks distinctly brown. so, including the lego color "dark orange" in this video is 100% valid.

    • @1colonelsanders
      @1colonelsanders 7 месяцев назад +90

I think it has to do more with the fact that we've given them different names, which makes us think of them as different colors. There's a video on vsauce 2, I think it's called "Why is blue rare" that talks about it. it makes sense when you think about how for us, blue is a large section of the rainbow but others like purple are pretty small. Or how light green is just a kind of green to us, but light red is a different color called pink.

The Reddish Brown brittleness issue reminds me of Gold Plastic Syndrome in Transformers toys. Basically the gold powder that Hasbro and Takara would introduce into mold to make the gold plastic shiny would interfere with the polymer bonds, and make it so the toys will self destruct over time. The process is chemical, so it will happen to a toy sitting on a shelf, but physical stresses speed it up. Beast Wars Neo Randy is infamous for it. (For the Europeans reading this, Randy is Japanese exclusive toy using a relatively normal name for an American man. I know that's an unfortunate name over where you are.) Randy is a spring loaded auto transformer with a beast mode whose entire outer shell is made from the gold plastic. He will tear himself apart in sealed package. If you type Gold Plastic Syndrome into the google search bar the first result should be a guy absolutely obliterating a Randy by squeezing it with one hand.

Orange is actually brown, and brown is orange. Technology Connections channel did a wonderful video about the color brown, and how it really isnt a color we think it is, its just really dark orange we gave a special name to. Look at those LED you use in this video, notice how they give you an orange lighting. Thats because brown is orange, just turning the brightness down. So Pohatu being orange in 2008 makes complete sense (all of the Phantoka had lighter colors as oppose to the Mistika dark colors), and why dark orange/burnt orange was used on Hewkii Matoran and G2 Pohatu.

7:23 A "skeleton crew" is a term used for when an industry, usually in an effort to save on labor costs, uses the absolute minimum number of workers necessary to keep an operation running at or near standard capacity. Those following US news may remember several major train accidents that were caused, in part, by railroad corporations using "skeleton crews" to operate trains. These workers often have to work a lot of overtime, are unable to take sick leave, and have no choice but to skimp on inspections in order to keep on schedule.
So yes, two crew members running an entire pirare ship would, in fact, be a skeleton crew, regardless of wheter any or all of those crew members are actual, literal skeletons.

This video is SO nostalgic to me, aaaaaa. When I was really little, my older sibling was super into Bionicles, and I have so many memories of playing with them (or my sibling playing and me fucking things up). Fun Fact, somewhere in my house there is still a metal folding chair with a brown Bionicle facemask (?) block padlocked onto one of the bars connecting the legs. I don't remember whose doing this was, but it'll stay there forever, because no one remembers the combination to unlock it!

I was there on the frontlines when they changed greys. There was a huge uproar and many collectors and builders including myself just dropped out.
I understand why the change was made and I think it was for the best. I'm still interested in Lego and its history but I can count the amount of sets I've bought since 2004 on one hand.

Lego may not have officially changed any newer colors, but there is definitely a very significant change in the pearl gold pieces. Or "warm gold" as Lego calls them.
Newer pieces of that color are much more warm and saturated, almost looking orange.
Some of them look so vastly different that you couldn't even use them in the same set without it looking wrong.
I know some lego parts of the same color can differ slightly, but for pearl gold the change is ridiculous. Even more noticable than dark grey and datk bluish gray.

I had to look for their pieces in 6 different old toy boxes, and I still have 3 incomplete characters in that same box. I never got more than 3 different figures, so I should be on the lookout at flea markets someday.

I like that Greg Farshtey, the guy who wrote the books for Bionicle, always had the characters bring up the fact that the brown characters weren’t brown anymore. I always thought it was a funny nod to the fans who were probably also confused why the brown ones weren’t brown anymore. I didn’t actually know the real reason for that change until this video though, that they just weren’t selling well, and that tracks but it also makes me want to value the brown Bionicles a little more, they didn’t get the love they deserved

While I was watching this video, I ended up getting very comfy to the point where I fell asleep halfway through and part of my dream involved an old teacher of mine giving me information about certain lego bricks you mentioned later in the video. Not only that, but also i got on this weird 4D-style ride in this one dude's tent, and he was a REALLY big fan of lego stuff cause there were wacky little lego seta and lego buckets all over the place (made the ride more interesting when we started doing loops and such)
    Dreams are fun :)

I have had the figures from Galidor (specifically the Happy Meal ones) in the back of my mind for near a decade now but had no idea what to call them or how to find them. Thank you so much, my eyes are open and I can finally breathe easily knowing exactly what the hell that random thing was.

Brown is way underrated. My favorite brown Legos were the tall 2x2 base crates that they included in some of the Indiana Jones sets. Same for the 2x3 base ones shown at 0:20. Surprisingly versatile.

Brown actually is just orange. However, so many things around us have the same combination of colors that we practically see it as a color in and of itself. It really is dim orange light that is scattered of a surface, with grey and black undertones. It also doesn't really look that much like the unique color we know as brown unless it is in context with contrasting colors. If you were to have the light from a brown wall filling your entire field-of-vision, you would likely percieve it as a dim, dingy orange, rather than as brown.
That's why there is no such thing as brown light, as it only exists as a color in our brain, not as a particular span of wavelengths of light.
