The History of Teal Lego

- I was pleasantly surprised by how well received my first Lego video was, so today I'm back with another one looking into one of Lego's most interesting colours rather than just one goofy piece I liked, teal!
Most colours have a very simple history when it comes to Lego, not having much of a history to delve into at all, but teal has been though far more than you would probably expect over the years.
Also, reminder to check out R.R. Slugger's channel, they're a huge factor in my recent appreciation for this colour and have some phenomenal videos!

Surprisingly, it’s also SUPER hard to create Bionicle MOCs with purple. Ironically it was released even more limited than teal, despite never being discontinued.
Purple is like a little extra depressing too cause while we actually did get new purple stuff in Hero Factory and Bionicle G2 it's a different shade compared to what we got in 2001 and it's so noticeable
@@BigYellowSilly you should make a vid about purple
And probably talk about the night bus sets from LEGO Harry Potter, those are fan favorite since they have A TON of purple bricks to recreate the purple bus from the third movie
Voriki fans feel only unending, soulcrushing pain
Technically, the purple used in Bionicle figures like a Nui-Jaga or Technic Competition sets like Cyber Strikers *is* discontinued. The purple we see today is called Dark Purple. Dark Purple has a lot more parts available for MOCs.
As a kid I loved Halo (way back before the megablock sets) and back at my dad's house I have quite a few white Lego pieces covered in purple sharpie because I wanted to make a Ghost.
The fact that Lego made Mark Stafford straight up Sophie's choice teal and purple is unforgivable
Honestly made the right call back then. Purple is more iconic and can you imagine the Serpentine or Nindroid sets with Teal instead of Purple?
Missed opportunity to say "that's like calling orange big yellow"
I had no idea the Lego Lore ran this deep, but I'm hooked.
Good. Now..." come with me, and you'll see. A world of inventory tabulations. You will find parts that exclude explanation."
Thank you so much for the heartfelt shoutout! ❤️
I really enjoyed your history of the Lego Energy Crystal video and this one was yet another banger! I’m looking forward to whatever Lego topic you choose to tackle next. 😊
Hey, it’s the guy. Nice going, guy.
You're welcome! I've really enjoyed your recent coverage of Time Cruisers, it was a theme I only knew from those 'The Worst Lego Sets Ever???' lists but seeing some genuine appreciation for them has been really fun!
Never thought I’d see these two worlds collide but I’m enthusiastic for it!
@@BigYellowSilly And thank you, for introducing me to R. R. Slugger's channel. I have been wanting to find a good slightly nostalgic review series of Rock Raiders, and now it falls in my lap. Brilliant! And also thanks for continuing this series. This is going to be a resource for Lego information on par, with Cheesey Studios Revisiting series, or Nick on Planet Ripple's Lego Rewind series. Thank you for this. I deeply appreciate it.
I saw the "weird minifigure guy" in the vid and it made me extremely nostalgic. Because my older brother had so much lego that he allowed me to play with and there was this one funky large dude. I don't know why, but... I clinged onto him. For almost all my life, I gingerly loved this tiny but very nicely articulated guy, and let him interact with my LPS characters in games and stories... for some reason, this brought bad so much nice memories, thank you very much. The LEGO trivia is an amazing thing to listen to while the insomnia hits 😭😭😭
What pieces did it have?
@@oliverpuppetproductions8753 well it was the "minifig" itself, it wasn't really separable. It had a head with a molded nose, smirky face abd side swept black hair, the body looked like black leather coat I guess? Maybe a bit of a bomber jacket. And blue legs.
But the articulation on him was fenomenal! So smooth and wide, even though he needed a bit of help with standing up by himself because the ankle joints to his feet feels a bit wobbly.
@@agnycat7458 cool, I believe you are talking about jack stone, im not sure 100% which one but look up lego jack stone minifies and you'll probably find it
Are you thinking about the other large minifigure that comes with the purple version of the large tracked robot with hand-operated cantilever bopper? The legs and arms have a hinged knee, elbow and wrist joints and the hips, feet, shoulders and neck all have ball joints. The Jack Stone minifigures don't have as many articulated joints so they're not nearly as capable of being posed.
@@CATASTEROID934 jack stone has a molded nose and isn't really separable so I think I'm probably right
Imma be real. These weird, "random" videos, might be some of my favorite. I'm just someone who's fond of talking at length about the most trivial things imaginable with an unwarranted level of passion. So when I find content with that sort of energy, I just can't get enough.
Me too
It's kind of a bummer that teal had such a short run in Bionicle. I can imagine an alternate run of the series where basically every lime green part was replaced with teal and that just sounds cool as hell. 2008 Lewa in teal and that Phantoka-standard dark bluish gray would've slapped so hard.
But in this alternate reality, we're complaining about teal joints breaking. Do you really want to go there? ;D
2007 Hahli with teal joints actually seems pretty cool?
honestly if theyd made teal a staple color for air and tried using purple a bit more for earth it wouldve been rad, i can only imagine the teal Lewa and purple Onua in 08
alternatively to get more purple we could just pretend that Voriki is canon :P
But that raises the question of whether teal joints would have been as fragile as lime, since it was either a chemical reaction specific to the lime pigment or an unidentified impurity in the lime plastic that caused the joints to be brittle that may not have been present in teal.
**teal lesovikk**
that zeal for teal line was pretty clean
There's something crazy about realizing I lived through the "release" of teal into Lego history, and REMEMBERING that as I kid I recognized the fact that I hadn't seen the color before in Legos. I was huge into Lego at the time (Rock Raiders really was stinkin cool) so just knowing that there's a bin back in my parent's house with at least a couple of sets with Teal in them is just... heartwarming somehow.
In an alternate timeline, perhaps we'd be celebrating the triumphant return of purple, while commisserating over the rarity of teal pieces despite it never being discontinued.
Your videos always feel like a hyperfixation, I love that!
Finally, Bionicle featuring prominently in a Big Yellow vid. Love to see it.
It's always so weird to me seeing the Technic Competition stuff and knowing it would eventually become the concept base for the 2001 Rahi sets
Explains a lot about the Tarakava.
@@a-s-greig yeah that's the real obvious one but in general the entire line crosses over a lot, it's pretty sick
I see a big yellow video with a literal bionicle in the thumbnail you've got me, you pinned down my niche even further idk how you did that
This RUclipsr is the only one that can do in depth fighting game content analysis and then the next day they do a 30 mins lego video with the same amount of care and passion
It's beautiful, keep it going
Wow, teal appeared in 98? It's pretty damn modern color for that era.
I love the fact that there are people out there who passionately make 20 minutes long videos about one obscure Lego brick colour. Because that is exactly what I love to watch in my free time. Great research!
am curious about “THAT period” that you referenced where lego was gettin a little freakazoid cus they were broke, would love to hear more about it!
When you say Teal Lego, I say "Rock Raiders." The Rock Raiders theme used this colour extensively throughout their builds and made it a defining part of the theme's aesthetic.
I miss OG dark gray, it looked so much better for rocks and stone walls
It gave the Rahkshi a more sinister shade than the more sterile grey that started in 2004.
teal lego is pretty good in the scrumblobimbus sets released in 2083, its set's color scheme fits teal pretty well, that being dark purple with a tinge of red, if you somehow have not heard. it is quite good in these sets for bingbaosid's shell and cat ears. i think there's a lego pack called "shitty blue colors" that has a lot of teal accessories n bricks and other shit. you seem to be a big fan of the teal piece, so i'm just letting you know a good use for the teal pieces, or at least some accessories that are not very popular.
Hold up, LEGO swears in the future‽ 😰
I never would have thought people were hunting for lego colors. This boggles me, thank you.
Just assume any lego piece that's rare or discontinued, either as a color or specific part, is sought after for the sake of collectability
I really appreciate it. But being that I grew up during the most limited color era of Lego, I myself favor a limited pallet.
If there's niche markets for virtual cosmetic items, then there's definitely a Lego market and id assume maybe even a black market...
@@Jeff4theRaid Actually you raise a good point, I bet in the age of 3D printing bootleg legos are either already here or soon will be. Getting the exact specs and quality down is probably difficult but not impossible, it's amusing to think about shady figures making illicit deals over bucketfuls of obscure bricks but that's probably the timeline we're living in.
You mentioning Mars Mission completely unlocked a memory for me, I had a few of those sets as a kid and they were some of my favorite. The little Martian figures that came with them were really cool
I'm in my teal lego era
don't ask me what this means im drunk
Big yellow might be my favorite Lego channel on RUclips currently
the teal hashtag on the video is awesome. i hope to see more teal videos on youtube in the future
Can't wait for the 8 hour video detailing the life, rise and fall of Rocket Racer.
Don't forget his return in LEGO City Stuntz.
dark terquoise is the quintesential lego color to me. when i think of lego, i think of this color, so its nice to see the color make a comeback
Can you talk about Delibird’s niche in Gen 2 OU? It’s really quite perplexing
Surely this is a jape there's no way it has one
@@BigYellowSilly im going to pretend they meant the fact it can spike and rapid spin, despite being hot garbage at both jobs, and has a """""niche""""" because unlike others that can also do that it's immune to spikes...
@@BigYellowSilly its niche is being a silly little guy :]
Its niche is being a bundle of Christmas Spirit. The other guy's niche is a bundle of -iron- pain, and then getting banned to Ubers
@@grunkleg.3110 The other guy's niche is being modern Christmas: annoyingly shiny and neon.
Never thought I would ever watch someone talk about a Lego piece for an extended period of time and you've made me do it twice now. Bravo, Big Yellow. Well played.
god I love teal
i could watch you make a video on fucking paper towels and i would still be 100% invested. this is the TRUE variety content i subscribed for. thank you.
Didn't realize I'd be this interested in the history of lego colors until it was presented to me. Very cool to see.
your weirdly specific pokemon videos plus your weirdly specific lego videos have quickly made you my favorite weirdly specific youtuber
I don’t blame Mark for picking purple, it’s by far the more useful color and it would just be weird to get rid of such a dominant color like purple
I also have the teal brick separator! I think I might have other teal pieces, but I'd have to look through a lot a bins of bricks.
I saw the Plankton tweet and was REALLY hoping another in=depth lego brick analysis was in the pipeline. Thank you, Large Mustard
I love big yellow content
Me too
"That's like if Bionicles were called Masked Bots" as opposed to like, a portmanteau of "Bionic" and "People", perhaps?
Oh shit this is a good one I can already tell. Teal is such a neat color, has connections to powerminers too. I made a build around a teal printed power miners piece in bricklink studio, was a lot of fun.
big leggow pog
Dark Turquoise has always been my favorite color and i'm so glad it made a comeback in recent years
so, teal was always just glanced at here and there, was then fucking murdered in a telltale style choose who dies scenario
and came back with a burning vengeance to become a decently used color overall while somehow getting the spotlight as a brick seperator, competing with the color orange of all things
what a fucking legend
I should really get started with my school assignment
honestly this is one of the best videos i've seen in a while. It's not obnoxious, not trying to explain things as fast as possible, it just has it's own pace. You can really digest the information here quite easily and i greatly appreciate that. Thanks for showing up in my recommends lol, this vid pretty much made my day
Big Yellow rants are always fun
I LOVE THE LEGO COLOUR TEAL AND I LOVE HYPER SPECIFIC LONG FORM DEEP DIVE VIDEOS, THANK YOU FOR THIS CREATION
I don't get anything about Lego but it's always fun to watch people talk about stuff they love
This is just honestly a happy ending to this color
I need all of your videos with like nightclub ambiance so i can imagine that some goober is explaining the nuanced history of lego bricks to me at a party
Love the apocalyptic sinister demon summoning vibes of The Room in this vid!
I know nothing about Lego but now I’m interested because Big Yellow can make anything entertaining.
Also, the music selection is incredible
Those "odd figures" are Technic figures. They were quite common in the 80s and 90s. Had a tendency to break an arm if you dropped them on the floor...
Love how you're talking about whatever the hell you want.
history of the yellow lego better be at least an hour. gotta live up to your name
I didn't like this color and I was bothered that it's fcking everywhere now, I didn't know it was discontinued for ten years. The fact that it came back it pretty cool, I don't know any other discontinued color that made a comeback. I'd love to see a return of blue-violet, that color is sick. You made me appreciate teal more, (or as I call it, dark turquoise, since that's what's it's called on bricklink) I might get some of it and make a cool moc.
Realy love that shade.
Yo! your videos just keep getting better. Love your stuff!!!
you’re making me want to get into lego again
I genuinely laughed when you moved the Power Miner set into its tower mode and said "this set is pretty badass" because I was literally smiling and thinking the same thing!!!
how is it that i’ve gone from hyperfixation to hyperfixation just watching your videos alone
I loved those 1998 technic sets! The large figures reminded me of crash test dummies. Also the punchers and launchers were cool
When I was younger I went to this robotics camp that had lego mindstorms and big bins of assorted pieces. Everytime I saw a teal piece, I would put them together and collect it in my bin. Eventually I had a big 2x4x ~10 block. Good times…
Glad to see you finally got around to checking out the power miner command rig!
I got a lot of my older cousins lego when I was around 5, I never new the origin of pieces but this video cleared a lot of that up when I saw the rock raiders sets. I now also understand why my own dark grey pieces and my cousins dark grey pieces didn't match😂
Something about your content and music choice just scratches my brain just right
I actually remember when Rock Raiders was on store shelves. I never got into it, but my cousin had some of the sets. And I can't remember if I _owned_ that weird purple and teal technic set, or just remember it very vividly from the catalog. I actually had both Turbo _and_ Amazon though!
Oh my God I actually remember the catalog. That's boomer as fuck.
I would love to see you talk about the other Big 3’s
I've searched Bionicle teal mocs, they look amazing. Great video dude
I do really enjoy when you spend a lot of time rambling about Lego. It’s fun to watch
I was obsessed with this color in the late 90s, I had that first Technic set with the weird figure, I had that Slizer, I had a bunch of Rock Raiders, and I got every Bionicle set I could with that color. My hope was to one day make a teal Toa Mata, but I don't think they ever made the Toa Mata body in that color so I never did. I had almost every other part I needed, but no body.
def me when lego
Also your lighting kinda fits with how my day went/how am doing today now at night lol. Nice,I guess
Thank goodness the teal scourge finally came to an end.
Hearing about Rock Raiders brings so much nostalgia. I loved those sets as a kid. And if I might say, I would have think the main focus of their design was to drive home the fact that their machines were nothing more but rugged mining vehicles, rather then being bombastic like Power Miners.
I think you could make a video on any random subject that crossed your mind and make it super deep and interesting, you show a lot of passion in the content you make, gets me inspired!
15:09 I grew up with all of these themes! They were all really great! I also should mention Galaxy Squad & Pharaoh’s Quest. Now we just have Ninjago still around as well as Monkey Kid has some decent sets & they occasionally make a few sets from licensed themes that are really impressive like the Daily Bugle as well. Most of my teal pieces come from the Ninjago Teal Jungle Dragon as well as the 9 teal brick separators I have.
Such a shame that the only real original themes we have these days are ones with television series attached to them or generic city-based stuff (yes, LEGO Friends counts as this). Kind of has me even more pumped for that rumored bigger brick-built Tahu in January, you know?
@@SupersuMC Yeah, I agree. Personally I’m looking forward to the rumored Blacktron GWP because I like Space themes & the Galaxy Explorer was my favorite set this year.
I had a few of the Knight's Kingdom II sets as a kid and at least one of them had a chrome silver spear-type weapon piece, and I never was able to figure out why none of my later sets came with anything similar. Wondered that for the longest time but forgot about it for years before seeing this
I think this might be the dorkiest fandom I've ever run into but like... dorkiest (complimentary), interesting as fuck and just kind of makes me happy to know it exists
This is a lovely little love letter to my favorite color, lego teal :p thanks so much for this
I really wish they did a chief reprint
Also I absolutely love how you succesfully integrated LEGO content in a channel primarely focused on Fighting games and Niche ways to play Competitive Pokémon
I came in for fighting game videos and somehow landed on a channel that talks about basically everything I'm interested in, how in the name of fuck did that happen.
Keep up a great job, can't wait for more!
Man, I found your videos because I enjoyed your competitive Pokémon history videos. But man these random niche videos are peak goodness. One day I’ll just wake up and see a video on something like bayblades from ya haha
Omg teal lego is my favorite, esp kongu and the tarakava. I was obsessed as a kid. I havent even started the video yet, I’m just so excited to see this
Those teal and purple cannons from the 90s Technic are probably my favourite Lego pieces, used them in many Bionicle-esque builds and also shot them at friends many times.
The two piece body core of Slicers/Throwbots is also up there with how much I used it as a base.
That ending gag is gonna be so incomprehensible after enough years. And that's a good thing, quality videos of the past should beget annotations for modern viewers.
I remember having teal lego pieces, I remember the color gave me a headache as a kid so I hid them far at the bottom of my lego containers. I'm pretty sure I still have them somewhere.
I have no idea why lego history is so engaging.
We need more videos like this out there
DuckBricks had a big moc contest for Lariska and the grand prize was custom casted teal Bionicle mask and armor.
The dark panther set was one of my favorites... but it killed off such a cool color
Love your videos. Always fun and interesting to watch. Also the music in your videos slap.
i like how at the end he changes his mind
The teal color brick is esthetically pleasing but I hate having so many of these pieces not knowing what to make with these parts from the Minecraft sets
I found your channel due to rby stuff and I just got back into lego and I find this. What great timing
Love watching funny yellow person talk about random topics, very cool. Quality content :)
Teal and purple are such good colors... Never had and still don't have the McToran in those colors but ugh they're both such good little creatures...
I didn't know I had teal until I looked at my Marvel's What If Hulkbuster
these kind of retrospective topics rule (I’ve always enjoyed your other topics too ofc, fighting games pokemon and misc)
Man, I grew up on golden age Lego, great time to be a kid
