Excellent! So many tutorials gloss over the tricky bits. You do not. It's so helpful to have hints, tips and techniques shared....eg. the row of stitching inside the seam for clipping to. Also, I now know how a quilting bar works! Thanks. I'll be back for more. 😊
Great tutorial. Clear and concise with no unnecessary waffle. I loved the point you made about how we accept imperfections in things we buy, and expect perfection in things we make ourselves. So many times I have wasted hours trying to redo areas not perfect, sometimes even ditching them, and then noticing something in my wardrobe store bought with exactly the same imperfection that I had never noticed.
Thank you for the pattern. I do think it's easier to make two hats and sew together. I do like the tip on clipping the curves before sewing the crown to the brim and marking the quarter sections.
I have never made a hat before until I watched your video. Wow! You made it so easy. Your style makes the hat look so much more professional. Another "scrap material " project for me. Thank you so much . Donna
This is the best bucket hat tutorial. Thank you for drafting the pattern and sharing it. I just finished making one for myself and I absolutely love it! I love the way you assemble and finish it. My hat fits perfectly. Again, thank you so much. I can't wait to make more!
Thank you so much for sharing this method. It makes for a great finished bucket hat, with NO pull thru and sew the hole up. I love it and am going to do this. Again, thank you so very much!
Thank you so much for this video! I was in the middle of making a reversible sun hat (just a bit longer brim than the bucket hat) using a pattern similar to the one you have, but I got stuck. Your video was exactly what I needed to watch to figure out how to proceed, and then finish my hat! Your comments on challenges that can happen were very helpful as well. Excellent job!
Your tip on clipping the crown and the band makes so much sense. This will be the way I do it on my next hat! Making the crown fit the band is the most difficult part.
Love the tip to make a stitching line inside of the seam allowance and then clip before sewing the actual seam! That will make it much easier to match the curves! Thank you!
Thank you! Undergoing chemo and been looking for the right hat to keep my head from getting sunburned. Discovered my tastes and those of hat makers aren’t the same. Now I can make my own! I’m So excited to give this a try !
Your video is excellent!!!! I’m following your tutorial after watching many hat tutorials on RUclips. I find yours the nos comprehensive and professional. Thank you so much for such detailed explanation. 👏👏👏
This is a great tutorial. I have made a few bucket hats this year and while they're all cute, the top and side panels always looked a little messy on the top. The way you did it made it look the best I've ever done it. Thank you!!
I’ve watched a few videos now showing various ways of putting these hats together and I think yours is the best. I like the way you prepared the body of the hat with the row of stitching and clipping the edges, I think it will be easier to attach the top circle piece. I have one alteration to make to the pattern, my daughter would like a hole for her ponytail and I’ve worked out how to do that so I’m looking forward to having a go at one of these. Thanks for the clear instructions!
Thank you very much for your reply. I actually tried out the oil cloth idea.... and yes, it might not be 100% waterproof but a bigger problem was that when I was almost finished and delighted with the result, my needle 'hit' a thickish spot and 'died'!! I was taken by surprise and disappointment as the the needle didn't even break. I await the verdict of the sewing machine repair man nex! It may be an expensive hat! 🤩😂
Brilliant tutorial-thank you! Can’t wait to make this for my walks in the sun! A wee tip when clipping out the bulk: snip one side of the notch all the way around, then flip and do your second snip into the first...will save loads of stress on your wrists and much faster!
Thank you for the pattern and tutorial. I just finished my first bucket hat and can’t wait to make more. It was very easy with your tutorial. Thank you again!
Thank you! Based on other tutorials I have been trying to make bucket hats using the leave a gap in the brim and pull everything through method. It's hard to get the inner and outer layers of the hat lined up with each other properly that way. I like your way better. I have also been struggling with getting the top circle sewn on to the mid section but you explained it so clearly, I think it will be easy now.
Absolutely agree with others, fantastic tutorial and the hat, well have made one following your instructions and have to say it fits me perfectly. you have inspired me to make another. Thank you .
Lovely old Bernina. One of the 1000 series, I have a few models in that range and love them. I've been making sun hats for me for a year or so with curtain blackout fabric in the brim for better UV protection. My husband needs one now too and this has a less fuller brim which he'd prefer so I'll try it for him. 🙂 I use broadly the same order of construction apart from only topstitching the edge of the brim initially and wait to do all the parallel rows until after the hat is constructed. It's less fiddly to join the hat sides and brim this way and also easier to get your brim rows evenly spaced as they approach the inner seam line. I like quite narrow rows so use the edge of my foot with my needle furthest left.
Just made a new one today with your method, came out perfect. Been sewing all my life, I am 84, wondered why the other videos don"t tell you to clip around. Cause there is no way to fit those pieces together without doing that. s
I guess I have a larger head because my hat was too snug lol! I did go ahead & finish making it. Maybe I can find someone who’s head is smaller! Cute hat!
This is an awesome video and the end result is beautiful! I wish that you would have used a different lining fabric, there are points where it was a little hard to follow br ause of that detail
Thanks os much for your kind comments and yes I'll ponder fabric choices a bit longer next time. what was it in particular that made that choice tricky?
Hi! I am just finding your pattern and would like to try it. I am hoping you have instructions for measuring the head. I would so appreciate having them. Thank you for this darling hat!!
Thank you very much for this video. I'm going to make a hat following this instruction. I downloaded the pattern. Does the pattern include seam allowance or do I need to add seam allowance?
Great tutorial. Just a reminder, never sew over pins. They can both mess up the timing on the machine, and break needles, sending them flying, sometimes right into your eye. Place the pins from the outside in so the head is to the right of the needle, it is mucu easier to remove them as you sew.

Awesome tutorial! Thank you! Tried to add pic but can't see an option. This was a perfect size for me but I should say I have a small head! Took me about 3 hours.
Great tutorial. i'm a relative novice but so happy with my first attempt at a bucket hat. Made out of two fat quarters - it looks fab. Everybody who has seen it now wants one!
Great tutorial and i love how you explain in detail. I watched so many tutorials and this is the one I will follow. May I suggest to use pinking shear to reduce the bulk and pull out pins when you get closer to them while sewing.. I flinch every time I see the sewing needle stitching over the pins as I worry about the sewing needle breaking. I personally do Not sew over pins and I was taught that way. Thank you again for this great tutorial. I will be making my first bucket hat 😊
So glad you enjoyed it Irene and thanks for your tips... Sewing over pins does carry risks but sometimes leaving those pins in does get a better finish as nothing ever moves! Take care and good luck with your hat. xx
If there is a risk even as slight risk and having the sewing needle break when sewing over the pins, I will not risk it. Just the thought of the broken piece of the sharp pointy needle hitting my face or or worst my eyes… is not worth the risk of making sure the pins hold the fabrics in place better. I pull the pins out as close as I can before the sewing needle can stitch over the pins and there are other pins holding the rest of the fabric in place so it will still hold the fabrics together. I think safety is first and foremost in everything that I do. Imho.

@sueoreiro703 I hope you are doing better.. I am also going through chemo at the moment and love this hat! @madeandmaking2170 love your tutorial, thank you!! and what a gorgeous linen.... where did you buy it from?
Hi there, thank you for sharing this video, on how to make the bucket hat, but what is the measurements for the bucket hat, I mean the lengths & the depth, I'm not sure I can guess at this.
I am not quite sure what you mean by the length but the depth can be measured by measuring the band that goes around the hat... I don't actually have one close to me that I can measure.Does the head circumference measurement not help?
What interfacing did you use? What weight or stiffness? Thank you for this tutorial. It was very helpful and has inspired me to make a bucket hat for my sister.
