  • @joeschmo5782
    @joeschmo5782 Год назад +62

    This video makes 3 points I've felt since last year to be honest when it comes to this Pitts situation:
    1.) Defenses have adjusted to the trendy "Shannahan" passing concepts. Anytime Kyle Shannahan starts to drift away from a staple philosophy or concept, or even tweaks it, that should be a red flag in my mind.
    2.) Smith has a weird aversion to the "layup" pass plays. Like the pass game is reserved exclusively for explosive plays. The glance routes, the quick screens, I mean why not throw in some horizontal stretching concepts with some Dragon, Lion or Hank concepts? At least then, you're getting your players in a rhythm, attacking typical coverages seen these days, and playing into the strengths of your QB and skill players (namely Pitts and London). I almost feel like if he copied and pasted much of what LaFleur has done in Green Bay up until this year, the pass game would be so much more productive. They have the personnel for it.
    3.) Other than Zaccheus, I don't know that I see any Falcons receivers or Pitts making adjustments to their routes based on leverage or coverage. So many of them seem to just "set and forget" and run their routes without any thought. I wonder if this is a coaching problem or a player problem.

    • @zackhurwitz9441
      @zackhurwitz9441 Год назад +10

      You had to have coached or played ball.
      Another concept I never see them run is cross formation drags flat routes, off a play action front side or a naked waggle.
      I think it's a total offensive issue, as Bret somewhat illuded to.
      1) Between Smith's play calling/scheme and his personal dependence on the run, specifically the outside zone, to open up any of the looks they might get in the passing game, it's a very narrow group of looks for Pitts.
      2) Mariota's limitations as a passer
      3) Not illuded to in the video. TEs in this offense (regardless of who they are) have had slumps in production, but it's almost always been on the limits of the QB. Hell, for the first time this year, Kittle is just now starting to resemble the player he's been in the past. Once those easy, short looks off play action that QBs like Garopolo and Mariota can actually hit are taken away, he's effectively gone. It's either there or it isn't.
      The only solution to unlocking Pitts is either Desmond Ridder panning out, or finding a true QB of the future.
      Off the wall idea, an amazing fit for Lamar Jackson would be ATL. He's a supercharged, cranked to 15 version of Mariota and Ridder, and loves TEs. If there's another coach I would trust to build around Jackson, other than Greg Roman it would be either Sirriani or Arthur Smith.

    • @koodigocrxzy465
      @koodigocrxzy465 Год назад +4

      that would def be a coaching issue

    • @jessepinkman876
      @jessepinkman876 Год назад +1

      When it’s multiple players I’d say it’s a coaching issue.

    • @joeschmo5782
      @joeschmo5782 Год назад +3

      @@zackhurwitz9441 See I think the issue is Smith already has a QB and skill players who have complementary skills, they're just not used in a complementary way. Mariota's strengths lie in having a quick release with accuracy in the short area, and he's average at the intermediate level. Between Pitts, London, Zaccheus, Edwards, Patterson, Allgeier, Avery Williams, you have guys who can not only win in the those areas route wise, but can get you yards after the catch.
      And there's times in this season where they've run concepts and routes that attack the short area of the field and they've been very successful. The problem, and Brett mentioned it in the video, is that even after that happens, Smith falls back into running the same foundational passing concepts that started with Mike Shannahan and Gary Kubiak: Flood, Yankee, Bow, Drift, etc. And he does it in predictable ways whether it's formation, WR splits, or field position. It's almost as if he's stuck on staying loyal to the system instead of his players' skill sets. The only thing he seems to do to "confuse" defenses is run the same concepts but have different players run different routes within the concept.
      Defenses have become wise to the Shannahan concepts to the point even Kyle has stepped away from them and/or evolved and tweaked them. To be a good coach in my opinion, you have to anticipate teams adapting to what you're going to run and have counters ready. To Smith's credit, they have done that in the run game. The pass game, not nearly enough.
      They should be running more screens off of RPOs because it lets guys like Pitts and London get warmed up and get YAC because what DBs want to tackle them all game long. If they overplay that, it gives you a favorable box count where your O-Line is already great at run blocking. Slant/Flat combos, Curl/Flat combos, get the ball out quick and into space. If Pitts or London are solo on the outside with off-coverage, just throw it to them immediately and let them get yards. They did that once in the Rams game and London got 8 yards. Haven't seen it since. The TE screen Pitts almost took to the house against Seattle, one time thing and gone. Zaccheus scored a TD against the Rams on a RPO from a quick slant route. The first time these guys see the ball doesn't always have to be on some deep crosser or post route.
      It's frustrating because they've done the right adjustments in spurts. They just haven't haven't leaned into it at all. Jalen Hurts is more or less living in the schematic world I'm describing and having a fantastic season. Mariota isn't without his issues, absolutely. But to me, the problem is the system that not only he's in, but the rest of the passing offense. I don't think a change at QB is going to solve anything because there's more issues beyond that one position.

    • @zackhurwitz9441
      @zackhurwitz9441 Год назад

      @@joeschmo5782 Couldn't agree more, in terms of your play calling suggestions. The entire principle behind a traditional west coast offense like this is getting players a chance to make something happen after the catch.
      That's Why I volunteered the Lamar Jackson idea, if Arthur Smith won't evolve, then their best outlook is to get a QB that can make him right, at least more often than not.
      He would be more effective than either Mariota or Ridder, with the pairing of his talents within this scheme. No matter how rigid said scheme is, with Smith calling plays.

      Is that really that deep of a question? It seems fairly straightforward, and a direct continuation from 2020 and 2021:
      - Declining offensive line means inadequate protection and lack of punch in the run game.
      - Breaking in a rookie QB who is having some early teething issues.
      - Lack of really reliable every-down targets outside Freiermuth.
      The Steelers have gotten by for a few years now on the fact that their offensive line was very good (at least in run blocking), their defense was elite, and even a declining Big Ben was canny enough to not make mistakes that would take them out of games, for the most part. The offensive line has had turnover, Pickett's having, at best, some rookie teething issues (assuming you think he can sort them out and become The Guy), and losing TJ Watt early has dented the defense enough that it can't carry the team the way it was before.
      That's not to say Matt Canada is secretly a good offensive coordinator and he's being done in by bad personnel. But more that the problems with the Steelers' offense run deeper than who's got the playcaller sheet.

      I wouldn't write off the decision to take Pitts with a high draft pick as a bad one. Coming into the season, Pitts had the 2nd most receiving yards by a rookie TE in NFL history and had 68 receptions with only 1 TD so he was not only a generational talent at the position but also a prime candidate for some positive regression. Factor in the TE wasteland after him and it made sense to take Pitts early.

      literally this whole thing just highlights that people want to take stabs at the Falcons more than actually opening their eyes to see what's going on. Say what you will about Matt Ryan but the dude knew how to get his best receivers the ball covered or not, hence Pitts had a monster rookie year. now we have Mariota who cant throw accurately too save his life and while the oline is better at run blocking now the pas protection is WEAK so they run these designed bootlegs to keep him protected and keep the routes short cause Mariota cant throw deep very well (the Byrd shot was the only deep pass I've ever seen him hit) its not like Arthur saw Pitts last year and was like nah fuck that, he knows that Mariota is an extremely different QB with completely different weaknesses and strengths and is calling plays to try and get the best of who we have. but no, people would rather shit on the Falcons and cry about Fantasy football smh.

    • @crazyworld54321
      @crazyworld54321 Год назад

      @@trippytree3889 What are they protecting him from though? The entire point of having a mobile QB is to let him improvise when the O Line doesn't hold up. But they aren't dropping back and letting him do anything from the pocket. Everything is a designed roll out of some kind. And when that's your offense, I'd say you're becoming far too predictable.
      I get the point that Ryan can read the field and make his decisions quicker than Mariota, but to suggest that Matt Ryan has even an ounce of mobility left at this point in his career is absurd. Matty Ice has been put on ice for the season mainly because he's a damn statue once the ball gets snapped and he simply cannot get away from a pass rush and his body reacts too slowly to climb the pocket.
      Put Pitts and London on the same side of the field, split it in half, and just let Mariota make simple reads to his two best receivers. When those plays are being obviously keyed on pre-snap, then you look for your one on ones on the other side of the field. There are ways to simplify the offense without fully limiting it like they are right now. Acting as if Mariota is a rookie QB is a major detriment. And if that's the case, may as well drop Ridder in behind center.

    I think another part of the issue is that Smith and Ragone clearly don't trust the offensive line to be able to pass block (just look at the Bengals game if you need examples) and so they're asking Pitts to help block so Mariota doesn't get sacked in the first 1.5 seconds. If TF can do a better job at evaluating OL talent than the last regime, this issue should be reduced in the future

On that Seattle long fade, I think it was just before the end of the half, and Mariota probably thought they were going for it as much as they could, while Kyle was thinking business as usual. On the Super Sail (I just call it corner) they hit that SAME route with Zacchaeus, but they 2 WR stopped on a curl, so it was Smash. I think ATL would do better in more no huddle. Also, I think getting CP back will change some of the play calls.

    Adding to the dumpster fire that is Arthur Smith's play calling and the Falcons offense is the fact that the Falcons have been unusually competitive in most of their games. In 3 of their 4 losses this year, the Falcons lost by only one score which keeps the run-heavy offense style a valid option. Adding to that, the Falcons are 1st in their division in a surprisingly weak NFC South. These two validate Smith and how he's been calling the games. Hypothetically, if the Falcons were last in the division and getting blown out every game, they might pivot from their run-heavy scheme and possibly even Mariota for Desmond Ridder but, with the way things are currently going, why fix what the Falcons and Smith don't think is broken?

I mean we saw last year with a declining Matt Ryan how dominant/efficient Kyle Pitts can be (with Smith as HC). ATL just needs more talent, especially at the QB position

    What boggles my mind is that they got Ridder in the Third and didn't throw him into the fire immediately. They chose him in the Third because they liked him. He's also a Third Round pick, so if he completely busted, or is just a backup-caliber type of guy, then at least they know that and they haven't wasted any time figuring shit out. And, simultaneously, Atlanta's setting themselves up nicely to tank for a higher pick in the '23 Draft to go after a guy like Will Anderson, or trade-down and get numerous guys they can start immediately.
    Atlanta's just mind-numbing to me this year because they're not doing anything that makes sense to me.
    >You got Ridder. Fucking play him and develop his chemistry with Pitts and London, so best-case scenario you have your guy at QB and he's already in-sync with two of your three receivers and you're going into the '23 season adding Ridley back into the fold. Or, rather, he bombs and you tank the '22 season like you wanted to anyway.
    >You traded your young ILB away for nothing, even though you're not completely tanking and going for a rebuild due to the fact that you already have enough young pieces on the team to work with, making the '23 season a serious campaign. The OL's one piece away from being really good, you get Ridley back in '23, they could add a RB, their receivers are outstanding on paper, Jarrett, Terrell, Oliver's not a bad second corner, etc. One good offseason, assuming Ridder's their guy, and they're a serious threat in the NFL.

In Tennessee his offense really only worked when Henry was getting 150 yards and they cud throw a post or crosser off play action every few plays and do stuff off that. I always had put that limitation on Tannehill tho cuz I thought last year with Matt Ryan the offense was more diverse but now it seems to have fallen off. I do think Pitts issue is that he is still learning how to run routes in the NFL cuz he was in a system where he just ran the route and the qb just threw a jump ball for him a lot but i think it wud be cool if the used some RPO's and more of the the Chip Kelly stuff with Mariota that cud at least get Pitts the ball in space
