It’s so sad to see the defense hold the Seahawks back. It’s surprising to say that now after their 2013 season. I can honestly say that you might’ve gotten Ken Norton fired.
To be fair, Seattle has lost a ton of coaches, especially on the defensive side of the ball, since 2012. Position coaches get coordinator jobs, and coordinators get HC gigs, like when Bradly was hired by the Jags years ago. Success breed promotions, which means more new faces until that staff is stretched so thin that they have to hire the leftovers.
@@PaulGaither Not really, well recently at least. Since Bradley, Quinn and Norton left for promotions pretty much no one has been hired. Richard sort of but we fired him so I wouldn't count it. No one wanted Bevell or Cable or anyone and no one wants Schottenheimer, Skolari, Norton, etc now. Plus all the coaches that have gotten hired from our tree have been fired since.

I thought 2018's slightly below average unit was going to prove to be the defensive floor under Pete. The past two years have been eye-opening, to say the least.
Here's the thing about Seattle: they had the luxury of athletic, seasoned, and smart players in their secondary for many years. Even if the game plan wasn't working, Pete could rely on the fact that his players like Earl Thomas, Kam Chancellor, Richard Sherman, Byron Maxwell, or even Shaq Griffin could use their physicality to beat receivers on routes. And while I do think they swung for the fences by bringing in guys like Jamal Adams and Quandre Diggs and Quintin Dunbar, they lack the same discipline that the Seahawks used to have 8 years ago. It feels like they know the playbook, but they just aren't following it, and I don't know if it's arrogance, or a lack of trust in their DC Ken Norton. It's probably both. It bothers me that they commit themselves to ensuring that go routes don't wind up giving opposing offenses a homerun ball, when they're playing against QBs that lack the accuracy and placement, or when they're shadowing a receiver that can't necessarily track the ball. The amount of cushion they give to receivers makes their routes easier, and while their starters are injured, Norton doesn't trust the backups (*cough Tre Flowers*) to be able to cover receivers one-on-one in man coverage. Plus, on that Bills play where Brown follows the tunnel screen call, it was Pete Carroll that called the cover-zero blitz - he's just as guilty of running the wrong plays at the absolute worst times. I know it won't happen this season, but they need to look for a defensive coordinator OUTSIDE of Pete Carroll's network. He's got a rapport with the coaching staff, but I feel like it leads to blindspots in their coaching ability and overlooks glaring deficiencies, Pete included. The same problems with getting off the field on third down has been there for at least two seasons now, and with Dunlap and Mayowa on the defensive line, they don't have an excuse for their pass rushing anymore. They need someone who can whip these guys into shape and give them a better structure so that they aren't lazily dropping assignments to allow wide open passes over the midfield.
I find Pete's mentality has changed and he's become arrogant. Things like deciding without competition who's starting now and ignoring all the glaring playcalling issues and stuff like that. The more time that goes by the more it becomes obvious he was carried by amazing players and I think that bothers him and makes him want to prove it's him not them. Thing is if 40 OL fail at their job it's probably the coach, if every RB for 5+ years gets injured that's probably not their individual faults either. I see him refusing to adjust because that would mean accepting he was wrong.
@@BurlASSque That’s the thing about Pete. His arrogance has always been a huge liability. Been running the same predictable defensive scheme for about 7 years now and his stubborn “run first, pass later” mentality has hindered our offense for a long time. Yeah we had freak athletes on both sides of the ball, but that was all 4-5 years ago. There’s no Marshawn Lynch on offense or freak athletes on defense to make up for Pete’s predictable play calling, and he’s currently getting exposed for it. I mean your not wrong, he made a video on my cardinals prior to this season on how they'll majorly improve with wins due to trading for Deandre Hopkins and drafting Isaiah Simmons out of Clemson to help the defense ... only concerns I see so far is suspicious play calling, constant penalties, defense being depleted w/ injuries (ie. losing Chandler Jones, their NT today whose done for the yr, etc), and a kicker that's a hit or miss on his kicks ... inconsistency is what I'm trying to summoned so tomorrow nights game could go either way
When Kollmann scathingly roasted the Packers' defense last season, nothing changed, and they got demolished once again by the 9ers because coordinators like Norton and Pettine are too stubborn to listen to the opinions of other people.
@@wheeler116 welp. The dropped 21 only, but I was rooting for them. I like Kyler and DeAndre but I also like Russell and D.K. So I was fine with either team winning.
Great video Brett, this Seahawks team really reminds me of the 2011 Patriots so much, terrific offense with a hall of fame qb (yes Russ is a hof), and a defense that couldn’t stop my high school team.
Yes, and we still played terrible predictable defense. That was an injured murray who almost tore us apart. The only reason why the game was saved was the fact that he had a miscommunication and threw an unfortunate intentional grounding... It was just torture to watch
Come on dude the Seahawks defense didn’t play amazing but to their standards they didn’t play bad and once again got a crucial stop in the final minutes just like they have a few games so far this season. I’ll take it over everything I saw prior.
Honestly I always ask myself are football coaches just dumb at the end of the day. Like you definitely have those smart coaches and coordinators like mcvay and Kyle Shannahan who always mix it up and gameplan to give their players the best chance to win, but then you have guys like bill O’Brien or Ken Norton that just don’t see what’s wrong on the field.
@@bhavrajpannu8211 The thing that must be realized is that as much as these are some of the best football professionals in the world, football is football, and not preparing properly will always show up on film. You can see who is coached well and who isn’t. Both the falcons and Seahawks defenses have shown this.
@@bhavrajpannu8211 Also sometimes good coaches burn out and fail to adapt. It’s incredibly easy for this to happen because some coaches think that trends that worked in the past can work just as well now, when this isn’t always the case.
Thats because most network analysts aren't actually analysts, they're hot take machines in order to generate views and click. But I hard disagree with you saying most coordinators are idiots- that is a super ignorant and arrogant statement. As with most things, it's infinitely easier to criticize a performance than to actually perform
The NFL is full of nepotism. Look at Seattle's OC, his dad was a head coach so he's got NFL coaching jobs despite his repeated failures. Owners would rather hire someone who's been around the NFL then an unknown just from an evil you know mentality. As for analysts, most networks have analysts that are far too generic covering all sports which ends up with them watching highlights only or a couple games a week.
To everybody that wants Seahawks to do well: go send this video to every insta live, RUclips vid or players dms to get their attention...Go and spread the word🙌🗣
Brett, you are most certainly NOT "some random dude on the internet." You are one of the most knowledgeable analysts anywhere. Why some team hasn't snatched you up and offered you 6 figures a year to do their film work is a mystery to me.
Exactly, Brett seems like he generally loves the game of football and who wouldn’t want to pay someone to work for you that loves the specific job you’re hiring them for? Brett is also a good analyst imo.
Not really. Aaron Rodgers mostly had terrible defenses in his career and he has the by far best TD:INT ration in history. Drew Brees also had many extremely bad defenses but still managed to carry them. Meanwhile Russ has 7 turnovers in the last two games and these are not on the defense.
@@hasamikun None of those defenses were as horrendous as this Seahawk defense. Russ literally has to score a touchdown on every single drive or else the team loses, which leads to hero ball and interceptions. This defense isn’t just bad, it’s beyond historical. When you have average quarterbacks putting up beyond elite numbers every game, you have no chance to succeed
@@TheOneMusketeer Fun fact: Right now, the worst defense all time, from a yards allowed pov, are the 2011 Packers. Thats the year were Aaron Rodgers played one of the best season of a QB ever. Blaming the mass of turnovers by Wilson on the defense is lazy. Best example is the one INT vs the Rams where the Seahawks were set up by a turnover of their defense. Literally the whole field is wide open and Russ can probably run it for 15-20 yards. Yet he forced the ball and gets intercepted. These are mistakes that cant happen to someone who people hype up for the MVP award. Right now he isnt even close to being the MVP because he cant consistently carry his team. Rodgers and Mahomes are the clear favourites for the award and after that is a big hole.
@@Sentient_Blob Yeah you Hawks fans need to get your heads out of the sand and stop defending Russ from any form of criticism. The man has been making some dumbass mistakes this year. His defense did not force him to throw that interception in the 4th of the Vikings game. His defense did not force him to throw a pick in OT against the Cardinals. And his defense sure as hell did not force him to throw a redzone INT against the Rams instead of picking up the first down. He wants to win MVP so bad he's forcing throws to make spectacular MVP level plays.
Loved the part about the zero blitzes. I'm always amazed as a casual viewer that professionals miss things I can pick up. Keep the videos coming Brett!
As a Jets fan the only good thing about the season is getting drafting becton and getting Trevor with the first pick and trading A box safety for two first round picks #Luv
Combination of injuries and scheme. I'm no fan of Gregg Williams, but that man knows how to run a defense. Ken Norton doesn't. Not in Oakland, not in Seattle, not in the NFL.
We really picked it up tonight against AZ. This video is really good at breaking down why we lost the last couple games, so it’s dope to see us play as one and have way better play calling tonight
Biggest differences since the Kollman curse: Karlos Dunlap trade, Jamal Adams hitting his stride, DJ Reed looking like a #1 corner and general return of health to secondary Like Kollman said communication was a problem and everyone seems on the same page now. KJ Wright has had a masterclass season even when they were bad and now even better with help.

Ya, a lot of people are going overboard saying our defense is fixed. There was promising stuff, but every receiver was wide open with a few exceptions. If Murray was more experienced and just stood in the pocket reading the defense I don't think it would have gone well for us. A couple great individual efforts though. It concerns me how horrible our offensive playcalling still is though.

Hell, its crazy to think just how good this team would be if they had an "average" defense...
5:00 I would have to disagree a bit. Jamal saw the d line jump and opened up to the 1v1 side because 9/10 the QB is trying to throw a 50/50 ball to the single side receiver. I could see WHY he did it. Football instincts at that point IMO. Could be wrong. @BrettKollmann

Jamal Adams is the most overrated safety in the league. I know people like him because he’s a good pass rusher for a DB but that doesn’t really make a difference if you give up 20 yards next play.
You should make videos of historic offenses and defenses. Like the greatest show on turf, 85 bears D, ect. Or vids about systems that revolutionized the game like the west coast offense and so on.
The most maddening part of that zero blitz is that they knew Quinton Dunbar was playing very hurt; it was obvious that he wasn't moving right, and he has been on the injury report with an ankle basically all season. Even pre-snap, Dunbar is lining up 12 yards off his man to keep from getting burnt deep, and Norton somehow still finds it in him to isolate his CB with a bad ankle against John Brown, one of the fastest receivers in football, and do it repeatedly. It's not just that Seattle's scheme is bad; it's downright negligent.
This showed up in my recommended as a hawks fan and i came here with the intent of arguing with the title but after this deep dive analysis I'm impressed and it all makes sense now.
Well this aged as well as milk. I agree that adjustments are killing us though hopefully this recent Arizona game is the start of the defense trending upwards

Our defense didnt play that well that game. Our pass rush was bonkers but again Jamal gave up and easy td to chase edmonds. we have to sharpen up.

Kollmann curse + Thursday Night Football + Traditional Seattle weirdness = A guaranteed crapton of shenanigans
@@wheeler116 welp. The dropped 21 only, but I was rooting for them. I like Kyler and DeAndre but I also like Russell and D.K. So I was fine with either team winning.
if i told you 6 years ago that in 6 years the seahawks would have a historically bad defense, I would have been laghed at
Brett: “bring the boom”
Norton: “oh, okay call zero again”
Great video Brett, this Seahawks team really reminds me of the 2011 Patriots so much, terrific offense with a hall of fame qb (yes Russ is a hof), and a defense that couldn’t stop my high school team.
Imagine if the bears defense had Seattle’s offense
You mean if they had Russell Wilson lol
@@kalvinuhde4978 and Dk metcalf
Just transplant the Hawks oline and Russ and they would be unstoppable

Who is watching this after the Cardinals game?
Yes, and we still played terrible predictable defense. That was an injured murray who almost tore us apart. The only reason why the game was saved was the fact that he had a miscommunication and threw an unfortunate intentional grounding... It was just torture to watch
@@kkopo123 Murray tears everyone apart he is an mvp candidate for a reason
@@keonhobgood1551 I agree that he has been playing well , but his throwing shoulder was injured... That should slow down even the best of the best
@@kkopo123 TBH Seattle's defense was miles better compared to when they played in AZ.
Come on dude the Seahawks defense didn’t play amazing but to their standards they didn’t play bad and once again got a crucial stop in the final minutes just like they have a few games so far this season. I’ll take it over everything I saw prior.
What I’ve learned through RUclips is that professional sports “analysts” and many coordinators in the football are just dumb
Not until after tomorrow's game please.
On it
Stop drinking the Gatorade.
There has to be more to it.
These are professionals.
3 words can sum this video up: KEN NORTON JUNIOR
Brett, you are most certainly NOT "some random dude on the internet."
You are one of the most knowledgeable analysts anywhere. Why some team hasn't snatched you up and offered you 6 figures a year to do their film work is a mystery to me.
fax
That's sarcasm right?
@@brandonb9806 why though?
Exactly, Brett seems like he generally loves the game of football and who wouldn’t want to pay someone to work for you that loves the specific job you’re hiring them for? Brett is also a good analyst imo.
@@Lorfrian I just assumed anyone suggesting Brett is one of the smartest football minds was kidding. Seems absurd to me.
They only allowed 127 points in the 2nd half of the season, so at least they rebounded like a boomerang right after this video was made
I love watching Brett so much. He helps me understand the game so much better and my appreciation for it grows more every week
Lol this hasn’t aged well!!! Defense turned it around and we legit now boys
Dude should be a coach. I’m a huge football fan. I’m learning a ton ! Thanks for the excellent content bro!
This video can also be titled "Yet Another Case For Russell Wilson's MVP Vote."
@@hasamikun we are talking about THE WORST DEFENSE in history by a mile. Not just a bad defense, THE WORST
Thanks for the Brett curse, hawks seem to be getting things figured out now
Unlike many other film RUclipsrs, I like how Brett offers his own commentary on the team that he is focusing on, not just the film
This aged perfectly
You should do a video of davante adams route running and his “hop”. it’s so unique and i’d love to see it from the perspective of a genius
As a Jets fan the only good thing about the season is getting drafting becton and getting Trevor with the first pick and trading A box safety for two first round picks #Luv

@@noammosek1319 And Adams has been horrible covering this season
Combination of injuries and scheme. I'm no fan of Gregg Williams, but that man knows how to run a defense. Ken Norton doesn't. Not in Oakland, not in Seattle, not in the NFL.
I’d still rather have Jamal, good luck rebuilding again lmao
We really picked it up tonight against AZ. This video is really good at breaking down why we lost the last couple games, so it’s dope to see us play as one and have way better play calling tonight
We're about to get another Vikings defense video from Brett to cleanse his palette.
Biggest differences since the Kollman curse:
Karlos Dunlap trade,
Jamal Adams hitting his stride,
DJ Reed looking like a #1 corner and general return of health to secondary
Like Kollman said communication was a problem and everyone seems on the same page now.

10 months later and nothing has changed... I think we actually got worse if that's even possible

To a back up qb and a Qb with a broken thumb on throwing hand
Accurate. Is that the defense’s fault, which this video is all about? Or is it their completely inept offense?
Can you do an update about what they are doing right now as they have become a legit defense?
5:00 I would have to disagree a bit. Jamal saw the d line jump and opened up to the 1v1 side because 9/10 the QB is trying to throw a 50/50 ball to the single side receiver. I could see WHY he did it. Football instincts at that point IMO. Could be wrong. @BrettKollmann

One game lol calm down
The most maddening part of that zero blitz is that they knew Quinton Dunbar was playing very hurt; it was obvious that he wasn't moving right, and he has been on the injury report with an ankle basically all season.
Dunbar should not have been playing, period.
