Damn I was really wondering how Doug Demuro pissed off Uhaul
same
He pointed out the quirks and feature of their trucks, van's, trailers etc.
haha same brother!
Funny, It must have been my brain playing tricks. I swear the title of the video said Doug Demuro. lol
Has Doug Demuro ever been on vinwiki?
Not the Doug I was expecting but ok I'll take it.
Thankfully not DeMuro.

Same here
Doug who?

Ed “let me google random pictures of vehicles attached to U-Haul trailers and show them every 45 seconds in my video” Bolian! 😂
It wouldnt be vinwiki without some pictures every 45 seconds 😂
Stupid annoying lol. It’s like no one knows what a uhaul trailer looks like
Max Starikov well by this point everyone knows what Doug looks like too, so there's that
Give the man some credit.
He is adding some visual candy to add an extra dimension to the story?🤷
Stuart D I seriously doubt Doug or any of the other talking heads edits their own video.

Doug Demuro would get banned from U-Haul by trying to tow a trailer with his GT over the Atlantic to get to Nantucket
To watch Gilmore Girls
This is so insane I bet it’ll come true
he could just get a vehicle from CNC motors and claim its to "test the towing capacity" nd they would hand him the keys, no questioms ask
With a bumper to trailer warranty

Man you really went all out with the random U-Haul pictures lol 👍

Doug and I have been up to some other RUclips-related shenanigans lately. We built the craziest Hot Wheels track we could and decided to have a Ferrari vs Lambo model car shootout on it. It will release on my personal channel today at noon.

hei Ed, have yoy ever chech 3DBotmaker ? he is awesome channel for Hotwheels enthusiast, :)

If you need a backup camera you don't have the skill to drive it.
It may not be the Doug we hoped for but it's the Doug we deserve
The Doug you deserve maybe. What have you done to piss off the car gods?
So I guess you could say the square attachment is one of U-Haul’s quirks and features.
P.S. I know it's a different Doug now... :(
I am just suspecting the ball was the wrong size to start with
There is nothing 'quirky' about a hitch with a screw to pull up the lock on the ball. The majority of all commercial strength ball hitches work like this. When he claims that the crappy lightweight lever locks are 'normal' he shows his ignorance.
Yea, well Uhaul has been using the exact same hitch for over 60 years that I know of.
If it was a bad design I think they would have changed it by now.
Oh, but this is different Doug😂
@@anance3220 You know, that's something that I didn't think about until just now. Uhauls do not use electric brakes.
None of the enclosed trailers have brakes except the largest, the 6x12. Then they are equipped with hydraulic surge brakes.
It's kind if hard to rent trailers with electric brakes when very, very few vehicles on the road are equipped with electric brake controllers.
The secret of the uhaul hitch is to tighten, pull forward and re tighten once the ball is all the way forward in the cup.
And make sure you have the right size ball on your tow vehicle. Most U-Haul trailers require a 2 5/16 ball. I used to have a U-Haul rental sideline, and would always check when the customer showed up.....but some dealers may not.
Pipe wrench
If you show up with a 2 5/16 ball you'll be pissed. Their trailers are designed to fit a 1 7/8 or 2" ball... All of them...
Exactly. Once you get it tight. Lift the tongue against the ball and tighten it again. I had a large uhaul trailer recently that the lady there struggled to tighten. I tightened it after her and sprayed some pb blaster on the mechanism, which loosened it up greatly. They were already reluctant to let me tow their largest trailer with a 96 Maxima.
Why is this a secret

I worked for U-haul back in the day. One of my "Adventures in Moving" involved an interstore transfer of trucks. I worked at the Fairfield Ca store, close to Travis AFB. We did a ton of one-way sales during the summer and often times need to gather(raid) other stores trucks. So me ,my buddy and boss along with every friend we could contact with a CDL jumped into a van for a trip to Sacramento to get 10 trucks. While there the boss says, nobodys leaving without a trailer. So I hook up a 6x12 trailer to the back of my 24' truck. Seems legit so far. So about 10 at night I'm cruising down I-80 between Vacaville and Fairfield, home stretch, I notice that despite struggling to go 55MPH ,nobody is passing me. Freeway is 4 lanes wide at this area. I noticed a bit of surging going up this incline too. I check the rearview and see the trailer in the right mirror, lots of it. Then I see the trailer in the left mirror too.. OOHHH No!!!
I got pulled over safely and inspected the trailer mounting. Turns out the ball had broken the weld to the tongue. I did what any clever 18 year old would do. Dropped the shank back through the hole and high tailed it back to the shop. I was midpack in my arrival and helped park all the trucks and trailers. Around midnight I figured my buddy had gone home with his truck so I jumped on my bad motor scooter and headed home. Next day I found out his truck drove 2 miles before overheating and blowing up. His truck had no radiator hoses.
Just another day in the life

I rented a U Haul trk. Loaded all my stuff from a storage unit to take to another storage unit in another state.
I turn the truck in. They check the mileage. Has 10 user miles. They then start looking at the dash and under the truck for tampering of the odometer.
They asked me, did you tamper with this. No. Why do it only have 10 miles, when from location you rented from to here is almost 400.
My reply is you don't wanna know..
What I failed to tell them was I loaded it on my lowboy trl and hauled it down. Lol
Sounds like something I would do!
Lol why?
Why not is the real question here.
@@igorluiz9551 huge savings.
That's a good one. I had a truck years ago where the speedo was wired into the tach. I'm at idle and I'm racking up miles. 16 mile rental with 110 miles on the odometer. They didn't want to believe it even when I showed them. Another truck, with duraspark (Ford Electronic module) ignition, died continuously while driving. They sent out 2 techs and wouldn't replace it because it always worked when they were there running the truck. I documented it numerous times. I get back in the truck, turn left to get on a freeway, and the engine dies. I have a wiped out left arm and can't steer without power steering, which has stopped as the engine dies. Up, over a curb, into a light pole. Effed up the front of the truck. Uhaul bitched and moaned like hell, but I called the state patrol and showed them my documents of the issue and this whole thing just went away! It's a lot better now, but 20 years ago it was a pretty wild operation.
Sound like a 2" hand on a 1 7/8" ball

I'm glad you brought up the U-haul issue with the trailer attachments. I rented a car carrier from U-haul years ago. The trailer attachment to the hitch/ball was exactly the same as you have explained in this video. The U-haul employee attached the trailer to the truck. When I attempted to drive my car onto the trailer at home, the trailer detached from the ball and hit the truck/SUV (Lincoln Navigator when they were still acceptable) in the gate. Horrible experience!!! I have never rented anything else from U-haul after that incident. Since then I have used Penske and never had any problems like that ever again, even though I moved my cars all over US.

Sounds like operator error, Never had an issue with all the trailers i've rented. Also it is done so it can fit both 1-7/8" AND 2" balls....
They also fit the bigger ball 2 and 5/8ths or something maybe 3/8
@@jordanlittle5391 2 5/16.
No they don't. 1 7/8- 2 inch. And 1 7/8 isn't the ideal.
"safety chains came unhooked" yeah alright buddy, I'm sure they did
$10 says he didn't use the safety chain. Absolutely no reason that they would "come off" on their own. I've rented plenty from UHaul and never had any issues.
For a second I was imagining that Tabbutt had used a U-Haul truck for a cannonball attempt.
This would be a next level of cannonballs
3 50 gallon fuel cells in the back . That would be amazing
Uhauls are only rated for 55 mph.
For those that absolutly have to unhook these trailers.....when you go to put it back down reach under the wheel part and push up on the knob. Then tighten it as much as you can. After that push back on the trailer a few times then tighten it more. There's a reason why they only want the employees doing it.
Doug - "I'm probably not banned, I don't know, but probably not, but I don't know"
Vinwiki - "lol banned"
If you had the wrong size ball that would be your issue
FishFind3000 I was thinking the same. . .
Uhaul cupplers fits 2in or 1 7/8th. Thats why its designed with a hand wheel coupler.

Yeah... when you're in a sports car. Not towing a load!
The first time I ever towed a trailer it popped off of the ball on the freeway. The safety chains did their job. Towing expensive boats was a big part of my job so I NEVER towed again without a locking pin.

The ad at the end really got my attention 😂
As someone who rents U-Hauls at my job (we are local dealer, not big center) I have had many excursions with that coupler. I do think design is horrible and have cut my thumb several times tightening/untightening. I feel your pain, surprised it came off, I believe Doug was right saying something was wrong, I think I have seen one trailer that was fully tightened that came off someone's truck (same situation, driveway has a bump, when they hit it, came off, chains kept it from slamming ground.
Update; you're not banned from renting a uhaul. I work for uhaul and your name isn't populating in the "bad boy" system.
I love that they actually have a "bad boy" no fly list 🤣🤣
E alert. I too work for uhaul. 😂😂
"When you put the tongue into the ball, you have to screw this square thing"
The part about getting graph paper and doing a scale model of the trailer made me laugh. Just moved cross country and did the exact same thing. 1600sq foot apartment into a 6’x12’
Feel under the hitch and push up on the pin to take out the spring tension then tighten down. Used to work for uhaul it really simple when you figure it out.
I just rented a u-haul trailer from some yard work over the weekend. Would love to know who came up with the idea of a square knob for locking the trailer to the hitch.
Edward J. Votruba, he is credited on the patent for uhaul Coupler assembly with guided ball clamp. Closest I could find anyway.
Just get the off brand, You-hall. Duh
I have a towbar that apparently was once U-haul in a past life. Clamps to a conventional metal bumper, and chains to the frame under. Same knob deal for the receiver. I always reached under and pushed up the tongue or whatever you call it, then spun the knob down. It's spring loaded inside. Never had an issue with it popping off until.. One time I forgot to crank it down. Got about 100 yards and it popped off. It bent the stud a bit. I still use it after that but it doesn't screw down as tight. But it doesn't come off when screwed down, so good enough.
They also used an odd size ball, like 2 1/8 instead of 2 inch. Easier to find those now, I used to use it with the 2 inch.
Well built unit though, it's been used to move 6000 lb vehicles without an issue, it's been used on vehicles without even a front bumper, it's been used 150 miles at a shot. And it came missing the top chains so it was used wrong for a long time.
The last time I used it the car had no engine so after about three turns where the car's wheels turned opposite me and I had to stop, go back and turn them manually I just wired the car's steering wheel straight and let it drag a little on turns. That got me the 50 miles I needed to go.
I did find out it's not supposed to even exist, U-haul does not sell off their old equipment. Given it's been in my possession for 25 years I'm thinking any statute of limitations has passed. There's like three coats of paint on it so who knows when it was "lost".
When I see a video posted on this channel I pray it’s Doug before watching 😂 best story teller
2 best story tellers go to Rabbit or Doug
The moral of the story is "No good deed goes un-punished."
I watch for the ad at the end of the video.
The intro reminded of the interview about the shipwreck where the guy says "the front fell off"
The screw down attachment allows the U-Haul trailer to work with 1 7/8” or 2” balls. Flexibility.

@@lukelaputka7164 Well, he asks for people in Southern California to share their cars with him in every video.
With any hitch you must make sure that you are using the proper size ball for the trailer, they are both marked.
Any time you are hooking up a trailer you have to look underneath the hitch and make sure you are tightening the clamp under the ball instead of the ball having the clamp on top of it.
In this instance either the ball was too small or the clamp was on top of the ball and not holding anything.
I can really relate to Doug's shirt, as I've been taking a shit in the course of more than 4 vinwiki stories 🤣

Ed’s google search bar while editing this video: “interesting photos of UHAUL trailers”
I rented a u-haul box truck and also needed it to tow my 6x12 trailer. The hitch ball was 1 size smaller than required for my trailer but they said it would be fine. It worked great when both the truck and trailer were fully loaded but a few blocks after unloading I hit a large bump and my trailer came off in the middle of an intersection in downtown Vancouver. Luckily I had a ratchet strap with me and strapped it together and drove slowly all the way back to u-hail to drop it off.
This video was perfect timing as I'm about to take a uhaul trailer from south Florida to western wi in a couple days

I never had a problem with the trailers that I remember (though I remember the clerk holding up a funny pen-like device at check-in haha), but do remember thinking the square handle coupler seemed off. We used different sized trailers and car haulers, the last of which was across most of Canada. I did have a quite new full size truck burn up on me on a short move, mere blocks from my destination. It was only the cab, though some clothing in the attic got scorched / melted plastic bag on it and the fire dept did a good job of trying to soak all of my stuff in the back despite there being no fire there.
There's no better feeling then hitting a bump while pulling a empty car dolly to see the whole trailer in your rear view mirror.
It didn't come off but was a great laugh 😆
Pretty sure everyone was expecting Doug Demuro 🤣
Dang this’ll be the last time you upload before I leave for basic tomorrow.

What a shitty way to go...
i worked for uhaul for two years as my first job. i've connected hundreds of trailers and not one of them have come off.
Just as a testament to how STRONG normal trailer ball hitch attachments are. My brother and I (and a few friends) were driving back from a VW car show once. One of the friends was driving the truck with the (open, steel) car trailer attached to the back as that was the "emergency" vehicle in case any of us broke down in our finicky old VWs on the 6+ hour drive home. Anyway, at some point (likely due to all of us driving the cars doing a bunch of shenanigans), we had gotten separated from the truck. Now, there are two ways to go home from where we were, and while those two paths stay separated for 95% of the journey home, they both meet about 10 miles before we get there, on the same road, to take the same exit to the house. SOMEHOW, and we're still not exactly sure how this happened... despite the truck taking path A and us (in the cars) taking path B, we both ended up LITERALLY right behind each other when the two paths met back up. No, we did not plan this. At that EXACT moment where we had pulled in behind each other to follow each other home, the trailer dropped off of the back of the truck. Showers of sparks shot up from under the truck as the trailer jack scraped along the cement at 70 MPH. Seconds later the tires of the trailer started smoking as well as they had locked up from the trailer e-brake being activated. LUCKILY, the chains on that trailer were beefy as hell, and stayed connected. We were SUPER lucky that none of the cars were on the trailer at that point or else it would have been a hell of a lot harder to control with a few thousand pounds on top of those locked up wheels (all 4 of them.) Anyway, on to the entire point of this story. We eventually all got pulled over. We had expected that the ball had perhaps fallen off of the drop bar or maybe broken, or that the hitch attachment had broken. But no, we were ALL wrong. The freaking huge ass 5/8 inch stainless hitch pin had sheared in half. No, the hitch pin clip didn't break, the literal hitch pin itself had sheared in half. Half of it was still stuck in the receiver itself (hence why we knew it failed.) Anyway, the testament to how strong the normal hitch attachment points are is here. The trailer was STILL ATTACHED to the ball mount, and was dragging it along the ground. The ball mount itself had been ground down at an angle from being dragged for as long as it was. Despite weathering multiple huge bumps, shocks, rocks, everything, the ball was STILL perfectly attached to the trailer, and it wasn't even broken in the slightest. The mechanism still worked with ease when we went to remove the ball and ball mount from the trailer. The moral of the story is, those ball mounts may SEEM rickety and loose, but they work good as hell and there is no way you're going to break one or lose a trailer if it's properly attached to one. While we didn't exactly have a spare hitch pin to complete the journey back home, there were a few huge bolts in the truck toolbox that worked perfectly well for the few miles we had left before we got home. We locked the nuts down on that thing as hard as we could, then locked two nuts together by backing one off onto the other. We stopped a couple of times on the way home to make sure it was good (it was.) When we got home we had to cut the bolt off with a grinder because of how destroyed the threads were. So I suppose moral number 2 is "Make sure all of the safety stuff is properly attached when towing a trailer, and make sure the brake pin/line is properly adjusted so that it locks the brakes even IF the trailer is still attached by chains." We all had a good drink when we got home and were extremely thankful that nothing more eventful happened that night. In the end, nothing was really broken (other than the ball hitch and hitch pin of course) and nobody was hurt so... win win.
The only Doug that matters on RUclips.
Anyone who’s ever rented from U-haul knows that the square tightener thingy is NOT your friend! The first time I ever rented a U-Haul trailer, they insisted on hooking it up for me and they used a giant pipe wrench to tighten down the square thingy. One of the guys said , "you’ll thank me later for this" as they walked back into the office laughing. But he wasn’t kidding. When I removed the trailer and put it back on again, that’s when I discovered I could not keep that nut tight. Until I borrowed a pipe wrench and really cranked down on it, it kept coming loose. But thinking about all of my horrible U-Haul experiences, I can confirm everything that you are saying as being 100% true without exaggeration.
"Yellow means accelerate" 😂😂
Yes, it does.
This happened to me with the funky hitch device when I bought a car and towed it back about four years ago. When we drove it on the trailer it popped off. After I drove 110 miles of highway without a “hitch”. Left a nice scratch in my tailgate. 🤦♂️ Glad to know that I’m not the only one.
Being asked to help people move is the reason I will never own a truck.
It's the reason i put my spare wheel on a carrier in the bed of my truck. 'No sorry I cant help you move anymore. My truck is now a wanna-be prerunner with no bed'
This video brought to you by Jimmy Johns.
best line ever "Yellow light means accelerate"
U-haul's standard ball used to be 2 1/8 inch. Now it is 2 inch but the trailers still will accept both sizes. I got my U-haul ball in 1980 - 2 1/8 so it fits nice and snug with modern hitches. But it'll bet it would be real sloppy on a 2 inch. I think that the screw down is used to try to make it adjustable enough to retain ( sort of ) the undersized balls that U-haul is now selling.
