    I am currently going through a similar situation. I confirmed a 15' box truck and ended up having to drive over 600km (round trip) in order to get a 26' truck due to limited availability. Normally I have zero issues with U-Haul and every other time was perfect.
    A summer full of medical issues, life with 2 small kids, and tight deadlines forced me to go through with the costly move. Thankfully they are not charging me extra for the larger truck, or to pick it up a day earlier, however I will have to pay more in gas. This maybe my last time with U-Haul.

    We're having a nightmare also. Got the 6 by 12 trailer in West Texas. Day 1: I got to Salt Lake City and one tire blew out in the middle of I-15. 2 hours later, repair guy comes and replaces it. On the road again and when filling up in idaho, checked pressure and it was half of recommend. Filled it up and stopped in Dillon Montana for the night. Day 2: decided to stop at the travel center in Butte Montana to make sure all tires were up to pressure. Filled up the driver side front, then went to the back one. Filled out up and then the front blew a hole and is completely flat. Still have further to go.

    I'm a used car dealer. When I started 7 years ago, I had 400 bucks to my name and a few hand tools. Being flat broke, any car I got, I had to tow because it wasn't moving on its own power. Every Thursday, Friday, and Saturday the UHaul Auto Transports would be harder to find than a 5 legged unicorn, other dealers were snapping them up to move their inventory. I got to be pretty good friends with the guy I rented from the most, and he would reserve a trailer for me, and if I didn't need it, I'd promptly call him and he'd rent it out to the next guy. His wife developed cancer, he closed up shop to look after her. So the day of the auction, I'm looking to reserve a trailer. There was another UHaul shop, local, just down the street. I go to reserve the trailer, but the guy says I can't unless I'm certain I'm going to use it. He won't allow me to cancel if I come back from the auction empty handed. I ended up with 1 car from the auction, and I immediately called to rent the trailer... it's unavailable. So I'll take whatever is closest, and the closest trailer was 70 miles west of me. I went ahead and drove 70 miles to get that trailer. I get there early, that shop wasn't open yet. While I'm sitting there waiting for them to open, I'm looking on my phone to look up the business to see hours of operation, when I see the reviews. Complaint after complaint after complaint that they were charging people for damage to UHaul equipment that was pre-existing, or in some cases, non-existent. One of the comments suggested that one should take photographs of the equipment with GPS tags on, and then texting the pictures to one's self to document the condition. I had to wait until they opened because I didn't know which trailer would be assigned to me. Once I was assigned a trailer and the associate was hooking it up, I started photographing the trailer, which drew the ire of the associate who demanded that I stop. I wasn't snapping pics inside the business, or encroaching on the associate's personal space in anyway. We were out in the parking lot, and I stood at a distance where I could optimally photograph the trailer. I did get to snap the rest of my pictures when he left to get parts. He was hooking up the trailer and was ready to send me on my way and never noticed that one of the lights didn't work, and that one of the tires has no tread. When I pointed it out, he demanded to know how I knew that one of the lights didn't work. I pointed out the torn wiring that was dangling underneath. At least he didn't question me about the tire, but of course it would of been hard to argue when the steel belt was fully exposed. Didn't look like the tire was worn out. I'd say that the tread just fell off the tire. It looked like an orange after having the peel removed. It was still round and holding air, but I wasn't about to ride on that. At that time I had almost 100 UHaul rentals, but that would be my last rental. I bought my own trailer after that. I liked that I didn't have to worry about trailer theft (quite the problem in my area), not having to worry about having a secure place to park it, but after that experience, I figured that seeing to my own trailer would outweigh having to deal with this again. In the end, it worked out. The UHaul auto transport is only limited to a wheelbase of about 135 inches, so the biggest I could tow would be like a full size SUV or a regular cab pickup. Extended cab with a long bed was a no-go. My personal trailer doesn't limit me to such anymore.

    I’ve had one good and one bad U-Haul experience. They are shady, I swear they cheated on the mileage, claiming the odometer read “Y”, when it really said “X”, I showed them this and then they claimed that it the extra charges waived only applied when the odometer read “X” on certain “blackout dates”. That was my bad experience.
    My “good experience” was a polite/friendly agent, fair/honest billing, and a truck that actually didn’t smell like urine. Sadly that place went under new management and the second time became my previously mentioned “bad experience”. Perhaps it was just that particular location’s new management that was lousy?

    I am a U-Haul dealer and want to clarify. (1) when you made the reservation it clearly states on the reservation the they CANNOT guarantee your PU location. Why? Because customers do not return equipment on time and at the correct location. (2) when you see a dealer with lets say 20 trucks and trailers, only 20% of equipment is ONE WAYS, 80% our IN TOWN rentals and must be returned to the original location. (3) It could very well be the case

    So there are two sides to every story. I can tell you first, just because you ask for a supervisor doesn’t mean the company has to transfer you to one. This is a common misconception. Two, when you setup the reservation they also told you at the time that they would have to call you to schedule and confirm where you will have to pickup from. This means that their locations all around the area are fully booked up but they are gonna do everything they can to get you with equipment on the day you needed it. Three, why would you call back over and over again if you know you are gonna get the same info. Just cancel and find another company. There are a few in that area and I looked. Please remember that there are two side to every story. Oh and they didn’t hang up on you. I can guarantee that you are one of those people who act like they are hot s&$? And talk down to people. That would have been the only reason they would have canceled you and then hung up. U-Haul will try all they can to help but if you are a rude or mean customer or talk down to a rep or sup they will cancel your reservation and hang up. You wasted so much time trying to make U-Haul do what they told you they just could not do, when you could have called budget or another place. Another thing, they would have told you at time of booking that 30 days out is very far from reservation day in the moving world and it’s hard to make sure that this equipment will be there because of all the other orders between then and now, which again I know they told you. I really hate how people don’t listen to all the information that is given to them and just push for reservation to be done quickly. You know you were told all this, plus it’s in the contract which I encourage everyone to always check everything you are signing or any info sent to you and read thru it. I’m sorry you went thru all this but you wasted so much time trying to change something that will not change and instead find another solution. If it can’t be done just because you puff out your chest and say you need to fix this that it will be fixed. Customer service people are doing everything they can to help you. Everyone please remember that before reacting to a customer service personnel like myself. Not saying I work for U-Haul but I definitely know their system and this story has a lot of holes in it from my point of view. Like I said….two sides to EVERY story. Have a good day everyone!

    • @JimORearsWackyWorld
      @JimORearsWackyWorld  8 месяцев назад +1

      Nothing you’ve written changes the fact that UHaul made a promise they couldn’t fulfill. Their only job is to rent equipment and if you can’t provide that equipment that was reserved well over a month in advance, then you’re in the wrong business. Also, you can’t guarantee they didn’t hang up. You were not on the call. This was a complete failure by a company who had one responsibility… provide a truck at a particular location that was reserved well in advance. Rental car companies do it all day long with absolutely no issue. This should not have been an issue either, since UHaul is in the same vehicle rental business.

      Ummm, no. This happened to me yesterday. Pretty much was told my truck wasn't available, but I could get a smaller truck for more than my reservation was for. I asked how I was going to get all my stuff moved, and he interrupted me to say that that's what I signed up for. There was nothing else they could do for me, and then asked....well, you want this truck or not?
      That's NOT a reservation because nothing was actually reserved. And it's sure not customer service.

    People have one bad experience and say “don’t blah blah blah with this company”. Listen, it was one bad experience you had that is atypical of UHaul. They couldn’t be a billion dollar company if they were consistently bad….
    You could always install the hitch yourself and go buy a trailer for $18,000 and do it yourself. Oh wait, you can’t? Uhaul was able to make moving affordable. Crazy.
    Uhaul isn’t my favorite company by any means, but I’ve never had an issue. I just understand that people don’t return stuff when and where they’re suppose to and not everything is allotted to being a One Way.

      Most companies understand that 1 bad experience can lose their customer for life. That's the reality that UHaul, and obviously you, don't understand. Plenty of other comments here That are the same. So, yes... one bad experience matters.

      Exactly. People who complain like this clearly never owned or had their own business or created anything to be of service for other people. Nothing is 100% perfect.

      Not blacklisted at all. But I have blacklisted them, as well as many others have. 😁 If you can’t provide the service you advertise, it’s time for you to close up shop. And it’s “seems,” Genius, not “seams.” We’re not sewing here.

    I remember the first time I rented from U-Haul in the late 80's. I needed to rent a truck. They told me the amount and said it's $200 deposit and we refund the amount when you return the truck if no damage, unusually dirty, and gas is replaced. I said ok. I started to give the associate 200 cash and she said we don't take cash for deposits only cards???? I told her I don't use cards if I have the cash. She said, I'm sorry sir but that's our policy. They want your card number so if there's any damage, they can charge your card and you are stuck at least temporarily. All you have to do is call your card company and tell them you didn't authorize the charge and by law they won't get the money. Of course even if they don't get their money they still have a record of where you live and your name. Anyway I went to one of their competitors gave a cash deposit with no problem. U-Haul, it's not just a job it's an adventure. I also heard these days by the time they charge you all the fees which they have to show upfront on the rental agreement a 19.95 a day charge if going 50-250 miles will cost somewhere close to 300 dollars.
