Feral Hogs Are Tearing Up Texas, So Tourists Are Shooting Them from Helicopters

  • “Legit question for rural Americans,” Twitter user William McNabb asked in August in response to a question about assault weapon use, “How do I kill the 30-50 feral hogs that run into my yard within 3-5 mins while my small kids play?”
The internet shortly exploded with feral hogs and the oddly specific invasion of 30 to 50 hogs became a viral internet meme. What started as a debate around one of America’s most polarizing topics - assault weapons - became many people’s introduction to a very different problem: Feral hogs are one of the most destructive invasive species in the U.S.
And Texans, in particular, come face-to-face with a lot more than 30 to 50 feral hogs, but it's no laughing matter. That's why they're dealing with the crisis in a very Texas way, Helicopter Hunting.

I had a neighbor named Billy who spent his whole career hunting feral hogs. The State of Florida paid him to hunt them at night on state park lands. He was a USMC sniper in Vietnam, so I suppose you could say he was well qualified for the job. He had one bad encounter, & a plaque with giant teeth on his wall. Usually, the hogs run when the 1st goes down. But one time, instead of running away, a giant boar ran straight to him. Billy carried 2 pistols for up close, & that time he had to use them after the boar got to him. He had giant scars on his shin where the boar attacked him. Imagine getting paid to do what many call having a good time. Billy passed in 2020.

I delivered bundles of newspapers to various carriers outside of Abilene Texas. On my return trip back , about four in the morning on a road with no lighting an 18 wheeler gave me the brights. I took this as a warning because we were the only ones on the road. I did not have to slow down because I always drive slow on this road. About a half mile up in the middle of the road was a deer being consumed by about four hogs. These hogs had to weigh 300 plus pounds. If I would of hit them no doubt some serious damage. I pulled up right in front and watched these huge hogs eat the deer. You could hear the crunching of the hogs eating the bones. I just imagined what they could do to a human. These animals are dangerous and will completely destroy a farmers field. They reproduce fast and will eat anything. Enjoyed the video

And for everybody that says “AR15’s have no use for anything other than killing people” or “nobody uses AR15’s for hunting because they’re too powerful🤣” or “why do you need more than 10 rounds”, you need to understand that the AR15 IS USED FOR HUNTING ALL THE DAMN TIME. It is the gun of choice for most people when hog hunting. Large capacity mags are ideal because hogs are usually found in large groups so you need multiple rounds to shoot multiple pigs. Also, the reason they aren’t used as deer rifles isn’t because they’re too powerful, it’s because they aren’t powerful enough. The .223/5.56 round is much less powerful than something like a 7mm magnum that many people often use in a deer rifle.

    • @jponz85

I get your point, but people unfortunately are also using these high mag capacity ar15s to shoot other people in masses. That's the problem

    • @Upsideround
      @Upsideround Год назад +5

The reason they aren't used as deer rifles is because it's unethical. most states don't allow large mags for big game hunting. .223 at 100yds is plenty powerful and legal for big game in most states. It's one thing to go after invasive species and take out large groups vs one animal that should only take one clean shot or maybe two. But I saw a texan go on a kill crazy rampage firing into a herd of elk here in CO had a large capacity weapon that was illegal, got buck fever and just started shooting. killed 2 cows, a calf, and the one bull he had a tag for. Thats why AR's arent used for big game.

After doing this hunting with firearms from the air, we now know this was a poor solution. Firearms and other loud noises causes wild pigs to scatter into smaller groups, and these smaller groups are much more fertile. Wild pigs are now invasive in 41 states.
The effective solution is to use a portable circle net that keeps the holler of pigs together, and shoot them all at once. And it's necessary to kill several million pigs per year just to break even.

Helicopter hunting is particularly prone to scattering pigs because the helicopter blades have supersonic snaps; helicopters scatter pigs within that noise radius. @Peter_Hudson i feel that there is always a more compassionate way of handling a situation if there is a will. Human beings right now are at the top of the food chain, having control over all nature and animals because of our ability to use tools. Every being wants two basic things, to survive and to reproduce. Early humans in the wild were always scared for their survival and hence they created houses and colonies to keep the wild animals out. We built societies so that we can survive. However when the first thing we wanted for ourselves was safety and survival, how did we become so blind to the fact that every being in the world lives for the exact same basic thing. The sign of a civilized society is how they treat their weakest member and right now our weakest members are these poor animals who just want to eat just like us. Yes they are destroying food meant for us, but even we grew crops on land that was never really ours! We humans marked our territory, cut down jungles and built homes and farms. Yes we need food and so do these animals and that's why i am saying there are more compassionate ways of dealing with every issue. You don't have to take someone's life. That's why i asked you to imagine if we were the weaker lot and we were more stupid but we still wanted food and safety. Wouldn't we be glad if our superiors were compassionate?

Wild boar is both from Texas - and not. It’s hard to remember that swine are native to Europe - not the Americas - because they’ve been here so long. Christopher Columbus brought the first eight pigs, intended as food, to the western hemisphere with his voyage to Cuba in 1493. The wild descendants of those pigs and others, estimated to number 6 million in 35 states, have been wreaking havoc ever since; annually, they cause $2.5bn in damage to crops, forestry and livestock producers. They can spread disease to both humans and domestic animals. With upwards of 2 million of these beasts in Texas alone, the state has become the center of a huge nationwide pig problem.

One day I called him to see if I could come fishing, and he said the pond was gone. I thought he lost his mind but it turns out he was right. Feral hogs came through and just destroyed it. Yesterday I went off the beaten path in Slovakia with my bicycle, while trying to go around a fishing lake. Then I got off at a height next to a crop field, already at dusk.
I rode about 100 meters, then suddenly stopped, because I saw about 6-7 boars in a pack on the field, about 30 meters away. They got alerted by my presence, then proceed to get out of the field and right onto my route and stopped there, not getting closer.
They just waited. I had a rush of adrenaline mixed with fear and thought, "what to do now".
Then I turned my front cycle light to blinking mode, switched my Bluetooth speaker (JBL Charge 5, can get quite loud) to max volume with punk-rock music (that'd been playing earlier on the trip), and prayed they would get out of the way, which they did and they disappeared in the forest in front of the crop field.
Did I do right or just had luck?

Then he goes hunting for them in their den. That’s a good strategy to get the ones that stay away from traps. The one that he releases, takes you to the wiser hogs.

Spend $2500 for guided whitetail hunt and kill one deer, spend $2400 and kill 50+ hogs from a helicopter. I'd put my money on the hog hunt. It's free to hunt them, just have a gun and permission from the landowner. You could feed a lot of hungry people with these hogs...if you could manage to get the meat to them, that is.
There’s also talk about converting hog corpses into biofuel. Since the hogs are damaging the biofuel industry, this might offset the damage somewhat. It also allows the corn wasted on biofuel to be used as food instead.
