Shooting Cats: Australia's War On Feral Cats

- In Shooting Cats VICE set out to explore the consequences of Australia's feral cat plague, and confront the uncomfortable and violent realities of dealing with it. Most suburban Australians give feral cats little thought. But for residents of the country’s rural fringes, they’re a diabolical pest and scourge on wildlife. Found in 99 percent of Australia, they’re estimated to kill more than two million native animals a day. That devastation has seen Kangaroo Island local Barry Green declare a personal war against cats; trapping and skinning them, before turning them into hats and fridge magnets.

Remember how many people were horrified about how many animals were killed during the 2019/20 bush fires in Australia. Feral cats kill about the same number each year. I love cats, but they have no place in the Australian bush.
Keep in mind that cats don’t love you back - they are not capable.
That's true but how do you think they got out into the Bush. its the fault of the cat lovers.
Yeah but the fires killed a bunch of animals in a short while and they effected humans personally unlike cats.
@@yeahokbuddy2510 I agree, the fires went from about August to March and became 'famous' from around the end of the year; but my point is that people thought a billion animals was really exceptional. And, it isn't, it's an annual event, just from one feral predator species.

@@fatooshtkd I honestly wish there was a way to preserve the endangered species without harming the feral cats living there. But there are none, and the only way to protect the endangered species is killing the non-endangered species. Sure, men many years ago have brought this creature to this place but we have to look at what’s important here. If they don’t do anything, species would go extinct and I can assure you nobody wants that.
That’s the funniest line I have heard in a long time.

@@FryingTiger
Unfortunately, people who support TNR (trap neuter re-abandon) programs for cats, don’t see the context of the damage that does. They only see cute cats that look sad and need rescuing. They don’t see the death and destruction that allowing them to roam free does to native ecosystems.

one female cat can have multiple litters with multiple kittens each year, and unlike humans they dont go into menopause. They will keep having kittens until the day they die. I love cats, but i understand especially for rural settings having to cull them. When i was growing up in British Columbia feral cats rarely became a problem because there was plenty of animals that would use them as prey. Completely true, although i would say its far more than 9 out of 10 when compared with all those who dont hunt/fish as thats most of the population, likely 99.9% of the hunters would know more than those who dont. Now if you tighten up the spectrum a bit and compare the knowledge of hunters/anglers to that of the highly outspoken anti-hunters, that's when you are probably looking at 90%, obviously favoring the hunters. Those outspoken anti-hunting lunatics typically know NOTHING about the environment and just repeat the crap they hear on their favorite social media pages, all in a pathetic attempt to pass it off as if they are well informed.
In the US, people hear about hunting feral hogs and they think it sounds like a good time (it is) but as soon as you bring up feral dogs or feral cats, they lose it
That is much agree in Arizona feral dogs an coyotes are wrecking urban areas an fareal dogs are forming packs an is spiking in numbers the reservation is considering doing mass culling

Feral dogs at least are closely related to wolves which are native to the United States. Feral cats on the other hand are descended from wildcats, which are only really found in Europe, Africa, and parts of Asia. As a result the latter does a lot more damage to native ecosystems than the former.

We need more of this here in Florida. I try to do my part
What ''wildlife'' do cats kill?
@@incorectulpolitic most endemic birds, lizards, snakes, and small mammals - including flying squirrels - are fair game. A huge issue is that bites and scratches that don't immediately kill most wildlife will likely do so secondary to the penetrative trauma. And toxoplasma is no joke. If it's a mammal - arboreal, terrestrial or aquatic - or a bird, then they're susceptible with varying pathologies between them, or whichever animal eats those animals. And, if you're flushing the fecal material of an indoor cat that's shedding toxo, and if your waste-water reclamation system not equipped to handle toxo, it's going right into the ocean or dumping spot of choice - so whales, dolphins, manatees, porpoises, etc aren't safe either.
Edit: spelling, and I forgot to summarize: the things eating most of those insects are huge targets, since they either roost on the ground, or are easy pickings at night.

For those who have a hard time understanding this, just picture this - in other continents, there are predators that hunt these feral cats (like owls as something said here), so their number will be under control; however, in isolated ecosystems, feral cats can easily become the top of the predatory pyramid, without anything to hold them back - which could be disastrous for native species. What these men and women are doing was just to act as a higher level of the ecosystem pyramid - that's just it.
For those who have a hard time understanding this, just picture this - there are 8 billions humans on earth, if we kill just half of them we wouldnt need to kill feral cats which would be even a more efficient solution

I learned one thing after watching the whole video: The so-called cat or "animal" lovers who sends hate to these guys without knowing the context are *hyprocites*
I'm an animal lover, but I'm realistic about it. Turn your pet or livestock out into the wild and you are going to cause headaches for everyone. Part of being an animal lover is also loving the native wildlife and protecting it against domestics which have gone feral. The people in this video are on the pointy end of that stick, but those of us who really do care about animals should thank them, not chastise them. They are the ones who have to pick up after other peoples' mess, and the fact that they are doing it in the most humane ways possible with as little damage to other animals and the environment as possible is to be lauded. You are spot on in pointing out that people who call themselves animal lovers but hate these guys are hypocrites. True animal lovers need to focus their efforts on pet owners and livestock operators who fail to keep their animals confined. If your animal goes feral, then expect that it will not survive, and that if it does survive, it will cause untold damage.
Humans CAUSED the bad situation that now requires the killing. Nobody is doing GOOD here, it is ALL bad, very bad, a LOSE LOSE Deal.
Lesson learned... do better next time, .. don't cause such problems with animals.
This issue with invasive species has been their cry out slogan for years. You see them killing species who thrive. They're the hypocrites. What about farm animals, don't they destroy the land as well? All animals pose a threat if you cry out to the government and the world that they pose a threat to the ecosystem. Any animal who don't pose a direct threat to humans must be left alone. How sure are they that those said plant and animals species went extinct because of these so called invasive species? Just an excuse for their evil behavior. I doubt there is even that much feral cats because baby kittens are vulnerable at a young age. They die often in the wild. If you'd seen feral cats, they often have 1 or 2 surviving kittens that reach adulthood. Only in captivity or within a home can they raise more kittens that survive. I bet you there wasn't a threat to the ecosystem on the first place. Just Australians wanting to rage war against animals that don't favor them

But the feral cats are domestic cats, but escaped, that's all they are, it's no use pretending they are "different", they are THE SAME.
So, as long as people have domestic cats in Australia, even if you get rid of all feral cats, they soon will be replaced by new feral cats because of the source - domestic cats turned feral, you have to get rid of domestic cats completely from Australia and Tasmania, but you won't, you just have this half hearted attempt which doesn't solve the problem at all for the long term. What you have done is irreversibly damaged the biodiversity of Australia by repopulating the land with cats, dogs and rabbits that completely outcompete the indigenous species, it's good that you're trying to do something about it, but it will never be enough unless you remove them ALL. Feral and domestic cats that are allowed to roam outside are still a huge problem in the USA. A well fed cat still hunts and kills--it is just in their nature. Birds--especially natives like the Whip-poor-will that hides on the ground--are very vulnerable to cats. Estimates are over two billion native birds per year are killed by cats in the USA alone--not counting all the other challenges to native birds like habitat loss. I used to have barn cats on my farm, but they are all removed now. The wrens came here and nest safely now--we had none because they hunt low to the ground, hoping under brush to hunt for bugs--irresistible to a cat. The wrens took care of my cabbage worm problem--my crops look better. Now I have a healthy barred owl population hunting the mice at night. We actually have LESS mice now that I got rid of the cats. Indoor cats as pets are great, but they are not native to the ecosystem here.
the cats are having no affect on the population of pigeons, sparrows, doves, grackles, squirrels, rabbits, prairie dogs, rats and mice.

No one gives a shit about culling feral pigs usually, or factory farming em and other animals, but shoot feral dogs or cats and people lose their shit. People eat dogs, people lose their shit, its all emotion and no logic.
@Not Berber says the man who wants to wipe out a species because he hates them. Even the old man who traps and kills cats does not hate them. wolves kill baby animals all the time, so do humans, humans kill for sport as well. I have seen dogs kill things and not eat them as well. Like I said cats like any animal have their place, its people taking them and letting them breed go feral in places that do not belong which is the problem. I am all for wiping out feral cats in places they do not belong, but not wiping out the entire species.
I'm a Yank in the States, here. Ridding feral cats is a very responsible way to protect native species. Your efforts are noble and commendable. Those who would disagree haven't got a clue!
I support your efforts!
I prefer my cats to your native species. You come for my cats, you won't like it.
A Reb in the states myself and I agree.
I was looking up clutch adjustments.
You Tube: “Hey, you want to see how to kill some cats in Australia “ 🤪🤯
I just turned on my RUclips this is my first suggestion 😂😁😂
I swear last thing I searched was 06 Chevy 6.0... then next thing I know I’m rooting for cats to die
Lmao
Chevy and pussy are one in the same. That's why it pulls up 🤣
soupertrooper A Solo Hd clutch setup. Then this pops up as recommended. I love the RUclipss suggestions sometimes. The bad part is I watched the whole video. So now I have all the Australian videos on pest as a recommended video 😂😂
Keep up the great work guys!
I am an absolute cat lover and I've had cats around me all my life.
But I do understand that this must be done. It hurts my heart to see this, but it would even hurt me more to see cats erradicating other species.
oooooooooooooooooooooooo
Finally a logical cat lover.
All these cat lovers in the comments just favor cats and condemn people who do this smh. But they don’t realize how these feral cats can destroying environment so quick because they kill thousands.
Agree, I mean they're killing other animals to the point of extinction,it must be really done.
@@Mike-kl5yc they should be killing all those rats that are infesting Australia. how the fuc* can they have both a cat problem and a mouse problem? you would think that one would help solve all the other
@@nomanejane5766 u dumb Fk cats literally kills small animals just for fun. they need to be controlled immediately before a small specie get extinct again.
Feral cats will eat almost anything and wipe out ground birds fast.
Quail population is down here in central Arkansas dew to house cats.
So the dodo birds went extinct because of cats eating them not by humans? Well I geuss history got that wrong.
@@terrymurphy7790 hey smartass hopw about literally googling dodo bird and reading about it? "The human population on Mauritius (an area of 1,860 km2 or 720 sq mi) never exceeded 50 people in the 17th century, but they introduced other animals, including dogs, pigs, cats, rats, and crab-eating macaques, which plundered dodo nests and competed for the limited food resources." you dumb ass fucktard
Terry Murphy Haha, you're funny. The reason dodo birds got so large was because they didn't need to defend themselves against natural predators. In this case, the "introduced species" happened to be humans, which was what caused their demise.
Ground birds? Save the emu!
This guy can literally have a conversation on the many ways to skin a cat
He has 1438+ trophies that he relives and dreams about. I mean, I'm glad the psychopath found a job, but I hope that's enough to sate his blood lust. I'm not against population control if it means a healthier ecosystem, but c'mon, how can people not see certain jobs attract certain people?
Here in Germany if a hunter sees a cat that is more than 200 meters (in some states 500 meters) away from housing, he is allowed to shoot it. Most people have no idea how many wild animals are killed by cats.
He went John wick on them cats because they killed his possum. Respect
Fuck that possum
😂🤣 John Wick.....you working again John?!
Best comment on this thread.
Carl Locke lol
Lol good one
I grew up with cats, I love all my kitties dearly. But this is a different situation, these feral cats are basically hyper predators and have to be dealt with. These are proud intelligent people addressing an urgent issue the best they can. I don't fault them one bit
Thank you for being open to the situation, and listening as to why. These people should be given more credit for the work they do.
hyper predators? then what the fuck are we? we literally ate the do do birds to fucking death. cutting down massive amounts of forests and causing forest fires ect. but yea these cats are the real hyper predators lmfao
@@kylemendes7246 s ferral cats do for survival because they arent intelligent enough for our brains we know to make food how ever we toppest in food chain
@@kylemendes7246 difference being we had the intelligence to grow a conscious and learn that what we were doing is bad, yet ppl are still too fucking stupid to put greed aside for an animals sake, least we try n make up for it with conservation and preservation of species, cats are stupid and will eat and eat and eat till theyve killed every single thing they can. You cannot compare what weve done to cats, our intelligence is far too great. Individually atleast
Who are not "hyper predators"
can we talk about the sheep tho he was so cute
Cutie
Mmmmm
It need it's own Episode
He woke up and Choose violence
Honestly I almost thought it was a Miniature Lama XD
I worked for the RSPCA and the ferals that came in were extremely scarey. I helped with the euthanising, I saw too many strays, surrenders and problem animals coming in all the time. I lived on a property and knowing what would happen to wildlife because of irresponsible pet owners ferals and especially introduced species gone feral do not have a place with our unique native wildlife.
