- Les Hiddins heads west through Australia's Gulf Country to Jasper Gorge in the Northern Territory. Along the way he explores underground lava tubes, builds a bush washing machine, finds a 'lost city' and recounts the rich history of an old cattle route - the Marranji track. At Jasper Gorge, he seeks out a fascinating Aboriginal stone structure - a unique method of harvesting bush tucker.
'Bush Tucker Man: East to West' originally aired on the ABC in 1990.

Les is my hero, i love the Australian outback because of this man, his heart for the original in habitants and there lessons and culture has educated a generation of Australians and affected them is such a positive way. He's so humble, too humble, he basically pioneered the documentation and identification of Australian bush tucker not that he will outwardly say it was all him. Think it's about time he was renamed Sir Les Hiddins.
Wednesday, cup of coffee, another Bush Tucker Man - beautiful middle of the week. Love that series. Cheers from Poland.
Great to see you watching an Australian classic :) all the way from Poland
Gday from Australia
Re watching these as an adult and I am more and more impressed with Lez, what a true ledgend
Hmmmm didn't know that les spelled his name with a z
Bush Tucker Man - Aussie Legend
first to comment so heres my take . This bloke and Malcolm Douglas. Best docos on Aussie landscape with a deep respect and acknowledgement of Aboriginal customs and knowledge . Way before their time . Time to heal
Malcolm was awesome to watch,
Miss this series! Used to watch it as kids...something in our house that wasn't missed!
Used to watch this on sky tv uk in 1993 and loved it then and still do
Love watching these. Trips, as well as trips down memory lane.
Loved this show and Bush Mechanics when I was a kid..and Police Rescue too...we made awesome TV back then, now it's all crap like the Block. I'm so glad this has been uploaded.
Or MAFS,never watching that crap
Thanks so much ABC Australia not only is The BTM (still) superb but it takes me on a massive nostalgia trip every time a fresh episode is posted. Cheers guys!
Tell you what, this here's a great example of a place to get a feed. This spot by the edge of the waterhole is close enough to the road that every now and then a wild Les Hiddins will come by and just drop in some delicious steaks!
~A Yabbie
Also a place where some dumb city slicker/foreigner will casually drop in for lunch with me.
Mick Dundee's Mate.
There's no-one better! Love Les
A fantastic communicator with a great sense of humour. Been watching these shows since before I emigrated to Aus in 2003. The Outback as portrayed by Les is one of the reason I came to Aus. A national treasure. Thankyou.
Thanks for uploading this , I loved this show back when it was on tv and it's still excellent after all these years . Thanks Les, bush tucker man you are a legend 👍👍
can you imagine how much fun the crew had filming all these episodes? amazing
Currently travelling Australia, because of my idols like Les Higgins, The Legend, cheers for the inspiration 👍
Brilliant, required viewing in my house as a kid 👍
Love having this show back , love it , thanks Les 👍
One day I'll spend £10, buy a ticket and emigrate. ;-) Love watching this again! used to watch this on cable TV back in the 80s In UK
Les was a regular fixture on British TV in the 80's, and I couldn't get enough! my dad and I loved this series, it kindled a fascination with the Antipodes and travel in general, i now live in New Zealand. I do not doubt that the bush tucker man has saved lives in Australia. good on 'im!
From when the ABC was the still best. A long time ago now.
Never seen this episode before. Seen the others dozens of times. Thanks for uploading
Just finished Malcolm Douglas series and came across Lez, love these adventurers showing the wild heart of Australia.

A man beyond his years still love this stuff one of the first true adventures in oz love it
love the air con ..........
Just stumbled upon this series. Great information on one the most amazing Continents in the World. Surprised how old this series is, feels like it was just filmed weeks ago. Look forward to watching the rest of the seasons and episodes.
that was so good, many thanks for that
Brilliant stuff. Pity that we don't seem to listen to what the trees are telling as Les suggested.
I forgot how great the score musc was 😊
Remember watching as a kid
Taught me a lot as a youngster old Les
absolutely fascinating! 🏞️🌄📹🛻😎🤙 Thanks ABC 🎬
Best thing on RUclips
YAY another Ep. haha Seriously awesome.
I watched Les as a kid in the 90's and now wonder why it is that I found so much solace when I lived in Weipa, the Boulia Triangle and out to the west chasing shale oil in the Georgina Basin
Loved this show
Great series, Vale Rory, another " One-Off".
What was going on there with the washing machine scene and the book? 11:35 🤣 I can't unsee it now.
Just enjoy watching the Bush Tucker Man, learn a lot of survival skills incase its needed.👍
In true Spirit of Malcolm Douglas mate, watching from kiwi land,
Glad I found this show. Very interesting
I love the opening little picture squares reminds me of Harry Butler
Gosh I love this.
Mate this is my country, I grew up in the tablelands and worked in the golf. No better country. Not quite the same now but still unbelievable.
You "worked in the golf"?? Well we can see what your handicap is. 🙄😊
This guy is a Awesome could watch him for hours more please
King Les
Sir Les Hiddins
Brilliant
Les is one of the best. Malcolm Douglas was a legend too. Been watching these shows since they began but one thing I'm wondering to this day. What's with the unusual hat? I've never seen anyone else wear one ever and I'm Australian. What style is it? Is it Les Hiddins own bash?
“Along the track you find these government bores” even in the Bush you can’t get away from bloody politicians! 😁
Makes me want to go for an explore.
Where was that music coming from during the drone footage at the lost city? I can't make up if it is coming from the drone or from one of the buildings.
Very similar to how Native American tribes got eagle feathers. Amazing
Classic!
That fruit is young guava. Better to eat it if its ripe, it will be soft and sweet. :) less you hungry and needs to it for survival.
Greetings from Denmark 💎
HEY YA LES. HOPE YOU ARE WELL. CHEERS JONNIE THE PHOTOGRAPHER... BORRALOOLA 99.
I lived and roamed in the bush with Gudjil Gudjil and Jimmy Goona Goona.
How astounding and wonderful, good for you.
@@raypestrapur2897 My old mate reckons he's related to the boxers Cassius Clay and Rocky Gattellari. His name is Johnny Mudd.😉
man there's something about the word saturated that tickles my pickle. The way it sounds on the ear and rolls off the tongue
This show is scripted and shot, but it is still a really nice bit of the real thing as to the real bit of what one should expect and look for in the areas covered in the shows, Kudos to Leslie Higgins, Sir I think you are one of a few with a true spirit of adventure. Thank you!
Does Les ever make comments on here?
I reckon they were after what we call black kites or square tailed Kites
what's amazing is native American tribes would do the same thing to catch eagles for the feathers for ther headress
With all the developments in technology, digital cameras, drones etc. Why it is that content as good as this isn't being made these days? We are presented with ever increasing numbers of junk programs and nobody seems to be interested in making really great TV???
Nah mate gotta walk out a Toyota dealership then straight to ARB fro $30,000 of shityoudontneed and bounce those 33's over a rock that's not even on the track until you bust a diff
Scottys gone walkabout is a great self made Oz channel
Deådly Moordiji 🎶🐸
atleast a kiwi showed interest lol
what do you think about Malcolm Douglas mate?
He can have my Hawk dinner!
the first and the best
(I'll do this again) Seriously: what happened to Les Hiddin's hat? It should have ended up on display in the Bushman's Hall of Fame as cultural memorabilia the way Gene Krantz's vest and Indiana Jones leather jacket do in the Smithsonian in Washington.
Well the hat grows on you.
Excuse my ignorance but why would you want to catch a hawk?
ABC just announced they're restricting this series in a few weeks. Dunno if that means repeats or new episodes. 24/9/2022
Reserecting *
Anyone else reckon he looks like tom hanks
Amazing where you can go when you are backed by the army.
A 500 year old tree would only be born during Columbus if the Americas were discovered in the 1700's. Perhaps America never would have been created! Good on ya Les.
uncle les
Done
Bear Grylls... eat ur heart out
Who ?
Lava flowed for almost 100 km? Not likely. But the tubes are there, and they are almost 100 km long.... so.. obviously there is another, ignored, explanation.
If they can't get you then they'll get your loved ones . They Gunna teach you not to be a whistle blower
Why don't they make these programs any more instead of that mindless b.s sitcoms
not trying to be rude... but this is horrible.
Quintessential Australia, the colours the landscapes, the experience…..this is an average day in out-back Australia…rustic unforgiving and beautifully unique to any where else on this planet….and always home no matter how harsh or inhospitable. I grew up in the country with things constantly spiking, biting and tripping me out, now I miss the environmental abuse.✌🦘
