  • In terms of sales, Toyota and Ford have been locked in a battle for the top of the charts with the Hilux and Ranger, a feat which was impressive for the Hilux given that it was essentially 10 years old.
    It has finally been replaced and we gathered together the new 2016 Toyota Hilux 4x4 and facelifted 2015 Ford Ranger together for a head to head review.
    We took the bakkies offroad at Klipbokkop, a legendary 4x4 testing facility in the Western Cape for this comparison.

    I owned the previous generation Toyota Hilux. It was bumpy and noisy but it got the job done. And, with my country's tax regime, it's extremely expensive so I was very happy with the resale value that Toyota has. I have a few friends who own the Ford Ranger, but one year on, they want to sell it. I am not saying anything, but Toyota holds its value pretty well. It's not just the design, but the long-term mileage, maintenance, etc ... which makes this truck a real gem. I just got the new redesigned Toyota Hilux (from Thailand) and the vehicle is everything I expected and more. The insides are more car-like now and if you're upgrading from an old Hilux, it's very luxurious and comfortable. The outside is big and bulky and real work-man-like but also sleek. I have had many heads turning as I drove home from work. All in all, a very very nice truck. I will be using this as my work truck for 10-15 years. Cheers from Bhutan

    3 Years ago I was in the market for a new bakkie and decided to go for the Ford because it was just the better option at the time. I'm a big Toyota fan since childhood, but the old Hilux did not compare well against the new Ford at the time. I'm very happy and love my Ranger. No problems so far and service is great at Ford Porters Auto in Cape Town. The Hilux is back but if they were 3 years earlier I would have probably gone for the Hilux and not the Ford. Now I'm so happy with my Ranger that it will take some convincing to change back. Also the service interval for the Hilux is 10000km where the Ranger is 15000km. I like the look of the new Ranger over the Hilux as well. I wish Toyota did a better job with the styling because that nose kills me.

      So far the Ford has been good. Going for almost 4 years and 90000km without any problem. Don't be brand loyal, you never know what will happen in the future. Look at all the loyal Zuma supporters being forced to stay loyal by their own doing. I'll will buy any brand that is the best on the day. All these bakkies fighting to be king is good for us consumers. Who knows what my next bakkie will be, depends who is the king on that day.

      Yeah for sure! Douchebag. That's why there is a mass class action for the Toyota Hilux with failing DPF. Google it to see in Australia. The modern Toyota Hilux is a total failure, buy one before they installed a DPF and you'll be right. But no, they are not reliable. That's why there is a class action and why Toyota has admitted the DPF is a massive issue in the Hilux (Landcruiser not affected )

    Well, here in America, we dream about landing our hands on a Hilux or a J70 Land Cruiser. That Ford Ranger does not even exist in our radar. Toyota, Harley Davidson, Mercedes Sprinter, and full size diesel trucks are vehicles that hold their value really well.

    I've just bought a Ranger XLT, made in Argentina. 7 airbags, ISOFix, ESP, etc. and a 5-year garantee, Against the Hilux's 3-year garantee and 4 airbags. Though I also think the higlux is better looking than the ranger, and it also looks better quality in the interior, the Ford is more powerful and more sophisticated. The tuch screen in the Toyota is old and does not respond immediatly to the touch. It also lacks Android Auto on it. The screen on the ranger reacts instantaneusly, it contains Microsoft Sync 3, Apple Car Pay and Android Auto. It has voice control even for the air conditioning, which by the way, is dual, whereas in the higlux is not. Just some things to mention...

    For core 4WD features, go for hilux. Unbeatable. For toughness and extreme safety, go for ranger. This is from a guy (+3 others) who came out alive and unscratched from a 5 times rolling mishap in a Ranger. Truck was totalled but we are all alive. They mean it when they say Rangers are "Built Tough".

    Hi guys. Details from Malaysia
    Ford ranger does look very impressive but the customer Service here are terrible. Their nothing compared to Toyota Centers. Plus the wildtrek is a complete waste. It's too expensive that 90percent of the users might not need that extra power. Also it's too electronized. In my personal opinion I just never liked cars which is to electronized.
    Toyota hilux 2016 is almost near perfection. Not as powerful as the ford, but it definitely has a better resale value here. Most people I know feels Toyota hilux is more reliable in the Long run. Again on my personal opinion, pick up trucks are suppose to be rough and tough, that's it's identity, it's an experience. But now, it feels soft.

    • @edwwong1003
      @edwwong1003 5 лет назад +2

      Will be buying the wild trak soon, the safety feature of ranger is more important than resale value, as for Ford have terrible resale value?, the same goes for BMW, Audi, Volvo, and yet still there are so many of those on the road, that's expected when you drive continental cars

    No ways Ciro, you committed the ultimate motoring journo sin: having a car vs car story, and then concluding that it is too close to call.
    By your own admission, the Ranger is more powerful, feels sturdier, has better rear legroom and has more useful ports and the powerful Sync 2 system (we all know Toyota's multimedia systems have always been lacking), and you still consider it a close thing? The quality of the interior is nowhere near close either: the Ranger honestly takes it by a mile, although I'll hand it to Toyota for definitely being better than the outgoing model.
    For me you can tell a lot about a car just by opening its door, and I was underwhelmed with the light door-opening action of the new Hilux. Maybe having a lightweight vehicle is good off-road, but it goes against the whole uber-masculine chest-thumping reason most men buy 4x4s.
    Regardless, I think you've sold out a little on the biggest competition in the local market, and it wouldn't hurt to re-test and confidently state your own winner.

    From the Jamaican perspective individually. Toyotas a'rent what they used to be, the marketplace is pretty balanced and I'd say Toyota is lagging behind, "losing their touch". Since the release, Ive seen a few Hiluxs but far more Rangers then Amaroks. Jamaican conditions are rough Ive seen plenty of the previous generation of ute; mostly Tritions, D-Maxs and Rangers. The hiluxs are plagued with electrical issues and dont hold up under real working conditions. I say the D-max, then the Triton for reliability. Anyways The Ranger is a superior vehicle overall.

    Interesting matchup. Here in 2020 in USA the Ranger has been on sale for just under 2 years (yes, except for the engine and transmission, we got this same Ranger as a " new " 2019 model.) Only one engine/transmission here: 2.3 EcoBoost petrol engine mated to a 9 speed automatic.
    The Toyota? We used to get the HiLux here, then Toyota came up with the North American only (?) Tacoma. In 2021 the Tacoma will see a re-design, the first in...? For all intents and purposes, there are 2 engines but 1 transmission on offer: a 2.7 inline 4 cylinder and a 3.5 V6, both petrol. Ostensibly, you have the choice of an automatic or manual transmission, but the manual with the 4 cylinder is next to impossible to specify while the V6 with manual is a tiny bit easier to specify...but the manuals will probably " disappear " for 2021. Oddly(?), the ability to buy a manual trasmissioned Tacoma can depend on which region of the country you live in.
    And yes, a used Tacoma can sometimes fetch as much as a new one if it is less than 2 years old and well cared for.

    Your next video should be a battle between the top of the range KIA Sorento with a LandRover Discovery 4. I know these cars are very different but you can get a very good second hand Disco for R692,000 which is the price of the Sorento. So shoot.

    as much as like the Ford but I just bought a 2016 hilux and that was because of the resale value is so high for Toyota . and also this one replaced my old 1998 hilux. I know it's a huge gap bit these cars last long time and are really tough .

    I personally would take the Ford Ranger. I haven't been in the facelifted version, but I was lucky enough to drive the 2.4 SRX and the 2.8 4x4 Raider Hilux and I have to say:
    - The ride quality is something I have never experience in a Hilux
    - The interior - oh my word. It's too premium
    - And the engine is a lot quieter than in the previous generation Hilux and Ford Ranger (which is still the same)
    However, the lack of rear seat air vents, the lack of LED lights and keyless start in 2016 (the Australian version has all LED and keyless start) is very disrespectful and very much like Toyota. Toyota is becoming a lot like Telkom - they are too comfortable. The just recently caught up in the terms of ride quality and they seem to not get the memo.
    In short, the disrespect from Toyota is enough to push me to get a Ford Ranger (even if it's the older generation before the facelift)

    • @JackFN_VR64
      @JackFN_VR64 8 лет назад +1

      What these companies do is they keep certain features like LED and keyless start back at first, and then at next facelift or special edition Eg. Legend 50/whatever, they 'introduce' those features to create more of an impact. Now with LED's and keyless entry blah blah blah.
      Toyota did it with the previous Fortuner. Overseas had satnav and TSC & such right from the start while SA didn't, then when the facelift came the facelifted Fortuner got satnav, TSC...

    As long as BOTH keep using drum rear brakes and not considering that a pick up trucks must have a complete braking system with 4 WHEELS WITH DISC BRAKES AND A 4 CHANNEL ABS SYSTEM, I will always prefer a Ford F150 or an American Chevy Colorado Turbo Diesel.
    Drum brakes are not as safe as disc brakes and always require more maintenance.

    • @my87tbo
      @my87tbo 8 лет назад

      Think about semi trucks. They are starting to use disk brakes but more than 90% use drum brakes.

      There is an issue with the d-max as well, if you put bigger tires on it you more or less lose low range because you cant gear the diffs down to make up for the larger tires.
      The hilux might have some makeup on it, but it is still the only realistic choice for a durable pickup.

    Totally agree that the two brand options are very close.., how ever I have to say that the Ranger looks like a truck that means business and it also has a drive train that is both more powerful and also proven.., where as the Hilux really does look like a car trying to be a truck, Toyota across the board really seem to have gone off the rails when it comes to vehicle design lately.., and as for being the best part of half a litre down in cubic capacity that is significant, in my eyes I was taught that it is by far way more sensible to have a larger engine working more relaxed rather a smaller engine under more stress trying to make similar output levels.... you wouldn't place a 13 litre 550 in a triple Road Train when you can have a 16 litre 600 to 750 would you... would you..??

    • @amkmkamamakami371
      @amkmkamamakami371 8 лет назад +1

      The hilux looks like the future .. The ford ranger looks like a girls version of the f150 raptor .. The hilux being slim and lighter gets through everything much easier than the oversized overpriced bogan ute ( ford ranger ) and in the end the 79 series work mate land cruiser leaves the ford ranger in the dust.

    • @hootizzz
      @hootizzz 8 лет назад +1

      +Landcruiser is bae you dumbfuck.., you have just proven again how much you have been reaming yourself with that Toyota dildo... I think you need to remember that this video was a test between the Hilux and the Ranger at approx $50,000 each and not the Landy 70 series at more like $90,000+..!! yes of course the 70 series would be better than the Ranger, but at twice the price I would fucking hope so..!! the comparison here is the Ranger and the Hilux, and speaking from our experience with a working 2012 Ranger in the bush every day ( not a gay street toy ) that now has near 170,000km on the clock with nothing but normal servicing and NO breakages I think it speaks for itself... so go back to your bedroom and lube yourself up again tugger and have another go.... hahahahahahahah.... ps - don't bother coming back again unless you have some real 4x4 experience to share because I love messing around with little keyboard warriors like you that think they know what they're talking about... hahahaha.

    • @amkmkamamakami371
      @amkmkamamakami371 8 лет назад +1

      +hootizzz alright mate .. Wait till you get that little African truck stuck and you open your mouth to the hilux that was gonna pull your little smart ass out .. Your more up tight and biased than Kim Kardashians fucking sweat pants .. The hilux doesn't have to prove itself because everyone knows it's the most trustworthy strongest most hard working ute on the market .. You wanna talk about 4x4ing yet you probably stay on the trails .. Try backtracking through the Nullarbor plains than come back to me.
      I already won this when you started with the hate comments on a truck you've probably never driven .. And the base model 70 series land cruiser is around 50k jackass so close your little ford supporter ass and shove a commodore dildo down your throat.

    • @hootizzz
      @hootizzz 8 лет назад +1

      +Landcruiser is bae hahahaha... again and again and again you continue to prove how much you use that Toyota dildo..!! I told you to come back with hard out hard facts and examples.., but instead you just try your luck out on some insults which only prove that you look at photos of Kim K while you are using that Toyota dildo..!! also I would suggest you go do a bit more homework on the pricing, a 70 series the spec we require with crew cab etc is $86k + tax where the Ranger ( and the Hilux for that mater ) are just over the $50k + tax mark.., so when you get your drivers license and your dad lets you have a drive of his Hilux come back then and we will continue this little discussion... hahahaha..... you little warriors are so much fun... ps - there is nothing to win here, I just like seeing little tuggers like you get so defensive over something they have no idea about, but think that they do... have a great day...

    • @amkmkamamakami371
      @amkmkamamakami371 8 лет назад

      +hootizzz my dad has a Toyota Land Cruiser 200 series land cruiser vx 2016 model and before that he had a Toyota Prado 150 series 2011 model .. I don't know where you got the thought he had an hilux .. Maybe one of your stupid assumptions again .. Fact is the ford ranger is a shitty Mazda BT-50 and the hilux is a slimmer ,lighter ,trusted ,stronger ,stylish and a lot more durable .. And I never said the ford ranger was complete shit but it is a completely different style of ute .. And has a lot more weight and that gives it it's downfall on the 4x4 tracks.
      And hell I was in the backseat of me dads mates ford ranger and it is the hardest most uncomfortable cheapest looking interior I've ever seen .. And that's on a dirt road .. But going through the ford's (ford is a platform across a river ,stream that you can drive/walk across - I know your stupid so that's what it is) which were overflown because of heavy downfall was no challenge for the heavy ass ford ranger.

    The Ford definitely looks better than the Toyota but reliability of the Toyota is undisputed. Not to say the Ford is unreliable but everybody knows someone with an insane number of miles on their Hilux/Takoma. I think the smart play is to find a used Ranger coming off of a lease and take advantage of the Ford's much lower resale value.
