@@generizze6243 The Ranger Raptor is a lot more fun and totally worth the extra money. The only reason you could have for buying the Hilux instead of the Ranger Raptor is because you can't afford it. The previous generation Ranger Raptor didn't deserve the 'Raptor' name, which is why I never bought one. But the current one definitely does. Toyota is still stuck in the past with a vehicle that can only compete with the previous generation Ranger Raptor. They are like Apple - they know people will keep buying the Hilux no matter what, so they don't bother improving it much. The same goes for the 79 series - totally overpriced and barely any improvements. I also waited ages for the new Land Cruiser 300 series before I bought one, because my 2014 LC200 was so similar to the newer ones, The LC300 is the first one in ages to actually be a significant upgrade, and I bet I'll keep this one for the next 10 years as well, because the updates will be so insignificant.
Awesome vid fellas! Iv personally got a gr hilux myself and bought it for the price difference, maintenance, diesel fuel and reliability. I’m not biased at all with cars love me a nice raptor just a bit out of the price range!
Trucks aren't intended for drag race, these trucks (Raptor and GR) are made for offroad hability, so this GR has reached it's goal...there is nothing toyota has to do in this truck. Any way this GR held pretty well against those V6, it's just 4 cylinders(being a Toyota). My thought
Everyone saying rangers are junk/unreliable have obviously never owned an N80 or an N70. My N70 did injectors twice and blew an auto gearbox and my N80 was in for 4 new DPF’s and had a turbo let go. My V6 ranger which has done 10k km(55k km in 9 months) offroad towing 2.5t hasn’t had a single issue. Flex’s better, tows better with better fuel economy, is 10x more comfortable to drive and actually has basic creature comforts like decent seat and Apple car play
I have no problem racing any Toyota hilux any day of the week My old 2015 px2 5 cylinder ranger with 335000k on it is making 182 rear wheel kw on a safe tune and over 200+ kw at the motor with 33" mud tyres and it does it day in day out
sadly that's the hype for last few years. I personally can't wait sportscar off road races :) If utes have to be quick at launch - why my M5 can't do proper off road track??!
Next time include the triton in a drag race, I am not surprised the hilux struggled to beat any version of the ranger in a race The guy driving the ranger also launched each ranger terribly, the bi turbo would have probably won if the driver was more experienced.
Muy bien video se ve la comparación de la Hilux GR y aunque su fuerte no sea la velocidad se ve que con un competidor directo da la talla porque recordemos que la Ranger raptor es un segmento en prestaciones y precio totalmente diferente
I must be missing the point. Drag races in 4x4 4 door utes with chintzy little engines? My goodness, mine is bigger/faster than yours. Surely anybody wanting some fast acceleration would NOT be looking at one of these types of vehicles? Why not do a test with 4 people inside and 2-3 hundred kilos of tools in the tray and see what happens.
Toyota needs to grow some balls and put the 3.5 TT V6 petrol from LC300 into next model Hilus to truly be worthy of a GR badge. That would be a very compelling vehicle to take a look at if the suspension was as good as Raptor
The reason I purchased a gr sport hilux over any ranger is long term reliability. I did quite a bit of research and the 10R80 auto is still in the middle of a long list of law suits overseas because of poor reliability. The ecoboost 4 has the cylinders way to close together and if it runs above normal running temps it blows head gaskets and running way to much boost standard to be long term reliable. And now the Raptor has valve spring problems and could be facing engine replacement I mean come on. Early days for the new ranger not looking good so far!!!
Bullshit.. i have been hosing hiluxes everywhere for 10 months now and not once have I lost to a hilux even the petrol ones. The only thing that has failed in my Gen2 Ranger Raptor were the tyres. When you take them to wakefield park raceway for 20 laps those all terrains don't last long! But this current generation of Fords are built like an M1 Abrams Tank. A tank with a jet engine.
Hilux the weakness lies in the very long 5th gear, I have experienced it in my innova 5th gear seems to be intended for cruising so it is easy to reach 200 km/h easily in 5th gear before shifting in 6th gear
Be good to see you review an XLS 2L with tech pack (as you've tested all of the other Rangers). They're a fair bit lighter too so would be nice to see the 0-100 times.
The “only as good” comment can only be true if “good” is defined as the ability to win drag races - certainly there are bigger considerations when buying a double cab 4x4?
After seeing the issues with EV, my mind is moving more towards a ute. I don't care that much about the straight line speed but I care more about the carrying and pulling capacity. I don't know much about these utes but your website is putting the Ford in front. however I do know that you have had some mechanical issues with Ford. What is the latest thoughts on which brand to buy out of these but I guess all the Utes. What are they like for parts out of the major centres etc.
@nurullah5845 Tell that to all the Toyota owners who had blocked DPF systems and faulty injectors. Toyota have become no better than the rest of them.
I have a 2015 Fortuner GX - 10 yr warranty on dpf and lifetime owner warranty on drivetrain issues to do with dpf / timing chain and a nice letter from Mr Toyota Australia apologising for the issues. After that class action re the dpfs…. And dealer replaced dpf (took 1 day) after I reported a puff of smoke on regen cycle “just in case” and video recorded a cold start timing chain sequence on record for future claims. This was all to reassure me the vehicle has ongoing backing by dealer. And its 5 years out of warranty… and, no, it cost me not one cent for the work / checking / cold start timing chain check and dpf. And no dealer network in Australia is better for remote regions. My other car is a GR Yaris….. anyway, reliability is the only relevant factor. I even wish my 8 yr old Fortuner GX had fewer electronics….
After seeing GR Yari & more recently the Rolla was really expecting something more Lambo from Toyota, but instead they simply build the GR brand up, give the normal 2.8l hilux a tune up and slap a badge on it... Excellent marketing strategies Toyota
Like I keep saying, "Hilux GR Sport" doesn't mean "GR Hilux" and the distinction of naming conventions matter. That doesn't say that a true GR Hilux would automatically be a Raptor killer just based on name alone, but it's clear that the Hilux GR Sport is not that vehicle, despite some messaging confusion potentially suggesting otherwise.
After driving the holiday for a month it really only has power between 2200 - 3500rpm definitely hates being revved. Tbh the 4 cylinder was nicer and even weirder the triton was the nicer engine (never thought I’d say that)
This is a while back, but the Samoa Water Authority changed their fleet from the Hilux to the XLT Fords when they first came out. They found the Fords weren't as good off road and tended to get stuck. They went back to Hilux after that. Not sure if Ford have improved on this, but it sort of stuck with me, so not being a speed guy, I would go Hilux, having said that however, that Raptor looks really cool.
Yes to power mode - and it makes no difference. It’s a throttle calibration. When you go to 100% throttle it doesn’t matter if power mode is on or not. S mode also makes no difference - it just holds to a maximum gear.
Yes, luckily you didn't buy it for drag racing! It also won't carry a tonne of wood in GR Sport spec (payload is limited to 780kg, inc. driver). In fact it's so limited by GCM that you'll only be able to carry 80kg if you tow at 3500kg braked.
Next time you should try a v6 4 liter Hilux, petrol, not the 2800 diesel we have in the Arabian Gulf. No one uses diesel because the petrol engine is much more active and faster than the diesel engine👍👍
Would love to have seen the older Amarok V6 258 in this test. Mine was an absolute rocket ship compared to all other trucks I have owned. Including my new Wildtrak Bi Turbo

I own the grs4 hilux. It drives very well on winding asphalt roads, while still being very capable offroad. Averaging 9.3l per 100kms in 7000 kms
you mean it drives very very slow. old man slow.
@mikeycassey8i rather pick that hilux than money eating ranger raptor lol 507
We average about 10.7L / 100km mixed driving
Awesome vid fellas! Iv personally got a gr hilux myself and bought it for the price difference, maintenance, diesel fuel and reliability. I’m not biased at all with cars love me a nice raptor just a bit out of the price range!
Trucks aren't intended for drag race, these trucks (Raptor and GR) are made for offroad hability, so this GR has reached it's goal...there is nothing toyota has to do in this truck.
Any way this GR held pretty well against those V6, it's just 4 cylinders(being a Toyota).
My thought
There is in fact a V6 Hilux GRS available now.
Try swapping drivers for second runs?
Great idea! Might try that for the next one.
@@CarExpertAusalso try with 4A Sport please. Toyota's fault for not having AWD. No need to handicap the Rangers
Love to see a range of tests between all the Toyota 4wd models… 79 series v prado v hilux v whatever
It would be great to see a old TRD V6 hilux vs these.
Would beat the diesels and the raptor would beat the TRD
It won't beat the v6 diesel my amarock beats them easily the Toyota v6 is a crap engine
@@JohnWinzil faster than a supercharged V6 TRD?
@@mightygood1 l haven't seen a supercharged Toyota v6 just the ordinary v6 some are tuned they are not very fast and have very bad fuel consumption
Low key carwow vibes and i’m all here for it
I have no problem racing any Toyota hilux any day of the week My old 2015 px2 5 cylinder ranger with 335000k on it is making 182 rear wheel kw on a safe tune and over 200+ kw at the motor with 33" mud tyres and it does it day in day out
😂😂😂you haven't even finished your line "good start" here he goes😂😂in the same sentence
That 10 speed in the Ford is crazy good
Before it overheats.
Strange idea that we need to compare the speed of utes. I thought they were about carrying / towing stuff.
We’ve already done those tests.
@@CarExpertAusDo one for Volkswagen Amarok 2.3 gasoline Vs Raptor V6. No one has done it or I’m missing something please?
sadly that's the hype for last few years.
I personally can't wait sportscar off road races :)
If utes have to be quick at launch - why my M5 can't do proper off road track??!
yeah but super fun, just for the hell of it :)
Next time include the triton in a drag race, I am not surprised the hilux struggled to beat any version of the ranger in a race
The guy driving the ranger also launched each ranger terribly, the bi turbo would have probably won if the driver was more experienced.
You really want to kill the Rolux?
I love watching your videos..
Watching all the way from PNG✌️
I've been waiting for this. Thank you @CarExpert.
🙌
Will we ever see v6 or maybe iforce max in the GRsport
Hope so!
Fat chance as the new Prado only getting the same 2.8 diesel 😢
Toyota needs to grow some balls and put the 3.5 TT V6 petrol from LC300 into next model Hilus to truly be worthy of a GR badge.
That would be a very compelling vehicle to take a look at if the suspension was as good as Raptor
The Raptor is known for its powerful engine and off-road capabilities
Did you press the power button makes it a hell of a lot more responsive
Think he forgot about that.
They should bring back the 3.0 turbo diesel engine and make it a twin turbo diesel on the hilux
B$
lol what a load of s***
It’s just sad that Toyota can’t keep up anymore 😂
Bullshit.. i have been hosing hiluxes everywhere for 10 months now and not once have I lost to a hilux even the petrol ones.
@user-vk4vd7vr5t Of course it is. I'd like to see, couldn't care less what you think 🤡
James looks like a Ranger driver😄
How is the livability and the upgraded feeling being in each cabin? I'm just wondering if Toyota has any kind of advantage whatsoever!
Unfortunately its just reliability and good resale value you get from yotas. Theyre boring cars but would get you from a-b without issues just slower.
The “only as good” comment can only be true if “good” is defined as the ability to win drag races - certainly there are bigger considerations when buying a double cab 4x4?
Did you have the power button on?
After seeing the issues with EV, my mind is moving more towards a ute. I don't care that much about the straight line speed but I care more about the carrying and pulling capacity. I don't know much about these utes but your website is putting the Ford in front. however I do know that you have had some mechanical issues with Ford. What is the latest thoughts on which brand to buy out of these but I guess all the Utes. What are they like for parts out of the major centres etc.
If you want reliability you can not beet Toyota.
@nurullah5845 Tell that to all the Toyota owners who had blocked DPF systems and faulty injectors. Toyota have become no better than the rest of them.
who is cross shopping an EV with a ute
@@jackcalow2430 My father did actually :D he was looking at ioniq 5 and tesla y and decided in the end that he wanted a ranger raptor, so he got one 😁
The Current GR Hilux is just an upgrade to the existing model. The new Hilux will definitely have something to complete
These are so pointless but I’m absolutely here for it! Haha
Can’t believe that hilux interior is the same thing since 2016
I am definitely buying the Ford Ranger Wildtrak 2.0D Bi-turbo
Never understood why people care about straight line performance of a dual cab ute. I care about what it can tow and do off road.
We’ve already done those videos.
Why not have straight line speed on top of everything else if you can?
Toyota meaning of “halo” is bush-wacker flares and pretty wheels.
Toyota knows their die-hard faithful will buy pretty much anything they pump out, even if it does defy logic.
💯💯💯💯
After driving the holiday for a month it really only has power between 2200 - 3500rpm definitely hates being revved. Tbh the 4 cylinder was nicer and even weirder the triton was the nicer engine (never thought I’d say that)
Hilux with all the design upgrades still looks tiny to the others
Like a skinny man who uses steroids. 😂😂😂😂
Reliability is the main concern when buying a 4x4.
Sad thing is the 4 cylinder ranger can be tuned for fairly cheap and ads slot more HP and torque.
The 4 cylinder is a toy and tuning it will just shorten its lifespan
This is a while back, but the Samoa Water Authority changed their fleet from the Hilux to the XLT Fords when they first came out. They found the Fords weren't as good off road and tended to get stuck. They went back to Hilux after that. Not sure if Ford have improved on this, but it sort of stuck with me, so not being a speed guy, I would go Hilux, having said that however, that Raptor looks really cool.
Do you run the hilux with the power button on and trans in s mode?
Yes to power mode - and it makes no difference. It’s a throttle calibration. When you go to 100% throttle it doesn’t matter if power mode is on or not. S mode also makes no difference - it just holds to a maximum gear.
Would be keen to see these drag races with Wright in back, and maybe trailer with weight in back. To see how well they do with weight
We did something similar recently in our mega Ute test. We used a trailer dyne and measured performance times from 0-100.
I love my Hilux, i didnt buy it to win a drag race. And it has heaps of grunt carrying a tonne of wood.
Exactly most of the ranger fan boys don't even have one.
Yes, luckily you didn't buy it for drag racing! It also won't carry a tonne of wood in GR Sport spec (payload is limited to 780kg, inc. driver). In fact it's so limited by GCM that you'll only be able to carry 80kg if you tow at 3500kg braked.
Fixed your diff yet Paul?
Next time you should try a v6 4 liter Hilux, petrol, not the 2800 diesel we have in the Arabian Gulf. No one uses diesel because the petrol engine is much more active and faster than the diesel engine👍👍
Something Toyota needs to start looking into. Bigger engines they are lacking compared to other companies
Both Ford and toyota offers a best package trucks than others with good performance reliability..beautiful trucks...raptor theme nice and tough...
Lakas bilis ng ford ranger raptor tlga 😊
Would love to have seen the older Amarok V6 258 in this test. Mine was an absolute rocket ship compared to all other trucks I have owned. Including my new Wildtrak Bi Turbo
Those 2.0s of Ford are maxed out. The 2.8 of the Toyota is detuned for longevity but it can tuned to match or even surpass the V6
Yeah chuck a turbocharged petrol in it for sure ! @Toyota
👌
The race we knew we didn’t need.
It Toyota actually widened the body instead of just slapping on wide fenders and put a powerful engine and upped their interior game hilux would sell like crazy
Need one with sr5 nd gr sport, also with wildtrack x
Toyota is renowed for it's Torque at stationary (or low gears) but never made much progress on speed/RPM.
But to be practical, these are farm utes not drag racing utes 😂 you don’t see these utes racing in paddocks 🤣 love the vid tho 👍🏽
im am on the road of buying a new 4wd, and i think its a toss up between the gr sports and the v6 wildtrak, love to see a comparison. cheers
The only thing hardcore about the Hilux is its sales figues
Would be very interested to see these tests with Sport mode enabled on the Diesel V6 & BiTDi. Sport mode disabled from the factory.
James you have to work on those reaction times buddy! Fun to watch comparo boys👍
Have this drag race in 10 years with the same trucks. Nothing will be there except the Hilux.
What a load of rubbish just like the gutless boring hilux 😂
