  • In this video, the StreamGeeks show you how to set up a DMX Joystick Lighting Controller. We unbox and setup the Chauvet Obey 70 used with the Intimidator Spot 255. Using DMX lighting control can be intimidating although it's really the only option for professional DJ and production event lighting.
The first tip we have for you is reading your light manual and locating the DMX Channel list. This is the first DMX controllable light that have used with a joystick controller and while I will say it's useable, the set up is difficult. It definitely does not work intuitively when you first plug it in.
In order to setup this DMX joystick we had to map the Pan and Tilt channels to the channels represented on our x/y joystick on the controller. By default, our Chauvet Intimidator uses DMX Channels 1 and 3 for Pan and Tilt. So we had to go into our Chauvet DJ Obey 70 and remap these channels to our x/y joystick. Once this was done the joystick does work but we lost precision compared to the sliders.
I would highly recommend labeling your lighting console to map out your DMX channels so you know where each one is. You can also setup scenes which are collections of lighting settings that can be recalled with the click of button. Another cool feature with these lighting control consoles is that you can issue lighting commands to multiple DMX controllable lights at the same time. At the bottom of our Obey 70 you can see that there are "fixture" buttons that allow us to select more than one at a time. So you can simply click on the lights that you want to control and perhaps change the color or dimming on all of them at the same time.
The final feature we review is called "Chases". Chases are essentially a collection of scenes that are triggered in a sequence. You can trigger these to go off by programming a chase to include multiple scenes and set the timing to go in the speed that you choose.

Either I missed something or this video was useless. You mentioned that it had to be done, but you did not mention or show how to do it. WTF? . . . Also, the audio was very frustrating. Her mic sounded fine, but his mic sounded as if the engineer adjusted it while "Her" mic was still "Hot". And, what was the point of the Video Clip? The guy's intro said he was going to "Show" how to do a couple things, and never showed them. Thumbs Down.

So, making sure I understand.. I have an Obey 70 and I have 4 Chauvet Intimidator Spot 150s. I assume the programming would be about the same. Anyway, so, faders 1 and 3 can be used to manually move the light fixture? I am fairly new to DMX. Thanks

Nice but you should mention that fader reassignment is buggy on this controller. If you change assignment for joystick, it's not possible to create scene with it ... bug that causes me to return this product.

Hey I am desperate here and i guess you might not be able to help but have a QTX DM-X12 light board with joy stick. I have been trying to assign the joy stick to a moving feature but going on what you said about another type of board and the instructions that came with the board i cannot get this to set. i really do not know what to do now. Are you able to answer or point me in the right direction where i can get an answer? Thanks

I appreciate the overview, but your subject line is misleading. You say you can "setup" the joystick, but don't show how..

you point out the issue but then completely leave out how to fix it.

In writing we want to capture the reader - you do that when you describe a scene by showing - not telling what is going on. You told us what needed to be done, but failed to show us anything except what the final results were for your setup. I was anticipating seeing how it was accomplished ... poor video because of that fact ( you did say early on you would show).

Watch andrew mutgahs video called dot 2 for £50 because pc software is so much better and often cheaper as you csn use a midi controller as a lighting desk

Looks like we picked up our controllers about the same time, I'm figuring this out pretty quickly. Looks like in your case, the X-axis is on fader channels 1 and 3, y-axis is on 2 and 4, speed is 5 and the rest are effects.
Channel 11 looks cool with the auto-macros. Maybe since you have 4 lights, something cool to try would be to reverse the operation of every other light. I know in the manual it tells you how to reverse the operations of the faders, that would look pretty wicked.
