2 Years into my RUclips channel and finally it all makes so much sense. Why couldn't everyone else make it so clear? Thanks Scott!!
been watching a ton on DMX lighting stuff and a lot of reading, but your video just really nailed down the most important stuff in under 20 minutes. Thank you!
Glad to hear it!
Hands down the best beginners guide I've come across 👍
Glad you think so! 🤘
Def had that "aha" moment, this is the video that RUclips suggested when I searched for "dmx for idiots" super clear instructions. Voice isn't annoying, didnt say "uhm" 132 times, 10/10 would recommend.
Hahaha glad you found it useful. I hate RUclips videos that do that… I even edit out my breaths a lot of the time
Great job Scott! I've been a professional musician since 1982, but only now getting into lights. (I've always had people for that. LOL)
This video is well done and you explain how to set up DMX in a simple to understand way.
Thank you so much!
Thank you!
So helpful! THANK YOU!
really helpful, thank you very much Scott!
Great video thank you for the info
very helpful!
I clicked on this video thinking I would learn enough info to be satisfied and say I know what dmx is but you just told me what I wanted to do when I learned what dmx was. Thxs
Liked. Great info. diving deeper now…….
One million thanks !!!!
Awesome! Thank you!!!!🔥🔥🔥🔥
🤘🤘
Great video bro. Explained everything in a way I totally understood. Am subscribed. 😊
Thanks for the sub 🤘🤘
been looking for good guides on getting started with dmx, thank you!
Thanks! Glad it helped you out
Awesome video Scott. As a sound guy that has been plunged into the world of lights, your video has saved my life! I'm using a Mantra console and the manual just confused the heck out of me. Now I see the light!! 😅 Thank you so much 👍🎸
Glad it helped!
Fantastic Video!!
Thank you!
Great tutorial ❤
Thank you! 😊
Fantastic as usual. I’ll be implementing your knowledge in the near future and can hardly wait. Next will be using MIDI to do it all!
Thanks! Glad you liked the video 🤘
I love your channel. I've learnt so much about wireless; now DMX. Thank you 😊
Thanks!
Super Tnx
A really useful video (as are most of your videos). I've been scratching my head over DMX programming for a couple of years but now I think I'll be able to crack it.
It takes a little while, but it’s definitely easier the more you do it 🤘
I have watched so many videos about basic dmx. This is the one easy to understand
Glad to hear that! Thanks!
Thank you for this video. I have been watching many different videos on the subject of DMX lighting with glazed eyes, and while watching yours I just had my aha moment. Great video.
Glad it was helpful!
Doing God's work. thank you!
Lol I like how you let everyone know that hitting the like is a free way to support your video... That was 🔥. I'm definitely smashing the like button keep spreading the knowledge man👏👏👏
Haha thanks man! I had to think of someway to ask but make it different since everyone on RUclips does it 😂
Good to know what to do if this unit loses power as this is the one I have. Great info as always!
Jesus, your audio is so good
Thank you 🙏
I started Djing this year in Jan at a local club that just opened.
They had all the lights, all the clamps, bars, stands.
However the gentlemen that owned these, did not know how to operate DMX.
Insert me haha, an extremely dilligent musician that always tries to find creative ways to get the best out of anything ;)
Thanks for the tips here. Really expands my perspectives and helps mitigate questions.
Glad to help! 🤘
Great video. Very informational. You got a great presence and ease of understanding you and basically the simplicity of explaining it all . Thank you for that. I will watch this video several times and work on my programming of lights..
I have two 4 can chauvet led lights ..and was wondering is there any particular DMX CONTROL PANELthat you would recommend to using and controlling both sets of lights ? Thank you in advance for any insight on that .☘️👍
Thanks! Glad it was helpful. And I don’t really have any gear recommendations for controlling them. I usually do it digitally. But I have an ADJ controller I use in this video that I do like: ruclips.net/video/3Xm7Rep90Is/видео.htmlsi=qSd2A_VjERO66-qG
the gifs in this video are so funny please never stop editing like this you're hilarious thank you
also very helpful thanks 👍
Come for the tech, stay for the gifs! 😊
Funny I have those exact Chauvet, awesome little PAR
Yup! These things are awesome. I use them for stage lights, ambient lights, as well as the lights behind me while I’m filming my RUclips videos now. Super useful 🤘
funny how familiar faces appear... :) - ive got a hand full of LED before they are branded, had a buddy get me some from warehouse before they hit stores if that makes sense, so super affordable, but does the job. Also picked up a LED bar on black friday here last year, game changer that! All the best man!
Oh nice, you know Alec too 🤘
Hey Scott, great video as always!
Quick question:
Would you recommend doing something like this if you didn't own the lights? Like for example if I wanted to program a venue's lights (in my hometown) to run on midi from my laptop. Assume that I could access all the lights and set them up to the channels I want... What would happen if I then wanted to give the access back to the venues lighting controller for the other bands to have a "standard" lightshow that same night (after our set) ?
Would I have to reset all the channels on the lights, or?
Like I said, the question is "WOULD it even be a good idea"? I would really like to try and make a show with midi programmed lights in my hometown without buying lights for my band.
Thanks in advance!
Definitely better to have the lights, but I DID do that for a friends band though once. I didn’t have access to one of the lights so I had to just go from memory and visualize it as I programmed it. And it worked! And yes, lights would have to be rest from show to show to match your DMX addresses you programmed to 👍
Nice input editor with the memes 3:45 lol
6:44 man that made me lol
Come for the tech, stay for the memes 😊

Hi, great video! One question please...on a 4-channel setup, wouldn't one of them have to be the dimmer? Or am I already confused? Thank you!
It really depends on the light. Some might have RGB and then the 4th is the Master. It just depends on the light
Subbed
Thanks 🙏
Thanks for the video. I'm a total beginner but this made sense. Another question though. I have a lightbar with 4 lights on it. The bar has one display so I cannot set individual addresses for the lights, only 1 address. Can I still program the individual lights with different colours? How does that work?
Usually yes. It depends on the light though. You’ll have to check the manual to see what DMX addresses control which lights 👍
Thanks for the info! I was needing to save my DMX address in my lights to be on channel 1 for every light, so that when I turn the lights on I don’t have to manually change the channels every time…how do you do that?
Most lights should save the channel it was last set to. My lights all do that
Hey Scott!
Do you have any suggestions for a level up from these lights?
I have legit the exact same set up as you with the EZPAR 64. DMXIS, etc. But I feel like my lights seem dinky as hell on bigger stages and I can't find a solid resource on what the next level up from Slimpar or EZpar 64 is. Let me know if you know brother, thanks again for the video as always.
Yeah man these are for smaller stages or theaters for sure. Stuff by Elation is supposed to be really nice but they are definitely more expensive. Check out their stuff 🤘
The DMX vs XLR cable issue is the same problem with using 1/4 jacks made for guitars on a speaker. Sure it's not going to malfunction right off the bat but most people get into problems when they buy the cheapest cords they can. And cheap xlr can be OK for voices but the dmx signal needs a little more consistent signal which is why sometimes you start getting blinking lights
I’ve used xlr cables for a long time with them, but I know it’s recommended to use DMX cables when you can. Xlr if you don’t have them 👍
Hey Scott. Thank you for the step by step on programming. This helps tremendously being that I just purchased a $1,000.00 worth of Venue products from Guitar Center in Las Vegas Nevada and not a single employee knows how to set up this product. Their advice was to go on You Tube and learn how to set it up. That was a real shocker to hear. And here I am.
Still not too clear on the programming with the Venue Tetra Bar Linear Strip Wash Light with four color zones.
My question is Do I set up each bar separately as you did in the video? I have four bars. Or do I do that through the Venue Tetra Controller? Or does the controller simply just run what I preset into each bar?
Thank you for your help.
Art from Vegas
You’ll have to look into the manual on how your lights respond to DMX signal. If you want multiple lights to react the SAME, then set them to the same starting address. If you want them to act differently, set them to a different starting address 👍
Hey man I’m kinda new to this audio thing I’m getting into being a dj I’m getting 2 Jbl party box 1000 can you make a video on them
very informative, but how did you interface the lights with the program/how do I? I have the budget to get some lighting but I'm not sure the best way to control them
Thanks! I used DMXIS…. But ANY lighting controller basically operates the same way
Hi Scott! Do you use the Stagetraxx 3 app to control DMX-lights? Can you please make a video on that?🙌🏻
Already did 😊 How to USE MIDI to Control Your DMX LIGHTING - Full Tutorial

Hi Scott. Newbie here. Do the wireless dmx adaptors work with any/every dmx controller or is there a specific feature the controller must have for the adaptor to work with it.
They work with any controller that would take 3pin DMX 👍
Hi, Scott. Great video. Very usefull. When I turn off my par led and turn on again, it doesn't keep the setup. For example, I put it on D017, turn off, turn on and it's on R255. So I have to setup again. It's annoying because sometimes the spot is fixed high on the stage. Do you know how to make the par led keep the last setup before be turned off?
Oh weird, mine usually does remember so I don’t know
@@ScottUhlMusic Thanks for the reply. I'll keep searching. Congrats for the great channel!
Great Video. Have you ever checked Aeon Raven DMX Blackbird PFX. I can use somehelp. The youtube channel no help.
That’s interesting, I’ve never seen that before, just looked it up
Scott do you have any recommendations on a lighting vst now that you can't get dmxis?
Not yet no. I’m liking LightKey but I hate that it’s a subscription model
@@ScottUhlMusic Yeah it looks pretty user friendly, but I agree I just can't do subscription based stuff, unless it's RUclips haha. I am looking into Lighting Buddy or Stage Buddy whatever it's called now. It's made by enntec/dmxis
You mentioned the wireless dongles. Is there any danger of interference with guitars wireless systems on stage or Wifi connections?
I haven’t had any problems with them and they have been very reliable 👍
What app would I use w the plug-in Bluetooth accessory you show as replacing g the DMX cables?
It’s not Bluetooth, it just replaces cables. I do it with Dmxis. But these dongles just replace cables. They are not Bluetooth
Hey I’ve seen that the DMXIS by Enttec that was shown 2:00 is no longer being produced, what alternatives do you recommend?
I know, it’s a shame for sure. I need to find another one. enttec switched to a subscription model which is insanely annoying so I’m looking into other options.
Thanks for your video. I'm a newbie. What do I do with all those other menu items on my fixture? I have a wash light, that when I lose connection to my DMX software, starts strobing green. Very annoying when it happens in the middle of our worship service and our preacher looks like a green monster. I want it to be off, or at least remain where I have it set, if I lose connection. Thanks for any help.
You will have to look into the manual to see what each light does 👍
have you ever used sound switch
I have not, I’ll have to look into it
Have you tried midi out to dmx In? Thanks
Midi out to DMX in? That would not work, you’ll need some sort of interface or controller
I have a DMX512 controller, and N-GEAR spotlights. When I set it to D1, It just flashes instead of red, blue, green and that.. Any idea?
If probably has different modes. You’ll have to look into your manual and see what setting needs to be flipped 👍
What was the PC software you used again??
DMXIS. It’s discontinued now but it’s by Entecc and they have other ones now
how do you acquire the DMX/s software and hardware?
DMXIS itself was discontinued unfortunately
@@ScottUhlMusic any recommendations on a similar product? I love how simple the software interface looks as a physical controller somewhat scares me as a beginner
What would be the best way way to trigger a light to be a silent metronome on stage that the whole band can see? Not the whole song, just for four or so measure to nail the count in
That’s interesting…. I wouldn’t know the best way to do that.
can you write scripts for say a pyro musical where i hit one button and it runs a script for roughly 20 mins
That I don’t know
What is the controller you are using ?
I mention that in the video. It’s Dmxis and it’s discontinued
How do you do it so that the first channel controls the intensity (fader), and NOT color. That is a standard set up as in other beginner vids.
It all depends on how the light is setup. Most lights I’ve used have the master fader at the end
Is there a way to send DMX commands over midi?
You’ll need a DMX controller that accepts midi (many do)… working on figuring this out myself in order to do a video on it
Which DMX Controller/software is that?
Dmxis. Sadly it’s discontinued
can someone please tell me can you inter mix brands, like, getting a slimpar 64 to work with a eyourlife in slave mode? thanks
Yes you absolutely can inter mix brands with DMX commands, but not with slave mode. Slave is for similar units, but you can daisy chain DMX cables to any mix of brands 👍
@@ScottUhlMusic THANK YOU SO MUCH FOR RESPONDING. i am new at this . im using an obey 40 to try and make a slim par 64 and a eyourlife par 54 work the same way. the problem is, slider 1 is red for the par 64 but not for the eyourlife54. slider 5 makes it red. so im sending conflicting info to both lights . what am i doing wrong??
You’ll need to set your starting address so they sync up and/or use scenes to make “all red.” Lights can be tricky
RIP DMX the rapper
Rip 👍
this video by the way.... as sparked an idea, since i'm already running backtracks with midi time code.... mmmmmmmmm......
Nice! Yeah you can do a whole lot if you are already using midi and backing tracks 🤘
I think your friend Mike thought I was laughing at him on your comment where you said "uh oh... Mike it here... prepare to answer questions." He just said "I won't be laughed at. unsubscribed." and deleted his comment. :/ If you see him again, can you let him know I was laughing at your comment? Not at him. Thanks
@@ScottUhlMusic yea I just saw that. I was joking as well. We've spoken for almost a year now thought he knew my sense of humour.
Yeah, RUclips’s comment section is structured weird sometimes, so it can be confusing. I left a comment saying I was responding to you, not him.
I still can't program my startec spot
Does it have DMX?
What if the light doesn't have a DMX input or output? Like I have an LED bar that doesn't for example.
Then you cannot control that light with DMX unfortunately
You could use a Chauvet DMX-4 controller to give you DMX addressable power outlets. Check it out.
Oh ok so if I need 4 lights all doing the same thing just set them on the same channel
Yup 👍
how programmini DMX 54 controller to work with mini LED spot GOBO lights.
Amazon. specifications
Dmx Controller 54 Channel Dmx Light Controller for Dj Lights, Small Dmx Controllers Mini Dmx 512 Controller for Led Lights, Dmx512 Lighting Controller Dmx Control Board for Stage Lights Dmx Console.
You’re doing a good job explaining but it’s not the same programming unit that I’m using so it’s hard to follow what settings need to be done .
Some DMX lights can be a little different, but the general idea is still the same that I go over in the video
