Love the way you clean the cables very professional and clean looking. Also like to thank you for all your tutorial videos.
Thanks for the kind words- I use velcro tape to keep my cables neatly organized- I don't like having loose wires hanging down from above lol!

Great tutorial, I found this easy to understand as took it slow, I understand bit about DMX but fully as usually do these on sound activation mode with remote controller, which I find easier
mini moving heads are better as pair. I know I have one 1 at moment but I plan have another, great work and enjoy the light show..
Thanks for your kind words. Glad this was helpful and good luck programming your 2nd moving head- I love watching 2 (or more) move together!

Steve i bought some fixtures and a dmx desk just like the ones you have reading the manual is head scratching but you make it great to follow . Im a sound man but lighting i have always loved.
Hi Radio North! I agree that sometimes the manuals can be pretty difficult to decipher. Glad the videos are helpful and really appreciate you watching!

Really appreciate you watching!
Mr. Steve, Thank You so much for your tutorial videos. I'm a seasoned DJ that has started to switch alot of his analog lighting. I have purchased more Chauvet lighting and you are a big help! Could you do a video on the Chauvet Obey 10? That is the control I have and with this video I'm going to try programing my Chauvet moving heads next!
Appreciate the kind words and thanks for your suggestion. A lot of people have asked for videos on the different variations of the Obey 40, (3,4,6,10,70, wireless, etc.) so I will definitely consider that. Good luck with your light shows!
thank you Steve!!!
Appreciate you watching!
Thanks Steve !
Appreciate you watching!
Well done! As a sound guy trying to learn lighting, you explained DMX in a way I could understand!
Glad to hear it was helpful and really appreciate you watching!
You my friend, are a life saver. I have those same lights. My dmx is by Rockville. Thanks again
Thanks Juan- Glad it was helpful and appreciate you watching
Great videos. I've just got myself a controller and an 8x LED rotating beam. just playing really, but it's really interesting. Will sub and keep watching and learning from you. thanks!
Appreciate you watching and good luck with the rotating beam!
That's very cool. 👍
Thanks for watching!
Excellent.

Thanks a bunch
Thanks for watching!
I needed this. This is my first time dealing with lights I bought 4 moving heads lights (new) with no instructions
Glad it helped! Here's another video showing different ways to program a set of 4 lights: ruclips.net/video/VVUMbJLnQLQ/видео.html
Thanks great video I have 8 mini rgbw running whit same controller looks great
Cool. I'll bet 8 of them look really great running together. They are amazingly bright for how small they are. Thanks for watching...
Thanks Steve. Subbed
Thanks for watching
cool! im looking to do this for a small stage!
Tomtop just got more of these in their US warehouse (link below)
I've been really happy with how bright they are (especially 4 of them!)
Good luck with your setup and would love to see a video if you have a chance once they are up and running...
Nice video. You could invert the pan and tilt on two of them to have a more interesting symmetrical look, without the need to program two separate fixtures.
Exactly right (someone else made a similar comment) Appreciate your advice and thanks for watching.
Oh interesting! I was wondering about this 👍
I absolutely love these videos. You do the best job on RUclips explaining DMX lighting. Thank you.
Thanks so much for the kind words! I really appreciate you watching.
First of all TRULY thanks for the video but overall giving the time to respond every question! You defenitely love what you do. After reading all the questions I would like to ask you if there is any possibility to change the scenes in a very slower & smooth time in order to change from color to color very slow?
Thanks for the kind words! Yes, if you set up a chase with the Obey 40, you can set both the "Speed Time" (which determines how long each scene in the chase will last), and the "Fade Time" which will determine how long it takes to transition between scenes. So if you set set both of these to longer times, your scenes should change slowly and smoothly. Appreciate you watching!
Excellent tutorial though thanks
Appreciate you watching
Thank you
You're welcome-- and thanks for watching!
Thank you very much for the tutorial Mr. Steve. I have an LM70S that I use to do voice and guitar shows, but it doesn't turn on the light fan, only the one underneath, would you know if that's the case? Hugs from Brazil!
Thank you so much for this tutorial, the best tutorial so far from hundreds here on RUclips, well detailed!!! I purchased the Chauvet dmx 70 last night so l will follow your steps to programing it... Are you a dj?
Thanks so much for your kind words! I'm not a DJ (I'm a musician) but I've helped a few DJ's with their lights through the years.
Great steve
Thanks for watching this one!
Thank you kind Sir..
Thanks for watching!
THANKS SO MUCH FOR THE LECTURE, PLS CAN I USE D DMX FOR BOTH BEAM LIGHT AND PAR LIGHT AT THE SAME TIME CONNECTED TOGETHER
Yes you can- just daisychain the dmx out from one of the lights to the dmx in of the other light and make sure they are set to their own unique dmx starting address.
Ive been working with a crew that sets up lights and speakers for preformances on and off for about 2 years now, and it took so long to learn even the most basic of skills from them . Some employers just want to hoard their knowledge and keep you as useless to the company as possible. Its quite strange to experience to be honest. This explained enough so that i can hopefully progress at work as well( becuse i still do find it fun, and i have much free time, and flexible hours , so its not the worst thing in the world)
I'm glad this helped explain a few things and appreciate you taking the time to watch!
Very helpful, Steve. I appreciate the straightforward instructions. Keep them coming.
Thanks, will do!
Great video. Thank!!!
It’s important to point out that you have to set the light to how many channels you want use. There is a setting for that.
Thanks for that reminder and appreciate you watching!
hi can u tell me how to setup with dmx laser and moving head lights together tnx
Thank you!!!!!!
Thanks for watching!
Thanks
Appreciate you watching!
I was buy 2 and so far, I'm learning how to control manually because i don't have dmx controller yet
You will be able to do a lot more with these when you get your DMX controller.
Love these Vids, keep up the good work ... clear & concise
Is there a time limit on any SCENE you program ?
Thanks for the encouraging words! With regards to the Obey 40 controller, if you are manually selecting scenes they will stay active until you select the next scene. If you are running a chase, you can program it so a scene will stay active for a maximum of 10 minutes. Hope that makes sense and appreciate you watching!
LearnLizard also I’m getting some moving head gobos. if you have any please can you do a tutorial or something on them? Thanks
Hi - Well thats a coincidence because I just got these moving head gobo's: bit.ly/3bUfEY5 I'll be demonstrating them in one of my next videos. Thanks for the suggestion and hope you stay tuned :)
Thank you Steve for sharing and spreading the knowledge 🙏 2 questions
FIRST- How many fixtures can be add to each chanel, is there any limitations?
Second- How can mirror two fixtures. Means if the first one moving to center from left the 4 one moving to the center from the right.
Hi and thanks for the encouraging words!
To the best of my knowledge the only limit to the number of fixtures you could place on the same channel would be how many DMX cables you have LOL!
To "mirror" one of these mini moving heads you would go to the menu controls and then "PAn>rPAn" to reverse the Pan (on just one of the 2 lights) or "tiL>rtiL" to reverse the Tilt. (or you could reverse or invert both the Pan and Tilt together) Hope that helps and thanks for watching!
It look like it can show many other colours too!
Can be use for a small venue
Yes- you can mix red, green, and blue LED's to create lots of different colors by adding together different percentages of each.
Thanks for explaining it so clearly! I've got a bit of an odd question though. I'm thinking of designing a sunreflector, also called a heliostat, and though of a moving head as a base / motor for the mirror. Would it be possible to program a moving head in a way so that it makes only one half rotation in a full day?
Hi- that’s definitely an odd one. 😊 Although it’s probably possible to program some kind of simple Chase with 2 scenes and an extremely long transition time, I’m not sure if the mechanics of the fixture would be suited for that use. The motors and gearing are designed for quick movements. If you are able to create something that works I’d love to hear about it- good luck!
Awesome
Thanks!
Thanks for the Video... Is there a setting that changes it if the lights are on the floor instead of being hanging upside down??
There is a setting that inverts the menu display so it reads correctly when thy are right side up or upside down. Other than that they behave the same in either position. Appreciate you watching.
Hi I'm getting DMX for Christmas hopefully because I'm had a gobo moving head so I'm control it what ever I want.
That sounds cool- have fun! (and thanks for watching)
LearnLizard I had the led lighting but not the moving head kind just a regular spot led light but maybe also this or next year Christmas I might get another gobo color moving head that's the same like in the other video.
LearnLizard have you ever heard of realizzer?
Great video, thanks so much! Question about the controller: does each scene store settings for all eight fixtures? If I were to set eight lights to eight different positions/colors/intensities etc, would recalling each scene push the settings for that scene to each of the fixtures?
Yes - all the parameters for each fixture are stored to memory for every scene. And you can save 240 different scenes on the Obey 40!
@@LearnLizard Awesome, thanks so much!
Thanks for the great video! I just got some moving head lights, (Rockville rock on 7) and you broke this down greatly?
You mentioned it is possible to have the lights on separate channels and control/program each individually, but you didn’t recommend it. Do you have a video explaining how to do that, or are you able to explain why I shouldn’t.
I wanted to program some of the lights with scenes, but use the other as a controllable spot light. But if it’s easier I can just get a separate spot light
You can control your lights separately by giving them different starting addresses and choosing which one you want to adjust by choosing the fixture on the controller (You can watch my “Simple DMX: Part 2” video for help with that- but once you save a scene it will remember the look of all the fixtures.
Thanks very much for watching!
These videos are fantastic! Thank you so much for taking the time to put them together. I just discovered you this evening - I’d been daunted from getting into any of this because it seemed to complicated. You do a great job of break it down into simple, manageable bites. One question - once you’ve programmed a something (be it a scene, chase, bank), are the individual channel (probably the wrong term) no longer active? As in, if I slide them back to 0, will everything still behave as programmed? I’m assuming yes, but if you addressed that (thus far in the three videos I’ve watched so far) I missed it. Thanks again!
Thanks so much for the kind words! If you save a scene on the Obey 40 when you recall it, it sends the needed DMX messages to each Channel on the fixture. The faders on the controller will have no effect unless you put it back into "programming mode" Then you can continue to edit the scene and save again. I hope that helps and thanks for watching!
Thanks for all your videos, they really helped me get started with lighting my duo. I wanted to mention that I bought 4 of those moving heads you recommended, and one of them is defective. If I try to blend red into white I only get white then all red, nothing in the middle. I've been going back and forth with Tomtop support, they are not willing to replace it so far. Frustrating! So, beware!
Appreciate the info and thanks for the heads up. Sorry you are having a problem with your mover. I assume that you have gone into the menu controls and tried doing a factory reset? (this fixed an issue on I was having with one of my spider beam fixtures) Good luck and I really hope you are able to get it all sorted out.
@@LearnLizard Thanks for the tip, I will try that!
Going to come grab that rug cleaner and use it for the next day or two ifthat that's okay
What will happen if we connect this control panel into ETC DMX?
Hey Steve, Great video!
I have some moving head lights whose internal programs are better than anything I could do custom. Can the Chauvet Obey 40 just turn them on and off and let them do their thing, or would I have to use relay pack? Thanks so much!
Hi- Well it depends more on your lights than the controller. Some of my lights let you select auto, sound active, or "show" functions via a DMX channel which you can definitely do with the Obey 40. If you have to select them via menu controls (rather than DMX) then a DMX controller wouldn't help. Hope that makes sense and good luck with your shows!
Anybody have a troubleshooting site? i cannot get the DMX to control the light
I saw it well, and I would appreciate it if you could configure the DMX lighting to be used in a small place.
I like your idea a lot- I want to do a video all about making a small performance space look like a big stage. Appreciate the suggestion and thanks for watching!
Hiya, loved this video. What frame are you mounting the lights to?
Hi- I have them mounted to a truss very similar to this:
www.amazon.com/Audio-Light-Lighting-Portable-Section/dp/B00SS5QRQU
You can my whole setup more clearly in this video:
ruclips.net/video/6TU_2ViTXCQ/видео.html
Thanks for watching!
Great!!!
Thank you!
I know absolutely nothing about dmx so this was quite helpful, once you've programmed your scenes and activated a chase can you have that move in time with the music? I'm wanting to get some lights like this for a mobile dj setup. Thankyou
Yes- On the Obey 40 there is a function called "Music Chase Playback" First you press the "Music/Bank Copy" button. Then select the Chase you want to trigger with the music. You can use the Fade Time slider to adjust the time between scenes in the Chase. Hope that helps and thanks for watching!
Great video Thank you! Do you know if thats the only speed the lights move at? They seem a really slow. thanks.
Thanks for the kind words- You can completely control the Pan/Tilt Speed on Channel 5 (values 0-255) Appreciate you watching!
@@LearnLizard thank you!
Love your videos. Quick question: I am running two LEDs and one Flood all going to a chavet board. AFter every 20 minutes, my lights keep turning off. I have to hit my slider to turn it back on. I put a terminator at the end of my chain, but again-- like clockwork, every 20 minutes or so the lights keep cutting off. What would cause this? DO I need a DMX amplifier?
Hmm- I'm not sure whats going on. It doesn't sound like a termination issue to me.
Do you get the same result using just one light? Have you tried doing a reset command on the controller? My guess is that there is something strange programmed in the controller, (or possibly a fuse is tripping) I hope you get it figured out!
thanks for making videos again, especially these moving heads ones! Can u think about making videos on the Chauvet stage designer 50??
Appreciate you watching- would love to get my hands on a Stage Designer 50 to make a video- thanks for the suggestion!
I have a few questions if you could help me out: 1. Do you have to plug the light into an outlet or can you just used the DMX cable that's linked to the control board? 2. If you do need to plug it in to an outlet, do you have to plug multiple lights into an outlet if they're connected by DMX daisy chains or just the 1st one and the power will carry through?
Good question- unfortunately you have to plug every light into an outlet. The DMX cable transmits data but not power. Appreciate you watching...
Steve! Please can you tell me where you get your truss from or if there are any cheap ones that you recommend?
Hi- The truss is a Pro Audio DJ Portable Truss like this one:
www.amazon.com/Audio-Light-Lighting-Portable-Section/dp/B00SS5QRQU
and the stands are On-Stage Crank-Up stands similar to this:
www.amazon.com/Stage-LS7805QIK-Power-Crank-Up-Lighting/dp/B078YMMJG7/ref=sr_1_12?keywords=crank+up+light+stand&qid=1580580197&s=musical-instruments&sr=1-12
So far I've been happy with the whole setup. Appreciate you watching!
Hey Lizard,
What are the cheapest lights I could get because I’m a little kid that wants to do lighting when I’m older I wanna get practising now
Hi- You can buy this set of 2 PAR DMX lights for $28 with free delivery. Thats pretty cheap!
www.tomtop.com/p-i4742-eu.html
Thanks for watching - I hope you have a good career ahead as a lighting designer :)
i have 4 halo - which DMX controller should i get/for my fun church activity. thank you
As long as your lights can be controlled by DMX you can use any DMX controller. For the simplest solution, a hardware controller (like the Chauvet Obey 40) should meet your needs. Appreciate you watching!
Thanks so much for the videos ❤️ I really like your music. Is that a real Nord?
Thanks so much for the nice complement!
...and yes, its a Nord Electro 4D 61 :)
@@LearnLizard thank you for educating us. .I'm an electronic musician as well, trying to get a light rig together. I'd love to hear more of your music. I can tell you use real synths ,not just pre-recorded loops.
Thank you so much for this tutorial. Planning to buy moving heads and dmx 12 soon. My question is, after you save all the scenes and chases, will it stay after you unplug the dmx controller and the lights? Thanks and I appreciate the reply.
Thankfully yes, all the programmed chases and scenes stay in memory after the unit is powered down. Appreciate you watching!
@@LearnLizard Thank you sir for the quick reply!
Hello sir I have the same lights you have there. Can you also run the par lights as well together
Yes you can- here's a video where I show them running with my PAR 64's:
ruclips.net/video/6TU_2ViTXCQ/видео.html
Thanks for watching!
Nice tutorials, one question, on those lights ch 8 is xy speed mode, what does xy speed do?
When the XY speed is set to a high value the movements of the pan and tilt are fast. When it is set to lower values you get a very slow pan and/or tilt. Hope that helps and thanks for watching!
@@LearnLizard Love your videos, I watched all of them, and thank you it helps a lot, im new in lighting and bought the lights and controller to learn and actually I just figure it out last night, i was programinig the fader in step one and specting to change the speed when it goes to step 2, but nothing ever happened, drove me crazy for some days, and then i realized that the speed changes when it goes from another step into step one (where the speed is proggramed)!! but thanks again you are the only one that responded to my question.
by the way im having the same issue with sweetlight (show xpress) i created the fixture but xy speed doesnt change im confused, i tought my lights where not working properly since i had the same issue with both controller and programs but for now at least i figure it out on the controller.
Can you make half of them do the same thing but opposite from the other two
Yes - you can invert both the pan and the tilt in the menu settings on the half that you want to be opposite as ESC SLOVENIA mentioned. Thanks
When you put the controller in music mode, will all the lights move and react the same because they are connected?
Would this work with wireless dmx signal as well (donor dmx)?
Yep- as long as all the lights are set to the same DMX starting address and daisy chained together, they will move in unison to whatever command is sent to them. (doesn't matter what kind of controller you are using - hard wired, wireless, etc.)
Hi sir how to set a v shape light just like in miss universe when they announce the final two ?
To get that kind of effect you need a moving head that produces a narrow beam (as well as some haze in the air to see it) You can see a light effect like that at the end of this video: ruclips.net/video/_q0ZyGS0VWQ/видео.html
Thanks for watching!
You should make a patreon too! maybe if you get some money from there you can get a few new lights and show us some more stuff.
More videos to come soon- and maybe Patreon later this year. Thanks for suggesting!
Will it remember your scenes when the power is pulled out??
Yes- it keeps the scenes in memory
Where did you get the music from at the end at the smoke part?
I wrote that music (and all the music in my videos) I hope you like it!
Would you recommend the Cauvet Obey 40 over the Rockville ROCKFORCE 384 Channel Light/Fog DMX Lighting Controller + MIDI Control? The Rockville is about 50% more money.
Chauvet makes quality products and my Obey 40 has worked well for me for many many years. That said, the Rockforce 384 looks really cool and appears to have a few more functions that might make it easier to program- tough call :)
Hi, I’m new to dmx & I’ve got a coupe of pairs of moving heads like yours. I want mine to face the dance floor & not turn around blinding me. Is it a matter of simply having to program each scene & using the sliders to keep the pan & tilt facing forward?
Hi- You definitely could program each scene with the pan and tilt positioned how you want them. There is another parameter in the menu set up that lets you set maximum Pan angles (54, 36, 18) and Tilt angles (27, 18, 09) as well as well as a setting that lets you reverse the Pan and Tilt. Changing these could possibly keep them from pointing in your face without having to reprogram each scene. Hope that helps and thanks for watching.
Can you set the color without the DMX?
Nice tutorial man...i just bought 4 moving heads amd i want to use with dmx...will be able to program them?? Can a dmx include the standar feature of sound mode?
Hi- Almost all modern moving heads have DMX compatibility so you should definitely be able to program them to any look you want. Some lights let you access their sound active functions via DMX control and it makes a great way to turn that on via a DMX controller.
@@LearnLizard thanks man..can u recomend a cheap and easy to use dmx? I just want to make some standard programs for wedding and gigs
