    I just got it and albeit I am a still photographer primarily, I do appreciate your video. I feel there is nothing I would ad to this camera. Even though I like my xpro1 and xt1, this is definitely my camera for every day bases.

    I can say I certainly agree with the softness and the color of the video. I’ve used canon and currently using Sony however I’d like to see more of the Fuji when under different circumstances giving out more of its capabilities, still really nice results.

    Great video and lovely presentation style. Thank you.
    Just one thing though Seth, why do RUclips reviewers have an obsession with a flip out screen like Canon/Panasonic when for photographers especially and for non blogging videographers it is a hindrance, it makes things difficult, it’s too slow to use and it virtually doubles the width of the camera. You can’t use it discreetly, to utilise it it’s in then out, then in, then out... what a pain. The vary angle screen like on this is perfect.

    • @SethKHughes
      @SethKHughes  6 лет назад

      Thanks David for your comment. It's rare to hear this viewpoint, so I appreciate your feedback! Yes, it is mostly a RUclipsr/vlogger thing. Or anyone who wants to record themselves frequently on the go. A flip screen makes life so much easier when you can check your composition and exposure realtime without doing multiple takes trying to get your head in frame, in focus, etc. It's not a deal breaker for me because I'm not a huge vlogger, but on a hybrid camera with robust video features it would have been a nice feature.

  • @DavidSmith-dm2sr

    Interesting camera for sure. I've primarily been a freelance national news cameraman most of my career but have also used Canon DSLR cameras for my still work and some video. I'd still like to see built in ND filters and Zebra bars for exposure like I've been used to with broadcast video cameras. My experience with the Fujifilm X100 series has made me fall in love with Fuji though and has me interested in investing into the system more. Keep up the great work!

    • @SethKHughes
      @SethKHughes  6 лет назад

      Hi David, thanks for the comment. A lot of people convert to Fujifilm via the X100... It's the gateway drug! haha 😂Yes, there's a big difference between pro video cameras and dslrs. They each have their pros/cons so just depends on your preference. Personally I love using them because I can shoot high quality stills and the video capabilities are getting better everyday!

    • @DavidSmith-dm2sr
      @DavidSmith-dm2sr 6 лет назад

      Thanks for the response Seth. I do like the duel-purpose still/video usage of DSLR/Mirrorless cameras as well. I'm migrating out of the TV News business in the very near future and will be concentrating on my own content (both stills and video), so I think I see an investment into a larger Fujifilm system in my near future. Despite having a large investment in Canon glass, I'm just not that happy with their gear anymore. Fuji here I come!

    Great video Seth, how do you see the lowlight characteristics of the camera, how far can you raise the ISO values according to your experiences?

    • @SethKHughes
      @SethKHughes  6 лет назад

      Thank you. Low light performance is the same as with the X-T2 (and other X-Series cameras). Which is to say very good! I prefer staying below 3200 but here's an example of what it looks like at ISO 12,800. Grainy but it's a nice film grain aesthetic...

    Awesome video Seth. One of the best on the X-H1 I've seen and beautiful looking sample footage (and if the model is your girlfriend, nice catch man). Lovely to see the features you highlight supported by examples. Video is my thing and I've been waiting so long for Fuji to get in the game. The one thing that distracted me was the apparent low shutter angle ("stuttering frames") - if it was set at 180, sometimes I find that when high speed played back at normal speed, I have to increase the shutter angle a bit to compensate for the frame rate while keeping some natural motion blur.

    Seth, many thanks on your video first of all..
    Can you test how the camera behaves when recording video with the Power Booster attached and one battery reaches 0%? On the X-T2 the camera would stop the clip recording negating (at least for my use) the suposed extended time. Can you confirm it the X-H1 also stops recording if one battery goes flat?
    Many MANY thanks!

    Agree, best video introducing this new camera! Fuji should hire you. And I've just picked one up:) to replace xt2. Curious though, I'm looking to get the 35mm f1.4, and it looks great in your video. Although some people say it's noisy, or has newer firmware fixed that?

    • @SethKHughes
      @SethKHughes  6 лет назад

      Much appreciated. Thank you. The 35mm 1.4 is an amazing lens for clarity, sharpness and DOF, however the
      AF is indeed noisy and slow compared to the newer Fujinon lenses (i.e. XF35mmf/2). So it depends on your style of shooting. Since I was using it only in manual focus for this video it wasn't an issue.

    I shoot often at my church events that comprise stills and videos. I shot with the X-H1 during the Easter Holidays service over the weekend. I used the Movie Silent Control feature for video but I noted that the shutter speed, apertures, and ISO do not default to my video settings when I switched to the video mode. This is really troublesome and a waste of time as I had to change shutter speed, aperture and ISO each time I switch mode. Is there a way I can save the video and stills settings separately and not have to reset each time I switched between stills and video?

    • @SethKHughes
      @SethKHughes  6 лет назад

      That is bothersome, I agree. Currently there's no ability to save those exposure settings separately but that is a common complaint so I wouldn't be surprised if Fujifilm addressed it in a firmware update.

    Hello, a question I did not see yet (or did I miss it?) is about the batteries behavior (with the grip) in video mode. The reason I could not use my X-T2 + grip for video (events) is when one of the batteries would run out of juice the video would stop. It seems obvious to me that Fujifilm would have fixed that issue with X-H1 since it also focuses on video usability, but have they? When one battery runs out of juice while shooting video, does it switch to another battery without the video stopping? Thank you.

    Thanks! I do think they're on the right track. Even if the can go 4:2:2 10 bit 4k external only and 4k 60fps at 8 bit external only that would be great. I don't expect everything from the GH5 to show up in a FujiFilm camera internally the GH5 does have a smaller sensor after all, but external upgrades to keep the camera heat down would be great. As for the flippy screen thing. I actually think as Fuji keeps improving it's wireless to you phone interoperability checking focus from your hand will prove much more beneficial and make the flippy screen obsolete.

    On your focus test, I see a lot of rolling shutter, but realize you are on a tele focal length, which accentuates it. How do you find the rolling shutter of normal and normal-wide focal lengths? Better than the A6500 (some of the worst rolling shutter ever) in 4K? Equal to A7SII (probably not). Do you find that the rolling shutter is less severe in 2K or 1080p? Thanks for the video - looks great.

    • @SethKHughes
      @SethKHughes  6 лет назад +1

      Good eye. Yeah, I was noticing it too but mostly when I was whipping that 100-400 lens around. Which hopefully no one is going to shoot video like that. Haha. The effect was indeed less of an issue at wider focal lengths. I didn't see it all on the 35mm but I was being very steady as one should be. Sorry, I can't really compare to the Sonys as a frame of reference.

    13 Stops in video like black magic would be nice even if externally, as well as DNG format native(25-30fps photo at 2.5mp resolution without audio RAW which is possible in software), 120fps without processing(unsure if it could already), A new codec other than H.264 similar to XAVC, Sensor shift 50mp photo like Olympus, 10 bit... with a grain of salt(external), 15-stops in Photo( i wonder how many it has actually), Bluetooth audio output or remapping audio to the 2.5 remote jack, redesigned phone app that can change settings of camera on the phone(all settings similar to GH5 app), 2 additional modes to control how strong the IBIS is in video mode because it is to strong, and finally a new battery that is heavier but has 500 shots inside within the same size of the other one(it was done already with the S version). Thanks lol tell Billy!

    Big step forward. If the EU's 30 min record limit without charging a premium really is the cause of the limited shooting, i'd expect to see another version with even more cinema/video-centic features and unlimited record times out with the next sensor.. This is called the Hybrid after all. A fully Cine body for all the Cine lenses I feel are about to join the MK line, that has a fully articulating screen and a new processor for 10bit; one can dream

      I’m wondering if this lack of perfect smooth racking is due to Fuji lens motors. They just don’t seem as suited to video work as Canon/Sony or even Sigma lenses. I have the X-H1 and I was hoping for better. Maybe I just haven’t found the right lens for it. The A7Riii and native Sony glass focuses better so far.

    As a user of the X-T2 for for professional motorsports photography, the new X-H1 looks great, particularly for meeting the needs of what I refer to as "hard-core" working pros (PJs and sports shooters, war & documentary photographers and pro videographers.) Also, Seth, I think your review is one of the very best I've seen because it provides meaningful and informed *context* of why and in what ways the X-H1 will meet the needs of users like yourself (or myself for that matter, LOL!). I also hear that the leaf spring shutter, electronic first-curtain shutter and the 5-spring damping of the shutter assembly is a big win. Can you pls comment on that and also the EVF black out times when shooting stills in continous high-speed? For someone like me, who needs to shoot racing bikes and cars, especially when they are going by me very fast when I am very close to them, shutter responsiveness, smoothness of shutter actuation, and EVF shutter blackout times is a big deal. Thanks! -Stephen Scharf, Racing The LIght Photography (www.stephenscharf.com).

    • @SethKHughes
      @SethKHughes  6 лет назад +1

      That's great feedback. Thanks for your comment Stephen. The blackout time is very good! As an action shooter you will be super stoked with the new shutter curtain, EVF speed and shutter sensitivity improvements. I mostly covered the video capabilities but I should to mention that it is also an extremely impressive stills camera. The best Fujifilm has made! When I get my own model I will likely do another video about the stills performance.

      Thanks, Seth! Appreciate the information and looking forward to more of your real-world "use case" videos. I think I may arrange to rent one for my next motorsports event and compare it to my X-T2. Getting shots like the one shown can be challenging, even for the big boy DSLRs, because the riders/drivers are going past me so quickly, but I'm not going back to shooting pro Canon gear as it is just too big and heavy. photos.imageevent.com/puma_cat/fujixt2testimage/_DSF4220-2.jpg

    • @stephenscharf6293
      @stephenscharf6293 6 лет назад +2

      Thanks, Seth. Yes, it's some serious speed. I have to laugh when I see folks doing video reviews of various camera's high-speed continuous AF performance with kids playing or cars on the street going 25 mph, when I need to get something like this "over the shoulder" panning shot of a rider, where it appears you are looking right over the rider's shoulder into the cockpit. These kinds of shots really push a camera's AF acquisition, lock, and tracking abilities to the limit. I just took this shot on Tuesday. photos.imageevent.com/puma_cat/fujixt2testimage/Gerloff%20T10-3.jpg

    all being good, the skin tones etc. but the focus doesn't "shift nice and slow from foreground to background". there's noticeable jerkiness starting at 3:30 unacceptable for serious video work and even for advanced amateur standards it doesn't look too appealing, but again, apart from it, what I've seen in your video looks really good

    • @SethKHughes

      Thanks for your comment Dima. You raise a good point. It's clear that autofocus segment you're referring to could have been better and I'm catching a lot of flack for it. Haha. My intent was to illustrate the ability to slow down the focus transition but mainly what resulted with that older telephoto lens choice (100-400mm) and slow stepping speed was increased choppiness. Frankly, for shooting professional video with autofocus (i.e. weddings, etc) you will be much better off using a newer generation lens at a wider focal length and fine tuning the AF speed settings.

    my X-H1 is doing so bad at autofocusing its like a GH5. Ive messed around with a bunch of settings and cannot get it work it totally stalls out when focusing with an object close to it then panning over to something in the background it take 20+secs to focus that if it even does. And yes i have adjusted the tracking and speed setting and still nothing

      Interesting. Curious which AF mode? Also, are you having the same problem with a variety of lenses?

    • @MilosPaprica

      mostly area mode but multi does the same thing. I have the 23 F2 56 and 50-140 and all lenses have the same result But the 50-140 seem to do better but just tested it again anything near thats in focus and jumping to background takes forever to focus or it won't

      I think that happened to me a couple times in low light but it wasn't a huge problem like you're describing. I will let you know if I find anything out about it. I wouldn't fret though, the first gen firmware is likely to have a few kinks that will surely be smoothed out in upcoming firmware updates. In the meantime, be sure all of your lenses have the latest firmware also.

      I've seen this problem with slow focusing to background in some other videos too, I think Fuji definitely has some tweaking to do in the firmware. Same goes for IBIS in video mode, it still has some distracting shifts when moving around, hopefully they can tweak the algorithm to make it more smooth.

      Honestly I had focusing issues in video when I fired mine up and couldn’t figure out what the cause was. I reset my settings and that seemed to fix it? Bizarre but maybe worth a shot

    Hey Seth! I am in the process of creating F-Log LUTs for the Fuji lineup and need some good raw F-Log footage. Would you mind me using these clips perhaps? If so, please message me :) All creator footage used to test will be credited with links :)

    The AF in this test is absolutely unusable for profesional video shooting. Also the 120fps images look too soft. Were the images a bit out of focus or the 120fps mode mades it look like that?

    • @SethKHughes

      Honestly, I wouldn’t be using autofocus in this manner for professional shoots. That’s not what I was trying to convey. I was demonstrating low light autofocusing and the ability to slow down focus shifts. I agree that I could have executed it better. As for the over cranked footage, I had the in camera sharpness dialed all the down with no sharpening in post. And yes, since I was hand holding, in manual focus, at f/1.4, with movement... there is bound to be softness from that as well. You will notice some of it is indeed sharp though, which considering the circumstances I will consider a win!

      Thanks for answering. I consider important in a test to keep most variables under control, as no one is interested in judging the camera man skills but the possibilities of the camera. It is not the first video with soft slow motion from de X-H1 I saw, and I think is a problem of the camera. Would nice to know your point of view. Thanks.

    what i think its a good camera but over priced.... u can get a a7 III on that price range ... this camera cant compete on a7 III .. sony just killed it... only the 200mb bit rate is a plus on this fuji... when a7 III starts selling next month ..this camera will be @ $1499 below ...pretty sure about that

      They'd then better give the early adopters some cash back if they're going to do that, otherwise there'll be a lot of salty users out there.
