Long-time Fuji fan/user that has owned many of the bodies, including the X-M1. Agree 100% about needing/wanting an EVF - without that I may as well use my phone. Learned from the X-M1 and XF-10 that a VF is a must for me, and wish Fuji would circle back to small rangefinder-format models with an EVF. Bonus points if it also offered a bounce flash!
C-AF, C-AF, C-AF... when is Fuji going to get it right?! After 8 Fuji bodies up to two X-H1 and watching the C-AF performance of the X-H2s, I sold everything and switched to Sony full frame system. Still working on it?
I don't own any Fuji camera, but I agree that on paper, this looks to be a compelling option. If I didn't already own a couple of digital cameras and were looking at getting into digital photography (or videography), this would be high on my list. For me, the lack of IBIS or a viewfinder is not necessarily a deal killer. I do like viewfinders and find IBIS helpful in some situations, but don't really need either of them. Good for Fuji for creating this camera at this price point.
Thanks for the review! For overheating tests I think bitrate is a more important metric to consider or at least mention. As recording the same frame rate, but different bitrate affects the overheating a lot.
I was really considering the M5 but also wanted an EVF and IBIS. Ended up getting the X-S20. It’s not really that much bigger and checks all the boxes for me. LOVE that thing!
Hi Chris & Jordan. Happy Holidays. Thank you for the review on the xM-5. I would not be interested in this camera,(nor any camera without a EVF.) Looks like Chris is rocking the Trooper camera bag in this vehicle. I am a fan of Wotancraft camera bags/ backpacks. Safe travels.😊
New backgrounds (behind photo examples, like in AF test, and behind Chris) change the vibe a bit. Not sure if I like it better that way, but your new editing style didn't go unnoticed Jordan!
How do they keep failing at video autofocus? You can have the best video specifications in the world but if it goes blurry on autofocus, it's unusable 😵💫
I'm a Sony APS-C user, the X-M5 is what I wish the ZV-E10 II was. Small size, mechanical shutter for photos, $800. I love the original ZV-E10 but the 2nd gen with its increased price and loss of mechanical shutter makes it such a worse hybrid compared to the X-M5 and even the original ZV-E10.
I love my ZVE10 for photography & video, same sensor as the a6400, i've used it for professional shoots with a Small rig cage and nobody could tell the difference in terms of image quality. I'll probably pick up the Fuji XM5 because it's a good price, and i always wanted to try Fuji.
I'm a hobbyist so my a6700 and ZV-E10 G1 are more than enough for me for plenty of years! I tried a few Fuji cams and they def weren't for me, but I'm glad the X-M5 gives such good competition in this lower price range
A6700 is definitely a tier above, AF better than most full frames. I just wish they wouldn't hamper their APSC just so it doesn't directly compete with their full frame cameras... a6700 should have much faster silent shutter burst rates, for 4k60 it down samples from the whole sensor 6K, so clearly it can collect the image fast enough to do more than 11 frames per second. Also a 1024*768 view finder is just silly, and a 0.3Mp screen is a joke. It captures amazing images and video, but they really could have made the hardware nicer.
I think Canon is one that doesn't really care about competing with it's full frame cameras. While giving options for cheaper cameras. The R7 has over 30mp with sealed body two card slots Ibis ...ext. so it directly competes with the R6.
All the praise around the X-M5, justified. Yet there are M4/3 recent options, that have all what the X-M5 offers, minus film simulation. Yet people disregard / look down them because "BOKEH", "DEPTH OF FIELD", "HIGH ISO". Whereas if they knew M4/3 amazing IBIS + low ISO + slow shutter speed = noise problem solved. Go figure...
@@ElectronInc yep, that’ll be the E-P7 which this is trying to imitate. With the colour wheel it’s easy to dial in Positive and Negative film simulations and the Tri-X + grain simulation is just brilliant.
@@unn4medfeel1ng they're big for 2 reasons: 1 - people looked down on M4/3 and didn't buy the cameras such as gm1/gm5 because of the facts I shared above. 2 - which forced M4/3 brands to ditch small bodies because all the praise was for bigger bodies. M4/3 brands have had to focus on their strengths (video or wildlife), to the detriment of their initial core customers. Now people, boosted this type of media speech, want to go back to small bodies and bigger sensor camera brands claim they're innovating in this way, whilst they release this type of camera which doesn't even have, in 2024, an IBIS. Don't get me wrong, having multiple solutions is good. But what blows my mind is this hype for something that is called "GENIUS" where better solutions already existed yet disregarded...
Thanks for this! I bought an X-M1, used it for a year, and sold it due to the rear screen's maximum brightness being too dim for the camera to lack an EVF. I couldn't see to compose. In bright summer sunlight on the Columbia Plateau, it's a dim screen that cannot compete. Being able to shield the EVF screen from the sun with my face and an eyecup ended up being what I had to do. (Plus, a camera seems more stable with an EVF pressed to the face, which might be a consideration without IBIS) And I still miss the X-M1. I understand the desire, Chris. I really wish it could've been the camera for me. The X-M5 seems to be about the same. But I'll stick with my X-T20.
That's what I like about your channel as opposed to all the bought and sold sell outs that do reviews. You guys don't claim to be a great pro photographer in a particular genre. You give us the "No spin news". Thats a great little camera and somebody who is looking for something like that will have no trouble deciding after that evaluation
This is another wonderful video from our friends in Canada. I know the Sony a6700 is way above this price league, but from a photography standpoint, I'm wondering how that compares.
Lol, no. I was in the biz, Fuji creates too many SKUs, too many models. XMs sell very poorly, anybody who is still buying cameras wants the higher spec models. The bottom end of the market keeps eroding.
@@stuntmonkey00but those X-M were pre-X100V craze, now Fuji is much more popular so it wouldn't surprise me that the X-M5 sells like hot cakes. It is a very capable camera for the price.
@@stuntmonkey00lol I literally bought it as soon as it was announced. It’s a killer video machine in a tiny package. Got it delivered last week and it is perfect. But I would pay more for the metal body instead of plastic
I just did a quick test of my X-M5 AF while walking with it in Movie mode (not Vlog mode) and my results were way better than Jordan's. The camera was set on OIS + DIS. As long as my face was in the middle third of the frame it was locked on and smooth as silk. I was using Tracking Sensitivity on +4, Focus Area on Multi (not Tracking), and Eye Detect Auto. If I moved my head to the side, it would focus on the background, but smoothly reacquired my face as soon as I came back to the middle third of the frame. This is actually a good feature if we want to refer to something behind us (i.e. shooting a travelogue) where we talk to the camera then move off to the side of the frame so that the background item we were discussing, is now in focus. Chris & Jordan always seem to get worse AF results with Fujifilm cameras, than I do, which makes me wonder about their AF choices.
When they (finally) make the X-E5, we'll get the EVF. Maybe it'll get the 40mp sensor and IBIS as well. The XA/XM line has always been about no evf and make it as small as possible. The hard part here is they brought the least expensive model out first and will add the XE/Xpro versions later hopefully. This AF/processor is already in the XT5, X100vi and XH2 options. Personally I bought one, and it's a great pocket camera. I also have an XE body. Once we get an XE update I'll probably sell both of my bodies for that and have one body again. But the XM5's pint size sure is nice at times.
11:07 A6600 feels like a good comp. Is this like a forgotten camera? Especially since this has a dial that is taken away to use for film profiles the ergonomics can be competitively comparable.
Fuji owners: fix AF on flagships like X-T5 Fuji: here is a new camera for 800$ that focuses slightly better than any Fuji camera. Fuji owners: Oh, wow, it can fit in my pocket. Take my money !
sorry to be pedantic but x-t5 isn't considered a flagship (which is why it has gimped storage and evf etc compared to the x-h2). the x-h2 and x-h2s are their flagship cameras on the x series now, and they did release the firmware for those. I am not defending fuji because they're doing a terrible job overall, but they did at least try and "fix" their "flagship"/pro cameras first.
@polygoncoco it’s the one that people buy the most, and the xh models are very similar in specs, not better enough to be in a different category in my opinion.
I think a lot of people have wanted a nice compact option for a few years now, with most of the offering from the end of last decade being unobtainable or a scalpers market. My gear from 2019 is starting to die and it really is time that the big brands take a little break on the ultra featured giga hybrid and heavy pro cameras, to give us a pocketable version of the photo-first and video-first camera. I'd personally love to see a type 1" video-centric compact that has USB-C charging and good reach. The DJI pocket and action cams have the wide angle vlog market cornered, so hopefully something with a solid zoom is coming soon.
I pre-ordered but my retailer dropped the ball and can't give me a delivery date so I went back ten years and bought a Fujifilm X30 and I'll carry on with my X-M1 if I need a small interchangeable lens camera. The X30 has, 12mp (plenty for a photo content creator) tilt screen, EVF, hot shoe, inbuilt flash, manual zoom, OIS, mic port and HD video! It's well ahead of the X-M5 for a photo first person even at ten years old. I got a 'Like New' from MPB with 6 month warranty for £500, pricy but less than the X-M5.
I have an X30 and can attest that it is a wonderful camera. Good focus, sharp lense and surprisingly good in low light. When I want to go light/travel, I often take the X30 rather than my FF gear. It is definitely a keeper.
What a nice camera honestly. For me tough, I feel the same as you about the EVF, it is a no no for my aging eyes, if they only made a separate optional EFV that you could attach to the hot shoe, that would have been PERFECT.
Thanks for the video, very informative! For me a competitor for this camera is something like the Panasonic s9. The price difference isn’t that big, and you exchange the mechanical shutter for a superb IBIS and a full-frame sensor. I’d like to see it compared in practice with something like that.
i'm still using an x-t1, which also has no ibis, i don't really miss it (ofc you can't miss what you didn't have in the first place), but no efv? uff - that's a deal breaker for me. i like how it enables me to just see my picture and exclude the rest of my surrounding world.
A friend bought a cheap old used Sony camera without an EVF or any form of image stabilisation, so that some of his friends could each spend a month with it and he would collate the photographs for a portfolio. I had a lot of trouble with it because of the lack of an EVF, the image of the screen wasn't very bright and the camera wasn't stable when holding it away from my face. Quite a few of the photographs were blurred, especially in low light conditions.
Honestly the reason I am excited about it is pretty simple: it has 4k60p 10bit 422 for under $1500AUD, plus open gate, plus threads for a fan, plus no EVF, plus no ibis, plus a backwards facing mic port, which essentially means that this little camera is an incredible little sensor block for a highly riggable DIY cinema build. Like, you could easily use those back threads to attach a proper cooling chassis and make the whole camera completely rigid to a cineback-style body. Add good external pre-amps feeding into that mic jack, a PL or locking EF mount, a v-mount plate and a few other accessories and you have an absolute beast of a doco camera to take advantage of all the incredible S35 glass that's going for cheap because everyone wants full frame, with an excellent readout speed. Incredible deal.
As always, a very good review, thank you. I was thinking about getting it but decided against it now. I'm used to having an electronic viewfinder and I wouldn't want to be without it - in sunlight or when adjusting the zoom while shooting videos. I had the Sony ZV e1 for a weekend, in sunlight I couldn't see anything on the small display. I would have to put on my reading glasses but I wouldn't like that. And no ibis in it, not a good option for me as a videographer. So I decided to use my xhs2 even though it's bigger and heavier. Bought the Sigma 18-50 so a bit less heavy.
Thanks for the follow up video on this camera. I’d love to see a comparison with the X-M5, X100VI and X70. I own the last two and am tempted to replace them both with the X-M5.
Btw, have you noticed a trend on fuji decline? It continues m43 path: - smaller bodies crippled: no ibis, no evf or bad eyepoint, low res screen, not enough buttons, missing dial, no weather sealing and etc - bigger bodies are great, but too close in size and weight to FF territory where fuji af loose competition. - fuji lenses aren't small and light enough, sometimes they about the same size as FF glass even without equivalence. - 40 mp sensor seems to be peek resolution for crop, FF cameras not even yet adopted that density. - so the only advantage is more video capabilities but fuji AF struggles. And here we are on the route of m43
This is the Haukland jackets inner layer, which is a nice jacket in its own right. You can then get the haukland parka shell to go over it for extreme weather.
Its a Ricoh GRIII killer. I have just bougth X-M5 and bought the TT Artisans 27mm pancake lens as perfect combo. Fuji have a hit on their hands, this will be a future classic.
Hi Chris. Thanks for this review of the X-M5. I looked at it recently, and while it seemed like a solid build, the ergos just don't fit my needs since I often use long lenses. As a Nikon Z system landscape, product and wildlife photographer, I'm seeking a smaller "travel" camera. My main criteria are image sharpness at, say, 24mm and 50 or 80mm, robust design, light weight and portability. Was considering the Fuji X System, but now considering Sony, either the a7lV or the a7Rlll, with one or two of the G Master lenses. Would you recommend either of these cameras?
It's a preview of what the Fuji X-S30 will be like. Latest processor with an X-Trans 5 sensor (if they release an X-T6 with X-Trans 6 sensor in the same year), film sim dial, IBIS.
Am I from an alternate universe? Where I come from there is a camera called the Xt-50. It costs a lot more, but Chris, why wasn't this part of the conversation?

@@simonrockstream check out 8:06, pay close attention to the background. Do you see AF jittering?
The XS10 can be had for cheaper and has IBIS and an EVF. Same great sensor. Not as capable in video but good enough for most people.
Absolutely spot on with your review.
A camera that can make ordinary people love photography.
Without an evf and working AF?
@@SunGee-db3yp Yes. Without the pro-only EVF and idiot-proof AF 🤭
Chris, very cool office/man cave! Red Green would be very proud indeed! Possum Lodge inspired?😁
I was really considering the M5 but also wanted an EVF and IBIS. Ended up getting the X-S20. It’s not really that much bigger and checks all the boxes for me. LOVE that thing!
This is what ive been waiting for . For video
The Olympus E-P1 had ibis. This camera is almost competitive with my camera from June 2009.
A Micro 4/3, 12MP camera with a fixed LCD that can’t even shoot HD video. Sure bud, good one.
Great review
I really think that the X-S10 is still a great buy, specially refurbished or lightly used.
Indeed, have it, very speccy, I still like using it. Still for sale I think?
New backgrounds (behind photo examples, like in AF test, and behind Chris) change the vibe a bit. Not sure if I like it better that way, but your new editing style didn't go unnoticed Jordan!
Sounds like Chris would love a X-E5 (as would I).
That Westcott light was nice, but dude, the bookshelf is awesome!
jordans tache is ron jeremy levels of glorious!
Sony A6700 deserves a mention when you talk of higher price bracket options like Fuji XS20 and Canon R7
6700 smoked then all.
No it doesn’t. Sony makes the worst cameras on the market at any price point. I speak for all photographers
@@Princeton_Jamesno it doesn't 😂

How do they keep failing at video autofocus? You can have the best video specifications in the world but if it goes blurry on autofocus, it's unusable 😵💫

@SunGee-db3yp No kidding - I mean, I own Canon, Olympus, Sony, even a Pentax K-70. I really can't stand fanboi nonsense.
I’m glad Panasonic can stop being the punching bag for that LOL
@thatsreallyamoon Shocking how fast they turned it around. I actually prefer the video autofocus of the S5II over the A7IV.
By hiring incompetent software developer. I mean from X-T3 firmware 3 tracking to absolute mess. That's amazing in a sense
While you were auto focus testing Jordon , l thought wow what a great scene to photograph, black n white would look so goooooood!
I was in the same boat, sold my zve10 and wait for zve10 II. Turned out the mechanical shutter was removed 😂
This just makes me wish we had a successor to the Panasonic GM5 even more.
If it had their newer M4/3 sensor, with IBIS it would be such a winner.
@@ElectronInc new m4/3 cameras are quite big though especially compared to gm1/gm5
@@ElectronInc agree
@@ElectronInc yep, that’ll be the E-P7 which this is trying to imitate. With the colour wheel it’s easy to dial in Positive and Negative film simulations and the Tri-X + grain simulation is just brilliant.
@@unn4medfeel1ng they're big for 2 reasons:
1 - people looked down on M4/3 and didn't buy the cameras such as gm1/gm5 because of the facts I shared above.
(Plus, a camera seems more stable with an EVF pressed to the face, which might be a consideration without IBIS)
And I still miss the X-M1. I understand the desire, Chris. I really wish it could've been the camera for me. The X-M5 seems to be about the same. But I'll stick with my X-T20.
Bought it, love it
AF is so bad that Jordan became small and passed Chris by in a blue jacket
Terrible continuity. Jordan could at least have continued to run in a zig zag. They clearly did not storyboard this section 😉
I wanted to like this camera but for now I’m sticking with my X-E3. Hopefully a X-E5 is on the way.
That's what I like about your channel as opposed to all the bought and sold sell outs that do reviews. You guys don't claim to be a great pro photographer in a particular genre. You give us the "No spin news". Thats a great little camera and somebody who is looking for something like that will have no trouble deciding after that evaluation
Great video 😮!
love the intro, short but awesome
This is another wonderful video from our friends in Canada.
I know the Sony a6700 is way above this price league, but from a photography standpoint, I'm wondering how that compares.
One vote for Chris to do the running subject tracking test for the rest of winter.
+1
IBIS or not, Fuji has another hit on their hands. It's sold out everywhere in Canada.

Get a lumix GΧ80 that had IBIS before IBIS was a must haha!
What shoulder bag is that?? I just loved it
That is the new Wotancraft Salt and Pepper messenger bag. 10 litres.
@@niccollsvideo wow! I went to their store but didn't find it. LTHanks yo much. Love it!
That camera is at a higher price point.
Fuji owners: fix AF on flagships like X-T5
Fuji: here is a new camera for 800$ that focuses slightly better than any Fuji camera.
Fuji owners: Oh, wow, it can fit in my pocket. Take my money !

Meanwhile, edvard is demolishing the X-H2s' AF compared to the X-T3's.
sorry to be pedantic but x-t5 isn't considered a flagship (which is why it has gimped storage and evf etc compared to the x-h2). the x-h2 and x-h2s are their flagship cameras on the x series now, and they did release the firmware for those.
The DJI pocket and action cams have the wide angle vlog market cornered, so hopefully something with a solid zoom is coming soon.
waiting for the X-E5 now

Chris: "I need to bring the camera further away to see the viewfinder with my aging eyes"
Me: I feel seen...
Hey if I could focus on you, I’d see you!
The shutter on the X-M5 sounds much smoother than the one on the R10.
What a nice camera honestly. For me tough, I feel the same as you about the EVF, it is a no no for my aging eyes, if they only made a separate optional EFV that you could attach to the hot shoe, that would have been PERFECT.
I hav glasses and have never liked using a EVF since I had my first camcorder in the 90s... so this camera at that price is awesome!
So, when are you reviewing that new Wotancraft bag? :D
Fuji becoming a better videocamera than photography camera 🤔 I didn't think I would live long enough to see this 😅
This camera is like the fujifilm x80 that we have been waiting for a long time but never came out. The advantage is that the lens can be changed.
Wow
It ought to be , for it's price tag!
@jordan, the moustache works 😊
Thanks for the follow up video on this camera. I’d love to see a comparison with the X-M5, X100VI and X70. I own the last two and am tempted to replace them both with the X-M5.
Thank you for saying this. I need an evf (and diopter adjustment) to shoot. For this reason I can't take a decent picture on a cell phone.
Btw, have you noticed a trend on fuji decline? It continues m43 path:
- smaller bodies crippled: no ibis, no evf or bad eyepoint, low res screen, not enough buttons, missing dial, no weather sealing and etc
- bigger bodies are great, but too close in size and weight to FF territory where fuji af loose competition.
What coats are you guys wearing in the XM5 review?
This is the Haukland jackets inner layer, which is a nice jacket in its own right. You can then get the haukland parka shell to go over it for extreme weather.
I guess the challenge with the Fuji system is that when you wanna gro w to a full frame, you’ve gotta skip and go to medium format.
Its a Ricoh GRIII killer. I have just bougth X-M5 and bought the TT Artisans 27mm pancake lens as perfect combo. Fuji have a hit on their hands, this will be a future classic.
i couldn't help but make the same faces that jordan was making when you were reviewing the photos
I'd buy it if it had an EVF. Hoping for the x-e5 now~
Your eyes may be getting old but your hair is on point. Keep up the good work!
It's a preview of what the Fuji X-S30 will be like.
Latest processor with an X-Trans 5 sensor (if they release an X-T6 with X-Trans 6 sensor in the same year), film sim dial, IBIS.
would love to see more tests with digital ibis, how does it handle different scenarios with non ois lenses
Thanks for the video. Fuji is on the list of cameras for the collection. I'm not convinced this is the one. It looks stylish though.
Am I from an alternate universe? Where I come from there is a camera called the Xt-50. It costs a lot more, but Chris, why wasn't this part of the conversation?
I would love to have a comparison between XM5 and the "old" Panasonic GX9. What do you think ?
How does it compare with the LUMIX S9
Fujifilm should make an detachable EVF for it
