Riding motorcycles in Zambia in the end of the rainy season can be a bit sketchy

  • Unedited series: Marja from Denmark came to Zambia to rent a motorcycle and ride with me a few weeks. Obviously we wanted to go offroad, happily ignoring the fact, that rainy season in Zambia means roads can be badly damaged.
In this video, we are on the RD491 road south of Lusaka. It is also known as the old escarpment road, or the "mother" road.
This little video displays just one of the obstacles we met that day - things got a lot worse - but that will have to be for a full Sunday movie!
This video also shows what kind of working conditions Zambians work under, and what equipment they have. Safety gear mostly just include flip flops and the risk they take of being injured during work is enormous. These people are incredible at finding solutions to their problems - cause nobody will come and fix it for them!
TIA: This is Africa I guess!
After they managed to remove the truck, the struggle to get through started for us, and then we got a much bigger problem, that left us stranded on the other side with a broken motorcycle, but stat story is for a full episode! :D

I introduced my sister to your videos this afternoon and we watched your Sani Pass ascent. She's impressed with how you managed in difficult rocky wet conditions and also likes your personality and adventure story telling. I couldn't agree more.

OMG I would have never thought they could get that out of there without digging, moving rock. Be safe out there, Henriette! Thanks for this video!

I know, they did move a lot of rocks and pushed planks under the wheels but it took them a long time to get that poor truck out of there!

😳 That Cable, erm, pulling agglomeration of bits held more by willpower than strength of material!
I guess that's part of African magic: Anywhere else in the world, this construction would hav snapped an killed everybody in range. 😵‍💫

Yes, indeed. Everything was a bit too creative for my liking too! 🙈 But everyone was wearing their safety flip flops... so no worries...

It is the RD491 road from Lusaka down to Chiawa. Also called the old escarpment road or The Mother. I ride I would love to come back and do one day without luggage - and in the dry season for sure!
