Packing for a motorcycle adventure is a challenge. Here are 5 items I like to pack!

  • As a long-distance motorcycle traveler who likes to find remote roads and wild-camp in the middle of nowhere, I find myself constantly challenged on keeping my luggage light. Heavy luggage is just no fun when you venture off the beaten track, and the road is a bit more difficult.
    On the other hand, you need your camping gear to make it happen. Unlike shorter motorcycle trips from home, you can not optimise your luggage for each ride. When you are on a long-distance motorcycle adventure, you end up carrying clothes for all kinds of weather and stuff you will need along the way, spare-parts, paperwork, etc.
    On my first big trip from Alaska to Argentina, riding 40.000 km's through 15 countries, I realised how annoying it was to ride with a heavy load. It would really affect how much I enjoyed the ride. On my current trip, I ride solo, so far 82.000 km's through 40 countries. And now more than ever is keeping my luggage to a minimum important for me.
    Therefore, my usual advice is to get rid of stuff. But in this episode, I want to speak about 5 things that I am really happy to carry with me, either because I use it all the time or because they keep me safe.
    The safety items are important to me, as they make me comfortable going to remote places and wild-camping for a few days or go on that challenging route that scare me a little.
    Stay tuned to the end, where I add a 6th item. This was a strong recommendation from a very experiences traveller uwe Schmidt from South Africa. Thanks Uwe for this great advice.

    Hi Henriette. I am glad that, in your list of things you `cut off`, at the beginning of the video, you didn`t include your lovely hair. All good, useful items and I am glad I`m not the only one who carries an umbrella! On a light-hearted note, I think that the only thing I need to carry with me, is you 🤗❤

    The "string" is known as "Paracord", as it is the type of cord used in the manufacture of parachutes. It will have between 5 or 7 very strong inner strands, which can each be separated from the remainder.

    Haha, so funny; I was busy getting gear together over the weekend for a trip, and I picked up my own no6 thinking "hmm, I'd never consider this before, but maybe it could be useful..." And it went into exactly the same pocket at the back of my panniers 👌👏

      Liked your short and effective video! As traveling 2 up with @takemeeverywhere we carry waaaaay too much comfy materials, but quite all of them lighten up our journey! maybe one day we will be able to carry less stuff, every month we learn and head to a better "place and stuff" ratio😅. We love to have our kitchen pans that we use all the time (healthy light and durable), swiss multitool knife, waterproof bags for any kind of weather! ❤ Never thought about an umbrella, your arguments are conviencing though😉

    That was good advice, Hennie! 🤗

    • @ForTheLoveOfWheels
      @ForTheLoveOfWheels  Год назад +1

      Yeah. A shovel can come in handy in many situations 💩 I had a little plastic one at some point, but got rid of it. Have missed it a few times 🙈

      @@ForTheLoveOfWheels A nicely metal one may also help when you are stuck and have to fight with sticky soil!
      Oh, and some tools for light duty woodchuckery probably should be included. That knife you have there would probably prove to be a bit small. There are those small camping axes with wood saws in their handles, weighing around 1Kg. I have seen Noraly gets stuck a couple of times where there was loads of vegetation around to improvise an auxilliary small piece of path with, but she had no tools for that. Maybe a small machete or something would help.

    • @ForTheLoveOfWheels
      @ForTheLoveOfWheels  Год назад +1

      @Zweispur Mopped Yeah, I considered an ax and had a lightweight saw in the beginning, but it's just too much. 1 kg is crazy heavy btw.
      A shovel would be handy but it would have to be ultra lightweight.

    • @zweispurmopped
      @zweispurmopped Год назад

      @@ForTheLoveOfWheels Like with a car jack in your car and the fire extinguisher, I think the reliability of the tool is more important than the last gram it weighs. A good little steel shovel won't be much over 500 Gramms but would come with potential for surviving "application beyond its designed limits" a.k.a. abuse when needed. 1Kg for guerilla gardening equipment, 1-2Kg for pliers, wrenches, screwdrivers sounds like a fair deal to me, really.

    Funny you bringing an umbrella _ would not be an item on my list. Would use my tarp to shield me from sun/ rain. Wondering why you changed from Inreach to SPOT? One of them will be on my list when I venture into less developed countries.

      The Garmin is rechargeable, which seems very practical except I had to charge it every 4-5 days. In Morocco, the electricity fried two Garmin's. None of my other devices were fried charging in the same sockets.
      So, I gave up on Garmin and changed to SPOT that runs on good old batteries. I have to change them once a month approximately. And that's an issue in developing countries. I collect used batteries and give them to tourists who are flying home 😂
