Just watched an interview with you, you’re definitely a person I want to be when I grow up. Persona, life, attitude. Everything a human needs to be human. Always look at the bright side even if it’s not… but don’t be ignorant in the process. Congrats on your success and more👏
Great video, as always. I was in Hachinohe just last weekend and did a quick hike up Mt Hashikami. There was a sign that said the path is along that Michinoku trail, so I guess that was where it starts. The rock formations at the coast are pretty nice, maybe some day I will do some hiking there as well. It is, as you said, pretty remote and not so easy to get there for most people, unless you have a car I guess.
Gosh, thank you so much for this video and all the information. I'd already decided to make the effort to visit the Sanriku Coast, but this will definitely help me plan it better!
I spent a day hiking south from Hachinohe and returning by local train. It was one of the best days in Japan! Plus you can get to Hachinohe pretty quickly from Tokyo.
I hiked some parts of the Michinoku coastal trail in March. The scenery was beautiful and since the trees did not have any leaves yet, you could always see through the thick forest. 10/10 would recommend!
How marvelous to know all this! I wish I knew some dedicated hikers who could race to Japan to hike all of this wonderful area. This information is very useful to anyone who wants to visit. Summer must be truly delightful.
Summer is great, but can be hot in late July through August. Winter actually is a nice time to come as well - betters views of the ocean with no leaves on the trees!
I came here for the first time and came here from your interview as well. Then I realized one thing that “このチャンネルは日本人でも見る価値がある” simply I feel like that.👍👍👍 東北に行きたくなったw
I love coastal trails. My sense of orientation isn't great but with coastal trails you can't really get too lost as long as you keep the sea on the correct side. 😉 I walked a part of this trail starting at the Kabushima Shrine in Hachinohe and finshing in Taneichi, if I remember correctly. Can highly recommend even for beginners, since the JR train line runs parallel here, you can basically decide at any time to cut your walk short, hop on a train and return to Hachinohe.☺
I just discovered your channel and I'm really enjoying the stories you tell in the places you take us. I like your upfront and clever and eye-opening style. Thanks for what you're sharing ✨
Thanks for that! I have been thinking about doing some of this trail the next time I visit Japan, hopefully next year. I will be looking into a bunch of the info provided. Thanks!😎👍
I always think it's a charming idea to hike a trail with everything on your back and see the natural parts having hiked in from the built-up ones, but I can totally see how cherry picking the natural parts of the MCT would be very worthwhile, along with baggage forwarding if you hike as part of a longer trip in Japan! I could see myself doing this one day... And I would especially like to have an onsen bath at the end of every hiking day. Perfect 👌😁
Yes! And totally agree, there's nothing quite like a bath in an onsen after a long day walking! Of course carrying everything with you is perhaps preferable to purists, we only live this once, so just doing it however you can enjoy it most is also great!
wow, Congratulations to everyone involved. From your video and taking a look at the links, it seems well thought out and organized, an example for other places. Thank you so much for your hard work and for spreading the word.
Hi Quinlan, great to see another brilliant video so soon. It looks very well organised and I would imagine would make planning a visit a lot easier too. I’ve always been fascinated by people that through hike the long distance trails such the AT in the US for a well known example. I would definitely plan doing something like a 3-5 day visit and combine some of the other activities you showed too, it looks like you could spend countless days with what’s on offer. I also really admire you advertising that there are other English speaking guides available to hire their expertise from including yourself. I think that will really benefit spreading more awareness and knowledge of the trail to a wider audience. Thank you for sharing this excellent video with everyone, I really enjoyed it. Best wishes and also happy thanksgiving from England
So glad that you liked it! I'll actually be visiting the AT in the US next month with a delegation from the MCT. Sort of a learning trip to see how they are maintaining and promoting it, etc. I'll be the translator... I think a 3-5 day mix of hiking, kayaking, riding boats, etc. would be a great way to enjoy the trail (though of course just going nuts and walking it for several weeks also would be fun). Happy Thanksgiving!
Nice!! Before the official trail opened even! Funfun! Yeah- it's a vast area that I want to explore more of as well. I still have yet to hike the southern parts...
I hiked from Rikuzentakata to Ishinomaki. It was such a great experience. The scenery was second to none, and the locals were unbelievably friendly and helpful.
The coastal trails are great! There are options for if you don't want to do the intense stair experience. But it's also nice to just keep walking more and more every day to get used to it!
Once again Quinlan the drone footage ia on point. Everytime I see those coastlines I get the urge to get on the trail. One question. Is recreational fishing allowed along there or just commercial? It would be cool to catch dinner while hiking along.
Yeah, the coastlines definitely draw me in as well! The parts I showed in this video are part of the Sanriku Fukko National Park, so normally we can't fish there, though of course the commercial fisherman are allowed...
Awesome video! I'm genuinely really inspired to take this up now, was on the fence for the longest time. I'm considering this as a 1-day hike: start from Hachinohe and keep going South till my legs give out and then I take a train from the JR line running parallel to the trail to Miyako and call it a day. Do you think this makes sense?
I think the best One-day hike in this area is to try to start at Kitayamazaki lookout and go along the trail until Hotel Ragaso, then maybe try for Tanohata Station from where you can take the train!
Hello, I am looking into the Michinoku Coastal Trail and would like a video guide on how to get started buying the Hiking Passport, receiving stamps and town badges etc. and you seem to be the best person to do so. There is some great information on the websites but not really in video format. Thanks
Oh- that's an interesting idea for a video. I can tell off the top of my head that you can get the hiking passport at one of the centers in Hachinohe, Miyako, Nattori, or online! The stamps and such are located mostly at the visitor centers and roadside stations. I haven't paid too much attention to those, so I hadn't thought of making a video instruction guide to it, but next time I get out there I'll see what I can do!
wow this hike looks so interesting if I wanted to do the entire 2 month hike.. how would this hike work like would I hike little by little and there would be places to sleep by each day?? and how much would this cost to do the entire hike?
Great questions! There are definitely places to sleep each night. Sometimes campsites, often guest houses or hotels. In terms of the cost, I think it would probably cost a few thousand dollars including all the food, lodging, and such.
The Michinoku coastal trail sounds like a nice midlife crisis project. I've already earmarked the Shikoku 88 temple for that, though, and the midlife crisis is still a bit off, hopefully. So walking a section sounds like a nice interlude when checking out Tohoku.
@@GoNorthJapan hey I just came up with another question if it's cool to ask: to be honest when you mentioned in your interview about how the Japanese of the previous generations used to be more interested in foreign media. I remember this Japanese woman in New York City. She said she grew up with English music in Japan and not Japanese music like the youth today.

Agreed! That first section of the trail has such great access, highly recommended!
All your videos about the trail are interesting. I think anywhere in Tohoku or even further north in Hokkaido would be very interesting to explore.
So glad that you like them! Yeah, I really think so too in terms of Tohoku and Hokkaido!

❤ I could gush about it. The Miracle Pine, Sama fishing boats lit up at night in Kessenuma, the Sanriku Fukko National park. Absolutely glorious.
Quinlan's hair was not perfectly quiffed for a section of the video, still recovering from the shock! 😋
You should see me right now. Badly need a haircut. Should have time on Sunday...
