Thanks for doing this interview, Quinlan! It's always great to hear many different foreigners' experiences on how they came to be there long-term. And you did a wonderful job interviewing, too! Cheers!

Thanks Quinlan for raising that question about sexism in the Japanese work environment (...and Katy for not dodging it) 🙇‍♂

Of course! It's a well-known topic, seemed like an obvious question!

that was more interessting than I expected, not gonna lie XD I usually don't really care much for interviews but it was a fun and interessting to watch XD (you didn't seem stiff at all) in fact the conversation seemed very "natural" as far as interviews go you did well :D *pat pat* lol some very interessting questions too. I don't think I'd be super interessted in interviews on a regular basis but who knows? I enjoyed this one :)
PS: On a belated thought: You could also consider combining these interviews with unusued footage that you have. Remember how you tested it just having a video and thinking about underlying it with music or talking and stuff..you could use them for the interviews? It's also nice to see the person you are talking to especially during the introduction but i dunno maybe there is a line inbetween where you introduce and then zoom out onto a walk whilst the interview is running. Or maybe not at all, but I had the thought and wanted to chuck it your way XD

Really enjoyable and interesting video - I have huge admiration for people who create new lives for themselves in a new country. I also really like hearing about life in Japan from the vantage of point of people from other countries.
I really enjoyed your series of videos interviewing a Soto Zen priest and so as a future idea, I'd love for you to do an interview(s) with a local Shinto priest.

Oh, interviewing a Shinto priest would be really interesting!! I think there are a lot of misunderstandings about Shinto. Would be great to clear some common misconceptions up!

As Australian still in Australia I can confirm we more or less have free healthcare but it is being underfunded so not as good as it had been/could be. House prices are crazy high here too so potentially some positive trades offs in moving to Japan even if the career prospects aren’t as great. Having said that I’m only planning to visit again as a tourist.

How can I get in touch with her?

Awesome interview! I was wondering is there a certain process to becoming a "guide" i know you had mentioned completing a plant course in a previous video and was just wondering if there is some sort of training needed or offered to guides 😊

Depending on the type of guiding there are a number of different certifications that you can get! Both of us have the the Wilderness Medical Associates (Wilderness First Responder) and Nature Activity Experience Leader certifications, and I've also done an International Sake Sommelier one. But there's no one particular certification, and nothing national or technically required.

What do the tour options look like in the winter months for Katy? Recommended not to? dress appropriately (I'm from centre of Canada so I know the cold 😉)? If things go to plan I am going to try Jan-May in 2026 nomad visa stay and wanted to station myself somewhere North for the first bit.

She guides a lot on the MCT, which is a coastal trail, so you can do it all year long! Almost no snow on the Sanriku Coast during the winter!
