- Got sum questions because people didn't get when it'd make sense to draw faces with the loomis method and when not - so here's a quick tutorial-ish video on that.
The Loomis method is a practical approach to drawing faces! It's a step-by-step technique for drawing creating realistic portraits. It's making drawing faces easier for artists of all levels. These are the basics of the Loomis method and they can improve your portrait drawing skills.

Omg hi mario!!!! i love your vids! you tutorials have powered my entire art journey! I really appreciate the effort you put in your videos!
@@potioneddie6631 That's actually kinda creative
Hello Mars L! Really love your video, please a full totorial of this method. PLEASE-
how to draw a car
Andrew Loomis drew a variety of faces, including in his books. You are supposed to take the outline from the method and edit it to fit whatever face you want to draw.
Yes please make a full tut on loomis method. That would be cool.
As much as a full video will help people need to go read the actual book, it covers lots of things that dont get mentioned in videos like how to use the method to draw other head shaps, women and children
Hi, i know it seems random but Repent and believe the gospel, this could be your last chance to be saved, jesus loves you and God bless you ❤️!
@@jecaparaiso5477 jesus forever
Yes and also funny like this.
Yesss
You can still use the loomies method for anime/cartoons if you move the lines. I never knew everyone was doing the same measurements every time. No wonder y’all suffer from same face syndrome. Great video Mickey!
I agree. I do the same.
sir, his name is march
Hi, i know it seems random but Repent and believe the gospel, this could be your last chance to be saved, jesus loves you and God bless you ❤️!
Apparently no one has read the book since Loomis himself explains how to shift things around once he explains the basic proportions.
Yo! Same pfp
Anderw Loomis himself in his book "Drawing the head and hands" mention on page 36:
"Varaiety in spacing creates types
In order to create differences in type and character, we may decide not to follow the basic measurements or divisions to meticulously. By varying the proportions of the three divisions of the face, we come up with a good deal of variety in the resoults. There are thousands of possible combinations. It is fun to experiment with them."
So problem with Loomis method is not method but that most of people who use it or teach it use only most basic form of it. In his book Loomis describe many variants of this method, he describe separetly method for men, women, boy, girls and babies and for different types of heads and faces. I strongly reccomand everyone to read this book, it's avalable in digital form for free.
i think a lot of people don't read the book even youtube "teachers"
The problem with loomis is it’s too mechanical, too many steps, and too angular. A simpler, rounder method is better - something like Disney.
@@reginaldforthright805 It may seems complicated but for me it isn't, for me it is very helpful to keep correct proportions in different angles.
Thank you Mitochondria for this amazing tutorial 🙏🙏
He's the powerhouse of our cells
The funny thing is that Loomis explains this in his book as well if I remember correctly. Anyways cool video Malte and late JoJo is definitely one of the best looking manga out there for these reasons. Early JoJo not so much
True but godamn Araki's art evolution from part 7 onwards was just beautiful, either that or monthly releases actually allowing him to be able to draw like that
Araki is such a great artist II have read some of his parts in JoJo I really need to catch up but his drawings are so pretty and I think that is why I am so obsessed with drawing muscles 😂
Yeah he does explain it. Before Loomis even shows the method he shows a variety of face types. Then once he shows the method he writes how shifting the lines leads to a variety of shapes and expressions. No one reads the book apparently.
@@fofo-boi4509 yeah like why do they think every yt tutorials talk about all those books? They're really good and the vids should be supplimental
@@fofo-boi4509 it's because everyone watches digitally nowadays and every youtuber follows a portion of the loomis method. however, these youtubers leave out the important notion that you do need to adjust the guidelines accordingly
Pls make a full tutorial on this method . I would really appreciate it😀

Maxwell is such a nice guy, providing us with the possibility of a full loomis head tutorial!
Not only does Andrew Loomis' book "Heads & Hands" cover what you explained here, His book "Fun With A Pencil" also shows how to draw heads using irregular circles and ovals. (Though, more in an american-cartoon style). Andrew Loomis books are great, if you can follow them.
Thank you so much Marcus, Sometimes the loomis method doesn't loomis methods
Suppose that you were sitting down at this table. The napkins are in front of you, which napkin would you take? The one on your ‘left’? Or the one on your ‘right’? The one on your left side? Or the one on your right side? Usually you would take the one on your left side. That is ‘correct’ too. But in a larger sense on society, that is wrong. Perhaps I could even substitute ‘society’ with the ‘Universe’. The correct answer is that ‘It is determined by the one who takes his or her own napkin first.’ ...Yes? If the first one takes the napkin to their right, then there’s no choice but for others to also take the ‘right’ napkin. The same goes for the left. Everyone else will take the napkin to their left, because they have no other option. This is ‘society’... Who are the ones that determine the price of land first? There must have been someone who determined the value of money, first. The size of the rails on a train track? The magnitude of electricity? Laws and Regulations? Who was the first to determine these things? Did we all do it, because this is a Republic? Or was it Arbitrary? NO! The one who took the napkin first determined all of these things! The rules of this world are determined by that same principle of ‘right or left?’! In a Society like this table, a state of equilibrium, once one makes the first move, everyone must follow! In every era, this World has been operating by this napkin principle. And the one who ‘takes the napkin first’ must be someone who is respected by all. It’s not that anyone can fulfill this role... Those that are despotic or unworthy will be scorned. And those are the ‘losers’. In the case of this table, the ‘eldest’ or the ‘Master of the party’ will take the napkin first... Because everyone ‘respects’ those individuals.

The anatomy breakdown and tips were the most help out of any videos I've found so far. While other videos make the details overloaded with clutter.

I own the book of Andrew Loomis drawing heads and hands, and he plays with shapes and doesn't always stick with he measurements he even said it. Is actually a pretty good books that's helping to come back to art
Thanks for the tutorial marcel
Thanks for that amazing video Marco
as a beginner, it's exciting to learn some methods masters use when drawing/constructing faces and other human body parts. For me, the idea of knowing these methods is to understand the landmark and a base to measure the proportion. I really hope to see the full tutorial of this method! ^^

I love all of your tutorials, Monopoly
It’s not just that you can apply anime features, but once you understand how a head “is supposed to look”, you can also apply other stylistic techniques to it, without making it look like it’s been drawn by someone who doesn’t understand proportions.
"15 characters, one face" had me dying😂 once I realized it was true
great job Marcel, you have succeded again to let me know how to draw. especially heads.
A full tutorial on the loomis method would be AMAZING.
tbh i like how bridgeman suggests to draw the head. Just start with a square, attach some skull bits/face bits. I think what I use is an amalgamation of what i recently memorized from bridgman and an old and totally legit digital class from Scott Eaton. I find it much more specific and hence harder to get wrong than the loomis method, and I find memorizing the skull underneath helps tons!
the more you understand the anatomy underneath, the more you can morph the face around it, i suppose, whether you're shooting for something realistic or otherwise. Sameskull syndrome is many times worse than sameface syndrome! the skull is the foundation of the face!
It depends on how did you use Loomis method in a correct way (even anime or realistic). Just training and practice it as part of drawing exercise about Loomis method. Anyway it's very great explanation.
Thanks, Mario! Your videos really help me a lot
Yes I need a video with that method
Pretty awesome that you used Tom Cruise as your example❤ there's some layers to that✨
A tutorial for the loomis method as well as a method you would use for anime styles would be very cool.

Thanks, Marcel sir, India🇮🇳 loves your tutorial videos.... and please make more videos about facial proportions and how to adjust with background proportion....
While I don’t use the Loomis method myself, this is useful info. Thanks.
To me, the Loomis method is a starting point. The reference points it has can be shifted pretty easily and stuff like the jawline can be shaped differently.
Please make the lomis method video so even if it’s not up someone’s alley they might get something from it that might help their art

Well you can always use the Loomis method as a template and use the realistic proportions of the portrait to draw. Including marking out the asymmetrical features beforehand.
Thank you muscle you're the reason I got into sketching
"BESIDES maybe Tom cruse "
Shit had me rolling 🤣🤣
actually, i personally use loomis also for different proportions. The way i use it, basically, is to use loomis as a base to build a skull and instead of using the proportions, i use it for the logic. That is: ok, eys and ears are pretty much same height, jawline start from chin to ears and so on. By enlarging one part, i can still follow the logic and the basic geometrical shapes to keep the face "realistic", but at the same time to make it different from the bones. Very confusing, but it is easier to do it rather than explaining with words.
I draw heavily stylized drawings so I don’t really use the Loomis method because of how it favors realism drawings more. I use the box method which can also be a great partner with the Loomis method as you can just adjust the size of the box as well! Thanks for the video DLAS! Quality and informative content as always!✨
what do you use? please im desperate
Thanks, Mister Macaroni, for teaching us more about the loomis method

Loomis method is a base you can choose to exaggerate or minimize some proportion, if your face looks same every time using the method, you aren’t experimenting enough.

big thanks for this video, Mug !
Where novice artists get stuck is they learn this method and get stuck because they think this is "the way" to draw faces and have a hard time breaking free of the basic guide.
Once an artist understands that it's a template that can be tweaked, the Loomis method becomes far more valuable and flexible.
It's like a recipe. Follow it rigidly and you get the same result every time. But once you get comfortable with adjusting it to suit your preferences and needs you'll get a lot more mileage out of it.
Marcel can you please make a video on your best artworks of 2023 ?😢😢

Nice video maximusperemus
Make a full Loomis video
The point of the loomis head is to simplify the head into a circle and a box, if you can't change those forms slightly to match the head you're drawing, that's not because the loomis method doesn't work or you are bad at portraits it's that your fundementals are lacking. you need to be able to stretch and manipulate the sphere and box and if you cant, don't bother learning portraits yet, learn the fundementals
Loomis method huh, do a tutorial on that I would really appreciate it 😊
