Intel's future computers have two screens

  • Intel doesn't make computers, but that doesn't mean the company doesn't build prototypes of them. When Intel thinks of new ways their chips can be used, they build prototypes to prove it's possible, then partner with device makers to turn it into a consumer product. A recent example is Lenovo's new Yoga Book C930, which is based on Intel's Tiger Rapids prototype. In this week's Processor episode, Dieter Bohn visited Intel's Client Experience Center to learn why they build technologies for the future of computing just to give them away.

      I think a big smartphone/small tablet with full capabilities, with an e-ink screen for e-reading on the other side could be useful. I paid 250$ for a Kindle Oasis and it's unmatched as far as reading goes, but it's a ton of money for a single-purpose device

      How come Intel does all this R&D to let other companies take the product to market? Why aren't they in the OEM business? Wouldn't they be maximizing profit by offering the whole package themselves? Even if they had another company manufacture their goods, like Foxconn is to Apple?

    I honestly don't see dual screens going anywhere as long as they have a huge bezel separating them. Bending displays are the next thing.

    • @favourmokwenye6387

      I think it works quite well as an alternative if you're used to multitasking or doing productivity on a tablet type device. The physical separation would be much more intuitive. For people that want to use it as a consumption device not really. Running windows would be not ideal, but I think iOS on this would be really nice and almost like the MS Courier concept especially with all the tablet apps.

      No, their main and o ly competitor is AMD. Intel is microprocessor manufacturer, apple is consumer electronic company. They don't even assembly their own device.
      Apple A series is bases on Arm-licenced processor, manufactured by TSMC.
      Making a company is one thing, but making a manufacturing plant is another thing, and will be the costliest thing a company will ever spend. It's literally used too much money, that's why lots of big company prefer to partner up with already-existed manufacturers than building their own plant.
      Amd was, is and will always be intel's only enemy in consumer grade product. In server and workstation grade, however, intel is never off of the table as the only king. In supercomputer, intel is dogshit compared to IBM and Nvidia. IBM is currently powering the fastest supercomputer in the history, located in USA.

    as an audio engineer, the folding concept is interesting.
    I use a 27" touch screen on a vesa mount which is great for recording and mixing.
    I've noticed that the ideal screen angle for editing is different to the ideal angle for the faders, for example.
    The faders like to be flat to almost flat, the rest of the screen say at 40-45º.
    So I can't wait for a ultrawide touch slab to line up with my 27" in the horizontal dimension, that can replace my keyboard, trackpad and trackball and also double as faderbank, transport, macro launchers etc.
    A MacBook Pro or similarly powered portable device with with two screens like this could be awesome for AV content creators, editors etc.

      Saurabh Seth who are you god ? Do you see future ? Nobody can say that. That’s your opinion, every product has a downside and it’s not desktop golden age anymore so shut up

      He may get those 2-3 decades numbers out of thin air..but you don't have to be God to predict or 'see the future' it is called analysis. And anybody can say anything about what the future might be..so if you tell him to shut up, maybe you should too, just saying

      They don't care if it flops. They are only making the chips. Which will continue to happen. The product is produced by lenovo. They get there money whether it flops or not.

      Yota was actually a great idea. I had been looking for exactly that same thing for a long time. I love to use my phone for lots of stuff, but for reading I prefer paper, or an Ereader. It's less strain on my eyes and gives a nice reading experience overall. The reason I didn't buy that phone where the specs, they war very much under par compared to the rest of the market.

    I use the Yoga Book Android version all the time for drawing. The only problem I have is that some of the art apps are not properly optimized for it. If the developers can get a handle on it then this new tech will be good for artists, graphic designers, businesses ect.

    Exactly. I was thinking more and more in the last few days. Phones are becoming more and more powerful, even they may be a better fit for most users (productivity and just watching videos and what not) - the only needed thing is to be with thunderbolt or USB-C port - then you plug a some normal monitor (1080p60) and mice + keyboard and you are ready with your workstation. For the "on the go" you don't need anything or something like Asus ZenScreen may be enough.
    I'm really expecting to have ChromeOS smartphone in the future.

    I think this would be a great tool for students. They can have their textbook on the color screen where they can highlight sentences so they will remember what to focus on when they study, and then they can write their notes on the e-ink notepad screen and even submit their homework to the teacher electronically. No need for paper, and if they need to correct a mistake, they can erase without leaving any marks on the page. It would also be easier for them to carry since they wouldn't need to carry a heavy backpack with tons of books and their notebooks. All they need to bring to school is this tablet and they are set. And I'm sure someone will point out that they run on batteries, and they will need to be charged. Well, there are portable battery chargers you can bring with you. I have one, I use it to keep my phone charged.

    I'm a low-vision computer user, so I'm torn on a tech evolution that I think is inevitable. Keyboards that are actually displays seem smart and efficient, but actually FEELING the keys is so important to me. I want sleek, portable, and tiny as much as the next user, but I'm worried about what this evolution is going to mean for accessibility.

    + physical keyboard

  • @Peter-gb4ey
    @Peter-gb4ey 5 лет назад

    Maybe might be great for multitasking, but not much else. Keyboards are to essential to let go, because touch display keyboards cant and dont work the same way. Having a physical keyboard gets work done and you can only get by with touch for so long.

    I really like the idea of a second E-ink display, but the thinness of those boards makes me nervous. That said, if something like the new Lenovo Yoga existed that was capable of running performing well in Linux, I would be all for it.

    How I see it: at home and in the office I have a set of controllers (mouse + keyboard). I come to work, put the laptop on the stand like a book. On one screen, the browser is on the second programming application (in my case, since I am a programmer)

    i would really love a dual screen laptop, but i would not want the touch keyboard as the only method to type. all manufacturers of this type of thing should sell a magnetic keyboard surface that can be placed on top of the bottom screen. if it's thin but still uses regular chiclet scissor switches, it could be great.

  • @jurgen129
    @jurgen129 5 лет назад

    I'd use it if it had some haptical option for the keyboard. I need to feel the keys under my fingers. Also, I'd like to see a laptop innovation where one can finally work on a plane in economy class. This might be a yoga with detachable keyboard or similar.
