  • Intel's Vaunt smart glasses won't make you look like a Glasshole. Dieter Bohn got an exclusive look at Intel's latest gadget. By shining a low-powered laser into your retina, the glasses can get all sorts of information without pulling out your phone. UPDATE: In April 2018, Intel ceased development on the Vaunt smart glasses project.

If it was just a normal screen, it would be terrible for your eyes, sure. If I heard correctly, though, the idea is that the laser projects directly on the retina. No focusing of the eye's internal lens necessary. You could be staring into the stars at night while reading a book using this thing without the risk of getting lens induced myopia which you'd have if you read book by holding it in your hands.

They're highly reflective, which usually is a characteristic of low-quality glasses. In this case, they probably have to be reflective because of the laser. But nobody wants to wear reflective glasses all the time, it's terrible, especially in sunlight. Also, it makes your eyes look strange to others (like in the video).

    • @g.e.o.r.g.e...
      @g.e.o.r.g.e... 6 лет назад +5

I don’t think they’re unable to ad an AR coating on the exterior, or even a mirror finish. The design of the frame, being flat and leaving a huge gap between the outside corner of the eyes is a problem for reflections indeed.
I think they could make them more form fitting like typical active style Oakleys.
Imagine if they had a sharp camera with optical stabilization and like 3.4x zoom that could be projected into the dominant eye with a reticle that’s automatically adjusted for windage and elevation... you could shoot from behind cover accurately without shouldering the rifle.
I don’t really see it as being that much more expensive than premium glass, and it could save lives.

the devices they use to measure such things already has displays. i would love to see the technology to be used in red dot sights in rifles to measure ammo and distance though. it could be useful for businessmen and augmented reality glasses when laser projection could use full color spectrum.

    7) identifying pieces of art.
    8) google translate in real time.
    9) reminders for important events.
    10) Shazam - What’s that song?
    11) how many calories is this?
    12) How many units is this drink?
    13) What’s the score of the match I’m watching?
    14) combination of glasses with Air Pods.

@R X a lot of those points would need more sophisticated smart glasses with cameras. e.g. 2, 3, 11, 22 or would need a lot of integration with your smartphone e.g. 13 (only works if the phone knows what TV channel you're on), 7 (very exact indoor tracking + integration by the museum). But none of these are impossible, just probably something for generation 2 or 3

Well, the light source is not debatable. It's a laser-based technology, but unlike a traditional laser, VCSEL's phased photons are emitted perpendicular from the top surface. What you call laser is better known as an edge-emitting semiconductor laser or an in-plane laser. He made no mistake stating that it was not a laser. VCSELs are an order of magnitude more efficient than an in-plane laser.

Chris Slaghton yes, that’s exactly what I mean. I believe it is a circular blind spot about 3 degrees from our central vision. You can do an experiment with a piece of paper with a black dot on it. You put your eyes close to the paper and then move it side to side and the black dot will completely disappear when it is in the blind spot

You think they don't catch on? You should see the number of people who failed their degrees owing tens of thousands because they thought that tech would help them cheat. Every year.

L well, of course they catch on but it’s easier to cheat today with tech than it was back then without it. You just have to be cautious

Zipp4Everyone you can easily pass them off a prescription glasses and I’m sure once this tech hits the market, more versions from different companies will spawn which do a better job at masking the light.

I guess you haven't seen Steam or Newegg's recent or 6 month ratings that show up first then... just a couple of examples already existing that fix your concern. Also there is simply no way for an individual human to get their hands on every single product or meet every single person in the world, but collective reviews have been field tested for years, think online shopping, when a product has 2 or 3 stars it always means it has one or more significant flaws that undermine it's use and thus may not be a product worth investing in. To cite a very recent example for me (yesterday in fact) if a motherboard consistently fails to boot up for the vast majority of people, there is a very high chance you will pay for a dud product you can't use and a low chance of support in the near term considering they would have to get to all the other people that have failed products first.

I don't think that's possible due to the holographic reflector that needs to be inside the lens of the glasses. I can imagine most optical places being all over adding this as an option to go with their coatings and such, though.

It seems over the years there's still interest in wearable displays so I'm sure without a doubt that some time in the future we will all be wearing something other than what we have now. Just like the upgrade from regular phones to smartphones. If that's 1 year, 10 years or 20 years is hard to say but there seems to be a interest in it regardless. If it's a quality of life upgrade, it'll probably go quick.
