    I'm not one to fanboy over anyone, but with cautious optimism I must say that Elon Musk is an amazing human being, and an even better humanitarian. Truly a person we need, but do not deserve.

      The test failed.
      The only worthwhile part of SpaceX is that it is supposed to land again. It crashed. 2 small mini-rockets landed safely. The biggest part of the SpaceX rocket crashed into the sea at 300mph, damaging its drone-ship engines. Probably still floating there. SpaceX cut the livefeed and fudged over it, lying to their viewers, admitting it later after the big headlines of 'success' were already the story of the day. It failed, they knew it at the time, but most people won't hear about that now. This technology will be obsolete by the time Elon Musk figures out how to stop crashing them.
      Another massive carbon footprint - 400,000 kg of CO2 - equivalent pollution to 1 diesel car driving a million miles, in a couple of minutes (and no. It is not hydrogen and oxygen. It is kerosene with a massive carbon footprint.) He sent up 18 of these last year - 18 cars driving for a million miles - 7,200,000 kg of CO2. His electric cars are not going to take that carbon out of the atmosphere. It'll be there for decades. All for his silly playboy toy. Him and Richard Branson should find something better to do.
      ""During the news conference, Musk said the booster hit the water at a speed of about 300 mph and was about 328 feet away from the floating platform, taking out two of the drone ship's thrusters and showering the deck with shrapnel.""
      - LA Times - FEB 06, 2018.
      In other news: Global Sea Ice (Arctic, Antarctic, Hudson Bay, etc.) is at the lowest extent on record for this day of the year (and is flirting with the record low ever recorded).

Yea I fill propellant, yea I put make sure the seals are intact, yea I make sure the material can bear the contraction and expansion caused by rapid cooling and heating but you can't just come up with this and follow something from 0 with all your heart and put you money where your mouth is. Elon gets credit for all that 85% atleast in my opinion

    Guys, to put this in perspective: when FH was announced, SpaceX had never landed a booster. Their goals were insane. When it was delayed and delayed many people thought that it could never fly. Then, a booster was landed. Then another, and another. The Heavy became viable. Then, before all the hype, the payload was announced: a red Tesla Roadster, destined for Mars. The rocket launched, broke at least 10 world records, and sent a car out into the asteroid belt. Don't forget that five years ago this was impossible.

      Imagine how far Elon could go if guys like Bill Gates etc donated/helped the cause. Makes me wonder, all Elon is doing is electric cars and rockets. Why couldn't this of been done sooner? Is it because society by and large run by really old people who have a 1800's/1900's mentality and care not about technological advancements!?

    Honestly, what I love about Elon is he just truly seems like a down to earth guy and I know people say don’t meet your heroes but I feel like he wouldn’t let me down. He’s a human being, you can tell he’s nervous in front of crowds just as we all would be and that sense of passion is something I have been searching for to reinvigorate a new space race.
    I see so many bitter comments which is disheartening, how do you think you are able to stream videos, listen to music, travel and survive crashes, live in a high rise that can survive massive earthquakes, be warned of various natural disasters? The innovators, the teams of people throughout human history that sought to find answers that no one else ever had and they did it through trial and error. Every experiment leads to a new dataset to be studied that adds another puzzle piece that eventually becomes something that can be stable and improved upon from a basic blueprint that expands throughout the entirety of mathematics and the sciences that make the modern world such a fantastic place.

    Falcon heavy won't change anything. Its all Elon. The guy single handedly has inspired a generation of non-believers to switch and give hope to even the most cynical people that you can genuinely change the world. For sure future inventors and entrepreneurs will cite Elon as their biggest inspiration.

    • @mwnciboo
      @mwnciboo 6 лет назад

      redspin2ify FHR wil change everything....why it vastly reduces the cost to put 1kg in to space. Everything about launches is about weight....That constraint got loosened projects that weren't viable previously. The ISS would be about 10x bigger today for the same cost Having 64 ton capability means modules can be much bigger and more cost effective to begin with.

    • @miniwarrior7
      @miniwarrior7 6 лет назад

      Besides the price-practical point of view, how is it changing anything all that hugely?

    • @mwnciboo
      @mwnciboo 6 лет назад

      Saul Sepulveda Price is everything.....the major component of any space based project is the launch cost. ATLAS is $20,000 per kg, NASA Solar orbiter $14,000 per kg, DELTA IV $17,400 per kg Falcon 9 $4500 per kg. Falcon Heavy $1700 per kg.....yes $1700. 90% cheaper per kg than similiar rockets and circa 60% cheaper than Falcon 9. The biggest cost used to be the launch....now it isn't. When you reduce any cost of something by 90% and still be profitable you revolutionise the market. Price per KG is what has held us back, now we can move more and heavier equipment into space cheaper and quicker. We can now builder greater orbital platforms and begin the next phase of space exploration.

    • @Diamondragan
      @Diamondragan 6 лет назад +1

      3:05-3:46 bad background noise
      5:37-5:45 the video is spent watching Loren during early ascension
      These were pretty apparent on first/only view. I'm no video editor, but as a person watching this, it's a bit of a let down. For a video about a new rocket, I think that Loren gets an absurd amount of camera time.

    • @zapatka
      @zapatka 6 лет назад +3

      Diamondragan Diamondragan hey! If you wanted to watch the full launch, I’d highly recommend viewing it on SpaceXs RUclips. As for the bill nye interview, the hotel turned on the waterfalls by the pool right before we started rolling. Oh well!

    • @Diamondragan
      @Diamondragan 6 лет назад

      I would like to be a bit more specific. The background noise wasn't handled very well by the hardware, I assume. There are additional glitchy noises in the background that stand out from the waterfalls. They sound artificial. I feel like "superb" audio and editing could have attended to that.
      I feel like unabated praise takes the value away from itself. It's spoken without doubt or hesitation. There are people who use their time to rain on the parades of others for their personal entertainment, but that's not what I'm doing. I feel like something is being taken away by the use of the superlative here. In that way, the overly positive commentary is actually disappointing, as if something communicated so easily and with such intensity could be taken seriously or reflect a thorough consideration of the subject matter. It reads shallow.
      "Loren Grush on Falcon Heavy Launch w/Elon Musk, Bill Nye" would have set a more appropriate expectation for the video. I do not follow The Verge. This video was trending, and I have more of an interest in technology than other things. This was my first exposure to this news. There is too much footage of the launch and edited cuts of the geography around it for it to be parked behind the host during one of the most intense parts of the ascension. The current title, "Elon Musk on how Falcon Heavy will change space travel", sets up the video to be an interview with the focus on Elon Musk (mentioned first) and Falcon Heavy (mentioned second). Loren is not featured in the title. In order to have appropriate expectations of the video, I would have needed additional information or perhaps better viewing history/knowledge of The Verge.
      Your response leads me to believe that my pleas do not fall on deaf ears, unless you are accustomed to remaining polite despite how you might have felt given the criticism. I hope this finds you well.

    • @zapatka
      @zapatka 6 лет назад +5

      Diamondragan I like engaging our viewers on videos. Christian and I, the two directors on this video, were definitely not striving for perfection in this video. Many things went wrong, including audio issues and gear malfunctions. We went down originally expecting to shoot a very scripted piece and it evolved into something much more organic as we started gaining access to people to interview, especially Elon, who we didn’t know we were interviewing until hours before.
      In many ways, the efforts taken to get this video up in a timely manner meant spending less time on color correct and audio.
      In terms of Loren being on screen, she is a very prominent space reporter, and we were following a similar model to her show, Spacecraft, which she hosts (and why the graphic at the front is “Falcon Heavy with Loren Grush”, in the same graphic treatment as the Spacecraft show. We definitely intended this video to cater to her core audience, but it quickly gained traction since it’s the first video about Falcon Heavy that isn’t strictly about the launch from beginning to end.
      Either way, thanks for your comments! It’s all helpful, and they definitely don’t fall on deaf ears.

      And ten years from now, nothing will have happened. Nobody will be going around the moon, nobody going to Mars. Space travel is not real. NASA has been lying for 60 years. Big lies and big conspiracies happen. "Real rockets" have never been shown to reach "space." The video cuts before that supposedly happens. Research Apollo moon landings and 9-11. A lot of fakery to be found.

    • @Slayr.
      @Slayr. 6 лет назад +5

      It's not over hyped whatsoever. And it's not just a bigger rocket either. You two obviously don't pay attention.
      This is a big thing because it's the first ever reusable rocket. This will cut costs down tramendously. Less cost = higher production rate. Higher production rate = more research. More Research = more innovation and advancements in the technology. All equaling up to a huge advancement in space travel itself.

    • @CarFreeSegnitz
      @CarFreeSegnitz 6 лет назад

      This is one more bell rung on the space race. If a launch company wants to be in existence in a few years it needs to have rocket reuse or have its lunch eaten by SpaceX. Compare FH at $90 mil vs ULA Delta IV at $500 mil, the FH is more capable at less than a fifth the cost.
      Now we wait and see if a competitor will step up. SpaceX having reuse is fine but not as good as having a second or third who can do the same to keep SX honest and innovating. Blue Origin is the next closest but Bezos has to pour way more money in, seriously step up BOs schedule to become a contender.

    • @unlisted9494
      @unlisted9494 6 лет назад +1

      Nick, first of all, the Space Shuttle was reusable. Also, how exactly will this cut down on cost? The failure rate is abysmal. In just this one test, 1/3 rockets failed. When speaking of conventional rocketry, the failure rate is 1/200 and those are mostly technology from the 60's built at a fraction of what these cost with tooling that already exists. You really should stop watching so many movies and try grounding yourself in reality. The only reason he's been able to do what he has so far is because the USA is basically paying for it all with tax payer money, meanwhile cutting virtually ALL funding to NASA.

    A couple of centuries ago it would've taken weeks, maybe months to get from one side of the world to the other. The furthest an average person would travel in their lifetime would be a few miles from their place of birth. Yet now anyone can go pretty much anywhere on Earth in less than a day. Is it so hard to imagine a future where interplanetary travel becomes the norm? Technological advancement has accelerated at an unprecedented pace. I'm so glad someone like Elon Musk exists. Without such visionaries we wouldn't be making progress anywhere near this rate.

      Luis Hernández Thank you Luis you are correct. On the Internet you can't always expect positive vibes. Isn't it amazing seeing all this. I recall as a youngster in Scotland staying up most of the night to watch the first lunar landing! The engineering and software capability is mind blowing! Why were there [6:59...] "six sonic booms" to be heard?

    • @TheVerge
      @TheVerge  6 лет назад +11

      Hey Donny! This information is from SpaceX: “The first boom is from the aft end (engines), the second boom is from the landing legs at the widest point going up the side of the rocket. and the third boom is from the fins near the forward end.”
      That information was provided for the Falcon 9, and since the Falcon Heavy had two boosters land, the sonic booms totaled six.
      Hope this helps!
