  • A start-up called North, formally Thalmic Labs, is introducing a pair of smart glasses that it thinks will appeal to the masses because the design looks so similar to normal glasses. They're called Focals, and they cost around $1,000.
    Focals connect to your phone via Bluetooth and have a small projector that beams data into the wearer's eyes. They can tell the wearer the weather or time, read text messages and even order an Uber. The glasses are also connected to Alexa, so if you can ask them for directions or information, a small speaker will tell you the answers.
    North has raised over $140 million from investors including the Amazon Alexa Fund, Spark Capital, Intel Capital and Y Combinator.

    Quit chasing retail consumers and go after industrial consumers. Make a pair of safety glasses that you can receive data from a phone and a windows computer. Make them in prescription or reading and self dimming. Corporations with workers in the field will eat them up. Apple may do it later, but at-least most of the time, they do it right. I’m not a fanboy or anything, I tend to hop between Android and iOS. Just that when Apple does their glasses, everyone else will probably copy their design like what happened with the headphone jack and the notch.

    • @dyslexicstoner2408

      Who said Steve jobs would've done it? We don't actually know if he would do something like this. That's why that argument is invalid as Steve is dead so we don't know his opinion on this.

    • @dyslexicstoner2408
      @dyslexicstoner2408 5 лет назад +13

      @@sinecosine7493 Jesus. That 'argument' was never meant to be valid, not everything is supposed to be. Before he died there were rumors of apple going into more software, automotive, more smart products, etc. The most exciting thing at apple conventions for the past 6 years has been the new iPhone. That isn't exactly a good thing and it's getting kind of old, it seems like all this excitement about where apple will go next has been thrown out the window. Now it's about if they have USB c on the new iPad, what port they'll remove next on their laptops, or how minor the improvements are for the next iPhone. I don't know Steve jobs but I know he was a visionary and probably would've come up with something better than this by now. Apple was never meant to be a phone company, it was supposed to be a creative company. "think different" was the slogan, doesn't really apply to them now. Let's face it, apple is a boring company. So are most companies. It is just sad because of how interesting, creative, and impulsive it used to be 10+ years ago. It's to the point where the media is reporting the most useless, minor features because that is literally all they have done. Another phone, another watch, hey maybe a new iPad and $3000 imac, really? Apple is becoming a company Steve jobs used to always hate, just another company that doesn't stand out in any way and relies on success from 10 years ago to stay trendy. They now rely on their status and premium price, milking the past and giving nothing new, obviously won't last long. Apple was once that company that everyone seemed to love.

      Naitrio Bluetooth has a signal processing delay so I’m not to sure relying on the phone is a viable option. Plus trying to make sure the information is encoded properly can be a pain. Then signal interference and a host of other things. Having it in the glasses is the best option until Bluetooth gets farther along but by them we will have the chips we need to do it in a smaller form imo. Amd is already talking about pushing to 3 or 5 nm nodes in ryzen 5th gen. A 3 nm chip design might help the size if its a custom chip but then we get into cost issues and economic pf scales issue.

      A pair of smart glasses with no screen, that activates only when you want to, allows you to send, read and receive text messages/FB messages, interact with Alexa, ask a question in google, get local maps, get directions to where you’re going, play your music, take/make phone calls, show you the current weather, show you the weather forecast, and of course show you the current time, etc. That’s quite a bit of info - almost as much as any high end smart watch, all of which start at $399+ and go up to $1999+, all while in a much more ergonomic and private design that reduces your screen time while letting you connect more with the people and places you love in real life isn’t enough? Considering regular glasses can easily cost more than $300 each, $999 for these truly revolutionary smart glasses isn’t asking for that much considering they’re also just in low rate initial production, meaning the price will likely drop by ~25% by the end of next year, is really, really good all things considered.

      10 years is way too far out -- 10 years is basically the distance between the invention of the smart phone & the Samsung Galaxy Note 9 -- & information technology only accelerates.
      I fully expect to see a much more functional pair of glasses from Apple or Samsung by 2020 -- & something that can entirely replace a smartphone by 2022 or 2023.

      @@dr.zoidberg8666 Youre being ignorantly optimistic. Google glass was released in 2012, and this new 2018 invention is pretty much just a redesign.

    • @dr.zoidberg8666
      @dr.zoidberg8666 5 лет назад

      @@kali3828 Nah, Google Glass probably shouldn't have ever been released to the public. It was basically nothing more than a tech demo to show the world that it was now possible to make small, high density transparent screens.
      That being said, the product that you're looking at ain't it either. This is an example of a company trying to cash in on the hype cycle before the real products come out, probably brought to you by either Apple of Samsung to begin with. It doesn't represent the cutting edge of what is possible technologically -- only a demonstration that the form factor is now possible.
      All of that aside, people forget all the time that technological progress is exponential, not linear. Take the human genome project. After 7 years of work, the project had completed right around 1% of the human genome. That lead all kinds of experts who don't understand how technology works to proclaim that we wouldn't see the human genome decoded until 2100 or later. Of course, the following 99% was completed in the next 7 years. That's how exponential progress looks.
      You see something that is only barely better than the Google Glass. I see that we've almost made it to a viable general purpose holographic interface.
