Amazon-Backed Smart Glasses For $1,000: First Look

- Опубликовано: 22 окт 2018
- A start-up called North, formally Thalmic Labs, is introducing a pair of smart glasses that it thinks will appeal to the masses because the design looks so similar to normal glasses. They're called Focals, and they cost around $1,000.
Focals connect to your phone via Bluetooth and have a small projector that beams data into the wearer's eyes. They can tell the wearer the weather or time, read text messages and even order an Uber. The glasses are also connected to Alexa, so if you can ask them for directions or information, a small speaker will tell you the answers.
North has raised over $140 million from investors including the Amazon Alexa Fund, Spark Capital, Intel Capital and Y Combinator.

Quit chasing retail consumers and go after industrial consumers. Make a pair of safety glasses that you can receive data from a phone and a windows computer. -We introduce this new step in technology, the Apple Glasses.
PhilipZakeus
Apple may do it later, but at-least most of the time, they do it right. I’m not a fanboy or anything, I tend to hop between Android and iOS. Just that when Apple does their glasses, everyone else will probably copy their design like what happened with the headphone jack and the notch.
PhilipZakeus Steve Jobs would've done it. New apple wouldn't dare to do anything innovative or ambitious lmao.
Apple only does something when the technology isn’t new and they perfected it so it’s better than everyone else’s and they don’t waste money. i.e. FaceID.
Quinten McLaughlin
Who said Steve jobs would've done it? We don't actually know if he would do something like this. That's why that argument is invalid as Steve is dead so we don't know his opinion on this.
@@sinecosine7493 Jesus. That 'argument' was never meant to be valid, not everything is supposed to be. Before he died there were rumors of apple going into more software, automotive, more smart products, etc. The most exciting thing at apple conventions for the past 6 years has been the new iPhone. That isn't exactly a good thing and it's getting kind of old, it seems like all this excitement about where apple will go next has been thrown out the window. Now it's about if they have USB c on the new iPad, what port they'll remove next on their laptops, or how minor the improvements are for the next iPhone. I don't know Steve jobs but I know he was a visionary and probably would've come up with something better than this by now. Apple was never meant to be a phone company, it was supposed to be a creative company. "think different" was the slogan, doesn't really apply to them now. Let's face it, apple is a boring company. So are most companies. It is just sad because of how interesting, creative, and impulsive it used to be 10+ years ago. It's to the point where the media is reporting the most useless, minor features because that is literally all they have done. Another phone, another watch, hey maybe a new iPad and $3000 imac, really? Apple is becoming a company Steve jobs used to always hate, just another company that doesn't stand out in any way and relies on success from 10 years ago to stay trendy. They now rely on their status and premium price, milking the past and giving nothing new, obviously won't last long. Apple was once that company that everyone seemed to love.

For all start-ups. Leave the heavy processing hardware OUT of the glasses. Focus on a good battery and wireless transmitter .... Then utilize the power of everyones smartphone these days to drive the actual content of the glasses. That makes it much more flexible / versatile long-term and much more comfortable to wear due to reduced weight.
MysticMarble thenks men... Now tiem to mayk my glassehs
...and then you're selling hardware that will be sold cheaper by other companies in a matter of weeks. Basically startups like this either get overvalued to high heavens which in turn will make future development possible or just fizzle out. Given CNBC is shilling for them, it's pretty likely they'll do fine, sell the company for a few millions, no one in the end actually sees the glasses and that's about it.
Yeah that makes sense to let the phone do the processing, and focus on battery life and a less clunky/lighter design.
Naitrio Bluetooth has a signal processing delay so I’m not to sure relying on the phone is a viable option. Plus trying to make sure the information is encoded properly can be a pain. Then signal interference and a host of other things. Having it in the glasses is the best option until Bluetooth gets farther along but by them we will have the chips we need to do it in a smaller form imo. Amd is already talking about pushing to 3 or 5 nm nodes in ryzen 5th gen. A 3 nm chip design might help the size if its a custom chip but then we get into cost issues and economic pf scales issue.
Oh that kinda sucks. Maybe someday though can we have smart glasses that are very light and sleek.

The ring is where I said no.
i thought the ring was cool idea.
But you will be wearing the glasses for the majority of the time, especially if they are prescription glasses that you need to see. Also, if you lose the ring, it's game over 🤷♀️
Imara Brooks Game over? What do you do if you lose an Apple Air Pod? You buy a replacement. Sure it’s probably going to be very expensive at first, but eventually it will get cheaper. I also find it very incredible you’d assume that something like that would be so easy to lose. People wear rings all the time, myself included, and majority of people don’t lose them most of the time. Heck people wear wedding rings for decades at a time and never lose them.
You mean you ready to wipe or swap by the front of yours glass with a dirty finger?
Dale Berry i dig the ring
And I thought texting while driving was bad...
Stop looking while driving
It could be used with smart navigation tools to give you directions as HUD arrows. Most people typically use the top half of their glasses for distance viewing so if the directions were in the lower portion you could avoid having to look down at your phone for directions. Would need some study to look at the impact on user safty though.

These would be awesome for Google maps on the motorbike, now just for the price to drop to 250, say 5 years?
Never gonna happen. The cost per unit of processing power goes down as time goes by -- but that doesn't mean the cost of devices goes down. It means that we make much more powerful devices at the same or slightly higher cost.
Early glasses like these will be silly toys for dumb rich people, just like the smart watches are. But the intention of the industry is to create robust general purpose devices capable of replacing a smartphone -- & those won't be set at cheap price points.
Dr. Zoidberg these glasses have about as much processing power as an Obamaphone. All they do is tell the weather and order Ubers not translate languages or run Augmented reality.
Augmented maps would be awesome. Also, Thelonewarrior, the helmet you’re referring to is probably Skully. The startup failed, scandals happened, attempts to revive, and the whole thing is still in a kind of limbo. People that preordered in 2014 are still waiting for one (no refund mentioned).
@@dr.zoidberg8666 If we advance our reshearch in the new computational techniques and similar we could double or triple the strenght of our electronics. so instead of laying the components of a microchip in the way that we are doing (or architecture of those even) if we do it another way we could very easily triple the power of graphics cards. so for example a graphics card which is 8 Gigabytes now if it had a different architecture it could achieve 16 or even 24 gigabytes
same goes for processing chips. with different architecture 3 MHz processor could be a 6 GHz processor or even 9GHz processor and luckily hardware manufacturers are investing in these new architectures.
The design in the only upgrade here. This is grossly under-ambitious compared to Glass.

A pair of smart glasses with no screen, that activates only when you want to, allows you to send, read and receive text messages/FB messages, interact with Alexa, ask a question in google, get local maps, get directions to where you’re going, play your music, take/make phone calls, show you the current weather, show you the weather forecast, and of course show you the current time, etc. That’s quite a bit of info - almost as much as any high end smart watch, all of which start at $399+ and go up to $1999+, all while in a much more ergonomic and private design that reduces your screen time while letting you connect more with the people and places you love in real life isn’t enough? Considering regular glasses can easily cost more than $300 each, $999 for these truly revolutionary smart glasses isn’t asking for that much considering they’re also just in low rate initial production, meaning the price will likely drop by ~25% by the end of next year, is really, really good all things considered.

@@dr.zoidberg8666 Youre being ignorantly optimistic. Google glass was released in 2012, and this new 2018 invention is pretty much just a redesign.
@@kali3828 Nah, Google Glass probably shouldn't have ever been released to the public. It was basically nothing more than a tech demo to show the world that it was now possible to make small, high density transparent screens.
That being said, the product that you're looking at ain't it either. This is an example of a company trying to cash in on the hype cycle before the real products come out, probably brought to you by either Apple of Samsung to begin with. It doesn't represent the cutting edge of what is possible technologically -- only a demonstration that the form factor is now possible.
All of that aside, people forget all the time that technological progress is exponential, not linear. Take the human genome project. After 7 years of work, the project had completed right around 1% of the human genome. That lead all kinds of experts who don't understand how technology works to proclaim that we wouldn't see the human genome decoded until 2100 or later. Of course, the following 99% was completed in the next 7 years. That's how exponential progress looks.
You see something that is only barely better than the Google Glass. I see that we've almost made it to a viable general purpose holographic interface.
I stop when they said a ring controller.
Jacob Tran exactly!
I think it's a pretty good idea
You'll get used to it.
I stop when they said 1000$ 😂
@@kittitachraksakham1348 same here😂
Imagine it can scan the questions on your test and tell you the answers
Very clear. Not click baity. I appreciate this video.
If they open up the software so that anyone can make apps for it then I would love to buy one, otherwise paying 1000 dollars for this when you can just glance at your Smartphone or Smartwatch is stupid and it will fail.
Not if your already getting classes which cost a few hundred dollars.
I thought the smart watches wete kind of dumb too but they're thriving so I bet it'll be the same story with these glasses
100% agreed
or just get a normal wristwatch
CMJango you’ll spend more on gas why not spend it on something that you wear all day.
But: do they have a headphone jack?
no
What about making them have the bone conductivity "speakers", haven't really tried those glasses but if they do work that'd be pretty cool
I clicked because the glasses on the thumbnail were displaying my birthday lol

Which is worse? Zombie people looking down at phones or zombie people staring into empty space?
Terence Miranda
Ever see somebody daydreaming? Or thinking?
This could be useful in the Industrial Market.
Zombie people who couldn't see the potential of technology. Well, at least you tried to sound smart.
Zombie people complaining about technology
Zombie people not understanding the concept of integrating technology with everyday items to make life easier \(°-°)/
Pretty sure we all gonna be blind by 2050
Don't worry...we'll all be dead from foodweb collapse way sooner :)
Just wear your sunglasses under them!
If you get blind they will implant you a "smart camera" on the brain. With portrait mode!!

*entire left eye is reserved to display the date LOL*
So now everyone's around but no one is looking at each other because they are busy looking at their cellphones..
In future people are looking at each other but not looking at each other?
Kunal Bajaj r/PhonesAreBad
@kunal Annoying isn't it? To me weary much // PPL are already gone // whit this even more.
no people will still talk to each other but we will skip the small talk and get real because we will be able to read your name, age, job and hobbies hovering next to your body.
@@MelonManofWar cool. Then nobody will even have to go through the hassle of feeding me their cover stories in a convincing manner. My glasses will do it for them. Maybe then I will even be able to get fake news through my glasses.
*Black mirror intensifies*
Smart glasses? No. But you put these in a Motorcycle Helmet and it's a day-1 purchase for me!
Is there a version with the display on the left lens? I'm blind in my right eye.
I was going to try and type some thoughtful argument on why it would be a bad idea,
but then I just thought about computer screens.
...Just be careful driving.
Don't cheat on your exams...
Smitty Werbenjagermanjensen driving is fine it’s below your vision so definitely better than phones plus cheating is a plus tf
Smitty Werbenjagermanjensen 😂
The problem I see with this is...
a) it brings no more functionality than other gadgets
b) it is bigger and heavier
c) It distracts us even more from ourselves.
