As a person who grew up with Tonka trucks, and still owns two, I want to thank you for rescuing so many, and bringing them back to be played with. Bless you sir.
You were the first restoration I watched. Over a year ago, now I am hooked! My wood shop is now a Tonka Garage. Have restored around ten now starting a new one! Watch several restorers now.
@@MrKenstar2I understand what your saying. It's easy to break, add grease and other stuff to make things appear older than they are. The problem here is oxidation. You van make something look as if it was oxidized, but for something to actually oxidize takes time and have bugs in them, takes time in harsh conditions. Oxidation is a chemical reaction, in this case ions are exchanged with oxygen. Metal (ferrous 2+ extra electron or Ferric 3+ extra electrons) oxygen has 8 electrons to share. When H2O come in contact with Fe you end up with a passionate match of 4Fe+3O2 - 2Fe2O3. Depending how much of this reaction has taken place, you may or may not have enough Fe left to work with. This is a simplified version of oxidation. You can't sand blast something that is grime to make it look oxidized. It must be clean of residue or grime. It's kind of hard to achieve such natural form of decay unless the where bought and thrown away allowing it to rust and be decayed by nature over a long period of time. If that's the case, he's still doing a darn good job at restoring it back to mint condition.
Though I liked the various dolls I was given, I envied my older brother's Tonka cars, dump trucks snd crane. When I was around six, my Dad gave me a "found" blue horse trailer for my various plastic animals. I played with my long trailer more than my metal kitchen set (refrigerator, stove and sink). Once we became teens our toys were passed down to younger relatives or donated. Thank you for bringing them back to such amazing conditions. 🍄🍄
I love how Beaker gave it such a good inspection at the beginning and then gave it less than a cursory glance at the end as if to say, “Yeah, well, that’s more like it.” Superb restoration. I thought there would have been more holes in it, the rust was everywhere. It looked so bad.
Following a very detailed inspection by "Dr. F.E.LINE", the order to proceed was issued. The Master Restorer then took over, and what a result ! My sincere compliments to you & the Dr. BRILLIANT WORK !
There are lots of Tonka restorers out there in YT land but none with the skills and craftsmanship you display in every video. Thanks for sharing another of your creations with us.
Wait. hold up, the gentleman @ TRG RESTORATIONS is as good as Chip here in my opinion I also believe they have mutual respect for one another and both are some of the best in the biz.
Back when I was a hippie, I discovered a 1958 GMC Pickup in a garage. I bought it for $3,000, fooled around with it for 2 years, and finally ended up selling it for $3,000 with no wiring in it. Just a short story from the good old days. You did what I wanted to do only smaller. Keep up the good work!
Really, REALLY enjoy watching these restorations! Quality of work and your attention to the details.... simply top notch! Well done, young man.... well done indeed! Take care, be safe and God bless!
Amazing job as always. You are preserving these toys for the future generations, so they know, what kids in our times played with. These old toys are true treasures and a valuable heritage of a long gone era.
Very nice. It amazed me that there was very little rust under the peeling paint! When I first saw it I figured you would be JB Weld/ bondo-ing the entire truck.
Another great result. It was in a terrible state!!! The sand blasting is a real blessing for a job like that and it is as strangely therapeutic as ever. They really came up with a host of different trucks off the basic layout. Look forward to the next one!!!
Lovely restoration. A true labor of love. Sandblasting that front grill was the best ASMR. Made me happy and able to get thru the rest of my day. Thanks.
From the start I thought this truck was going to be in far worse shape. I was amazed after the sand blasting to see it wasn't as bad. I wasn't sure I would like the color but it turned out great. Another amazing job.
Another amazing restoration! Thank you for sharing! I agree that the pattern and texture of the paint flaking and corrosion was interesting. I see that others have commented that the original paint appeared more turquoise, which I like very much; but I am also a fan of the green that you chose. Both colors are appropriate to the era. Hello to Beaker and the sheep. 😊
The checkering was a bit like something that had been in a fire, but the truck overall didn't look like it had been. Could the choice of color have to do with what the powder manufacturer makes available as standard colors? I'm sure a turquoise could be mixed, but there would need to be enough of it to coat everything, and some kept for any future repairs to that particular toy. (Or perhaps an exact formula by weight of standard color powders arrived at, and that formula then kept with the toy.)
Nice. I was born in 1962. Can not remember what year I got my Tonka fire engine, I believe 1966. It pumped water. I still have the engine. I pull it out for the Christmas Tree every year. I did not find a Tonka. When replacing the sewer line in my 1951 house, I found a rubber truck. I did clean it up.
My daughter says .... " Where is the sheep ? .... Oh. A cat... that's OK "... my son sees the sandblater and says Dad can we get one ? For what l replied .... meatloaf night he said... glad my wife is at her sister's ... nice restoration, very cool truck.
Suggestion when applying pressure-sensitive decals. Spray a bit of soapy water on the model and the back of the decal. That will allow you to position them. When the water evaporates, the decal is in place for good.
Beaker's getting good at doing cat scans of your finished work, and has the same coloring as my oldest cat. Incidentally, housecats are derived from the African wild cat, and are about the same size and the colors are about the same as Beaker and my Sandy cat.
You could cut groves into the copper pipe that sets on the nickel plater. To sit down a bit on the edges of the container so the pipe will stay in place. Love your vids I’m a 70 year old lady who has got hooked. I remember playing with this truck.
I see Beaker did a initial safety check before you began...and she found it safe. And it met her finished quality control inspection...of course it's always good to treat the inspector. Another fine job at restoration, Chip. Thanks again for sharing!
Очередной грузовик получился просто Сууууперрр отличная работа я я каждое ваше видео смотрю с огромным удовольствием мне хочется вернуться в детство когда я был маленьким и у меня были игрушки.
That’s now a work of art,I’d gladly put that on my bookshelf as a book end, please please do the tank next I like the look of that one, thanks for sharing Love and peace from Ireland
I really like the restoration of these classic toys, brings me back to a bunch of childhood memories of having fun all year lomg when I was child/pre-teen.
Once again, a beautiful restoration! You do the best work! I agree I prefer the original blue with the white. It seems more early 60’s! Ether way top notch!!
Another brilliant restoration! I definitely wish you had gone with turquoise instead of jade green as turquoise would have been more period appropriate.
Your inspector is cute! Great fleet. I am amazed that the metal under all that corrosion was in such good shape. Thanks for blanking out the welding flash.
Chip channel Restoration you continue to amaze me with your amazing talent and dedication to complete your work and make them toy cars and trucks a new toy to make any child happy again.😂 😂😂😂😂
Great video! absolutely love the way it turned out, however I think I would have stuck with a turquise, the green just doesn't do it justice. And maybe would have done the endgate lettering white, to match the rest of the accents
I'm curious whether getting the turquoise would have required a custom mix of the powders rather than an existing single color powder, meaning that there would need to be enough mixed (and tested) to do the entire job. I.e. uniform color reproducibility on all the parts (including something that might need to be fixed in future) might have been why not turquoise. I really don't know the full process, but I believe I have seen that Chip dips his powdercoat powder from factory furnished containers.
I think I had one of these as a kid. Seem really familiar. I remember taking rear sign frame off and the grill would come off and the top of the cab popped off. I was had on my toys. Wish I had them still
The kids and I were getting worried about the one-eyed sheep, but after rewinding a few times we spotted it. My little ones were relieved that it's okay. Fantastic work on the restore and thank you for the content
One of the the easiest and most straightforward disassemblies so far. Some of the projects are so complicated that I wonder if you need to rewatch the video to get it back together. Always great stuff.
One thing I've learned from a lot of restoration channels over the years, is that most of the channels started purely because they were already recording the videos of teardown for reassembly purposes leading many to just put them up and then get into it as they went along. Might not be his inspo, but it's likely
If only we could recapture our youth as elegantly as you restore these toys ......
As a person who grew up with Tonka trucks, and still owns two, I want to thank you for rescuing so many, and bringing them back to be played with. Bless you sir.
My five year old grandson watched this with me. He loved it and proclaimed the truck beautiful!
Your restorations are no longer just toys ...they are top quality museum pieces.... excellent job...👍👍👍👍👍
Too bad the videos are fake, nothing is in that bad of shape
@@MrKenstar2 I don't know, I've been to several antique shops and some old toys do look like how this did in the beginning.
@@MrKenstar2 I don't think it's fake.

I'm always astounded at how good the metal is under all that rust. They really built toys to last back when I was a kid!
The condition is fake, always is

The catspector was unsure about this one. Once again you blew my socks off . Another beautiful restoration. Even Beaker was surprised. Just wow!
At first Beaker was like "Uh...I don't know about this one..."

I can only imagine the immense degree of satisfaction you must feel having completed a transformation like this. Looks better than new now.
I was expecting a lot of pitting but lo and behold, once sandblasted the steel looked factory fresh.
... and exactly this made me think, the car suffered from a chemical fake corrosion...
@@tommes55 That thought was in my mind also. Just needed some footage of a surprise finding in the gardens or rice fields nearby 😉

Look at Beaker inspecting the truck. She's becoming a real expert on restoration, honestly she probably knows more than I do at this point.
But I'm not sure how safe it is for a cat to be sniffing lead paint.
Tonka never used lead paint, even on much older models.
She needs to be sure it's purrrfect.
I honestly didn’t think there was enough metal under all that rust to restore. Once again you astounded me and proved me wrong. Beautiful work!
