1957 Tonka Big Mike Snow Plow Highway State Dept Dump Truck Restoration

- I purchased this 1957 Tonka Big Mike State Highway Department Snow Plow Truck online for $465.00 January 27th 2022. This truck must have hauled a million loads of rocks and dirt as the dump bed was by far the worst off on the truck. The inside of the frame and cab were also heavily rusted. It was missing one headlight otherwise it was entirely complete which is shocking considering the condition of the truck. The dump bed had been ripped off at one time and the rivets were no longer holding the bed on, the two hydraulic cylinders were also broken, I assume it all happened at the same time the dump bed got ripped off, it's interesting to me that the bed got ripped off yet overall it had no real dents to be seen. The cab had a dent in one door and just under the hood scoop where I bet someone tried to force something through the hood scoop causing the metal to bend. After sandblasting the level of rust pitting was extremely obvious which took quite a bit of metal filler to smooth out. I actually ended up putting on two coats of powder coat filler primer and wet sanded twice to get all the imperfections out. I had one little mistake on the snow plow attachment plate where my hook for the powder coating ended up damaging the final coat and I'll eventually strip that part and redo it, otherwise I'm extremely happy with how this truck came out and honestly have been looking forward to adding this to the collection for some time. Now I just need to find a Land Rover style of the same truck with the big floatation tires. Thank you for watching!

This is my favorite restoration so far. I had a “Big Mike” snowplow which was handed down to me from a cousin. Like all my Tonka’s it got played with outside and Big Mike got pretty rusty over the years from “plowing snow”. I truly love the detail and craftsmanship that went into bringing this awesome piece of childhood history back to life.
I had a single axel one when I was young. Did not know about BIG MIKE. Very cool.
My brother had one of these. We built whole cities in our back yard. Thank you for sharing. I miss my little brother very much. After Vietnam he was lost mentally. Now he has gone to a better place.
So sorry for your loss so many never came back physically or mentally.
❤️
Mi dispiace molto. Riposi in pace.
im so sorry for your brother
We thank him for his honorable service to these great United States of America.
May forever rest easy…
😔🙏🇺🇸❤️
Thank you for the Tonka restoration therapy!!!! I love watching you return these iconic toys to their former glory!!!
You just know that truck sat under a Christmas tree back in '57 and made a boy's Christmas morning and a lot of hours afterwards fun! I received a lot of Tonka Toys as a kid for Christmas. They were special gifts!
Your attention to details, your patience, the amount of investment in your shop equipment.... beyond impressive! You're a better person than I could ever be when it comes to this passion! Well done, young man.... well done indeed!!!
Thanks soo much Jim Thompson!! Comments like these really help me stay motivated with this hobby! Hope you have a wonderful weekend!

In my opinion, you have the greatest toy collection ever. Brings me back to a great time as a child in the 60s. Thanks for the memories.
Thank you soo much Woodrow Call!! It was definitely a much better time than today.
The dumbest part about it is that the idiot collectors on eBay would only pay 1/3rd of the price for this mint condition restored truck compared to an original in “fair” condition. I’d much rather have the professionally restored one.
@SPV-R01----------👇💋 they're all gross...
@@spacefren3826 Museums restore items. There is nothing wrong with restoring things rather than let them rot away.
@@janbaer3241 he's saying that the "collectors" would pay more for one all beat up and rusted, compared to one fully restored, and he thinks that's ridiculous. If I was a collector, I'd prefer one that's been as thoroughly and beautifully restored as this one, compared to one that was left in the sandbox and then chucked into a box and neglected for decades.
Chip, it's always fantastic to see how you transform a neglected model into something even more beautiful than new.
It's relaxing to watch your video's.
Your results looks amazing after restoration 😍 good job 👏
Agreed!
Привет Chip, как всегда хорошая работа 👍

Thank you!
Special thanks for this one. I’m in the middle of my own Big Mike resto and your video will definitely help me get it done. Great job btw. 👍🏼
Chip, i’ve been watching your restoration videos for a couple years now. I thoroughly enjoy the start to finish, including your cat at the end. I’ve seen the growth of changing from a hand press, to an electric press. Also, the CNC machine, and other tools you’ve changed, or upgraded to which makes your shop look so professional and the go to person if you wanted to restore an old pressed steel truck. There are many other individuals who also restore, toys, etc. that I give kudos to, but none compared to you. Thanks for always taking the time and care to show everything you do, including the weld bond to cover, imperfections, pitting, etc.
i would say the closest one is old things never die thee youtuber
There's something soooooo therapeutic about watching 'sand blasting' being done!
Your restorations are amazing, plus the detail to recording is great. Thank you for letting us listen to you work and not some annoying music. This is so relaxing!
These videos are how I chill before bed. Thank you for your service.
(BTW, the slot in the tailgate is so it can be locked partially open. You would fill the dumper with sand, then tilt it up with the gate open a crack to spread sand over the road.)
I am an old lady who just caught you on You Tube tv so had to subscribe so I can watch all of your restorations. Excellent and fascinating.
The complicated construction, parts count, and “gimmicks” on this plow-truck are quite surprising considering it’s era and the subject matter. Of course for me by the early 70’s when I had a few, they were quite simplified. Everyone wanted the big yellow dump truck, cause you could ride on it lol. Nice work!
They really put alot of thought into these old toys, todays toys just can't compete. Thanks for watching Jim Letts!
You must have been a tiny kid back then…. Or was that yellow dump truck really BIG?
@@robertdragoff6909 I did also. At 4 or 5 you could put your knee in it and push it along.
@@jamesmartin1489
LOL! I thought it was so big you could sit on it and ride around on it.

Tonka always made great toys . I still have my sons grader from the 70s. Yes it’s been played with heavily,. I would love to see you remake that one. You do wonderful work, and I love watching the old toys come back to life. Thank you for sharing .
Your funny 🙂🇺🇸
My cousin seemed to have all the Tonka toys. My cousin, brother and me had a great time building roads and cities. These toys last for generations.
I’m a boomer stuck in a millennial body. Anything from the old school is more interesting than anything today. Those toy cars are just awesome and you did excellent job giving them life again. Thank you for putting in the hard work to restoring em.

Sir I found and watched and love the care you put into restoring these forgotten toys.
Thanks soo much Laurie Fox!
Laurie I wouldn't say forgotten: my 56 Ford dump &stake bed ( like this snowplow) still remembered and missed this restoration was fun to watch Thanks Chip
@@bradzimmerman3171 Question, do you have your collection covered on your homeowners policy, some of yours go for a very pretty penny. Not forgotten by you, but the child of yesterday.
Definitely one of the more interesting and unusual ones you've restored so far. I almost hoped you'd leave the plow as it was and clear coat it since it looked as if it was worn from road plowing. Cool model. Nice job!
I remember playing in the dirt with my Tonka toys as a boy. We had no smart phones, no IPads, no PC's, etc, but we had fun. It was a neighborhood affair with me & all my friends; life was so simple back then. I miss the simplicity of those days! Another great restoration; you are a skilled craftsman!
It's amazing how you completely transform these toys from the condition they're in to better than new condition. I remember these toys from my childhood and you do a fantastic job on them.😁❤️👍
You’re not kidding; that thing was more rusty than a Yugo left out in the rain… and now look at it!
i have to say this ,its so nice to see someone when reassembling the the restoration , using a towel :) i have watched some people do all the work ,powder coat .nickel plate .and then assemble it on a hard surface . scratching the paint work . breaks my heart . props to chip .its the little things that matter .the small details that make a difference :)
I just love the bright orange color. So awesome
Such an awesome restoration of this vintage truck. The skill set involved in this is so incredibly amazing. Also love the bright orange colour.A job well done you should be so proud chip.👍
You always do a fantastic job in restoring these old toys, thank God there are people like yourself that preserve our past, I thank you SIR.
First question I have is, how in the hell do you remember how to put it back together? There's so many parts.
Another stunning job. Bringing me right back in time to my childhood. What good times it was.
Thank you.
It's always so satisfying watching the final product get put together
Another amazing restoration! I don't remember the boys in my neighborhood having this particular truck in the 60's, but I do remember playing with the Tonkas in the snow (and heat and rain). Watching you give these old rust buckets new life takes me back to my childhood, but the process and problem-solving are also fascinating to watch!
I’m an 80’s kid, but grew up playing with 1960’s Tonkas, and gosh you can’t beat them ❤
Great job as always…your restoration brings back many fond memories of these toys…my father was a cross-country hauler in the early 1960’s…he would bring me Tonka trucks from all over the country when he was home between trips…
Thanks again…😎
Thanks for sharing your memory
I really appreciate the steps you take to truly make the finished product look like new. Others just do an 80 or 90% job. You take the time and make the effort to go to 100% the difference between the amateurs and professionals like yourself. Well done as always.
Watching this video brings back the golden memories, God bless you,,.
I had one of these, plus several other Tonka trucks. I got it for Christmas, when I was 7. This takes me back to memory lane. Good job. A very nice restoration.
Thank you!
Another loving masterpiece of restoration. Thank you! Can we get a round of applause for Tonka's Designers, toolmakers etc? What a realistic result to fuel a young kid's imagination. Just like the real thing. In my distant memory I'm still enjoying the slow rise of that hydraulic lift. Love it.
MY brothers had these toys but, I played with them more than they did!!!!! I LOVE YOUR WORK!!!!!!
Glad to see you still having such a great time restoring the old Tonkas and others. Fantastic work, as always.
IT’S ALL RUST!!! I thought Big Mike was a goner…

A thing of beauty! Thank you for posting this.
I'm sure toys has to be proud feel after reborn again. Great work and you taking care of all close details. so proud of you. love you lots.
Thank you Yakub Patel!! 🤗
Another brilliant restore. Thanks for sharing your talents with us all. Love your work
Золотые руки чистая душа!
Thank you!
This is literally the stuff I wish I could do but I’m not mechanically inclined in anyway… so watching you is like living my dream in a way
You can do anything, if you put your mind into it. Learning, dedication, patience, knows no age. Its never to late to do what you want in life, you have that passion there, the sky's the limit! I have every faith in you!
I've been waiting for this one since I saw it. It's amazing how complex this toy is, I thought its only difference with others Tonka trucks would be a big plate of metal in its front, but it ended having a lot of pieces!
Wow! This is quite and impressive restoration. I can venture out and claim that it probably looks way better than when it was manufactured the first time. Great job as always.👏
Ви робите дуже добру, корисну і навіть благородну справу!
Браво!
Finally a new show - wow the wait was agonizing to say least.Thank you for bringing the smile again. Now this one toy that was put to the test by the kid who played with it.The ROI was worth it.
This one took a little while. Was up until midnight finishing up the edit for it. Thanks for stopping in Philip Amadi!
Debía ser lo máximo tener esos coches de niño. Gracias por compartir.
Que hermoso la terminación del camión 🚛 es espectacular un verdadero placer el ver el trabajo ⚒ maestro
Now that is my kind of Transformer, from icky truck to showroom floor.
I love sandblasting, but I think the coolest part is the time lapse of the powder coat drying. Super cool.
Enjoyed the cameo by "Hoover" the super floof.
I had one of those growing up, still remember it.
Honestly seeing the little cotton ball sheep in the videos makes my day better I love them
Great job as usual. Tonka toys I played with.😃
Thank you! 😀
Definitely, with all those great tools; Any restoration is a real pleasure!
Those toys ran on the greatest energy of all - imagination. My late father was, for a long time, a civil engineer, and so, my kid brother and I were given Tonka toys as presents. They worked, too, just like the machines my father was in charge of. We had an area of dirt in the garden that we could do what we liked with. Our Tonka toys, a few figures, and we'd play for hours, in all weathers, too. Not a care in the world. Such happy days!
I'm really impressed by that powder coat chrome.
Admiro seu trabalho é muito bom 👏👏👏
Awesome job!!! That tank in the pile is so cool!!! I hope it’s the next one!!!
❤️❤️❤️👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻
Kitty approved!!! Your restorations are most certainly in better shape than when they left the factory new!
Cheers,
Doc
Man,I wish I had one tenth of the toys we destroyed one way or another.I for one appreciate all the love shown for these rescues. Keep it up please.
Hey Chip, you really brought this one back to life. As always, nice job! 👍👍
Thanks again razorboyXVII!!!
Agreed!
This is one crazy insane restore/rebuild!
Kudos!
Such attention to detail, and love of the art of restoration! Very well done! Love your channel!!!
Bloody nice job !!! 😎👍
All your videos are so much fun to watch. Just so relaxing and satisfying. I can just imagine how long it took to make these to get each shot just perfect with everything working with each operation.
Always like what you do to these toys from my childhood, especially when you manufacture new pieces. I also get a chuckle from the little stuffed figures you have in the pieces. Keep up the good work.
Thank you for showing the sandblasting I find it oddly satisfying thank you and relaxing thank you
I watch your videos all the time. You do such WONDERFUL work all the time, and seemingly have such a wonderful disposition. I wish you all the HAPPINESS in the WORLD. Keep BEAUTIFUL.
That's an incredible restoration. Your work is outstanding.
A Great Looking Model…
Another magnificent restoration approved by the one and only Beaker! The work in those homemade tandems alone is worthy of its own video. About the only other place you’ll see these great old Tonkas looking this good is on an old episode of “Gumby.” Bravo!
It's hard to imagine it ever looked that good when it was new.
Another great restoration and a toy saved from a rusty future.
thanks for that longer blasting part
I’m all out of adjectives to praise your work, Chip! Another satisfying video of excellent and creative workmanship. Hello to Beaker the Cat!👍👍👍 ~ John
I love your videos. I am a person with incomplete quadriplegia and this is something that I would love to do, given mobility. Your videos let me experience it visually and I appreciate it
No doubt about the quality 9f restoring that Tonka truck. This reminds me a sad time. As we were 4 chidrens in the family, those trucks were too expensive at the time. So... I was finally lucky enough to play with those who had trucks like this one. It's my first time seeing that trick version coming with a front plow. It is simply awesome.
awesome restoration! I never knew they made a snowplow. Thank you for giving new life to these Awesome toys!
Uau! Belíssimo trabalho!
The before / after is really really impressive 👍
Thank you!
Даже Ангел улыбается и он когда-то был ребенком! Здоровья мастеру привет из Сибири!
Thank you Fedor Kuzmin!
You do nice work , enjoy watching these old toys become better than new again
i really like when you make the molds to create the new parts it really sets you apart from all the rest
love your content brother
I so wanted one of these when I was a kid. Never got one. Been waiting for this restoration.
Love your quality control officer after every job.
There was a lot to sort through with this one, Love it!!
A perfect way to spend a Sunday afternoon.
It is a super project, I enjoyed all the steps. Merci beaucoup Mr Chip. We still have this truck in Montréal. 😍
What a beautiful restoration! It's better than new, in my opinion. Great job! 😊
Awesome restoration by a skilled craftsman Enjoy watching you work
Such a great job as always bud. I see you got a new attachment for the CNC? Looks like a lathe chuck?
Very cool, this one would be fun to play in the snow as a kid. Or an adult lol 😆
Chip I thoroughly enjoy watching you. Your attention to detail is impeccable. There sure was a lot of parts to the snowplow. You have the best channel and content. Chip keep up the awesome work. ❤🇨🇦
Lovely work and very nicely done. Great filming and editing too. Love all the natural sounds. Thanks for sharing this.
I would be proud to drive that rig! You kept the color and restored the vibrancy of this classic. I was suprised that you did not make tires, but sometimes time wins out! I want to be on your road team!
Beautiful job. A delight to watch from beginning to end. ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
Awesome work Chip as always! I have a couple of 60s Tonka VW bugs. One is dang near mint but I would love to watch you work your magic and freshen it up. Again great work!
