Arsen Jaho, the song isnt a " rock ballad." The song is soul music. It's just how the industry marketed it. "Blue eyed soul" artists like Joe and Janis Joplin received accolades and success because they were white people who could imitate black music. Truthfully, their success is a good example of how much racism informs everything in this culture. Black vocalists were singing from a natural resonance but Janis, Joe etal pushed out a throaty gravelly tone. Culture vulture mentality always places white people into genres that are not authentic for them. Rock and Roll artists made millions while the creators of this music remained marginalized and obscure. A good example....how did Elvis become "the King" when he was simply IMITATING black performers who were much better? ( The man who started his career said .....if I could find a white man who could sing and dance like a black man I'd be a millionaire)
@@lillierobinson1786 OK you could consider this song a blue eyed soul. Its usual for Joe to sing a handful of this genre, but i couldnt say that Joe managed very well this kind of music. His voice was harsh and typical rock voice. There were at least 3 artists good in blue eyed soul: Paul Young George Michael and Hall&Oates.
This is a very special & beautiful song to me. My husband surprised me when we got married. He actually sung this song to me. I don’t care who wrote it nor who sings it. It’s a classic. Love!! Love!!❤️❤️❤️❤️
YES SIR HE REALLY KNEW WHAT HE WAS DOING AND MAGNIFICENT AND PROFESIONALLY DEAL WITH ALL THE SOMETIMES CRAZY BELT OUTS OF MIRS PATTI ANOTHER ONE WOULD HAVE LOST HES THE BEST DEFINITLY
Joe didn't give a shit, he kept time with his arms, everyone else had to follow him USUALLY, watch Jennifer Werner sing "Up where we belong" with him, she has to look at his mouth to stay in time, here Patti just dd the same damn thing to Joe, he had to watch her gyrations, LMAO, he didn't mind, he was used to it anyway.
She's great, but I've seen Joe Cocker on stage all by himself and he knocks this song out of the park - not with the style of laBelle, but with his own very unique style!!!! He kind of made the song what it became with his croaker voice and deep, yet restrained vocal control.
Sure did. You can visually see him transform. As she went higher, he followed. As she looked at him and drew out his spirit, you can see him inspired by her force and rise to the occasion. She sang to the God within him, like we all should play to the God that's within every living thing and play to the best that's in them instead of only seeing their worst. When you get to the point when they start resisting because they are daunted by doubt within them, you hold on and keep drawing it out when they can't surrender to the God that's in themselves. You saw him resisting, but she felt it and fought even harder to draw him out and locked her eyes into him to banish that doubt and jumped and flung her love at him and moved her arms in excitement like a bird flapping her arms in excitement at his soul rising to see it take flight - until they saw it in themselves too and she grabbed him and wouldn't let go. She drew him out and she looked him in the eyes with total love and heard his voice rise out of his soul instead of his lungs and his spirit rose higher and higher with the strength of aliveness and when you saw him stare back into her eyes and his spirit had come alive, he rose up and then matched her force for force and that's when you saw God enter the room and the soul rise up to the rafters and the room became transcendent and love rose up to the rafters. That's the performance I was watching We all saw and felt it change. The smiles on everyone's faces changed to a raw moment of complete love and joy of being alive. The power this woman has to plunge her entire being into a song without doubt or hesitation that she can't do it. It's complete and total surrender to faith. Most people block it by doubt, she runs toward it and surrenders completely to it without hesitation. She's a force that doesn't shy down to faith or doubt. She takes everyone with her. She has what the Spanish call Duande, where the audience, by their support, push her spirit up to another level, and as the performer, rises higher and higher to God, she takes the audience with her to meet Him. That's the most powerful association we can see in a performance. Everyone participates and has a part to play and in the end, we all become One! Powerful, powerful performance!!! This is a woman who not only has a powerful voice, but an indomitable spirit of faith, who draws God on the stage where we not only hear her voice, but we FEEL her voice. God is music and music is God and nobody fights for it better than Ms. Pattie LA Belle - a force to be reckoned with!!!! ❤😢😮😊

My mother brought me along with her to Patti Labelle concert at a time when I didn't know much about her. I wasn't a fan at all but let me tell you - when I saw this woman come on stage with just a mic in her hand pouring her heart and soul in every single note and in of her body, she instantly gained a life long fan! Her concerts are like some awe-inspiring revelation! She's earned every right to be an icon and legend!
Being so closed to the Apollo in from Brooklyn, N.Y., Tropicana, Havana, Cuba, La Princesa in Acapulco, Mex., and Caesar Palace in La Vegas, USA, for M. Ali fight. if you were not a Patti LaBelle fan, per say, from back in the day...and had lost track of her 'girl group from the 60s (the Bluebelles) and were never really a LaBelle fan from the 70s, then you probably knew very little to nothing about her solo records between 1977, right on thru the very early 80s. And it was during those years that she REALLY took her talent to another level..earning her stripes, as we say, as a solo act. And thats when my folks started taking me to her concerts whenever she came thru DC or Baltimore..her live shows during that time, were something to behold, because no one had ever seen someone sing so LOUDLY, with so much drama and skill and passion. With all due respect to the Chakas and Arethas...Patti was a one-off, because she could do things with her voice, on the fly, that you just thought were impossible. If Patti had wanted to sing opera, she would've been HUGE...if she had gotten a jump start and really trained herself to do it...because when we would go see her at Warner Theater or the Kennedy Center or Constitution Hall, my Dad would always say after her shows "I dont know if I just saw a soul singer or an opera singer" When this special was being promoted on tv..and we saw the advertisements for it.. and saw that Patti was one of the headliners, I remember my Mother saying to all of us, " we are going to watch that shit, because I know that heffa is going to show her black ass and sing somebody's shoes off!"..and thats EXACTLY what she did.
I love. Joe I cry when I listen to him , he and patti were crafted with the same soul. Power is truly I gift not handed down on this level to many. Had me crying like a baby !!!
Chill bumps within seconds. Absolutely awesome version with Billy Preston playing it his way. I think all the artists were true to themselves. It felt real.
Only woman i know that can take 5 words and make it last 5 minutes...whew😱 we miss you Joe❤ take a listen to the best is yet to come. Never heard anyone hold a note like that and live to tell about❤
So, so true this was a match I could have never imagined but somehow it crushed me. what a performance! The way the music moves through both of them is just amazing to watch !
It was a gift to see Patti LaBelle live in concert never got to see Joe Cocker though I was really sad my dad grew up with Joe Cocker and recently passed away of the coronavirus thanks Trump card you got a lot of blood 🩸 on your hands you’ll rotten hell
THAT IS WHAT YOU CALL BRINGING IT. When I hear folks say some of these talentless acts nowadays “brought it,” I refer them to this clip. This is the epitome of Bringing It and in less than 4 minutes!!!!!!!
Patti returned to the Apollo filled with the Holy Ghost ... she killed every number she was in ... including the ending number when Diana was supposed to be leading "I Want to Know What Love Is" lol
Hahaha I remember that! And after whispering I Want to Know What Love Is, she didn't want to give Patti the mic. And after Patti took over with the power vocals, Diana made someone get her another mic. Looked like she was lip syncing. Lol And miss Patti don't need no mic NOHOW!
I feel like shoutin every time I here this. Miss P lays it down! Love Joe cocker too. Classic!!! OMG I forgot to mention my undying love for the one and the only Mr. Billy Preston!!!
Still a Beautiful song! This song gets to your core. Blessing to Joe Cocker. Patti Labelle & Billy Preston. Joe Cocker & Billy Preston rest in peace. LOVE LOVE
I thank God for living to see such beauty and masterpiece in the voice of these music icons, not to mention the geniality of Billy Preston. Simply stupendous
Have mercy patti did a lot in that moment she sang she danced she preached she kissed the pianist she was possessed she played she fought war omy gosh! She's everything. 😍 😍 😍
One of the things that's often missed in this performance is Joe's quiet and soulful adlibs where you think "Damn, did he visit a black baptist church on Sundays."
..and more importantly, HE KNEW where to put the ad libs...you cant be up there talking about how beautiful she is, and then out of nowhere, you go into "the hills are alive, with the sound of mu-siccccc!"...Joe was one of those singers that immersed himself in black music and observed from the greats like Charles, Redding and Cooke, what and how to sing, to connect with the listener...and it wasnt a put-on...he knew the subtleties of the ad libs, you mention. Joe was a VERY legit, soul-singer. I miss the guy.
Patti is the ultimate show,, she is a team leader,, makes everybody SHINE,,,I love Mr. Joe C. His voice was so unusual, but with plenty of soul, and pure to me,,,,
I’m so glad this performance by Patti Labelle & the late Joe Cocker is posted on RUclips. I remember this show so well. This is what made me a fan of Patti Labelle. I would go on & see her in many concerts throughout the years 💖💖💖
This performance and the Song You will never Walk alone made a Patti Fan....There is no other Artist that has so much originality in there heart and soul...She is a American Treasure...No one can show her out in the music business. When you ask her to Sing she brings all that she has!!
I do not care how many times I watch this… A superior performance like this never gets old.
Y'all Better Sing Love it
I AGREE EACH TIME I PLAY IT I THANK GOD FOR THEIR TALENT
BRILLIANT DUET OF SUCH CONTRASTING SINGING STYES❤❤ MUSIC 🎷🎶

Definitely a soul stirring performance. Each of them really put their hearts and souls into their music. Three legends

Rodney Medlin Billy Preston wrote & recorded the song originally but Joe's version 💖

Powerful performance!
I agree💕🙏🤗❤️
THAT IS WHAT YOU CALL BRINGING IT. When I hear folks say some of these talentless acts nowadays “brought it,” I refer them to this clip. This is the epitome of Bringing It and in less than 4 minutes!!!!!!!
Patti returned to the Apollo filled with the Holy Ghost ... she killed every number she was in ... including the ending number when Diana was supposed to be leading "I Want to Know What Love Is" lol
PAY BACK FOR ALL THE DIRT, THAT DIANA DID TO HER, BACK IN THE DAY. SHE SLAYED HER.
@@babd7176 She made clear for everyone that SHE, not Miss Ross, was the star of that stage, honey!
@@angelawilliams0428 Yes, ma'am -- Patti reduced anybody that stood on a stage with her that night to being background lol
love it
I love Patti!!!!!!! always excited to hear and see her performances. A global treasure and living legend!!!!!! ❤️ Just WOW!!!!!!!!
She was phenomenal in the 80's.Same with Jennifer Holiday.

Billy Preston was the only musician to be on the payroll for both The Beatles and The Rolling Stones. Now you know!
This gave me chills... love you Billy, Patti and Joe... Wow!
Effortless BELTING, them vocals and that energy.........NOBODY! THEE QUEEN!!!!

PATTI given life to everybody! Amazing performance!! 💜
That Patti entrance just pushed Joe to a whole new level. Two of the best vocals.
I thank God for living to see such beauty and masterpiece in the voice of these music icons, not to mention the geniality of Billy Preston. Simply stupendous
I love this every time I watch!! Classic!! RIP Joe Cocker & Billy Preston. Patti Labelle is SIMPLY MARVELOUS!!
Have mercy patti did a lot in that moment she sang she danced she preached she kissed the pianist she was possessed she played she fought war omy gosh! She's everything.
😍 😍 😍
70's music fantastic how refreshing to watch this!!!!
Billy, Joe and Patti took us all on a trip to Jupiter and back!
One of the things that's often missed in this performance is Joe's quiet and soulful adlibs where you think "Damn, did he visit a black baptist church on Sundays."
My being a fan I thought 4:19-4:21 was so strong
He grew up listening to ray Charles
..and more importantly, HE KNEW where to put the ad libs...you cant be up there talking about how beautiful she is, and then out of nowhere, you go into "the hills are alive, with the sound of mu-siccccc!"...Joe was one of those singers that immersed himself in black music and observed from the greats like Charles, Redding and Cooke, what and how to sing, to connect with the listener...and it wasnt a put-on...he knew the subtleties of the ad libs, you mention. Joe was a VERY legit, soul-singer. I miss the guy.
Lmmfao, smmfh very well said and so True.!!🎼🎤🎶👍
true but lets leave race out of it
I’m 40 years old and I swear on my life I remember this performance among the many great one that night patti was in rare form!!! Classic
Beautiful performance. Patti did her thing and Joe and Billie did there's and it was beautiful.
She sung the eff outta that song! God bless them all, fantastic performance!
Patti is the ultimate show,, she is a team leader,, makes everybody SHINE,,,I love Mr. Joe C. His voice was so unusual, but with plenty of soul, and pure to me,,,,
If you can hang with Patti - you got it going on!!!
For me she alittle just alittle to much. Got to love her.

Let's not forget Billy Preston. He was ultra talented, may he R.I.P.
What a magical performance. 👏
This is not singing, it's beyond and above, it's soulfood and glorious riches unknown, Wow it's Beautiful 💯👌
REMEMBERING JOHN ROBERT "JOE" CROCKER (MAY 20, 1944 - DECEMBER 22, 2014) [12/22/2017]

I’m so glad this performance by Patti Labelle & the late Joe Cocker is posted on RUclips. I remember this show so well. This is what made me a fan of Patti Labelle. I would go on & see her in many concerts throughout the years 💖💖💖
Just gives me chills, listening to Joe Cocker. He was my favorite male singer ever.
I love this song nice memories good performance. How are you Linda ?
Mine, too!
Billy Preston was a force of nature. His happiness was almost palpable.
Two completely different artist yet respected each others talents on stage. Beautiful music!
J. Dale Smith that's right
SHE CREAMED HIS BUTT
👊👏
They were not that different.. they were both screamers!
@@LifeJourneyful It’s a competition? I thought she laid it on way too thick. They’re supposed to be singing together.
I love how Joe knew instinctively to get in where he fit in on his own song. That was amazing!
it's Billy's song anyways
I don't know what performance you watched, Patti damn near gave that man a stroke. 🤣🤣
It really was man !
Thios song never made me emotional
Until I saw this version !
Exactly
Her singing totally overwhelmed poor Joe Cocker....
This performance and the Song You will never Walk alone made a Patti Fan....There is no other Artist that has so much originality in there heart and soul...She is a American Treasure...No one can show her out in the music business. When you ask her to Sing she brings all that she has!!
When Music knew no bounds but touched everyone all the time .
