How do you set the saddle / handlebar distance given a selle bike fit references the ‘brp’? Did you buy a special tool? I’d have bought one of these but couldn’t work the website models out at all. I figured you had to know in advance which model was which before even starting. So I bought an Aethos instead.

Hi Ollie, I like the idea of easier climbing using a lightweight bike, I’m 105kg, what set up would you recommend to get my bike weight down to, say, minus 35kg? 😂
On high end bikes you spend thousands of dollars to safe a few kgs. If you aren’t a millionaire you should try loosing weight wich means eating less wich means saving kgs and money 😮😮😮😮
Met an older guy on a brand new orbea electric mountain bike the other day. He was new to biking and was telling me how good the dealer had been to him. Out of the 14 issues I found with his brand new bike, the only one I had the heart to tell him about was the “orbea” dealer putting is forks on back to front.
Few dozen grams of mud on those tires too! In all seriousness though, I really appreciate what GCN is doing to shift the mindset away from UCI spec cycling. I wish the major brands would be more open to offering high-performance NON-UCI spec mass-produced equipment.
Just lovely! The bike looks amazing but the thing I like the most is the gearing you opted for 52/36 and 11/34, it gives more chain efficiency and low enough gear ratio for any climb you would wish to tackle.

I think Aero for people who just ride for pleasure and no competition (like me) is not useful. Yes it's sexy to have super aero bike and deep section carbon wheels but do you really need it?? Great video Ollie. If I was in the market for a new carbon frame, the new Orca has been my first choice since it came out. Looking at the closeups of the bike, it looks like most, if not all, of the components are second hand. Even the frame seems to be second hand, as you said that the logo color wasn't of your choosing. If that's the case, it's really nice that you're repurposing and showcasing a bike and spare parts that maybe you just had around the office. Please let me know if that's the case. Cheers! You may be right about it being a used bike. Seth from Berm Peak explained that when new products are launched, the manufacturer sends samples for review and after one company reviews them they are sent to another one down a chain of reviewers. It is possible that this exact bike may have been reviewed in the main channel before, or by some other channel/magazine.

Your comments about using shorter cranks (170mm vs 172mm) seem a little silly. That’s a pretty tiny adjustment you could get by moving your cleats or wearing thicker socks! I recently had to replace mine with 145mm cranks after having knee replacement surgery last year, and because I’m a shorter guy and should have been using them anyway. I’m using Appleman cranks that Alex mentioned on the Tech Show last year. You should do a video studying crank lengths. Appleman makes them from 135mm to 170mm. So mine about an inch shorter and make for much more comfortable riding with no noticeable loss in power.

The choice of shorter crank arms perplexes me given that the bike is optimized toward hill climbing. For a bike optimized for hill climbing, I would expect that longer cranks would have the advantage over shorter cranks in providing greater leverage. For a bike optimized for aerodynamics, I would expect shorter cranks would have the advantage since the hip angles would be increased, which would allow a more aerodynamic rider position though the rider would be marginally higher on the bike.
I’m 50+ and went from 172.5 to 170 mm cranks. I feel there’s less stress on my knees. I spin a little quicker going up hills and surprisingly I actually go up slightly quicker. Don’t ask me to explain the science behind it, but it works for me.
GCN 2011 - this is my bike, which I actually raced with when I was a Pro rider, and has history & tells a story. GCN 2023 - this is "my" bike, which is actually on loan from the company, who told me to say good things about it.
i'm very happy for you, he's very light but just one thing, is the tubolito, he could be a lot of issue. So if you want a very good compromise use Michelin Ultra light tube, it's only 82 grammes and more strongest!
Man Ollie hits the nail on the head in this one. Lightweight bikes feel better everyday, and it's true nobody cares about flat segments. Climbs are the pinnacle of cycling. Most new $10,000+ bikes come in at 7.5-8.5lg, which feels like garbage.
I also want an Orbea. Too bad someone got the Orbea Avant displayed at my local bike shop ahead of me. Haha. For months i have been looking at that bike whenever i drop by. 😂
I agree with the 34t i dont get the 30t.. same happens on MTB's. Gearing is not enough. Most moden mtb bikes come with a 32t front ring. I think it should be 28t
This the road version of a xc hardtail light and quick uphill just like a xc hardtail is offroad the rear end reminds me of my 2021 Orbea Alma M30 same shape.
I went 0 layback as looking to swap carbon seatpost and axs dropper but want both same, for axs not seen layback My £4k bike is 6.7kg with pedals and power meter too, if wanted could make 6.5kg with thm crankset
I think Ollie has secretly reveled that he might be riding a bit more than the Taiwan KOM.... I wonder if there might be some hill climb races to come....something tells me that lightweight bike = hill climbs ahoy! Really cool bike would be really interested to hear how you find it at the Taiwan KOM.. I know that Si and Matt had some very tricked out riggs for that.
Just for reference, can you give us the measurements of the bike and Ollie? (like inseam) Did you need a special adapter to mount the Shimano rings to the SRAM cranks? I would have chosen a brighter colour for bike and hoodie (the camera person might agree 🙃)
@martingutierrez694 I was not aware of that. The only one I knew with Shimano 4-bolt was Rotor. (And of course everything that uses a Shimano crankset)
How could you Ollie?! After so much effort you made with Alex to convince everyone, including me, that aero bikes are superior to light-weight bikes, now you choose the last one? That can't be... 😉
Nice video! There's a lot of talk about aero vs lightweight. Can GCN do a video of real-world aero? For example: what are the aero penalties after adding a bell, Garmin mount, handlebar racenumber and saddlebag? All stuff that normal people would add when they ride Maratona or Haute Route. #askGCNtech Maybe switching from butyl to latex inner tubes is a bigger gain during a GF than buying the SL8 aero handlebar (4 watts gain).
When I met some UCI people in Wollongong last year , it became apparent to me that their thinking is outdated and not industry trend embracing . They are holding manufacturers back to some degree .

I agree with the 34t i dont get the 30t.. same happens on MTB's. Gearing is not enough. Most moden mtb bikes come with a 32t front ring. I think it should be 28t
I would love to see Ollie challenge Andrew climbing on that bike. ❤
I don't think Ollie would have a chance whatever bike he's on 😂
I think Ollie would have a chance if Andrew were to ride a cheap e-bike... with a dead battery.
Round bars are good instead of aero bar lightweight over aero. Who is this and what have you done with Ollie?
Looks like a Tubolito tube on the front but not the rear? Any reason for that?
It's still how fit the rider is and a good coaching
This the road version of a xc hardtail light and quick uphill just like a xc hardtail is offroad the rear end reminds me of my 2021 Orbea Alma M30 same shape.
wow this weight knocks the tarmac into the long grass! good job :)
Just in time to put it on the indoor trainer for winter ❤😂
😂
Did you mention the framesize you are using? Maybe I wasnt listening but didn’t here it?
What tire pressure? Does the use of TPU tubes change the recommended tire pressure?
No.
I went 0 layback as looking to swap carbon seatpost and axs dropper but want both same, for axs not seen layback
My £4k bike is 6.7kg with pedals and power meter too, if wanted could make 6.5kg with thm crankset
Classic geometry. Cannondale SSE 1 and 2 now are part of it. Retro modern are this and Aethos
Love this, and the honesty re. sponsorship
What’s the QC like at their chinese manufacturers? Also lightweight = less robust.
Forget 11-34 I got a 11-42 on my Cervelo soloist great for climbing
Just for reference, can you give us the measurements of the bike and Ollie? (like inseam) Did you need a special adapter to mount the Shimano rings to the SRAM cranks? I would have chosen a brighter colour for bike and hoodie (the camera person might agree 🙃)
@martingutierrez694 I was not aware of that. The only one I knew with Shimano 4-bolt was Rotor. (And of course everything that uses a Shimano crankset)
I run 11 spd dura ace rings on my ultegra 12 speed with the same quarq dfour, works like a dream
6.74kg... but your arm was shaking when you are lifting it! Nice bike :)
Proper climber biceps there 😅
i mean its not the most stable weight is it
He's a cyclist, what do you expect 😉
@@gcntech 🤣
How could you Ollie?! After so much effort you made with Alex to convince everyone, including me, that aero bikes are superior to light-weight bikes, now you choose the last one? That can't be... 😉
Excellent. Helpful.😊
What TPU tubes do you use?
Health to enjoy Ollie I’d personally prefer light over aero but a mix is probably best ie a tarmac sl8 or supersix or TCR 👍 bit of both
Which one would you go for?
@@gcntech I’ve a tcr can’t fault it at all
Beautiful bike.... I knew it was light when Ollie barely held it up with one hand..... 😀
Beautiful bike…but I have to rate it as only “nice” because of the mismatched tubes -Tubolito/orange front, black/Pirelli Smartube(?) rear. 😉
Such a harsh critic!
Nice video! There's a lot of talk about aero vs lightweight. Can GCN do a video of real-world aero? For example: what are the aero penalties after adding a bell, Garmin mount, handlebar racenumber and saddlebag? All stuff that normal people would add when they ride Maratona or Haute Route. #askGCNtech
Maybe switching from butyl to latex inner tubes is a bigger gain during a GF than buying the SL8 aero handlebar (4 watts gain).
One for the future perhaps!
Does it come in Rim brake?
Why are the valve stems two different colors?! One new Tubolito and one older one to test the diff?
Enjoy the new ride Ollie! Very nice ride.
I've always disliked modern lowered seat stays. I hope more bikes bring the raised stays back.
When I met some UCI people in Wollongong last year , it became apparent to me that their thinking is outdated and not industry trend embracing . They are holding manufacturers back to some degree .
Guys. Come on, you used to love this channel. There are other bikes.
why I've gone for lightweight over aero - Sponsors, sponsors everywhere
Ollie had the choice of the Orca or the Orca Aero but went for the lightweight option!
@@gcntech That wouldn't have made for showing off the new bike that Orbea has just released though.
I thought 7.2kg! Under 7kg with pedals, bottle cages & power meter is crazy light! No modifications either!
