Why You SHOULDN'T Buy The Cheapest BMW Motorcycle From Auction!

- I bought a cheap BMW motorcycle from an auction and its not smooth sailing to say the least. I do some talking. Some wrenching. Think about ice cream. Ponder the universe. breathe occasionally. The usual.
I've got the exact same bike. At first I thought this vid was going to be a bit goofy, but I was wrong. You are the best thing that ever happened to this bike. you are taking very good care of her!
Ayo! Thank you! The bike is going to get used and abused off road though, as it was intended!
Sitting on toilet for this one
Only place this video should be viewed🍦
hows the hemorrhoids?
Same
You got this bro 💪🏻 we are all in this together
Better be on the clock too!
Im sat here like "hah, look at the horrible job this guy has to do to his BMW" while secretly knowing I have to do it myself soon...
Fly me out I will do it for you 👀👏
I dont usually comment, but you have very relaxing rhythm on these. Love the music also! Keep up the great work!
Cheers from Finland!
Thank you very much! I’m thankful you got to view the video!
Gs1300 owner from across the big water. Came across your channel by chance and have really enjoyed watching your work on this bike. You have a new subscriber right here.
That's awesome I would love to ride one! I'm glad to have you here!
Loving it, can't wait to see it get back into the wild again, it's a crazy feeling buying the cheapest bike around, fixing it, then riding really far and for years to come, it's so rewarding.
Yeah it’s one of my favorite things to do. Resurrect old, forgotten, or undesirable pieces of machinery. I have saved lots of stuff from scrap yards over the years
can't wait for the new mods from temu & aliexpress :)
Very soon!👀
Excellent video mate...i just bought a 2006 GS with 30,000 kilometers ( 14,000miles) on it; i had an '04 that i stupidly sold a few years ago and have missed it greatly; happy days ahead.
Thanks! That's fantastic news that your back on one! I think its going to be hard to get a different bike after this! Thanks for watching!
@@AgatasKatkus i wont be selling this one until i can no longer throw a leg over it; even then i might just retire it to the loungeroom; they're a bike that to continue grow on ya as you discover more about just how capable they really are.
@@markhills3922I ride a 2006 R1200GS. I traded a Harley for it 4 years ago and never looked back. Luckily, there was nothing wrong with the Bike. I did wire in a Switch so I could have a Running light headlight. Are these supposed to have a running light on low Beam ? The Bulb was good but didn’t turn on when I started it? If you could let me know if it’s supposed to have one, I would really appreciate it.
Thanks
@@joeybobbie1 Yes, the Headlight is supposed to be on Permanently; Maybe someone made it so it doesn't come on automatically as soon as you turn the key as some say it drains the battery on start up which does make sense.
I like your style brother. Best wishes from the land of your GS.
Thank you brother! Wishing you the best for no matter where your life is at currently🦦
There are not many videos out there on BMWs like this one. I love BMWs but I'm very disappointed in their recent change to service manuals. They now only sell manuals to dealer franchises. You used to be able to purchase them as a service tech. Now you can't. My shop specializes in BMWs. The local dealer turns customers away. We get them, which is good, but we can't get data on new models. You are doing a great job. Keep it up. I liked and subscribed
I agree! Mine is an 05, easy to work on. Newer ones are cool but if you want a GS 1250-1300 you first better have a BMW GS income $$$$$! 🤣
I feel your pain! It’s not even just BMW. All manufacturers are moving towards that point and it suck’s. The right to repair is slowly getting taken away from us☹️
Or maybe if this channel grows enough I can buy a wrecked one from auction👀
My last BMW was an 89 R80 GS. So easy to work on, yet so infrequently. Apart from general maintenance, all I had to replace in 20 years was a starter motor and a joint onvthe driveshaft. Not even a cable let me down.
I have to say. I do enjoy the music choices in your vids. Merci.
Glad you like them! Thanks for watching!
This channel is really underrated, the quality of the content is great
Appreciate your kind words! I only want to get better too🙏
Great vid, Should have taken out that POS ABS pump while you were in there, it will let you down at some point, hope you get your subs bud. (you got a Kurt Russell vib going on there 😉)
When I had everything apart it had a sticker on it from a place that rebuilds them so I think I will be good for a while! Idk who Kurt Russel is but will check them out!
Keep at it! Both hilarious and educational, much appreciated! Best regards from Sweden
Thanks for watching!🐬
Damn, I love these! You pace the videos just right and the commentary is perfect. Keep going, your channel is going to blow up! You'll get your Insta 360 !
Appreciate the love! Glad to have you here, and I've been on the lookout for used insta360s on Facebook👀
I kept reading the comments with thumb 👍🏻...😊

Greetings from kingdom of Saudi Arabia 🇸🇦💐
Ah salaam alaikum. I love that there are people from all over coming together over an old BMW motorcycle. Its so cool 🎉
I could do that disassembly stuff no problem- getting it back together again now that's a whole different story.
I don't blame you! If I don't stay organized when disassembling I will have a rough day lol
Every BMW motorcycle listing is like 220000 miles love the dedication these homies have
BMW is a lifestyle lol
Why do you not have 40k subs?! Such a funny delivery!
Maybe one day! Glad you enjoyed it!
those auxiliary lights look funky, havent seen those ever, interesting
Yeah they are well made but not with good taste lol
Have no doubt that you will be known and your work will be greeted soon. You are smart and hard working and that day do not forget to continue with challenging jobs. Good luck from your new follower 😊
Very grateful to have you here as a follower🎉
Amazing content brother.. you're gonna blow up on YT!
Thank you! Appreciate you watching🎉
I have owned 7x BMW cars but yours is the machine I have always wanted and, at the price you paid, it wouldn't have to run - just look good. Keep the videos coming please.
Right on! BMWs are about as addicting as any drug out there!
Subscribed, as I am working on the exact same bike here in GA. Same color combo as well, except my auction Nike needs front plastics replaced. Love the video, and it's great to see you go through the bike so thoroughly. I noticed the rear driveline lube check while flushing the diff fluid.
Thanks for the sub! Nice to hear I’m not the only one with one of these from auction🎉 I’m planning on taking a big trip with it so I’m trying to check off as many things as I can before I leave 😥
The best BMW clutch and seal swap vid on the net. The others take 90 minutes to get the bike apart. I love your tenacity too. I've lost count how many Harley projects I've got thru something similar with. Maybe I'll try a BMW next.
Appreciate that! Nothings really that bad when you break it down into enough steps🐬 I highly recommend starting with an older r series or my personal favorite a k75 or k100.
Oh my God! Tearing it apart is one thing, putting it back together is another. You have the skills Buddy! Regards from Berlin, where your Bike was born😜
We will see if it falls apart 😥 thanks for watching, it’s a pleasure having you here 🫡
Most excellent spanner skills there !! Well done . Most of us would have had to pay £1500 to get that done !! Subscribed

I have the same one! A yellow r1200gs, mine is from 2004 and almost at 100000km. Still the first clutch, but it eats rear brake pads and the rear brake rotor was replaced at 80000km. And last but not least, the abs and power brakes stop working when the bike has been parked outside in heavy rain, but after a couple km when the bike has heated up, they work again after a restart. It´s a real workhorse, love it
Great to hear! I cant wait to start racking up miles with it instead of working on it!
Excellent tear down. And congrats that finally the videos are picked up by the shady algorithm. Well earned success!
Thanks for being an OG🙏 If I ever get merch or something I will hook it up. I promise🏄♂️
Thanks man, I'll take a Cougarbaker sticker 😁
Great video. I ride an old GS from 1987 and can't believe how many bits and pieces your bike is made of.
Please check the spider that holds the rear wheel, especially if it's still the alloy one. Here in Germany BMW had to call thousands of bikes back into the shops and replace the spider with one made of steel. If yours shows cracks replace it as well. And if not always use the torque wrench because too much Nm on the wheel bolts lets it crack.
And then enjoy your new ride, mate!
Thanks for the info! You have an incredible bike! Maybe I can pick one up cheap some day👀
I am not a biker at all, but I like your style of content. Subscribed to get you closer to an action cam. 🎉
Awesome, thank you! One day it will happen just gotta keep putting the work in🎉
Loving the channel and the sweet resto of the gs. Just upgraded from my 2005….. she was a babe
Thanks for being here! What did you upgrade to?
Got to love the GS! Awesome work resurrecting the nugget!

I also have a 120gs that i converted both turn signals on left handlebar with a Yamaha unit.
Great bikes.
That sounds like an awesome mod, what bike did the Yamaha unit come off of?

But i gues you can use controls from any bike.
Just some soldering to be done.
As i couldn't stand the BMW turn signals model😒

Thanks! That’s so cool! All because of a very broken BMW lol. I would love to visit one day🙏
Loving the content thanks for sharing watching from Melbourne Australia

Great content, I enjoyed watching this.
Thank you! Glad you enjoyed it! that's all that matters🏄♂️
I work at BMW and the old 1200 engines always go bad at the crank/gearbox seal after some years, but it's at least somewhat fixable without specialty tools
I had no signs of leakage from gearbox. I would've liked to and eventually will replace them though! I don't have big youtuber money :(
Should replace the gearbox seals too.also check any recalls on this bike, especially the rear wheel flange.to correctly do vacuum, you need a diag to close the idle valves,or else they interfere in your readings.also every time you do valves is a good practice to also check rocker arm clearance.overall, pretty good 👍
Thanks for the info!
@@AgatasKatkus happy to help.was a BMW tech when these came out, used to work on them all day

With a Little Bit of care on the plastics this bike will look like new! And maybe I would remove those foglights. Subscribed

When you have the drive shaft out of a BMW motorcycle be sure to check that the u-joints are in phase (lined up). The rubber type cush that BMW uses in the drive shaft tends to deform and the u-joint get out of phase. When this happens, it put stress on the u-joints causing rapid wear. Bad things happen when the u-joint come apart. I have seen many failures of BMW drive shafts; the worst was that the output shaft on the transmission sheared off.
Yes sir! I checked it once I had it out and it felt like it was still in good shape. If it fails I’ve looked into some of the aftermarket options that are serviceable.
Sheared output shaft is bonkers lol
I had the same, even same color. Bought it used for 2200, drove it from 60,000 to 100,000 km. Two things broke. One soldering point in the Ignition lock, and the starter got stuck on a trip in the Alps south Austria. I drove that thing home 18000km ( 1000mls) in one day without shutting the engine down , when refueling.Got there just in time, to see the Championsligue final at 8 pm. Average speed including refueling stops 160kmh or 100mph.
Holy moly! That sounds like a hell of a ride🏍️ great to hear that even with some issues you made it home. Gives me more faith for doing a very long trip🦑
Were you a BMW Motorcycle Mechanic before you bought this Bike??? Man you are a Pro at working on these.
I started working on my own stuff, then worked in a couple small shops for a bit, then started doing my own thing. With a heavy focus in BMW automobiles. The knowledge transfers over to the bikes for the most part lol. I appreciate you!
Outstanding video first time viewer and subbed cant wait for your next install on the up grades 😀
Awesome to hear! Thanks for the sub!
Great work, both on the bike and the video production! Hope you get that insta360 (or a wireless mic) soon 👍
Thank you! your comment gets me one step closer to that insta360 🙏 i hope at least lol.
Keep the fixing bike vids going dude. 👌 👍👍
I really enjoy your vids. 👍
Glad you like them! Don’t worry I love buying really broken junk lol
all best for the rest of the work on this bike,
Thanks! I need all the wishes I can get lol
Amazing video man!! Can´t wait for this build
Thanks! We will see how the cheap Chinese stuff turns out😥
Man, I admire you being so handy ! I have the 2010 version & only know how to fill up the fuel tank. Did you replace the fuel filter inside the tank with an outside easy-to-reach unit ?
I believe anyone could do it with the right knowledge, attitude, and guidance! Essentially I drilled out the built in filter inside of the housing, and then added an external one outside of the tank to make it serviceable!
Newly subscribed, best wishes from 🇬🇧 / 🇱🇹
Thank you!🎉
This is amazing man, thank you for sharing. I just found your channel for the first video about this bike, how did you come to know so much about these GS's?
Glad you came across it! I've worked on a lot of stuff (Bikes and Cars) and that knowledge transfers over to a lot of things. This is actually my first time ever touching one of these bikes!
Very fulfilling restoration video
Glad you liked it!🐬
I look forward to seeing the Temu and AliExpress accessories video
Glad to hear it! Some of the stuff surprised me honestly
Fun videos, you got something, keep at it! Moving to the US in three months going to bag me a cheap 1150 and refresh it.
Glad you enjoyed it! Exciting stuff, I think I would've preferred one of those at this point lol. Parts and maintenance is cheaper for sure

Keep it up man it will be a nice bike over time
Will do! We will see how nice knock off parts can be lol
Sweet videos. I'm loving the series
Thanks! I appreciate your support!
Nice video. I don't even have a gs but I have taken those engines apart and split the bike. That's were friends come in handy.
Thanks! An extra set of hands would’ve made life much easier😥
Hi, nice vid! I hope and suppose that the front belt replacement procedure is doable without the dedicated tool.. I'm doin it in a couple of weeks. Cheers from Italy!
Thanks! I’ve seen people tap the holes on the pulley and put in a bolt which will retain the belt as you turn. Or you can get a universal stretch belt installation tool. I have several but I believe the one I used in the video was like $15.
Near that plastic fitting you broke, there's a metal thing with cooling fins, it's called a fuel pump regulator, those things are notorious for going bad sitting in that tank recess, water gets inside , so if the bike doesnt start one day, it could be the culprit
Thanks for the info!
@@AgatasKatkus you welcome, keep up the good work, waiting for the mods vid!

Amazing, you tear the B'mer in two and I can't fix my bike's f* carburetor. Good job man.
You can do it! I used to not know how to tear a carb apart either but with perseverance and a couple screw ups I got it down🎉
Great work, those GS are easy to work on. Do you hv the BMW RSD for the repair and motoscan for diagnostic?
I actually found a service manual pdf online for free and haven’t needed a scanner just yet. I’m trying to find a gs911 used though to make things easier👏
@@AgatasKatkus I am using Motoscan android apps with obd dongle, for older beemer around before 2017 you will need an adapter. This apps will do what gs911 can do and unlimited number of bike. All item probably cost around US200

Hope you replaced the trans seals too. The input shaft and slave cylinder rod seals are leakers too.
They had no signs of leakage at this time but down the line I will. I don’t mind tearing this apart🦑
I enjoyed your last video. This one I didn't like because I went in with the wrong expectation because of the arguably clickbait thumbnail.
I know right? If I had been a subscriber,I would have unsubbed at this point.
@@ClaudeSac that would be a bit much for me. The motorbike is split like promised. Just not in the way I expected 🤷♂️
Sorry to hear that! It’s hard to bring viewers in without being a little “clickbaity”. It’s just how the RUclips algorithm is and I’m just trying to figure the system out. Appreciate your feedback!
That’s no fun!🦑
Err, why was this clickbait? He split it in two, no?!?
Good job! Those are the 'ADVENTURE' rated fittings that BMW denied to provide you with as a factory standard. Nice of you to show them what it should have been. And NO, the reason they broke is NOT because of you, BMW should have made those in brass not in plastic. This is a poor reflection of their globally assumed quality standards. Don't get me wrong, the bike is fine and dandy, some things could've just have been a bit more 'engineering' friendly.
The BREAK line uses Dot 4 brake fluid. At least on my K25 from 2006. Never had to replace the CLUTCH oil though. I asked my mechanic about the end drive oil change. He told me that they are maintenance free since they are sealed and as far as I understood it, shouldn't be tampered with and kept sealed.
I've seen a lot of YT content creators service those (with molybdenum grease and nothing else), can you elaborate on what you did exactly, how it looked and what your thoughts are regarding servicing and re-lubricating that rear end drive shaft? After opening it up, was it necessary or was it something you probably should have not done assuming it had around 34000 miles?
Last but not least, hopefully you still have some raw footage left of your work on this GS and it would really help the many tinkering enthusiasts who still own one of these. Notably how you rebuilt and re-engineered the fuel filter system, and how you managed to service the throttle body for example. Might be good food for a new video series on your favorite bike which would get plenty of views in the long run.
I subscribed to your channel. Keep at it.
I really love BMW's but it does suck to take apart some of the newer stuff as it wasn't built to last and its mainly because everything that was once metal has been replaced by plastic.
As far as the final drive drive fluid, like many things BMW puts a lifetime stamp on it. Which is a broad term. After almost 20 years that fluid has probably degraded to some extent so I opted to change it. There are many good videos about servicing the final drive oil on YT.
As far as the fuel filter add on, I will post a link in the description of a detailed forum post where I got my information from.
Thanks for watching!

I had the same issue with the alternator belt too on my RT, "Elastic'' mast be on the belt even it's correct size
Yeah lots of new vehicles use the stretch to fit belts. I was off by 10mm lol
Everyone is obsessed with torque settings. Probably with a less than accurate, non calibrated torque wrench.
Yeah that’s facts. At the end of the day people just want to do things right and have a passion🦑
Watching the time-lapse of you struggling to get the two halves back together hurt my heart! Put a strap, or even a rubber band on the front brake lever. It'll help a lot.
Where was this big brain when I needed it😭
