Can't get over how awesome the frame and the cab is. Absolutely worth $3000. Like how complete your explanations are of what and why you are doing each repair. This truck will be as good as new and very dependable. Jolly Green has found a very good owner.

great seeing grandpa climbing in there! when i find diffs that have that sludge in them, i drain it, put some diesel back in and run it with the rears off the ground to clean it out. wish you were closer....i have lots of parts you could use that i wont use. be careful ordering the ebay stuff if it isnt o.e. quality. it sure can make you chase your tale with running problems. that water separater would likely have been a problem later. any diesel can run away....all it takes is any un-metered burnable fuel to be introduced into the intake. the fitting you took off the pump is a quick connect pressure test coupler. just remember, the gear oil always looks better at the top fill hole than the bottom where all the crud accumulates. ezrider is a great guy with loads of good information.

I have a frieght liner cab over with a big cam 3 ,and it did run away lucky for me the turbo locked up and only burned up about 3 gallons of oil and saved my engine. I put a ball valve on the feed line to the turbo in case this ever happens again!

    • @benmac940
      @benmac940 2 года назад

Totally agree as soon as I saw the racor I was thinking change it. And I was thinking flush the diffs with diesel, wasn't sure whether that provided enough lubrication to actually run them though.

i think you got a pretty good deal on the truck, pretty much any truck that's mostly complete will part out for well over 5k so it seems prices normally bottom out around there in my area. but yeah big truck parts are expensive and they don't like to sit around. good to see it move again, kind of a bummer on the rear end ill be curious to see what you find when you get it apart. but seems be be a solid start on your project. glad your enjoying my channel as well.

Both of those differentials need flushing, not just spill & fill.
Jack up & securely stand. Drain completely.
Refill with kerosene + conventional ATF, 1 gallon each.
Run in FWD & REV a minimum of 20 minutes each direction.
Drain while hot, allow to drip an hour.
It's either flush or remove covers.

I'm from the other side the pond. We do have "flat front" trucks like MAN, DAF, SCANIA, IVECO, VOLVO, etc. these are all modern brands / vehicle - work horses. When I see all the US made Cab-overs (you name them) from the past - Paterbuilt-s, Freightliners, Internationals, I get goose bumps. They're so cool looking. And that pale colors - green, blue, yellow, orange... Amazing!!!

You got yourself a very nice truck and a great deal! I love cabovers!
The battery setup on most of those old trucks is 1 battery is for starting and the other 2 are for keeping the marker lights on at night when the driver is sleeping. I'm a 3rd generation trucker and the old days drivers only ran the truck overnight for the heater. The ac at night was run only when it was really hot. Most comfortable nights the fans where good enough.
Owners used to make sure of good clean connections and clean grounds. 1 starter battery and 2 auxiliary batteries were common and worked perfectly when maintained.

(Not that you'll take my word for it after your remarks about Cummins engines running away. . . .) but, that pin in the side of the top cover works in conjunction with that air valve that was stuck. What that does is keeps the transmission from shifting from low to high, or high to low while you're in gear by blocking the air going to the back half of the trans. Most truckers, while driving in gear, would move the air shift on the gearshift from low to high while it's in gear, and then shift. When the shift linkage would go into neutral, the pin would move and allow that valve to send air back to the piston on the back half of the trans to move and shift from low-range to high. (the old way to make sure a trans was in neutral was to move the shift button, and if it was in neutral, you'd hear the back-half "clunk" making the shift. If you didn't hear the "clunk," you wouldn't want to start it without the clutch disengaged!) Trust me, I wasn't wrong about the floating twin countershafts, which should have been evident once you removed the top cover, now, was I???? 😉😉😉

Just read through your comments. You have a lot of Aussies and Kiwi's watching your vids. That's strange, but cool. Great vids, and stick to your guns!!

The haters are the loudest, you can have 100 people commenting positive and you focus on the 3 negative ones, but innately we do this because we're humans.
    Just don't engage.
    Love the videos.

I’m new to your channel so here goes ..... 3k for that tractor is a great deal considering that Cummins is worth $8 -$10 k ( pre-DEF AND No Digital port ) ya need 1 more new steering tire or it will pull to one side big time ! Buy bulk on your fluids , it’s much cheaper ! I like the big shoes , I drove Freight-Shakers for the better part of 35 years and love them , my favorite year is 1983 with single headlights . Nice score there ! Don’t call it the Jolly Green giant ! The Hulk or emerald or leprechaun or Green with Envy ! You might want a new pogo stick also . They usually don’t have great heaters or defrosters .

man you're really making some good progress. Ive slowed down quite bit on the Autocar. If you haven't already id add a battery disconnect. these old trucks and their old wiring could short out anytime from stuff rubbing. I found a bunch of bare wire on mine already. keep it up!

As for the strap, I get a bit nervous about tilting Orwell's Cab when you look at the amount of weight on such a small section of structure. Closing on 40 year old structure...

Hey man how's it going. I've been watching your channel since you bought this truck and I love how you are fixing it up. Ain't nothing like an old school truck on the road. I used to drive a truck like that but mine's had bunk beds in it. I do miss driving it. I think you paid a good deal for it. I can't wait to see you get it on the road. I'm OTR and you just don't see old trucks like this on the road anymore. I like your Crocs you were wearing man. Crocs are awesome I have a couple pair of myself. I can't believe that people are giving you a hard time about you wearing your Crocs while working on your truck. You at home and you should be able to wear what you want on your feet. I work on my truck and drive my truck Barefooted 👣, wearing flip-flops , wearing Crocs , or wherever I want to wear. Don't take this the wrong way I'm not mad or anything but it's none of their business of what kind of Footwear you wear. you should still wear your Crocs while working on the truck. If that's what comfortable on your feet that's what you should wear. I know how comfortable crocs cuz I wear mine too. Do you have a good Channel keep up the good work man.

Good buy, I bought mine for 5 sold it for 7 probably had 4 in it, ran it 5 states pulling a dry van, would have taken that truck anywhere. Same engine and trans as yours.

On your steer axle, your oil hubs have a red rubber center cap. If you remove the red center cap you will see a very small weep hole. That hole needs to be kept clear so the hub can breathe when the oil heats up. I used to use welding tip cleaners.
