  • Emily in Paris, the new Netflix TV show! Everybody is talking about this new TV show so I decided to watch it and give you an honest review. My channel is all things French so I had to react to Emily in Paris. I was a bit scared at the start because I heard that the show was full of clichés...and it is true. So many things in that show are not realistic but the show is quite good. Something that I did not mention in the video is the settings. I miss Paris so much I was so happy to be able to see this beautiful city again.

I’m so happy to hear this review from an actual French person. Tbh I was expecting it to be a French version of “Katy Keene” or something. Anyway, all “girly” American shows, follow the same format especially if set overseas. 1) ridiculously unrealistic apartment, even though “Friends” wasn’t girly perse, Monica started this. 2) Everyone at work is mean 3) If France or anything French comes into storyline, it’s super romanticised. Anyway, since you did the review and you said the French is pretty spot on, I will go and watch it. I was afraid of watching it and learning bad French habits.

I’m glad she didn’t add spoilers for people but I would also love to see a French person’s opinion on the storyline when she’s finished it. It gets a ridiculous is the best way which is similar to Katy Keene.

Bonjour, Merci pour ton commentaire 😊 You are right anything French is super romanticised... So far from the reality of living in Paris as a women. I will make a video about the reality of living in France. It is VERY different from Emilly’s BUT it is a show so they wanted to keep it glamour.

The show is basically an over exaggerated American perspective of French culture. I went to Paris for the first time 2 years ago for vacation and I found French people (even parisians) to be completely polite and nice.

What month did you visit in? If it was the summer, than all the Parisians were on vacation, and it was full of tourists...that changes the city a lot. And the good shops and restaurants are all closed. It is very different in April (les grèves) and the summer, especially August

I'm English. I go to Paris for weekend trips. I think Parisians are really charming, smiley and friendly compared to people in England and other European countries. I have heard that Paris is supposed to be the most miserable city in Europe but I have experienced the complete opposite. I receive huge smiles and 'bonjours' from market traders. If I look lost strangers ask me if I'm ok and need help. I was in Starbucks and the guy working there walked up to me and asked if I would like another coffee (I haven't experienced this anywhere else). Charming, smiley, friendly people with great style! :D

I have been to Paris only twice and I had a great experience. I dated a French guy, not from Paris, although he went to University and worked there, but I studied the culture and I know a little French, very basic, but I know how important it is to say hello before an interaction and profusely thank people and wishing them a good day/evening etc, so I experienced the same kindness and even switching to either Spanish or English after asking me if I spoke either- because to some of them I looked Spanish, from Spain. So, I think that there are a lot of nice people in Paris, because that’s all I know!

And you are so right about learning French faster by listening to French people speak it. When I left the states to go over to France, aside for the two years of French I took in high school decades ago, I spent the previous 8 months daily with Duolingo, reading every comment on there, etc., so I had a good enough grasp of it aller en vacances. It wasn't until my nightmare with the trains (SCNF, I'm talking about you and your trains breaking down and not treating your engineers well enough so that they don't strike) that I learned how to really use French to get from point A to point B---and I shocked myself by how well I negotiated my way to where I needed to be in French. The words I needed just bubbled up to the surface in the right order.

I've been to Paris one time. Every French person I met there was friendly. One quasi-exception was a waitress in a restaurant who teased us about being American. I don't remember what she said, but it was a critical joke based on stereotypes of our capitalist culture (my sister and I actually agreed with her), but she immediately followed it with something like, "I am only kidding! I like a lot about America!"
Oh, one other: My sister and I went into a small cafe with small tables. The waiter pulled out the table and gestured for my sister to sit in the chair on the other side because there was no room to walk around the table. We noticed that it was all women sitting inside, but my sister wanted to sit on the outside because (TMI) she was having digestive problems and needed quick access to the bathroom. So she told me to sit where the waiter gestured for her to sit and I did. And the waiter said, "AH, VOUS ÊTES MADAME AUJOURD'HUI!" and pushed the table in. I'm not sure whether he was offended and being rude or just being silly, mais \/\/ |-| /-\ T E \/ /-\ |-|.
I live in Washington, D.C., where people as a rule are not very friendly. People will smile and be helpful in shops and restaurants but on the streets, no, and in working environments-watch your back.
The rudest place I've ever been was England. People in London seemed offended that we were shopping in their stores, and people in Cambridge were just generally curmudgeonly. Interestingly, though we allegedly speak the same language, some language barriers presented themselves among us US students in Cambridge and local people were generally unamused. We asked a woman where to find an ATM, which is a common term in the US. She said "A WHAT?" We said "an A-T-M." And she shook her head disapprovingly and said, "Does that stand for something?" So I said, "We need money. Is there a bank or somewhere we can get money with a bank card?" She said, "What is it you are asking for? What is an ATM?" So I said, "it stands for 'automated teller machine,' like a bank teller. It's a machine you stick your card into to withdraw money." She said, "WE call it a cash machine! ATM? Automated teller, who talks like that? That's ridiculous." Never encountered any attitude like that in Paris or Amsterdam.

I do think that the glamorization of Paris in the show hides what an amazing international city it is. Paris has cuisines from all over the world. I think the middle eastern food in Paris is second only to Beirut.

Just like anywhere in the world, you meet wonderful people, people having a bad day, mean people and---unexpected kindness from strangers helping someone struggling with language.
As an American and geography professor, I find some students have movie or cliched views about the rest of the world and don't know how to be gracious guests. Experiences at a touristy spot in any part of the world be it Paris, Mexico City, New York, Jerusalem or Los Angeles is not indicative of how people live and relate--or who a people "are."
Emily is ridiculous because as a marketing expert she fails to do the most basic research about sites, markets, demographics--her job! She applies her "Chicago model" and expects ardor. The show only makes sense reframed as a privileged American student having a semester abroad. An actual professional would have been 100% more prepared and collegial.

I watched the whole thing recently. I found it fun, I found it east to watch, and I enjoyed reminiscing about when I lived in Paris 30 years ago (it still feels like yesterday, btw). I will say that when I first arrived, and had to get settled and comfortable enough to use my french (the only way to learn is to practice), people were really mean! And I am from New York City, so I get upset when ppl say we are not nice! But... now I live in LA, and New Yorker ARE mean. And Parisians are WORSE!! Especially if they think their English is better than your French (which is now rare for me atleast). OR, they correct your French, nor to help you, but to show their superiority and impatience with you. The further out you get, or if you get out tot he Banlieues, it is a totally different story. Just like the burbs of New York or the Valley in LA. It is just different. But YES! The apartment she has is ridiculous if it was supposed to be a chambre bonne! C'est ridicule! But a corporate apt would not be a chambre bonne anyway, bc, as stated, the lack of WC. I had one en l'île de la cité--stunning location--terrible when you have to pee!! I preferred my huge apt in what is now the Bobo. The minute Covid is over, I am on a plane back. It has been a few years, which is waaaay too long!! Paris me manque beaucoup...😩

Specially while dealing with the admnistration. I worked at a museum and literally nobody wanted to do the french visits because they always were the most difficult to do (they always complaint about something). Talking about the complaining.... its funny because I come from a south american country where people have zero benefits, in France they have all of the benefits like healthcare, government assistance and so on and still... they are quite unhappy.

It's amazing how people are getting so caught up in their feelings about a tv show made by MTV productions marketed as a twist on Sex in the City. (which is also not a realistic depiction of NYC) Geez it's entertainment. To my knowledge it's not being marketed as a documentary. . . To me it's just an exaggerated fantasy of ridiculous stereotypes when American and French cultures collide.(By the way I studied French language and culture from elementary school to 2nd year undergrad in college and i traveled to Paris and stayed for 2 weeks in 2018. And nah. Nobody will have fictional Emily's experience:)

I think people forget American tv shows ideally look to shoot for seasons and the characters need to have long term growth. This is made from the producers of sex and the city. Carrie Bradshaw dramatically changed from season one to season five or six.
If this show gets several seasons, ideally Emily’s French will improve and she will become more influenced by the French people and culture

The show is a nice fun escape especially since we can't travel! Like the show Friends and Sex & the City are not realistic depiction of New York but they are still fun shows. I am a New Yorker and i can still laugh at those shows in New York as the backdrop. I'm sure true Parisians would think its ridiculous just as New Yorkers think movies & tv shows in NYC think its ridiculous. I think shows like to depict new yorkers as mean too! I was in Paris and honestly everyone I met was so nice and helpful! Of course i greeted everyone with Bonjour and tried my best to speak with my limited french.

  • @jow2716

French language is not sexist. The rule of "le masculin l'emporte" is simply deeply grounded in History and language evolution. The romans who colonised France and imported their language used 3 variants: Masculin/Feminine/Neutral.
With the evolution of French, the Neutral started to disapear and grammar became such a mess that the scholastics were expressly asked by the King to establish rules for the French language. Thus the rule of "Le masculin l'emporte" was born, not because men are stronger, just because masculin grammar is simpler than feminine grammar. It was easier to "export" 80% of the words into masculin than to actually take the time to decide each and every word gendre on a case by case.
THAT'S IT, no other reason than a time-consuming exercise. So no, there is no sexism here.

I did once encounter some very rude and insensitive employees at a grocery store after getting injured while running along the Seine, but that's literally the only negative experience I've had there. Most TV/film apartments have to be larger than what would be in reality. The apartment is a set that has to accommodate a camera, camera movement, lights, sound equipment, action, actors, crew, plus props and furniture, etc. If the space is small it would be impossible to shoot in so they cheat a little bit with the size when they build it in on a stage. The show is pretty accurate. Especially French view on work and some new person coming in and trying to change things or bring new ideas. That is very accurate. I agree. Parisians are not that mean. But it was probably just to show the contrast to her positive can-do attitude. If you're friendly and put forth an effort with the language, people are nice and more helpful.

I haven't see the show, but I guess that as usual, the 'baisemain' is wrongly done.
A few basic rules about the 'baisemain':
    - Should be initiated by the lady, never by the man. The man should look at the hand: back of the hand upward, or sideward? hand-kissing or handshake?
    - This question is irrelevant for unmarried women, because only married women would initiate movement for a 'baisemain'. Only super high status young women, or quite old unmarried women would do that.
    - The hand receiving the hand-kissing should be bare. No gloves.
    - 99% of the time, it should be in a closed room, never ever on the street, preferably not in public area such as restaurants.
    - The man should strait up his legs, tight together as for a military salute and bow
    - The lips should NEVER touch the hand. The only part of your face that optionally is allowed to touch the (back of the) hand is your chin. And even then, avoid any touch, to be on the safe side.
Any other baisemain is either for the fun, as a joke, as funny soft flirt. But even then: YOUR LIPS SHOULD NOT TOUCH THE HAND !!!!

I adored watching the show in French with English subtitles. I actually think it makes a difference which language you watch it in and I would not watch it in English because I am actually English and learning French and enjoy watching things much more in French. Of course it is a totally girly outrageously hyper-exaggerated type of show; of course she makes friends immediately ( would be a bit boring watching her reading a book all day!) ; every guy she encounters is gorgeous and immediately interested in her, Parisiens smoke everywhere, give undies as gifts ! Of course this is not real life but we wouldn't watch it if it was!
I actually think it makes more fun of American culture than French culture but is basically a satire on both; it absolutely isn't meant to be taken at face value. The comedy comes a lot from the exaggeration of the stereotypes on both sides and the ensuing cultural and linguistic misunderstandings. I agree with you about the "vagina" issue by the way but many language "purists" would bite my head off ( there's one in my family!) Again it is the clash of ideas that makes for much of the comedy, the "old guard" and the "new guard" for example ( happens everywhere in every country regardless of nationality), thinking preservatives means the same in French as it does in English ( for anyone who doesn't know in French it means condoms!) and that a "douche" in French is the same as a "douche" in English ! I found that hilarious to be honest ( a douche is simply a shower in French of course) To be honest I only ended up watching the show because of all the comments and controversies it seems to have brought up but personally I found it a hilarious satire on both sides, a total escapism from the covid crisis. We don't watch drama to see reality!!!

The relationship between grammar and real sexism is not true. Germans aren't necessarily more sexist than USonians, yet they even have 3 genders. The "masculine" for the "neutre" comes from the fact the Latin neutral was very similar to the masculine, and thus it was "absorved" by the "biggest" one.

Latin languages are sexists in general, I'm a portuguese speaker and the masculine grammar rule aplies in portuguese as well. But at least "a vagina" is a female word and "o pênis" is masculine in portuguese. Now a days there is a discution about the use of neutral pronomes in order to minimize de gender diferences.

    • @brumella
      @brumella 3 года назад +2

I'm Spanish and a Linguist. Latin languages are not sexist. The fact that words like "lamp", "door", "hand" or "knee" are feminine or masculine is completely random and has its origin on the Latin and Indo-European declensions. When Latin languages (except Romanian) abandoned the Latin declension system, there was a need to categorize the words according other parameters. Hence, the grammar gender. That has nothing to do with real life gender identity, except when we are speaking about living creatures.
Using your example, in Spanish "penis" is masculine and "vagina" is feminine. However, their vulgar names "coño" (pussy) and "polla" (dick) are the opposite 🤷🏻‍♀️ Completely random.
A very different thing is when a person CONSCIOUSLY uses sexist expressions. For example, saying in Spanish that a thing is "un coñazo" (a big pussy) to mean that something is boring and/or difficult and using "es la polla" (it's the dick!) to mean that something is amazing and funny. Or saying that someone runs or fight "like a girl".
However, I agree with you that nowadays Latin languages are struggling to adapt to the new reality where there are people identifying themselves as other than woman/man. In that sense, it is necessary to create a new grammatic category to include those people. However, it will take time since languages evolve not so fast and the speakers are the ones in charge of any change.
