Patrick Stewart (Captain Picard on the second Star Trek series) had this to say:
"I had originally not wanted to see [Galaxy Quest] because I heard that it was making fun of Star Trek and then Jonathan Frakes rang me up and said ‘You must not miss this movie! See it on a Saturday night in a full theatre.’ And I did and of course I found it was brilliant. Brilliant.
No one laughed louder or longer in the cinema than I did, but the idea that the ship was saved and all of our heroes in that movie were saved simply by the fact that there were fans who did understand the scientific principles on which the ship worked was absolutely wonderful. And it was both funny and also touching in that it paid tribute to the dedication of these fans."

This has been called "The Best Star Trek movie" ever.
It has also been called one of the few "perfect" movies. No wasted time, no unnecessary dialog and a perfect blend of genrés.
They had considered a sequel until Alan Rickman passed away after which no one wanted to do it without him.

there couldn't have been another one without him. asking another actor to slip into his shoes? his costars wouldn't have accepted it, and neither would the fans. there can be only one Alan Rickman!

If you notice, Saris didnt have a patch or metal left hand the first time you see him. Jason's pre-emptive strike did SERIOUS damage to Saris's body. With practical masks vs cgi, the loss of an eye and hand feel a little more real.

One of my very favorite movies! As a lifelong Star Trek fan, I feel like this is the most beautiful, clever homage to that show and its fans. The genius of it is that anyone can enjoy this film, without knowing anything about Star Trek BUT if you're a fan (particularly of TOS) then there is a whole other level of inside jokes that make this feel like it was written just for you. I never tire of watching it. And just to explain why Fred is so chill--he's supposed to be high the whole time. That's also why he's got the munchies on the shuttle down to the mining planet. LOL. I don't remember why they chose not to mention it but my guess is that they decided to go for a more family-friendly rating.

The actor from "Honey I shrunk the kids" is Rick Moranis. He was also in Ghostbusters 1 and 2, the 1986 musical comedy "Little Shop of Horrors" (Very Funny) , and "Spaceballs" (classic spoof).
Tim Allen (Commander Taggart) was in "The Santa Clause" (1-3)and he was the main character in the sitcom "Home Improvement". He was the voice of Buzz Lightyear in all of the "Toy Story" films (1-4) He has been in a number of comedies that didn't get much traction such as "Big Trouble" 2002. Very funny. Good job with the reaction.

"Galaxy Quest": The best "Star Trek" movie that Paramount didn't make;) Sigourney Weaver stipulated that she be a Blonde. She felt her "IQ levels slipping" whenever shoe wore it...all the way home. As an old "Star Trek" fan, I got the references to the show, but you can enjoy this tale without knowing anything about "Roddenberry's 'Wagon Train to the Stars." I wasn't an arcade video game player, but Ralph's back story drew me into ""Wreck It Ralph" (2012). Check out that video game arcade world where Ralph's stumbling into "Hero's Duty" and "Sugar Rush" will easily be worth your time.;)

Great reaction. Love the movie for decades. You need to check out some of the "making of" segments. Enrico Colantoni (Mathesar) came up with most of the alien mannerisms that everyone else had to learn. And Tony Shaloub (Tech Sgt Chen) decided his character would be wasted on drugs throughout (look for his bag full of weed he carries everywhere and why he's always got the munchies). Lots of good background material from all the cast.

This would make more sense to you if you were familiar with the original "Star Trek." For instance, Jason Nesmith's personality is supposed to be like that of William Shatner who played Captain Kirk. He has a very resilient personality and always has 20 business ventures going at once. He's exactly the kind of guy who if you held his head under water and then just let it up for a second, he'd be claiming victory. Alexander Dane's Dr. Lazarus is supposed to be Leonard Nimoy's Mr. Spock, etc.

I LOVE this movie! - So funny, but I do get a bit teary-eyed when Quellek is shot & tells Dr. Lazarus he was like a father to him. Dr. Lazarus recites the catch phrase that he previously hated, but now with genuine, emotional meaning.

Absolutely! The turning point for Alexander when Quelic's sincerity melts his heart and he finally realizes how important it is to embody the character he has despised. It's truly a beautiful moment. Can't help but think of Leonard Nimoy's dedication to Trek fans, particulary his farewell speech at his last official appearance which he closed with the iconic Vulcan hand sign and the words "Live long and prosper". Such a generous moment if true greatness🥲

    Some references you may not have gotten;
Jason was based on William Shatner, who played Captain Kirk in the original Star Trek. Shatner was known for kind of hogging the spotlight, sometimes annoying the other cast members. He once yelled at a fan who was asking him questions about stuff in the series, and told the guy to get a life, and that it was only a TV show. It's also kind of a running joke that Captain Kirk often took his shirt off, or had it removed, or ripped off.
Alexander is based on Leonard Nimoy who played Mr. Spock. After the series ended, Nimoy hated that everyone associated him with that role. He wrote a book titled "I Am Not Spock". His attitude softened in later years and he came to appreciate that the fans loved him for that role, even writing a book titled "I Am Spock".
Guy, the nervous extra, is based on the red-shirted security guards in Star Trek who would almost always be the first to die. In fact, it happened so often that people now refer to disposable cast members as "red shirts". There's a meme on the net that's a screencap from a Star Trek episode showing kirk standing next to three anonymous red-shirted crew members, and the caption says "Dig three graves over there. I'll explain why later." :)
When Jason is facing the rock creature and Guy tells him to try and build some sort of rudimentary laser(?), that's a reference to a Star Trek episode where Kirk was stranded on a planet facing a lizard alien and had to build a primitive cannon out of a piece of hollow log and some natural chemicals to make gunpowder.
Another goof: When Tommy is piloting the ship out of spacedock and he scrapes the nose of the ship, that wouldn't be possible. The wings of the ship would hit long before the nose would. The ship would have to be turned at a much sharper angle than shown in the film and then it probably would have just crashed into the side.
Also, if the Thermians modeled every aspect of their lives on the Galaxy Quest TV show, why are they wearing dark gray uniforms rather than the ones shown on the TV show? Shouldn't they have copied the Galaxy Quest uniforms as well?

There's a fun comedy western "The Three Amigos!" with a similar plot starring Steve Martin, Chevy Chase and Martin Short. "Galaxy Quest" sort of borrows plot elements from it. But "The Three Amigos" is sort of a spoof of another classic western drama "The Magnificent Seven" which in turn is based on the classic Kurosawa film "Seven Samurai."
None of that sharing of ideas in any way takes away any of the enjoyment of all of those films which are entertaining and inventive each in their own ways.

That was fun! Your reactions were just so nice. This is a perfect film, one of my favorites. Sadly, no sequel.
It was modeled after the first Star Trek series in the 60s, the Tim Allen as Peter Taggert and the Commander representing both Captain Kirk and William Shatner, with the cast dynamics that were also a part of making the show and all the tropes that evolved along the way. Dr. Lazarus was the Mr. Spock (with the hand gesture) analogy. Note that the actor in the film never removed his headpiece even at home!
The actor who played Mathazar developed all the traits of the Thermians and taught his "crew" how to be those creatures. And yes, Fred was supposed to be stoned throughout (they cut his smoking scene for the rating to keep it kid-friendly).
I can never pass up a reaction to this movie, and yours was delightful.

Star Trek was a fairly major media franchise. The original series back in the sixties only ran for three seasons, but it was later followed up by a series of five movies, numbered 1-4 and 6 (ST:TMP, STII:TWOK, STIII:TSFS, STIV:TVH, and STVI:TUU), then in the eighties they did three more series (The Next Generation, Deep Space Nine, and Voyager) that each ran for seven seasons, plus several more movies featuring the characters from TNG. The last movie, Nemesis, killed off probably the second-most-fan-beloved character in the history of the franchise; they left themselves a loophole to kind-of sort-of bring him back, but a few years later, instead of either continuing without him or spending an entire movie bringing him back, they elected instead to do a prequel series (called Enterprise) with all new characters.
After that, unfortunately, they permanently abrogated the possibility of any further additions to the franchise, by allowing a reboot-producer to break the canon with, essentially, crummy fan fiction officially licensed to use the trademarks; and thus the franchise died. C'est la mort.
Tim Allen is principally known for a prime-time sitcom called Home Improvement, in which he played the power-tool-obsessed father. The series was rather formulaic and is honestly not worth watching, but for some reason it was extremely popular at the time. About 80% of the people I knew were obsessed with it.

Just a ton of fun, taking cues from other sci-if shows & movies…such a great homage in my opinion. Terrific casting, & from what I read they had a great time making this film. So many have said Tim Allen is such a good guy to work with. He has some good films & TV series that are so entertaining. (You mentioned Star Trek, would love for y’all to watch the original series! Groundbreaking in so many ways & had some amazing storylines)

I agree that CGI is not as good - I personally think they use it because they can create more creatures for over-the-top battles where it becomes so unrealistic that I lose interest. It's like they have to add more and more to satisfy people now. It would be hard to handle that many real people in makeup.

Best s/f comedy, so your reaction had to be awesome as it is. Great casting.
For "Honey, I shrunk our kids" you have to watch another s/f comedy - "Spaceballs" if you didn't.

you should try The shaggy dog with Tim Allen in it or A little chaos if you like kinda history fiction with Alan Rickman or Aliens with Sigourney Weaver
    just a suggestion 😅
Edit: please try Star Trek too! start with The Original Series before the Films correspond to that Series, you'll love it😊

Wonderful! And if you'd like to watch original Star Trek (TV episodes and movies), go for it! I'm sure any of us Star Trek fans would love to see what you think of at least the better shows in that series. But you two are wonderful no matter what you are reacting to.
