First of all, notice how Luke responded “how do u know?” rather than “who is it??” 👀👀👀
Secondly, Lin-Manuel Miranda DEVOURED Hermes. You could see the HEARTBREAK in his eyes talking about how powerless he felt with Luke. What a great actor to cast.
Third, I completely agree with your point surrounding the change in plot and introduction of information we wouldn’t get until book 2/5. The books had a lot time for dialogue and perspective so it was easier to draw the story out and slowly introduce the main plot. However the show has limited time, a budget, and viewers who haven’t read the books so it can be challenging or even out right impossible to create a carbon copy of the book and to convey a theme or a message effectively. I really appreciate how well the adaptation has been written. Again it’s not perfect (ex. Pacing in some areas or run time) but I’m happy I can watch the show and still have brand new content!

I think the reason Percy drove is because we know Annabeth has basically lived year round at camp since she was 7 years old. She hasn't even seen movies in that time, so she's not very familiar with anything she wouldn't have been familiar with as a little girl. Whereas Percy has been in and around cars much more recently and for much more time total than she has. It's reasonable to think he might do a better job... but as a first-time driver with no supervising adult to give him tips, he did..... as bad as might be expected.
It's interesting but definitely understandable why they introduced more of Luke's backstory up front. Obviously he's a major character and his motivations are important, but since they introduced Hermes and had him interact with the cast earlier, it's a really smart move to also introduce his relationship with his major character son. Since Percy is the sole and limited POV of the first series, anything he doesn't know wasn't included until it came up in the story, but since he's interacting with Hermes, and while with Annabeth, who DOES know part of the story... Checks out to me!

If you go back to the section where Grover is talking to Augustus in front of the VR machine, you can hear a kid saying 'Bianca, Bianca' in the background. But you have to really listen for it.

Yes, you can hear a young boy call out “Bianca, Bianca”. It’s around minute 12:30. It’s really interesting considering that that specific scene is the thumbnail for this episode on Disney+.

I have a feeling one of the pearls will get lost. To make the choice more tragic because they thought they wouldn't have to make a sacrifice. It wouldn't surprise me considering how chaotic the Hades part of book 1 was. There are many ways to lose one of them.

That's a good point. I can totally see them losing a pearl in the confusion to save Grover from being dragged into the pit (or something like that)

I feel bad for us book readers because I think we are excited for future books more than book 1. Considering books 1 and 2 were the ones with not much main plot focus. Mostly focused on the quest of that book.
But I love this show. I'm hoping the rest of the series doesn't take too long being made. But I also want them to not rush it.
While watching new viewers I've noticed what the show does for new viewers and so the writing is alot more coherent for new viewers. Plus they may be making the show more digestable for children. We aren't children anymore but we need to keep that in mind when watching.

While I am excited for future books, season 1 is going to be instrumental in laying the foundation - introducing characters, worldbuilding, etc - that will make future seasons work. Books 3-5 might be the most beloved and discussed within the fandom, but that's only because we'd fallen in love with the characters throughout books 1-2.
I've noticed that they also have Percy explain his thoughts out loud more than he does in the books. The book is in first person, so the reader hears all his thoughts and observations, including the ones he keeps to himself. Whereas in the show, they have to find a way to make his internal thoughts known to the audience (for example, keeping his goal to save Sally a secret in the book vs Grover telling him he can save her in the show).

I agree with you, I know some other people felt like they jumped the gun with the backstory so earlier but I liked it, I always felt like Luke was best as a character when more of the focus was on the fallen hero aspect of him rather then when he is just portrayed as a straight villain.

      @ChannelNamePending699  6 месяцев назад +5

Agreed! My biggest problem with Luke in the books is that he's mostly portrayed as evil and too far gone (from Percy's POV at least) up until TLO where we learn how tragic his backstory was, but by then it almost felt like too little too late. Learning more about him and having us sympathize with him this early gives him a bit more depth and makes his motivations more complex than 'I got a lame quest and now I want to burn Western civilization to the ground'. Not that it was ever that simple, but I appreciate the show's efforts to flesh him out more proactively.

I agree with that Disney+ shows are way too short. It's so strange because it's streaming so they can and should be longer.
    The car scene was hilarious!
I must say as someone who has never read the books (although not for long), I am really liking this series.

I love smart people! Lol. It's so refreshing how you analyzed the changes in a rational way instead of just jumping to conclusions and claiming 'they ruined the plot,' which many people are doing right now. I've been thinking about this episode since the show dropped and have many thoughts regarding the changes.
First of all, and this is an unpopular opinion, I really love this episode and how they executed the Lotus Casino plotline. In the books, as you said, it was a very short, kind of boring (to me) chapter. So I went in already expecting them to change things. I love that they were able to maximize the time to add layers to the overall narrative while still keeping the whole point of the Lotus Casino from the books. Dropping May Castellan lore so early is such an interesting change and a very welcome one. It's a good way to flesh out Luke's backstory before the betrayal was revealed and make us sympathize with him and understand his motivations. Also, someone on TikTok mentioned that they might also be making Hermes and Poseidon as foils of each other (the same way Percy and Luke are) given that in the same episode, they showed Poseidon caring for Sally by giving four pearls instead of three. Then, I also like that they planted more seeds for Grover's future quest with Pan. This solidifies how much he cares about finding Pan and makes the audience care/want more of his side of the story. I'm mind-blown by your discovery that Pan is actually really close to where they are. That's such a nice little detail.
Regarding the most talked-about changes they made - the pearls and the solstice deadline - I think, in addition to Poseidon caring for Sally, it is also more logical to give them four. Because, in the show, everybody knows Sally is in the underworld, and the Nereid explicitly said the purpose of the pearls. In the books, it wasn't stated what the pearls are for. Now, if they were only given three, the more sound decision is for them to leave one behind (maybe Grover) to make sure no one is left behind in the underworld. So, this change makes more sense than giving them only three. I'm 100% sure they are going to lose one pearl because of the preview for the next ep too. So what I'm excited about is how they will do it and which crazy adventure of them will result in them losing one of the pearls.
As for the deadline, it seems pretty clear to me that it was done to heighten the stakes and also for Percy's character development. As you said, this is what we love about Percy. He's the kind of person that will push through even though the people around him say it's impossible. He is the hero for a reason, and him verbally stating that he wants to finish the quest despite what the Nereid said perfectly shows that. It also shows the contrast between him starting out just wanting to get his mother back to someone who cares enough to stop the war. Now, when he decides to leave his mother behind, just like in the books, it'll feel more earned and make sense to his character arc.
Anyway, those are all my thoughts. I'm really excited for the last two episodes. I personally trust the writers because so far the changes made were all done for the better, and it's pretty clear to me that they are laying out the groundwork for the upcoming seasons. Hope we also get mupltiple season renewal soon.

Very solid analysis! I agree - I think a lot of people might be worried that we're just getting a repeat of what happened with the movies. But the difference between the movies and the show is that the changes in the movie made no sense or took away from the story, while the changes in the show have (so far) either enhanced the source material or helped make it more cohesive for translation to screen. At least that's my opinion.
I can definitely see Poseidon and Hermes as foils. This isn't even the first time Poseidon has proven himself to be a more caring parent than other gods - just two episodes ago, he saved Percy's life mere minutes after Athena abandoned Annabeth. They've also repeatedly emphasized how Poseidon *is* watching Percy, that it hurts to watch him struggle and that he's proud of him. They're doing a good job of having us root for Poseidon while simultaneously calling the honor of the gods into question.
I mentioned it elsewhere in this thread, but I can totally see them losing a pearl in the confusion to save Grover from falling into the pit. There's also the scary possibility that Percy doesn't even lose a pearl at all, but is still forced to leave Sally behind anyway since Hades would never let them leave without the bolt. Either way, the choice to leave Sally in the Underworld is definitely well set up to be even more heartbreaking in the show.
