Ahhhh who cares if it’s inaccurate, the acting, the music, the mountains, that battle field, Mel Gibson screaming “freeeedooommm”… what a classic!

The general content of the film is historically accurate obvious the writer took some liberties. Must be triggered British people who don't like their own history.

I hate that they don't make movies like this anymore.
I’m Scottish and have visited the Wallace Monument in Stirling. We went to the top of it and could look over to the bridge where they had the battle. We also got to see the sword Wallace used. It was massive. The movie was amazing as you said. The Scots are very proud of their history and Wallace was a big part of it. This was 12/13th century so there wasn’t much in the way of comforts for Scots if you weren’t a Noble.
By the way you speak you isn't Scottish. Your English that think you are! If you were Scottish you wouldn't talk about the only monument you know to visit! Stop pretending your Scottish!
One of THE best films to ever been made.
RIP James Horner who did the score. Has to be the most beautiful soundtrack ever... And he also did the score for small movie called Titanic...
But yeah... What a monumental effort from Gibson, direct and act the main part... Probably more fiction than historically accurate but still a beautiful and amazing movie...
Don't forget he also did Aliens.

This movie inspired me so much. It came out on my 16th birthday. I loved it so much I took a trip to Scotland for a couple weeks after high school and saw the Wallace Monument and the Bruce Monument. He was an amazing man. Do yourself a favor and research the actual person. Not a lot is known about him as they didn't really keep records in the 13th century. What they do know, or think is accurate is amazing. He probably was well over 6 feet tall, a giant back then. He was also extremely strong, brilliant, and was known to dispatch several enemies at a time on the battlefield. A true man among men. Crazy side note, he skinned the guy who killed his wife and made his sword sheath out of the hide. Different times back then.
One of the greatest guy movies of all time. The guy who played the king was phenomenal

I've been to Edinburgh Scotland and there is a 300 foot tall statue of William Wallace, and if you talk to any Scot, they still say to this day he is their greatest hero

I watched this movie when it came out and dozens of times after. Wow I can only imagine being Scottish and watching this when it came out.
Mel Gibson's commentary is great during the first battle scene that it looked so realistic that they got ALOT of calls about animal cruelty even though they had ridiculously expensive animatronics and really well trained horses. Plus how they employed alotta amputees to show actual limbs being chopped off lmao.
That’s good to know because I can hardly watch scenes in this with the horses. I am glad they took special care with that.
@@MontagZoso in the special features on the 2 disk dvd they show a part with alotta behind the scenes stuff with the horses riding into downhill areas to make it seem like they are falling, the super expensive animatronics & all the great stuntmen & riders that made the Battle of Sterling (which should be next to a narrow bridge, not a open field lol) work. Mel said he was actually really happy when all the animal activists were upset because while he knew no animals were harmed, they were totally convinced

@@Jenacide Thanks, I'm really into military history and while im mostly into WW1 & beyond, these medieval & older battles can really teach us a lot about battle strategy that still holds up centuries later. Hannibal Barka of Carthage is a great example of how even though you may be outnumbered, strategy can make up the difference, just like Wallace & his Chiltron, which is what he called his wall of spearman.
Wow it’s cool they used a head amputee to double for the English captain for the battle of Stirling
The musical score of this classic combined with love and li e taken is enough to make a a grown man weep.😎😪
This film is a masterpiece. I rewatch it every few years.
I love every time someone reacts to this movie. It's such an epic movie. The music alone can almost bring me to tears. I love it so much. Heartbreaking at times, but still a good movie

One of the all time greats. The movie has everything and really pulls on your emotions like few films I have ever seen.
I saw this in a cinema in Chicago (while working there for the summer from Scotland) , and thought, why dont movies like this win Oscars? and 8 months later it did... :)
I saw this at the cinema back in 96 and let me tell you this was like NOTHING before, fricking epic. There were oohs, ayahs, and fuck ya's throughout the movie from all watching with limbs flying, heads in baskets, and people split in half. Still in my top 5 all time movies even though history was liberally infringed upon. A much more historically correct, while not as violently pleasing, Netflix movie "Outlaw King" about Robert the Bruce gives a history starting from right before the death of Wallace to the battle where Scotland wins the Battle of Bannockburn in 1314 which leads to Scottish Independence in 1328's Treaty of Edinburgh.
I *LOVED* Outlaw King, even though it was a flawed, flawed movie.

31:34, probably one of my favorite scenes in the movie, the ACTING in Mel Gibson's reaction and then you have Robert The Bruce's (I SAW IT FROM HIS FACE AND IT'S TEARING ME APART). The very best in acting ever I think. 32:48.
Totally agree. I think as men we have all been there. Maybe not to this degree but in some sense we have had deep regret.

Braveheart is my favorite movie. It’s not completely historically accurate, but I don’t care because it’s such an epic story!

Wallace's legend is an incredible study.
Took home multiple awards including 5 Oscars.
This is why Mel Gibson is indeed one of the great actor/filmmakers that we have.
There is an sequel of sorts to Braveheart.
Came out in 2019 and it was called "Robert The Bruce".
If it's the right Robert The Bruce, that same great actor who played in Braveheart also plays in its sequel.
This movie has to rank up there in my all time favorites. Even though, it was very loosely based on the life of William Wallace, it was very effective in drawing you into the characters and getting you emotionally invested. It is also, a great reflection, on the cruelties that people endured in that generation, and the courage of some, to fight for freedom despite the odds against them.
I was a scrawny 14 year-old when I saw the Thursday midnight showing of this opening day. This film made me feel a passion I had never felt before.
The rush was incredible. I remember immediately going home and lifting weights until the sun came up.
I actually got to tell the story to Mel while working on one of his other films, and he told me that his producer looked at him after the first screening and said, "little kids were going into see his movie as boys and they were coming out men."
Great job on how you break down the movies at the end of the video. I saw Braveheart at the movies back in the day, it's one of my favorites. He did a movie called, The Patriot, after this one. Not as good as this movie but still entertaining. I also second a recommendation for Rob Roy, it has an awesome cast and a great ending.

I recommend Apocalypto and Last of the Mohicans if you haven't seen it yet.
Iron Maiden has a song called The Clansman. The lyrics are pretty much about this. Wallace isn't mentioned by name, but it's about the same point in time in Scotland when they were fighting for independence from England. The lyrics seem as if they are from Wallace's perspective.
Great movie. Another great historical movie that came out the same time but was overshadowed by this movie success is Rob Roy 1995 with Liam Nisson. You should also react to Mel Gibbson underrated great action movie Ransom.

Very historically incorrect from the beginning with even getting the date wrong but as a Scot it’s still a goddamn masterpiece.
Dad was working in Singapore at the time and went to see it in the cinema and was so homesick seeing the mountains

every video i see there is alwayys someone that just NEEDS to say that its historically inaccurate. its a fucking movie, not a Biography. Remember the Titans wasnt historically accurate either, but its still a good movie.
@@JoshuaDay0550 Same with Apocalypto, people have to point out that its inaccurate, just enjoy the movie, no where did Mel Gibson ever come out and say that these movies are 100 percent accurate, and how would anyone even know if they weren't even alive then.

@@JoshuaDay0550 if it didn't explicitly claim to be the real history, as opposed to the made-up "English" account, in the first lines of the film, I doubt people would get as bent out of shape over it. No one really cares much that Gladiator is almost 100% bullshit, because it doesn't include a line about how historians are lying.

We were all Scottish for this film, as they were so wronged, who could not be.

Errr no.It's so inaccurate of the history that this is not worthy of giving an "important lesson". You are just as well off watching LotR for a lesson.
@@Dunk1970 Errr yes. Historical accuracy is not the purview of art. Braveheart is a great film with great lessons. Incidentally, you're correct about Lord of the Rings. It contains valuable lessons despite being totally fictional. Humans have used myth, legend, fiction, and fable to convey ideas and moral lessons since the dawn of civilization.
@@PerfectHandProductions Your follow-up I can accept. I can't agree with Braveheart being good at giving an important lesson though as it contains too much fiction pretending to be reality. Consequently, any message is completely muddied as many people think these things actually happened.

This movie came out when I was in high school and I regret to this day not going to see it in the theater. It would have been magnificent on the big screen. That being said, even with all of it's historical inaccuracies, it is in my top 5 list of favorite movies of all time. I have watched it with all of my kids (once they were old enough). Your reaction was fantastic! Thanks for doing this one...I haven't seen a lot of people do this one and you made me smile with this today!

I saw this two or three times at the theater when it came out. Just amazing. And it did very well at the Oscars that year.
I say this to everyone who enjoys this film, Outlaw King is the perfect follow up movie. It follows Robert the Bruce continuing Wallace's campaign.

A similar movie (historical, swords, scotland) i absolutely recommend is Rob Roy from 1995 (Liam Neeson, 1 Oscar nomination). If you like these kind of movies.

If you want swords... Master and Commander, The Far Side of the World is a movie that is in many movie goers top 5. It's one of those movies that surprises you that you loved it so much. Russell Crow head the top shelf cast. It's also known as the most historically correct movie ever made.

This movie reminds me of the struggles that my Celtic ancestors had to face and it keeps me humble that I live such a pampered life compared to them. Freedom should never be taken for granted; that’s why this movie resonates with so many people around the world.

The black stuff poured down onto the people from the castle was hot oil. It was often used to defend a castle or fort. It lights on fire too, as you can see.
This was the very first movie I ever owned on DVD and still own my original copy. I saw this movie when it was available to rent as I wasn't old enough to see it in theaters, and my God, I never saw anything like it and didn't see anything that equaled or topped it until Kill Bill came out.
Loved the reaction! I recommend you watch "The Last Samurai". It's a beautifully shot film about war, honor, and the changing of times.
A warrior acts like a hawk hunting a dove. Although he flies into a thousand doves,his only concern is the first one he makes eye contact with.

yes, he fought for the freedom from an English feudal system for a Scottish feudal system.
The “Noblemen” were Scottish people who were paid wealth by the British to be the “slavekeepers” of the Scottish commoners.
If the Scottish noblemen just gave their loyalty to Scotland instead of England, things could have been differently.
I would settle for the politicians giving some loyalty now

fun fact about medival times and armour. primarily they would used whats known as brigandine and it was not super heavy and didn't affect their movement in battle.

At the scene that of the siege of York, the black stuff they dropped from the walls was boiling hot tar. Tar can't be wiped off, it is thick and flammable. A great way to beak way to stop an attack. They used it in the Medieval times, when they could get the tar.
It was good enough to get people looking and seeing what the truth was!
Fairly new to your reactions. I had a belly laugh when I watched your reactions to Tombstone and Braveheart back to back. In Tombstone you seemed a bit shocked at the gun violence; but, in Braveheart I watched you become pretty bloodthirsty.
William wallace was a great man and leader...he was also a huge man said to be powerfully built standing 6 foot 6 inches tall ...his sword is on display in Stirling castle in scotland ..its a Scottish broad sword 6 foot in lenght

No horses were harmed. They went to great lengths and expense to make the mechanical horses as realistic as possible.
This movie has some of the best music.
