It's a vicious cycle that is so painful yet incredibly relatable. Paulie is a slave to his booze yet he is trying in his own way to break free.

Rocky is a classic and not just a legendary film, but a timeless one which will be talked about for hundreds and hundreds of years. Sylvester Stallone is one of the most famous names in Hollywood and is recognized around the world. However, he was once in the lowest of low places in his life. He didn't have a dime to his name, and was basically living on the street. He had a baby on the way and he had to take any job he could get to make any kind of money he could, and went so low to star in a porno. He was in the lowest place anyone could be. He had an interview with United Artists and said he had an idea for a film, and he would come back with a script. He wrote the original draft for Rocky in 3 DAYS. He brought it back to United Artists and refused to sell the script. He knew that the character he wrote was him, and he had to play him. This was his last chance, and this was the decision that would change his life forever. They offered him 75k, then 150k, then 300k eventually reaching about 400k, still refusing to sell the script. They eventually gave in and he was cast as Rocky and the film got an under 1 million dollar budget. Long story short; Rocky made 225 MILLION DOLLARS at the Box Office and was nominated for 10 Oscars, winning 3 of them (Best editing, best direction, and BEST PICTURE). Sylvester Stallone proved that no matter how low you are in your life, how much your struggling, and even when nobody believes in you, you CAN DO IT. This is Rocky.

In 1975, to use in a sales pitch for his new invention, the Steadicam, Garrett Brown filmed his girlfriend running up and down the steps at the Philadelphia Art Museum. When the newly hired director of "Rocky", John Avildsen saw the footage he purchased use of the Steadicam for the movie and asked "where are those steps?". When Avildsen and Stallone saw the steps in person the script was partially rewritten to change the movie's location from New York to Philadelphia and history was made.

The Rocky character is one of my all time movie favorites ever.
I love how Rocky is so humble, and stays humble through the course of the movies as he gains stardom and legendary status. He doesn't stray too far from that humble and soft spoken person he was in the first film -- yet at the same time he gains with each film, more and more confidence in his talent, his power, and self awareness, and he also keeps that determination to tough through hard times, hard fights.
Sylvester Stallone is an absolute champ in continuing Rocky's story over the decades and then branching off into Creed...and allowing Rocky fans to keep cheering him on, even after his fighting days are done.
I love that Sly seems to have kept Micky in mind as he developed Rocky to that point in his old age, where he is there for someone else, the same way that old Micky was there for him.

The title fight was choreographed by Stallone himself, so basically every boxing match in a film since then owes a credit to Stallone. The fight was also filmed in reverse, starting with Round 15 and ending with Round 1, as it was easier to put on all the make-up to film the last round and just remove a little bit of it as they went. Sylvester Stallone wrote and (unofficially) co-directed Rocky - he wrote *all* the Rocky movies and solely directed II, III, and IV.
The core theme (which a lot of people miss) was Rocky proving his worth as a fighter - he could hardly care less what others thought of him, but he had to prove it to himself. Creed was a powerhouse and few of his fights ever went past the fifth round. He never cared whether he won or lost the fight - he went the full fifteen rounds against Apollo (something no one else had even come close to doing) and *THAT* was his victory.

(especially those, dont miss them.) he was the original penquin in the batman tv series. was on a few of the most classic twilight zone episodes. and he had a 25 year career in film and stage before any of that.

Sylvester Stallone was always a writer first, he started writing when he was a kid as a hobby. He wrote the script in three days. The love story between Rocky and Adrian I've always found to be one of the most touching in cinema. That first kiss is one of the sexiest ones on screen, because it is so moving and paced perfectly and it's between two very ordinary people who become extraordinary together.

Stallone literally knocked on studio doors with his script in hand. He was broke as you can be. Couch surfing when he could. Sleepibg in the subway. Even did some soft porn to survive. Finally a studio offered him $200,000 for the script. 200 GRAND. In 1975. To someone living on the street. Just one stipulation. Stallone would not get to play Rocky. He thanked them for the time and left with his script. A year and a half later, his surprise hit movie won Best Picture, Best Screenplay and Sylvester Stallone became..... Sylvester Stallone. Now, THAT'S a "Rocky" story.

Not sure if it's been said, but the Rocky story was based off of Stallone's life and he was literally offered more money not to play the role of Rocky but realized if he didn't play the roll and it was a success he'd kill himself. Also when he met the actor who played Creed, Creed made a comment that I'll do better when I work with the real guy "not knowing Stallone was playing Rocky", Stallone thought he was so cocky he was perfect for the role of Creed. Even his dog in the movie was his real life dog who he had to sell prior to making this money for like $20 bucks and paid a couple thousand to get back after he sold the script.

So many people think that Rocky 1 is about Rocky winning the fight. It was NEVER about Rocky "winning" so much as it was Rocky being taken SERIOUSLY as a fighter. That no matter what, win or lose, the true sign of a winner is someone who shows up and puts in the work against ALL the odds. And in that regard, Rocky hits the nail on the head.

The thing I like about the first 2 Rocky movies is that even though Apollo is the champ, he's not a bad guy, even in the second movie the only reason he acts the way he does is for the cameras and to get Rocky to agree to the rematch. He was never a villain. The only problem he had in the first movie was that he did underestimate Rocky because he thought that a local no name fighter wouldn't be up to his standards, but he was never a bad guy.

In 1975 Chuck Wepner went 15 rounds with Muhammad Ali. Wepner wasn't in anywhere near the shape Ali was and had the nickname The Bayonne Bleeder because he was bad at protecting his face. He took incredible punishment all fight but Ali had to win on points.
Stallone correctly thought that a great story could be made about this sort of underdog tale about a boxer who didn't win but stunned the world by refusing to lose outright. He wrote Rocky, and nearly bankrupted himself fighting to have it picked up and be able to star in it himself, being an unknown writer and actor.
The making of interview Stallone gives about the movie is a great watch too, its a real underdog story in and of itself.
