You have the sweetest reactions! I hope you never stop doing this lol
So glad they chose a wonderful person to represent them!
Hi !. You can also watch "Rob Roy".
According to court records of that time, William Wallace actually did say those words, about longshanks not being his king, and therefore didn't agree with the charge of treason.
William Wallace was 'hanged, drawn and quartered' and beheaded.
The audience was spared the details of the ordeal William Wallace had to go through, on the day of his execution.
First, He was dragged naked by his heels behind a horse to the execution site, at Smithfield, London.
First he was hanged, and before losing consciousness, dropped down to the ground.
Then, The 'rack' pulled all the joints out of their sockets.
After that, while still alive, his genitals were removed, cut out, and thrown in a fire before him.
Then, while still alive, his abdomen was cut up, and his entrails spilled out, and were removed, and thrown into the same fire.
The executioner then cut out Wallace's heart, and then William Wallace was beheaded.
Finally, the executioner quartered William Wallace (cut off his arms and legs).

Before being dragged by my friends to see Braveheart for the first time, I remember thinking to myself, "Come on, guys, can this thing honestly be good enough for a literal Oscar?" _After_ watching it, I just remember sitting there in stunned silence, thinking, "Uh,... is an Oscar good enough for *_this_* ?"
Fun fact: During the funeral scene the girl was initially meant to give William a rose.
This raised eyebrows from one of the English historians who was helping out with the film, who pointed out that the Rose is England's National Flower.
The Thistle is Scotland's National Flower.
Which is why in that scene William is given the gift of a Thistle. Foreshadowing what he would one day do for Scotland.
"Historians", there is nothing historical about this film, it's fantasy at best
@@hoddedman_ARGTroll. Don't be bitter little boy.
@@hoddedman_ARG its a dramatisation that plays loose with history, with some of the inspiration coming from Blind Harry's poem from the 15th century. to claim there is nothing historical about it is just silly. However, there is plenty of things in the movie that DID happen. Most importantly, Longshanks being an absolute w*ker
@@hoddedman_ARGits not a 100% wrong tho
@@hoddedman_ARG Hollywood seldom does well with history, and the few cases where they do, they tend to end up with a poor movie. A few of the movies that have been accurate and remained good films would be Glory and Hacksaw Ridge directed by Mel Gibson(where most of the inaccuracy comes from omitting some of Doss' heroic acts because they were afraid 'they won't believe it'). For Hollywood Historical Braveheart is about in the middle, certainly they have produced far less historically accurate films.
The scenes with Robert the Bruce and his father hit me the hardest. So much emotion, so much weight behind him wanting to believe and denouncing the ways of his father. "I don't want to lose heart!"
In a Director's commentary Mel Gibson pointed out he wanted to add more lighting to Robert The Bruce's face and redo the scene but he pointed out the inner conflict on his face from being half in darkness and halfway in the light. It subtlety enhances the entire scene so Mel G. left it alone because of these facts.
Same. It shows his evolution. He took a few steps forward, followed by a few steps back, but then forward again. It’s a more realistic look for someone who is seeking virtue but stumbles and falls along the way, but still presses forward.
@@bryguysays2948 Your comment made me realize I haven't watched the director's commentary version yet. Time to find it. Thanks.
In many ways the bible 😎👍
@@shinHis3 There is a mini documentary about Mel made by a french/german TV station which is really worth the watch. It is called "Mel Gibson: Vergöttert und verteufelt". It is very interesting, maybe give it a go. Mel is a controversial person but I like him a lot.
A little bit of history, when it came out in Scotland it ran in the cinemas for 2 months, I personally saw it 3 times and saw it on the last showing in my local cinema. Each and every time it got a standing ovation by all.
The scene where Murron opens the handkerchief, and finds the thistle... first she's confused... then, like a lightning bolt, she realizes it was the SAME thistle flower... and she melts. One of my favorite movies, and that was one of my favorite scenes in ANY movie... This movie is a "love story for men". Guy gets girl, guy loses girl, guy wrecks bloody vengence for her murder.... in the process gets another girl, and makes lots of awesome friends. OK, so, the ending, while predictable, isn't perfect from a love-story perspective, but still....
From a guys version of a RomCom I say the ending is perfect. He left a child in the home of his enemy (in that context a huge win for him), got a princess, fought for his country, and fell to betrayal rather than his own ego. In the end he kept his honor and integrity even under the most extreme circumstances. For men this was 10/10.
The betrayal is the heaviest scene of all IMO.
Agreed, the look of exasperation and futility on Wallace's face after he unmasks Robert the Bruce.. says everything with no words.
Without a doubt. Just by looking at the utter shock on Wallace’s face, I felt as If someone had betrayed me lol.
Those eyes 👀 wow
Mind you, if the Bruce had got his act together and betrayed William Gromit earlier they could have cut 45 minutes off the damned film 😊
betrayal is one of the worst thing that can happen to you. Perfect acting from both of them
"They may take our lives but they'll never take OUR FREEDOM!"
Winner of 5 Oscars including Best Picture.
And utter nonsense historically. Almost nothing in the movie actually happened.
@@Shoomer1988 I lot of it did happen. Just not the way depicted or when. The French princess would have been a child at the time, so yeah, that part is total fiction.
@@Shoomer1988 Stirling Bridge was actually fought around a bridge and the bridge collapsed in the middle of the battle because the English horses were on it because the Scots wouldn't let them set up to fight as per rules of chivalry. and the long stakes were were used in the Battle of Falkirk.

Well shit. I'm not human but then again im ex-infantry.
It is not even close to being historically accurate, but Braveheart is a truly great film nonetheless! As usual, Mel Gibson is fantastic. The story is totally captivating. And the reclamation of Robert the Bruce at the end is heartwarming. Robert the Bruce was a true Scottish patriot!
There are some historical inaccuracies , but the end execution scene was pretty much what was done in England , hang to near dead , cut genitals off , disbowel and then cut the head off ... but all is fine now , when England has a King and he is Scottish .
Or their a british historian who knows how inaccurate this is.
As an englishman I of course laughed. Brave heart is a comedy though is t it.
Great movie with one of the best soundtracks ever written.
Howard Shore if I'm not mistaken
@@alaneskew2664 -- James Horner, actually 🙂I think he should have won an Oscar for this, or maybe "Legends of the Fall", but instead he got it for "Titanic", which was...okay, but not as good as this was.
As a dad, the scene where Hamish's dad dies hits me so hard. The last words are so strong! "Proud to see you become the man you are!" This might be the best thing a dad can ever say to his son!
I was so lucky to see it in the theatre, I cried several times, you did so well, this is an epic masterpiece
Back then when the movie was released on home video, it was released on 2 cassettes VHS because it was too long for 1 cassette. When my idiot friends, who were stoned when they watched it, watched it backwards, they didn't realize that they started with part 2! Way to ruin an amazing movie. 😂

Me too. It was amazing.
Fun Historical Facts! 1.)The battle of Stirling was actually fought on a bridge and not a field 2.) Kilts wasn't around until the late 1300's 3.) No one painted they're faces blue.
Great overall movie! If you need encouragement or just proud of your Scottish heritage as I am, this is the movie to watch👍🏻
Those aren't fun facts! 😂
One of the most epic movies ever made!
and emotional
Also the most historical inaccurate movie every made, but one epic Hollywood movie.
I was 13 when this movie came out on theaters, when it ended, everyone got up and applauded and it was really emotional, I'm from Nicaragua, a country that it's been ruled by didactorship so I understand the anger and frustration of Scotland back in those days unfortunately still happens
Always loved Mel Gibson as an actor, he did tons of great films, but this one...Damn, his magnum opus. Best direction and best performance of his career imo. The betrayal scene just gets me every time, it's so heartbreaking and you can feel his frustration, sadness and disbelief just by the look in his eyes. Fantastic movie
He will always be Martin Riggs to me (and I'm a Scot) but I love it when he talks of Scotland, says he's never been back because he'd never be sober, we'd all be buying him drinks 😂
Hacksaw Ridge was bloody good as well. I flip back on forth on which of the two is my favourite movie directed by Gibson.
@@mitzee8621 It's so difficult to choose though. I'd even throw in Apocalypto for his directorial prowess.
It's a lot of crap and hardly anything in the movie is accurate it's absaloutaly insulting to me whome is Scottish and a proud Historian of his country is appalled by it

I cried so many times in this movie but the William’s death, crying out “Freedom”, Murron appearing in the crowd to greet him and comfort him, just wrecked me. First, when his brother and dad died with the flower, and at the end, she’s there to comfort him.

Isabella (The Queen) was a badass in her own right. She was known as The She-Wolf of France and basically led the effort to overthrow Edward II after he wound up in a stalemate with Robert the Bruce. She eventually succeeded, and had her son, Edward III, installed as King. As for Wallace, he was long dead before Isabella ever set foot on English soil.
And it was her son who had her lover, conspirator Roger Mortimer, hanged at Tyburn, despite her pleading, and confined her for quite some time on those estates he or his wife had not taken back.
This is one of the greatest movies ever. i always hate when the media says that "gladiator" reanimated this genre when braveheart clearly did this. it´s also some kind of harbinger for game of thrones and stuff.
i love every frame of this movie.
~you should try "dances with wolfes" theatrical cut.~
This is my favorite movie of all time and in my opinion, the best movie ever made. It's impossible to watch it without crying multiple times. After seeing it so many times, the music alone is enough to bring tears to eyes. Thank you for reviewing it. I loved seeing your reactions.
As a piper, I'm always reminded of that time when playing the bagpipes was a hangable offense. Much in the same way that clan tartans were forbidden as well, the English sought to suppress the culture at its roots. I've watched this movie at least 50 times in the last 25+ years and I've never once made it through without my cheeks covered in tears. Great choice and your reaction was genuine and heartfelt. Cheers from Alberta, Canada.
“Fight and you may die. Run, and you’ll live… at least a while. And dying in your beds, many years from now, would you be willin’ to trade all the days, from this day to that, for one chance, just one chance, to come back here and tell our enemies that they may take our lives, but they’ll never take… our freedom!”
Mel Gibson knows how to pull certain heartstrings... he did the same thing in his movie "The Patriot" (and played fast-and-loose with history in both movies).
If you like Sophie Marceau (the princess) in this... watch a little _comedy_ she did with David Spade called, "Lost and Found", to see what a great range she has. A very different character, but still lovable.
seen this over 60 times. I love when people who have no historic knowledge about this watch the movie, as they see the movie as Mel wanted people to see it, a celebration to William Wallace and not a documentary....Mel made this movie to bring attention to a hero of Scotland that he felt did not have enough recognition around the world.....how many millions around the world have heard of William Wallace now? because of Mel Gibson? How many have googled William Wallace since the movie came out? Mel did an extraordinary job of bringing world attention to the name William Wallace
I was in high school when this came out and I had to do a report on a historical figure for my history class and i chose William Wallace because of this movie. I have also seen this movie at least 60 times probably closer to 100. It is nice to see newer generations discovering classics like this.
The real history is that the Scottish king's heir (Margaret of Norway) had died at sea and died himself shortly after, Margaret was originally betrothed to King Edward's son Edward, so most of the Scottish nobility thought it was a good idea to have King Edward the protector of the Scottish crown until they could find a worthy heir, but King Edward had plans of his own, he gained the nickname "the hammer of the Scots" because of how brutal he was towards Scottish rebellion.
Braveheart remains one of my favorite movies of all time - such a fantastic film. Really enjoyed this one!

You ask why you are so emotional… it’s because you have a beautiful soul and are in touch with it. Embrace it and never lose it. Don’t become like the soulless multitude that currently zombify the land.
Really glad the number ended up as Braveheart. It is a brilliant film. A true inspirational story of fighting for freedom. Something everyone must do if our freedoms ever come under threat, because once you loose all yuor freedoms they will be incredibly hard to get back.
When you lose your freedoms and liberty there's gonna be unfortunately a lot of blood to get it back.
Unfortunately not very true, a lot of things are made up and frankly ridiculous. The timeline is squished up and such as well.
We’re still fighting for freedom to this day from the clutches of Westminster.
You have equal parts warrior and passion. Your responses make it clear. Seeing so many with plastic for a soul these days, you are a breath of fresh air.
In 1995 I went to see this in the cinema in Glasgow with my Norwegian friends. It was a sensation when it came out and won many Oscars. Even though it’s not entirely historically accurate it conveys the emotion felt by Scots perfectly.
I now live in London close to the Tower where he was kept prisoner before he was executed. There’s a pub just across the road called the Hung, Drawn and Quartered…which is what happened to him.
Great reaction. Thanks.
8 minutes in and no interruptions and unnecessary talking. So far so good. Good job at reacting. So far I'm a fan.
One of the best reactions to this movie I've ever seen.
It takes a brave heart to truly love and protect a special woman, I know because I am Irish
Has that ever happened where soemone sends the wife?"
Oh most certainly.. Queen Isabella of France was sent by King Edward II to negotiate with France.
Sweet reaction.
Your giddiness at some of the sweeter moments was adorable.
Funny how much you related to the queen considering how similar yall look.
I didn't relate to the queen, but I did feel sorry for her :D
It's one of the best of the 90s, and one of the best films ever imo. Fantastic reaction!
The flower she gives him is the thistle. The thistle is the flower of scotland. So the symbolism is pretty cool.

Lol my mom loves this too. It has everything, patriotism, betrayal, comedy, action, but I really see it as a love story. My mom puts this up there with “legends of the fall”. If u haven’t seen that, ask for your moms opinion.

It is impossible not to get emotional or cry with this movie... another very nice one to react to is Titanic.
Already seen Titanic :)
"Does that ever happen? Someone sends the wife to ask for a truce?"
It happened ALL THE TIME. It was easy to send a woman of the right rank to do negotiating. No loss of face involved.
They fought like warrior poets, they fought like Scotsman !!!
One of the best scores also! Love this movie, love the reaction also and can’t wait to see what’s next.
I'm so happy you loved this film. It won a bunch of oscars including best picture. Its my favorite.
Great idea to do a random pick for a reaction, hope this will be a common thing on your channel, makes it unpredictable. And yes, this is in many top movie lists for a good reason. I love that the movie doesn't shy away from showing the sacrifices people make to earn something that is rightfully theirs and that if you believe in a ideal that is good and genuinely worth fighting for, you do not let that die with you.
also Ius primae noctis wasn't a thing, easy to understan why in a very religious world where marriage is sacred
Bannockburn (1314) was fought over 2 days, not a single charge. But the Scots were indeed outnumbered 2:1 They won a great victory against Edward’s son Edward II (Edward I was dead).
It still took about 10 years for the English to recognise Scottish independence but that battle showed they could not hold Scotland. Robert the Bruce is the greatest king Scotland has ever had.
What Walt Disney did for animation, what George Lucas did for special effects, Mel Gibson did for graphic violence.
"what George Lucas did for special effects"
Lucas did nothing for SFX.
ILM did all of that, pls stop trying to give directors credit for the countless hours of work from the vastly more talented people he loves taking credit from - including the writers and directors of Empire Strikes Back and Return of the Jedi, anyone would think Lucas did all of that the way they are advertised.
If anything Lucas just took the guy (Douglas Trumbuil) that worked on 2001 and told him "make me a s**t load of that!"
That violence stands the test of time because it's just edits and blood packets. CGI ruined historical epics.
@@mnomadvfx Lucas founded the company in 1975. He created the environment for talented people to experiment and flourish. The company Lucas founded elevated special effects to a true art form. Always loved Princess Isabelle´s character arc aswell. When she first came to England she was way more vulnerable and without confidence and even her story is not part of the maiin story arc you can clearly see her growth in strength und confidence and at the end she is in control. That is a great example how to portray a strong woman. Being vulnerable and being strong at the same time. Imagine how both Characters, Isabelle and Wallace, would be portrayed today.
She was actually only 9 years old at the time of Wallace's death.
the scene where he picks up his girl for a ride in the nice scottish weather wasnt planned like this.. but it kept raining on the set and they went with it
What's always gotten me is that the historical account of Wallace's execution were even more painful and graphic than the one in the movie. Hard to imagine someone enduring that. Also the ending makes it seem like Robert the Bruce lead them to victory right after the execution, but the war actually took 23 more years before England relinquished control on Scotland. They truly earned their independence.
I read that they originally filmed that scene to be much more graphic, but it didn't do well with test audiences so they toned it down.
Actually, Wallace was executed in 1305 while the Battle of Bannockburn, which Robert the Bruce led Scotland to victory over England occurred in 1314, nine years later.
Such a great reaction. The emotion you show really comes across.
At the end when Murron shows up to take William home, that is where I lose it every time.
Yes, this is an amazing movie. I'm glad you decided to watch this and share your heartfelt reaction.
Even though this is a romantic version of the story, Wallace was actually a military genius. The Battle of Stirling was actually Stirling Bridge, Wallace used the bridge to his advantage called a "Fatal Funnel". There is a movie with Chris Pine and Florence Pugh called OUTLAW KING about the King Robert the Bruce that's also pretty good.
It's not a romantic version, it's based on a Scottish poem written during a time when Scottish nationalism and Anglophobia was rampant, so it favours the Scots and demonizes the English.
The reality is there were horrible things done from both sides, that's war
and the guy that played Quicksilver in the MCU played at Douglas. I didn't realize florence was in it that's cool, it's been awhile since I've seen it
Basically the definition of a "Kill zone". Stack em up, and make things difficult to move.
In my top 5 all time movie as well... I get choked up and cry every time I watch it. Musical score is so good and Mel Gibson really understands how to direct good drama..

I was a scrawny 14 year-old boy when I saw the, Thursday-midnight showing of this, on the night before it opened. I. WAS. BLOWN. AWAY. This film stirred a passion in me I had never felt before. The rush... was incredible... and I remember immediately going home afterwards and lifting weights until the sun came up. Years later, I actually got to tell that story to Mel while working on one of his other films, and he told me that after the very first screening of this movie, his producer looked at him and said, "little boys are going in to see your movie, and are coming out men."

As a Scotsman who grew up with this movie (I was 11 when this released)
It is easily in the top 5 best biopic movies ever made... Don't get me wrong, they did romanticise the historical story a fair bit (the whole romantic subplot with his wife and especially the princess is certainly not true lol) the movie still is a representation of the oppression of that time by England (again in those days everyone was oppressing everyone)
One of my all time favs and I'm glad you loved it :)
"again in those days everyone was oppressing everyone"
Looool - the Welsh weren't oppressing anyone, they were dead or crushed entirely flat by the campaigns of Longshanks previous to his interest in adding Scotland to his empire.
Compared to the fate of the Welsh the Scots were practically running through meadows of flowers in paradise.
By contrast Scotland suffered a short term if very bloody time in its history almost entirely down to internal squabbling of its own lords over the succession - with unity Edward I would have had nothing to exploit in the first place.
The era of significant English lordship over Scotland didn't even last half a century while this film often gives an impression it is bucking the tail end of an endless dominion..... sooooo, Wales then?
As the entire film is basically a gloriously inaccurate fanfic of Scottish history I don't see why he couldn't have just made a fantasy tale about the Welsh actually winning instead.
Almost everything you said was the same for me brother, I think I went with my school to see it. Shameful that it was shot in Ireland (good job Scottish Screen) and at no point in the score are there bag pipes 😂

I love that you didn't hide your eyes during the more intense scenes the way most people seem to.
I think you would like last of the mohicans for your next reaction it's really good if you don't have one picked out already.
Fantastic movie!
The big battle scenes were filmed in Ireland, because the filmmakers had wide open, flat plains there that were ideal for big battle scenes. Most of the extras in the battle scenes were real Irish soldiers, and they used soldiers from the regular army on one side, facing soldiers from the reserves on the other side, so the rivalry between the two sides resulted in some genuine aggression and there were some real injuries in the fighting too.
I knew when you kept saying how sad certain parts were and I kept saying to myself “oh… it’s going to get worse”. It is a beautiful movie. I grew up on this movie.. heavily edited of course since it’s not really appropriate for a 10 yr old. Haha great reaction. Thank your mom for her recommendation.
What they show in the film of the 'purification', and execution was tame in comparison to what they actually did to Wallace. I really appreciate the way Longshanks was portrayed. Cruel, treacherous, very easy to hate. He's certainly not incompetent, or clueless though. A formidable enemy to be sure.
People saying this is historically inaccurate are of course correct, but I think are missing the point a little. William Wallace has status as a legendary character. In other words, even at the time, there was a large gap between the real man and the stories told about him. The scene in the movie where they're talking about how many men Wallace supposedly killed and it keeps increasing is probably the most historically accurate thing in the movie, as that's almost certainly how the tales would have gone.
So from way back in the 13th century till now, it's hard to say what Wallace as a person was really like, and what all he actually did in between the relative handful of properly recorded facts/locations/dates regarding him.
So the movie is a legendary style retelling of an already legendary character, and I think it works really well in that way.
the betrayal scene is so painful. Mel Gibson acting is so great even without dialogs
26:16 I love how people who watch this are just not ready for how real the battles are. And you thought the battle of the bastards was realistic lol. Braveheart inspired every medieval battle in cinema afterwards.
Great film and your reaction was so good. One of those movies that is good to rewatch every few years. Another very good one from the same year is Rob Roy set in about the same time period.
I saw this in the theater 3 time when it came out in 95! So good. I was born in Scotland. I have family & friends there they said when the movie ended everyone stood up and cheered.
I'm so happy that after scrolling down your comments, I don't see so much as one person whining about _historical accuracy_ which is unusual on a Braveheart reaction. Just remember that the people who whine because Mel Gibson took a mixture of myth, legend and definite fact and melded into a *Scotland is amazing* movie feel the need to point out the fictions for a very particular reason, and it reflects *very badly* on those people ☺
ohhhh there has been many in the comments
I have read maybe 30 comments about it so far 😅
Last samurai and Braveheart are two of the best movies ever made, your reaction to them both was awesome
My first viewing of a Norwegian-Domenican reactor. Well done. Braveheart won the Oscar (Academy Award) for best picture. It was a surprising but deserving winner.
A film that purports to be an historical account, but spurns the truth as much as this one does, is NOT worthy of an Oscar, by any stretch of the imagination. I don't think there is one historical fact here, and far too much fiction and pure invention.
Hi from Sheffield Yorkshire England this is probably the best historic film that's been made
This movie is amazing, your reaction was awesome and your bf is so lucky.
One of the greatest reaction of brave heart on RUclips, and i watched them all i guess. You really felt the movie and showed every important scene and reacted to it.
Thanks
Absolutely loved your reaction. You made a great movie even better.
