- Top level review of my 2014 Yamaha Super Tenere ES after 5 years of ownership. I highlight my rationale for buying the bike and provide my perspective on reliability, performance, areas that need improving, my add-ons to the bike, and an overall assessment.

A friendly tip from a fellow S10 (2015) owner:
I have read a number of complaints re the locking mechanism on the proprietary panniers. While they are certainly not the smoothest devices ever produced, I don’t believe they deserve the negative press.
If one takes a moment to learn the lock’s “idiot-syncrasys”, he would doubtless find that they work reliably all the time. The trick is to relieve the tension on the locking hook by pressing down on the lock end of the lid before trying to turn the key. Same whether you are opening or closing the lid. A minor inconvenience at best.
A second problem which I incurred was that on one occasion I turned the key to unlock the lid only to have the whole tumbler come out of the box, still impaled on the key. I was on tour and had to hire a locksmith to open things up for me.
However he gave me the advice which permanently fixed the problem and I now offer to you:
As a preemptive measure open each pannier and pry off the protective rubber pucks off each lock. Then remove the two tiny screws per lock that will be revealed. Locktite them and reinstall all parts. You should not have to worry about them again.

Nice review. I’m currently looking for a Super Tenere. Interesting...in 2014 I too was looking for a new bike, the Tenere was the first one I tried, demo’d the GS, Triumph, ...wound up buying the 1190 in Aug 2014! Sounds like you’ve had a much better experience than I have. Reliability now top of my list.

Thank you for the great review Sir!! I had the same painful process in choosing my Super Tenere. For me is was all about function and reliability. Yours is really well sorted. And yes the power is plenty. You took all the words out of my mouth when describing it. I'm more of a dirt bike guy and really love this bike. My biggest complaint is the weight when traveling off the highway. As long as I remember to respect where it can go then it's all good.
My ergonomic mods include The Helibars risers and an enlarged dirt bike style footpad bolted on the brake.

Great bike man I bought mine in Florida rode it around a few southern states for near 2 yrs then took it home to Ireland and our small roads in Ireland are great for riding on and I've just come back from a 6 day trip in the highlands of Scotland. I just love the super ten.Ticks all the boxes for me but it's only let down is the outdated headlights I think most run led now.

Love a good honest review. I hope Yamaha puts this thing on a diet and does suspension changes for some better off road handling and ride. They are not that far off from dethroning the BMW,it's already more reliable and cheaper to work on.

Very nice intro. I want a drone so bad. I agree with you assessment of the ST. It's a fantastic machine. You are absolutely correct about the OEM cases. They are the only disappointment. As for power, I wouldn't mind more power simply because I'm power nut but for what it is the ST has enough. Great video.

Nice review. Thanks. Just picked mine up this year. They are comfortable, plenty power and fabulous brakes. Plus the shaft drive on these are perfection and MUCH more reliable than the GS bike. Engine is bulletproof on these as well. 👍
Mine has a pesky final drive sweating leak I can’t figure out, I replaced the seals in the pumpkin and it came back😒 other than that great!
Hey shadow good review on the ST I looked at a 2016 ST but I got a HD but what turn away from the s t was a group of riders who rode that style of bike well on the cruiser side the road was full but I think if I could do both I would sure get the Yamaha super tenere to give you that change again thanks on your review looking forward to your adventure

Just rented a 2018 Super Tenere from Eaglerider ($75 per day) for a 2,200 mile trip from Long Beach, CA to Portland, OR and back. FYI, I was trying for an Iron butt but hit a 2-3 hour construction delay on the 5 north of Redding, ended my attempt. I'll get it eventually. It was a great trip doing D1>580, D2>421, D5>407, D6>804 riding days and everything you said about the bike is spot on. I'm 6'3" over 50 and my body never once wanted to give up. Even the suggestions for the next-gen release. I'm thinking when the Raid Edition comes to the US I might just pick it up. Although I can't say the bike was 100%, I picked it up with only 2k miles on it and returned it with 4k. From day one the Power Socket didn't function, probably a blown fuse because they washed the bike with the rubber cap not fitting on top of the socket plug. (I didn't discover the power port issue until early morning just when I was ready to leave. Otherwise, I wouldn't have accepted the bike. Then the day before we returned home, the right fork seal was showing signs of leakage. The ride was a little less comfortable on the way home, definitely some vibes in the right bar from the bad shock. My right hand still has some numbness otherwise I was completely happy with it. Upon returning the ST it gained non-op status because of the fork leak.

Great review man, I really appreciate your candor & honesty in your descriptions both + & -. I’m selling my 2019 FLHT and looking for a Super T to replace it. I’ve owned and ridden every brand of bike available here in the USA in my lifetime and I’m now going to Adventure Bike as I see a future for our nation where this type of bike will be an asset at least and a necessity in the worst case scenario. I’ve found Yamaha products to be as reliable as an anvil and from your and others descriptions the Super T is no exception. I too am a San Antonio born boy although I grew up in Boerne. I hope to be able to meet you on my next trip that way and perhaps we can get a cup of coffee and get a little deeper into this bike. Ride On.

Great review. I have a 2017 Tenere and it has been great. I do a lot of two up riding and this thing is awesome. I had two Triumph Explorers and they were so top heavy, 36K on both of them. If you are talking about the MRA touring screen on the S10 you will love the thing. I love the fact you can easily work on the Super Tenere. I did put Bumont cans and those are outstanding....I do a lot of two up riding and we put 13K miles on it in less than a year. Totally agree on the electric wind screen and price. Power...how much do you need? I have had bikes with 160Hp and nice to have but not needed. Agree this is my favorite bike of all my bikes. Keep up the reviews...

This pretty much shadows my thoughts on the bike. I did get to test the crash bars on mine during a recent 5,000 mile trip. We were parked in a parking lot having a quick break and taking off some extra clothes as the day was getting warmer. I made the mistake of not paying attention as to which direction I had it parked and a strong gust of wind hit it broadside and knocked it over. My bars got gouged up from the pavement, my right side pannier was partly crushed and the pannier racks were bent. We only had 4 days left in our trip so I waited until we got home to attempt any repairs. The pannier has been replaced, I had to removed the frames from the bike to straighten them out. Man are they ever tough! The crash bars required some work with a file to take out the deepest scratches followed by wet sanding with 400 and 600 and finally 3 or 4 coats of satin black rust paint. They look like new and you can't tell they ever got hit. As for the trip we did 5,000 miles in 11 days, 10 nights. We left home in Northern Alberta on June 12th drove south through AB, MT, WY, CO, then west through UT, NV, CA. We hit the coast just on the north side of San Francisco and followed the coast up to OR, and into WA. I had a new set of tires installed in Vancouver WA. We cut over to Yakima and then north into BC Canada and then east into AB again then all the way back north to get home arriving at 5PM on the 22nd.

Had the pleasure of owning a 2016 S10ES. An incredible machine. We took the S10 on a 23 day 9836 km motorcycle adventure from Medellin Colombia, passing thru Ecuador and encompassing various cities in Peru including the famous Canon Del Pato. In Cusco (+-4200km) we changed the oil & oil filter. For the rest of the trip we just added fuel. No issues whatsoever with the Super Tenere. Not even a flat tire. You're spot on about the factory side cases. I've only had my 2018 Super Tenere for 4 months and I know that they will eventually have to be replaced. In addition to the finicky locks, they just feel cheap. You mention that you mainly ride on roads. Have you done any off-road riding? I've been on cruisers and touring bikes most of my riding life and decided (after retirement) that I wanted to give adventure riding and moto-camping a try. I'm still on stock tires so I've only dabbled in a little off-road riding. Curious as to your experiences off-road. Thanks.
Nice bike. Mine is a 2012 and it’s been great. For such a big bike everything about it is easy. Low maintenance, excellent brakes and comfortable.
Me too. I have thr 2012 that I own since 2014. The first repair that I did is the one I did few days ago which is changing the fork seals
The kind of bike that can take you around the world and then drive to work everyday with preventative maintenance. I would take the cases to a locksmith and have them install new locks with a few extra keys cut. Does the seat bead pad help from getting sore on long runs. Good video of another satisfied Yamaha customer.

I bought mine on 16 Aug 2019, and loving every moment. Just the headlights that shine a bit high. Still want to adjust them.

Some say that shaft is javing problems after 60 or 70.000 kms... have you had any issues?? Great review, man!!
I decided to get rid of mine. I remember when I was in the buying process I used to watch your videos. The Super Tenere is a great bike, but the negatives for me, for this bike are:
1- Uncivilized engine that makes too much unnecessary noise;
2- Too high, having to climb on and off that thing everytime you need to get on or off;
3- Suspension is good but the weight transfer everytime you break gets old really quick.
I'm getting a 2019 FJR1300ES instead. No point in having an adventure bike if you're not doing to go offroad. Plus the inline 4 cylinder engine is super smooth.

I have the non ES version and I have never felt the need to have one...I do a 3 sec adjustement between when I ride with my wife and when I ride alone...
Hey Shadow, thanks for the vid. I will be buying an "adventure" bike in the next two to three years and thus will be my retirement gift. My wife and I plan on doing an extensive amount of travelling on it but we will rarely be doing more than 300 miles per day. As we plan on being gone for weeks if not months at a time, I am curious if your significant other joins you on your travels and if your comments on "powerful enough" would still be your message, if they did? I am 220lbs and the wife around 125lbs, so about 350lbs plus luggage, tools, etc. Shaft drive and comfort are very high on my list. I would love to try the KTM but because of it seat and chain, it's out. TIA

Thanks for the great review. How many miles do you have? I have a '17 ES with 49,000 miles. So far zero issues with normal maintenance. Valve check at 40k but totally in spec. I went with the Givi Trekker Bags and love them, bigger and bulletproof. I have a set of Rigid floods wired to my high beam switch and can't speak highly enough of Rigid. I run it on 87 octane and have no issues with that. I will upgrade if Yamaha adds cornering ABS on the next model and will not upgrade if the do not. I'd also like to see lean sensitive TC, more power and lighter weight, but the cornering ABS is the only thing that will get my new money. Frankly I prefer mechanical gauges over a digital or TFT dash, less to break.
You make a good point on TFT vs mechanical gauges.....fewer things to break
I have 2013 yam super tenere with 18500 miles it likes to burn or leak oil does anyone else have same issue? And know the solution?

Good review. I have never spent a lot of time on big bikes. I'm a 250 enduro rider, but am thinking about getting a larger bike. I live in Taiwan and the temperature is over ninety degrees almost every day from May - September and very humid. Does the Tenere get really hot when you ride it. Even my 250 can kick out a lot of heat when I stop at a stop light.
With the radiator on the left, it can get hot sometimes on the leg, but I can live with it

I have done 190km/h for 200km straight. No issues with stability and it is super comfortable. I should add that I had the givi windshield and wind deflectors on the side as well as earplugs...
How many miles do you have on it and have you had the valves checked? Also, have you had the throttle bodies synced at the recommended intervals?
Ive been good with the thottle body sync. I only recently had the valves checked. Im approaching 40k miles

After 5-6 hrs in the saddle I just want to stop for the day.
Now that is a good question. I don't know why motorcycle manufacturers can't make comfortable seats for their motorcycles. What about memoryfoam seats? What about a factory airbladder seat? What about a messaging seat? Why do riders have to turn to the aftermarket in order to find decent seating options? I don't understand it.

Has your Goldwing seriously cut into your Super Tenere riding time?
I have the exact same bike. Don't you find the side stand to be poorly designed? The bike doesn't lean over far enough on it so it feels tippy. It's a good thing that the Supa T comes with a center stand.
You may have a point...the side stand could be better
I agree, part of the blame falls on the rear spring rate. It is too soft and the bike sags too much when loaded for a long trip, this makes the lean angle very critical. Due to this my bike took a tumble when a gust blew it over in a parking lot.

I think I still have time to wait for the next gen with up grades, but likely staying with Yamaha reliability.
You dodged more than two bullets with the GS(A)1200 and the KTM 1200 Adv.
Both bikes have nowhere near the pristine reliability that the XTZ 1200 has.
sound quality bad, can not hear good.
