I have been driving these for over 10 years and know them inside out.
    1) IMPORTANT - The radiator has an internal gearbox oil cooler at the bottom - if you are experiencing any sort of gear shift problem then make sure the water and gearbox oil have not mixed - do this before doing any other job or spending money. If gearbox is ok only then proceed to change the radiator obviously if the gearbox has suffered any sort of water contamination then its a replacement gearbox.
    2) The brake judder can also be steering rack bushes - this is a 5 minute job if you bushes the bushes with the carrier otherwise your garage will need a hydraulic press.
    3) The speaker is a common problem aswell - only way to replace it is remove the rear seats for access - not a hard job but just need to be methodical - some people have just used silicone to repair the speaker cone from the top - could be worth a try.
    4) The failed rear quarter windows can only be replaced.
    5) My guess is your bonnet struts will also be shot along with the steering adjust motors???
    6) Suspension wise - you will need to put it on a ramp and inspect to which part needs replacing - the air shocks are generally quite reliable aslong as they havent developed a leak.
    7) If you want to keep the smooth braking then either use Genuine discs and pads - they are not that expensive from www.lexuspartsdirect.co.uk. If you go for cheap parts you will get groaning on stopping which will ruin the silence.
    8) The Cambelt needs changing every 10 years or 100k miles whichever is earlier.
If you need second hand spares try Pual Frost @ Lexus Spars Direct - not to be confused with the company mentioned above which is a main dealer.

++ for steering bushes. Also replace tie rods inner and outer as they can cause (and at the same time hide) front brake problems. I hate the term “Warped discs/hotspots” they are a thing of the 90’s and and a problem invented by cheap mechanics to get you to pay for new discs and pads which are a cheap and quick fix for them - cherching £££- at your local K.F. Ive worked with Asin brakes for years and yes cheap pads and discs will give you problems but a great big hunk of iron is not easily warped by a lexus driver. 90% of the time its all the steering bushes from uk pot holes and in a heavy car like that the ball joints to

Amazing how much satisfaction you can get in finding a good old luxury car, you get so much more pleasure out of driving these older luxury barges than new soulless new ones. Also these reviews are more ‘real’ to most of us, than watching the latest Ferrari, Aston Lamborghini being delivered to another RUclipsr...where the carbon pack costs more than this car will set you back, even after the few grand you put into it.

There is something very appealing about these big old Lexus's. The prospect of wafting about in this luxury barge with more toys than Hamleys, insulated from the world, and all for the price of a well worn Fiesta is almost too tempting to resist! You seem to have found a very nice example that has had TLC in the past so hopefully it won't be too much of a money pit! Look forward to Pt2.

Ohh god! Check its not coming from the integrated transmission cooler at the bottom of the radiator!!! These fittings go bad and mine separated from the cooler and dumped all the transmission fluid on the road and as a result completely destroyed the transmission!!! Replace that radiator as an absolute priority!!! This is pretty much the only major mechanical issue on both gens of the LS430!

    • @edwardmurray9567
      @edwardmurray9567 3 года назад

Also! Just to address the window and the rear sub rattle.. the double pane windows unfortunately do ‘seporate’ and cannot be repaired, the only solution is replacement. The ML speakers (including the sub) suffer from the foam around the speaker edge disintegrating, very easily replaced just look up refoaming kit for ls430 ml speakers 👍🏻

Great video, thanks! I presently drive a Lexus LS 430 UL 2001 which I bought less than a year ago at 222 000 km. One previous owner, a retired senior manager with Toyota in this country. I received a full documented service history which seems quite substantial and so I hope I can lopk forward to ownership without too many hassles. I did discover some underbody rust which I had a competent person repair. I also drive a Polestar2 EV dual motor AWD. Both are great cars in their own right and delightful to drive in pretty different ways. I had a few doubts about going 100% electric which was one of the reasons I purchased the Lexus. And sure enough, a few weeks ago the Lexus really saved the day: The Polestar was totally dead due to some software glitch. It had to be hauled away for service on a flatbed truck. First time I´ve experienced that in my 50+ years as a driver. The Lexus started at the turn of the key!

The speaker he's talking about is the subwoofer behind the head of the center rear passenger seat. Its NOT BROKEN, the foam ring that insulates it from vibration simply deteriorates after a while and needs to be replaced. Its a cheap piece of foam that's the issue.
You can cut into the liner to access the screws holding the subwoofer down, or you can do it the proper way and remove half of the rear interior to access the subwoofer for a repair.

I've got a '98 LS400... now has 370,000km... had it for 13 years... I bypassed the radiator / atf oil cooler part & fitted on oversized transmission cooler... the theory is if the atf never goes over 70C & change atf every 70,000km it will never wear out... EVER... Remove cold air intake, that's makes the engine sound much better... i removed the 2 rear mufflers, replaced with straight pipes... sounds really nice.. hardly increased noise but sounds way better as std exhaust has no sound whatsoever... I'm an LS nut so feel free to ask me anything.... i had to change the rear sub also..... I put the battery in the boot, it handles quick left to right turns better as you've removed a 60lb ballast off the front L/H wheel & being in the boot it never gets hot and that engine bay heat reduces battery life by 50%.... happy motoring...

We got leant an LS600h for a couple of days and it was incredible, the most luxurious car I've ever driven and insanely quick too for it's size (bearing in mind my own car at the time was a 1.8 Focus Zetec!). I literally couldn't find one thing I didn't like, you just felt utterly cushioned as it wafted along effortlessly. I'm not too sure the hybrid was doing much for the planet though! If I remember correctly we had the GS 450h a little while later and that was incredible too. Lexus and VW were the best at giving out demos for the weekend!

My 2001 had both front hub bearings go. Luckily they were not too difficult to replace.
As for the ML sub, usually the speaker itself is fine and all it needs is a repair. The foam lining can tear over time, when that happens it can sound horrible. If it just needs the foam surround then it’s a very cheap fix. Otherwise removing and replacing the sub can be pricy and a royal pain.

Looks like the passenger side headlight and fog light have been recently replaced. Usually an indicator of a shunt in the past. If it was just the headlight you'd think maybe a broken headlight but the fog light too makes you think it was something more serious. Often prior accidents don't show up in VIN checks when "uncle Bob", or his friend, did the fix on the quick. ;-)

These 1 or 2 owner 10 or 20 year old premium motors are an absolute joy. I’m a seller of such more than a buyer of such, but all those looking for a bargain should consider the premium worth paying for pampered cars. Never owned a Lexus but I can imagine they’re kind of bullet proof.

Love a nice Lexus. I don't think the LS430 is quite as elegant or as classic looking as the original LS400, but it's still a very likable car with lots of presence. This or a W220 S-Class? I'd choose the Lexus every time.

wow you got the ultra luxury package. that model has alot of filters to change. you have filters under your front and rear seats, one in the dash, one in the trunk and i think one on the bottom of the b pillar. theres a video here that shows how to replace them. oh one thing you should do is buy a sprint booster throttle controller, it wakes the car up. its a plug and play part. i have mine for over a decade with no problems

And easy way to solve the problem of the smoker is to buy a living air, and ionizing machine and let it sit in the car for a couple nights then give it a good wash down inside with this dish soap and water and then let it sit in the sun with the windows up it takes about 3 to 5 days to air the whole thing out but the ionizer will change the charge on the particles that create the odour basically sterilize the air it works well I put it in my car once a year overnight in the garage. I have a 2001 LS 430 but no smoker

I have an 2006. It's one of the best cars I've owned. The seats are as comfortable as a favorite recliner. Just got rid of one of these. Silicon spray down the window runners solves the sticky window. Replacing the rear speaker is a nightmare too. The Mark levinson amp is very sensitive to what ohms it runs with. The Lexus owner club does have some aftermarket alternatives you can use but it’s a ball ache. Check the lower suspension bushes too. Very expensive to replace each one. There are poly bushes available but the car creaks bad then due to the lack of give.
Expect stupid questions too. I was asked about what I’d used in the washer fluid bottle for example. Did you find the coolbox in the back?
