Brandi is quite a story in herself! She dropped out of High School because she knew what she wanted to do with her life already, PERFORM! She came out as gay when she was 15 years old and has never been invited to a dance or a party. She has a very soft spot in her heart for people that are "Misfits" which I believe is what this song is about. "To receive fame and acclaims would be nice" she says, but it is all about trying each day to make people happy! She has played to thousands at Madison Square Gardens in New York, hundreds in local High Schools or what ever venue that would have her. She goes to a local women's penitentiary each year to perform at Christmas time for inmates in the cafeteria. That is just who she is!

Her song The Story is the soundtrack of my life, and her song The Mother makes me want my uterus back so I can have another baby, a girl, and name her Evangeline. Please look up Benicio Bryant’s AGT audition. He and Brandi are from the same hometown and had sung it together at his school. Then he sang The Joke for his AGT audition, and it was absolutely stunning. I don’t think anyone else on earth besides that sweet little boy could have pulled that off.

The Highwomen's "Highwomen" is phenomenal, too -- women's stories of sacrifice for others throughout history from a woman escaping Honduras through Mexico to the US to save her children to a woman who was a healer being hung as a witch in Salem to a woman who was killed on a bus as part of the Freedom Riders protests. Brandi Carlile co-wrote it with Amanda Shires, another musician in the band. Well worth a listen.
You would like Brandi's performance of "The Joke "(LIVE at the 61st GRAMMYs) She blew the audience away and got two standing ovations. It was awesome. Good reaction.
I'm so glad you've discovered Brandi Carlile. I honestly can't believe more people have not. You won't go wrong with anything she does. Her voice is so incredibly beautiful and versatile, her range incredible. I recommend The Story (which you might recognize from a car commercial several years back), The Eye, Raise Hell, The Mother, Hard Way Home, and Hold Out Your Hand.
