The real life story behind this movie is so absolutely heartbreaking.. 6 sons & only one remains alive today.. Fritz dying of brain & lung cancer.. The various ways in which all the brothers die.. The fact that every 2 or 3 years Kevin would lose another member of his family.. That poor man has been through so very much in his life.. This story has always gotten to me & they did such a great job with the majority of this movie.. Add in the fact that a couple of the wrestlers they feature in this, Bruiser Brody & Gino Hernandez, were also taken far too soon & met such grim ends to murder & overdose adds to it as well (or at least it did for me).. And the fact that Chavo Guerrero, Jr. was the actors' coach behind the scenes & he is the nephew of the late Eddie Guerrero, who we also lost way too soon.. This movie is surrounded by SO much loss & heartbreak & yet is SUCH a powerful, amazing film.. Thanks for watching this, Matty..❤

The story of the Von Erichs has been likened unto a Greek Tragedy.
True to form, the scene of Kerry on the boat on his way to the afterlife; paying a coin as fare to Charon the Ferryman.

If you're ready for more heartbreak the movie didn't talk about a few things:
David was married to his second wife at the time of his passing. His first marriage ended after their 13-week-old daughter died of SIDS.
Kerry had been married and had two daughters at the time of his passing as well. One of Kerry's daughters tried her hand at wrestling for a few years but ended up retiring.

Big fan of Wwf/Wwe from late 80’s to 2000 basically. The main draw and appeal is that it’s these super hero looking, buffed up good guys fighting super villain looking buffed up alpha bad guys. The wrestlers from back then were either jacked or full of personality, so as a dude it was awesome seeing these colorful alpha characters go at it. Jeremy Allen Whites character, I remember him from Wwe in the early 90’s. He was pretty popular with the fans and had a fantastic look but never quite accented to superstar level and I always wondered why as a kid. The Ric Flair guy on here, that guy was real and a super legit popular bad guy character from wrestling who was more known for his charisma and flamboyance and awesome ability at talking rather than being known for being big or buff.

I watched WCCW on a July afternoon in 1983. I was already a fan. I read about the Von Erichs in 1981 because I'm a Boston native and all we had was WWF because all over the country there were territories and 3 organizations, the WWF (later WWE), NWA and AWA. We got an NWA feed from Dallas starting in 1982. I really liked David. I was 15-16 years old and had posters of him on my wall.
Anyway, on that July day in 1983, the WCCW main event was Kevin Von Erich vs Harley Race for the title. Kevin hurt his shoulder and David tried to get Kevin to throw in the towel. Race kicked David and David ran into the ring and beat on Race. Then a voice in my head said "This is what I want to do" . Then, when David died in Japan, so did my dream. I was going to salvage it and try for the WWF, but it became children's programming.
The reason the movie went from non-stop happy to non-stop depressing is because when David died, the promotion's popularity started to wane. Kerry's title reign lasted only 18 days only to lose it back to Ric Flair in Japan. David was going to be champion for a year because he was reliable, went to every match, was great on the mic and did well in other territories. People in the industry believe a David Von Erich title would have made the WCCW promotion so big that even a Hulk Hogan led WWF wouldn't have been able to keep up.

The curse was the lesson that Fritz Von Erich imparted on his sons, which is to never show any weakness to anyone and that crying is a sign of weakness. This led to the brothers apart from Kevin closing themselves off from the world and becoming detached from everyone around them, despite their love for their family.
In the end, when Marshall and Ross told their dad that it's okay to cry and show emotions, that's when the curse ended. Very poetic. God bless Pam for being Kevin's pillar of hope during his lowest point.

i went to see this movie bc i heard it was a good movie and the guy i liked wanted to see it so we saw it together. i have 0 sports/athletics knowledge or interest so i was expecting it to just be a decent sports film, but i was not at all prepared for the onslaught of grief and loss. by the end of the movie i was crying all over my date’s lap in the theater and my first break down was when kevin’s wife was watching him hold back his tears at his second brothers funeral. then kerry’s last scene where kevin finds him and carries his body, still dripping brain matter… and of course the ending scene with kevin’s sons made me burst into tears again. so much of the movie man i was just CRYING sm.

My mama would go and see them every Friday night at what was then, the Sportatorium here in Dallas. She left us kids alone and we would watch wrestling on TV at 10 pm. I would keep looking in the audience to see her but never did. I remember watching ALL of them, including the dad, and they just kept dwindling out. I loved watching Chief Wahoo McDaniel. The Von Erich’s were really good looking and that’s what most people cared about. We wanted them to win but we’d rather just look at them.

One thing Kevin did not like about this movie was the portrayal of his father. He understood that for a movie or story to work it would need to have some sort of antagonist. But he has always described his father as a "decent and honorable man," and blames the deaths of his brothers who took their own lives on alcohol and drug abuse.

The character Jeremy Allen White played, Kerry, he was actually really tall in addition to being built like a body building super hero. He had a perfect wrestling look. That was the only criticism with Jeremy Allen White being cast as him, a perfect casting choice other than Jeremy being very short and it shows in the film. Kerry was 6’2 in real life. Also, the actor that played Ric Flair, didn’t think he was a good casting choice. He played the smack talking villain part right but Ric was so much more than that and he was so unique, like a unicorn. It’s just really hard to find good casting for him to do him Justice.

Wrestling is an incredibly hard business to begin with. You give your health and wellness away to entertain other people and their kids, instead of being with your own family. Adding family pressure on top of that, combined with the things you can easily end up doing to ease your pain, it becomes a minefield. There's a reason why so many have died under 40. God bless them all and may they all rest in peace.

While it was true Mike didn't like wrestling to the degree of his brothers it's false that he only started wrestling after David's death. Mike like the rest of his siblings started very early and he wrestled alongside his brothers quite a few times way before a lot of the tragedies. Mike may not have been as physically imposing as the rest of his brothers but in real life he was 6 feet tall so he did inherit the height and was definitely a lot tougher than the movie portrayed but he certainly was shy and less confident.

I remember the day Kerry passed away, I was only a kid back the and it was one of the first famous people I got news that they passed away.
There was one more brother, Chris, who committed suicide in 91.
Mike died from an overdose in japan if the stories from other wrestlers is to be believed.
Kerry broke his foot but didn't lose it at that time. However, Fritz got him to start training in the ring prematurely, and Kerry hurt his foot even more, resulting in amputation. It was quite well-known within pro wrestling that Kerry had an artificial foot. Not outside of pro wrestling, tho. Kerry was let go from WWF because of steroids and he was arrested for drug possession. While on probation for that, he again got arrested for drug possession and was facing a prison sentence. Bwfore he was sentenced, he ended his life. There was also two infant death's in two of the other bothers families. Jack Jr was electrocuted and fell into the melted snow and drown in the water.

The thing most ppl don’t get abt wrestling is ur body takes a beating worse then most other sports . Ur their not getting hit , but their getting slammed on the mat prob thousands of times every year . The scheduling too is terrible , especially in wwe . Like they’ll have 3-5 shows every week in different states and towns plus the 2 tv tapings and then the big PLE/ppv they’ll have . Thats why a lot of ppl in wrestling were mainly big strong guys , cause they’re always training so their body can be prepared for that . They never get a real rest , cause their either training or wrestling or traveling (which they travel a lot )

But the nfl dudes get months off every year , ufc dudes only fight 2-3 times a year . And also its why u see a lot of wrestlers dating/ marrying other wrestlers , if ur in wwe and ur dating someone who’s not apart of wwe in anyway you’ll prob hardly ever see them
