I live in jamaica only time i go to stores like this is for the air-conditioning. I buy my fruits and veggies at the open market not at stores like this. I buy beef tenderloin (filet mignon) at the local butcher $6 u.s per pound. Only rich Jamaicans shop at this store. This video doesn't show you where the average Jamaicans shop. This is a tourist video.
I shop at Shoppers Fair which is also owned by the Progressive Group. Those supermarkets are very very reasonable. I used to think they were expensive but the first time I went to shop there I was surprised at the prices.
In terms of prices, Progressive Foods is akin to shopping at Waitrose in London! I'm UK born of Jamaican parents, and whenever I visit Montego Bay I love browsing the aisles at Progressive Foods, but rarely do a full weekly shop there.
Vegetables are super high, way cheaper in Canada 🇨🇦. Even the things we get from Jamaica. I believe you can purchase the vegetables in the outdoor markets for cheaper.
You're hilarious! Your video is so entertaining. Am loving it! Along with your British sense of humour! 😂 BTW, breadfruit is very good to eat. It prevents heart attack and heart disease. I am watching from London. Jamaica do more imports than exports based on food.
Wow definitely more cosmopolitan than where I live 🙄 Most of my Asian stuff comes via India, through Germany. So lucky really. Very interesting Stevo 👍
The average Jamaican don’t shop at these stores. Check out the local market or what is called farmers markets, there you’ll find real organic authentic Jamaican products. The price is way cheaper than this place you’re at. Link up with one of the honest locals, they’ll take you to these local places. Enjoy your content, keep making more ❤
If the video was taken after Hurricane Beryl then this might explain the higher prices for fruits, vegetables and ground provisions. But in general buying certain foods at the supermarket isn’t cheap
EVEN IN THE CARANATION MARKET DOWN TOWN FOOD IS EXPENSIVE IN JAMAICA. THE POOR PEOPLE IN THIS ISLAND ARE STRUGGLING TO LIVE. I lIVED IN A BRITISH TERITORY WHICH IS EXPENSIVE BUT THIS ISLAND IS WORST. ITS NOT A GOOD ISLAND TO RETIRE BUT ITS A BUTIFUL PLACE TO VISIT.
Thos is what I'm trying to say too. Some only thing because is market it's "cheap". Not everything is cheap, some things even more expensive. Just last month tomato was premium price,. And you have to shop around for long plus no parking nearby. And chance of possible robbery. It's not as easy unless you take taxi and plan the whole morning.
Steven Heapes Recipe, whenever you go to shop for food go to the Cornation Market or ant market depends on where you live. Everything is not so bad. You have to just shop around, in open market or from street side vendors. New York is very expensive also, and other areas of the world. Alot of free food is availabeyou could just ask. Alot of neighbours have ackee trees, breadfruit trees, calloloo etc, lt depend on where you live. You could barter if you have something they dont have. Keep Up The Good Work. Blessings.
Where can you park to shop at the Coronation Market. I passed a fee times and not sure where to legally stop. Plus what's best time to go? And is there any issues with theft?
Buying in Jamaica is costly especially when there's any disaster like rain, or storm the seller sell for double the amount ,even when the government compensate them there's no choice for us.
That's if you go there. I don't know where a "market" is maybe by Shortwood road. So most items, I know a lot get in supermarkets. Where us parking in relation to Coronation market? I also know some by Loshusan but that's not cheap.
You said that there must be a lot of Chinese in Jamaica, I can guarantee you that very supermarket you are shopping in is owned by Chinese, 95% of the Supermarkets in Jamaica are owned by Chinese Jamaican families that have been in Jamaica for generations since the mid 1800's.
Ahahahahah, are you crazy bro, Only rich people shopping at these places bro, The average Jamaican shop at the open market in their town, or the little corner shop, These place are for criminals, politician's, business criminal of the country, Regular Jamaicans can't shopping here bro, People like me only drive pass these places in a bus, or taxi, so you are jus highlighting rich people place, watching from Spanish town Jamaica west Indies !!.
@peterfong2241: if you can't afford to shop here, why are you putting down other Jamaicans who can, by calling them criminals, your envy of your fellow Jamaicans comes through clearly through your response, everyone is not on the same level, so if some people can afford to shop in the high end stories why be negative, shop where you can afford.
@zuzu-oi5ki Absolutely, no need to denigrate folks who can afford to shop there. Growing up in Jamaica, I used to look in from the outside of these supermarkets and wished I could get a summer job as a bagger. Never committed any crime, made a lot of sacrifice. Lived paycheck to paycheck. I can afford to shop in any supermarket with cost of items not being a concern.
@StevenHeapRecipes which majority? There's the fruits and food stands in front Loshusan I onow. There's some vendors along Shortwood rod. Where is parking in relation to Coronation market? I tried before and was hassled every step of the way. I also don't think it's that much cheaper if you really check some items. Non perishables most go stores and supermarkets still. People live all over Ja. Not just 1 area. So what is closer and convenient for you may not be for a other person. Again, some prices are same and even cost more in wholesale and market.
If you want to see a Jamaican supermarket in the UK here's the link;

Consider buying from these shops once in a while because it equates to more jobs for the people.
Thanks for sharing. Yes people there told me they shop locally with small vendors for better quality products and cheaper prices 👍
Am not rich and I show at supermarkets.I don't know why every Jamaicans should live under stereotypes and perceptions.
I shop at Shoppers Fair which is also owned by the Progressive Group. Those supermarkets are very very reasonable. I used to think they were expensive but the first time I went to shop there I was surprised at the prices.
I agree with you, this was a pointless video.
You are right about this
In terms of prices, Progressive Foods is akin to shopping at Waitrose in London! I'm UK born of Jamaican parents, and whenever I visit Montego Bay I love browsing the aisles at Progressive Foods, but rarely do a full weekly shop there.
Yes, I can imagine. It looks like an expat touristy supermarket. Big $ for so many things
Great to see Walkerswood on the shelves there. I love their jerk marinade, the best I've had.
I'll have to give it a try 👍
Vegetables are super high, way cheaper in Canada 🇨🇦. Even the things we get from Jamaica. I believe you can purchase the vegetables in the outdoor markets for cheaper.
Yes, people told me they shop for cheaper and even better locally
Oh that's great. They carry other island brands of foods in jamaica.
Yes, big importers
Jamaica does more imports than exports which is a shame
We love Jamaica 🇯🇲😍🙌❤

Thanks 😊
Next time, try the Bahola's original Indian curry or Chief hot & spicy duck/goat curry. They have less tumeric and more flavour.
Yeah totally agree Steve I thought it would be a lot cheaper. Perhaps the market would be better. Great video Steve.
Totally agree Neil
I often say we buy at US rates but even at 3rd world rate in many instances. Most everything is imported and if local, costly.
A jamaican hot foods counter?
That's a dream to me.
Harddoe bread is super yummy. But I like the whole wheat version.
Thats a great selection of drinks and food.
Do they have Heinz baked beans?
No, their beans looked kinda wierd, dark and shiny sauce
I live in Jamaica yes they have Bush baked beans.
Wow definitely more cosmopolitan than where I live 🙄
Most of my Asian stuff comes via India, through Germany.
So lucky really. Very interesting Stevo 👍
Now that's spice heaven
I brought back a few. Subscribe for some yard food coming soon 😋

Not that much cheaper. Also depends on the item.
I shop at Loshusan, Megamart mostly. It's expensive even at some wholesales.
If the video was taken after Hurricane Beryl then this might explain the higher prices for fruits, vegetables and ground provisions. But in general buying certain foods at the supermarket isn’t cheap
Yes, I heard that 👍

Yes, I was told bot to go there without a few people wi me
Most Jamaicans buy their seafood directly from the fishermen. Rarely would we buy fish in a supermarket, except for the returnees.
I don't know any seafood person to buy directly from. Where are they in Kingston?
@@raab5040 Rae town, it's on Kingston Habour/downtown. There's a fisherman's beach down there. I live in Ochi.

Yrs, I love a good local market. I wanted to go to Coronation Market but didn't have time.

The supermarket is for the people who work double shift who don't get the time to go to the regular market to buy their produce
That looks like for tourists
make American salary while living in Jamaica is the goal
AMURULA rum cream is soft mot even strong enough compare to jamaica rum cream

Yes, pretty expensive. I know fortunately the majority of the good people of Jamaica go elsewhere for much better deals
