    Hi there, I am from Australia and we do cut some tough redgum over here. I have been cutting my own firewood for a number of years now and recently purchased an MS461 Magnum saw, this saw is by far the best saw that I have owned, running a 30" Bar with a Full Chisel chain Regular and Skip Tooth it is a pleasure to use, super powerful and not too heavy, I look forward to the day out. A+++

    The 461 (and 880) only saw in Stihl's pro line with standard carb. I've been following on a chainsaw forum and so far no info on 461 or 462 that would be M-Tronic. I have 2 M-Tronics, MS 363cm and MS 661c. Both are awesome! I don't know anyone that doesn't love their ms 461.
    Thanks Dony for reviewing a big saw.

    I have one too, I absolutely love it....with the 25" bar this saw is a beast....I only cut locust, oak, Osage, walnut, and ash.....
    Also this saw gains power up to 15-20 tanks of fuel....as it starts breaking in your smile will get bigger and bigger!!!!

      I agree. 15-20 tanks for get this saw working optimally. I've cut two summers with it and it has gotten stronger and stronger. I'm probably at full strength now.

    The 461 looks like a great saw. I’ve never run one, I have a 372 Husky and a 2172 Jonsered in the 70cc saw size. I do have a ms362 and like it very much. The Husky saws are just easier for maintenance, at least the old ones are.

    Great pro saw but try carrying it around for a few hours and see how your arms feel. For the average weekend warrior (firewood gatherer) a 50cc to 60cc saw with a 18 inch to 20 inch bar is adequate.

I do adust tuning with temperature changes ie summer winter. The M-Tronic adjusts auto. They also learn as you cut more. By comparison, I had standard carb MS 362 before getting the M-Tronic. Ed

    Great videos! I've got a question I was going to purchase the MS 461 but now in the USA the MS 441 is released so now I'm in a dilemma which one do I get. I'm leaning towards the MS 441. What's your recommendation

    • @gunnarschutz7675
      @gunnarschutz7675 7 лет назад +2

      Gary Swinson 461 because power to weight ratio. 441 is 14.6lbs 70.7cc
      461 is 14.6lbs 76.5cc
      price in the two are usually close.

    • @jtdiffen
      @jtdiffen 6 лет назад +4

      The 441 and 461 weigh the same. But the 461 has more power and more torque. Plus it's got an adjustable carb. You tune it the way you want.
      I went through the same dilemma and choose the 461. Glad I did. It's a beast! Right out of the box. Other folks say it just gets better with use/break-in.

  • @AATreeService
    @AATreeService 7 лет назад +11

    Please everyone DO NOT EVER add extra oil to your fuel for break in. That will damage the engine bearings. More oil causes the engine and crankcase to run hot. Fuel (gasoline) is what cools the engine and crankcase down. Oil is made to lube the bearings and 50:1 is PLENTY of oil for that. Secondly on break in don't start your saw and hammer down on it for 3 seconds like that. That's gonna scratch the cylinder walls real quick. Spin the engine up for a fraction of a second numerous times until it has been warmed up properly. That takes about 30-50 seconds depending on outside temperature. Luckily for people like him Stihl does one break in run at the factory to help people that do this from completely damaging the engine forever.

    • @hhoward14
      @hhoward14 6 лет назад

      What Alex Armga says is right, because that engine runs on a "fuel-oil mixture" that is optimized for a ratio of 50-1.
      If you choose to increase the amount of oil in the ratio, then the carburetor should be adjusted to reflect that change. If we don't do that, then the engine will run slightly weak under load, have a slightly retarded "flame rate", and have hotter exhaust gasses, slightly less power (because the volume of fuel is reduced by the extra volume of oil), and the cylinder will be hotter...
      Best regards.

    • @ChrisSmoove77
      @ChrisSmoove77 6 лет назад +2

      Alex Armga it won’t scratch anything. Oil is in the fuel. It’s being lubricated before it even sparks. 40:1 and tune it properly

    The last of the non mtronic big stihl saws, in Western countries anyway.
    Still it is a strato saw and horribly choked down due darn EU/EPA regs when stock.
    Put a buckshot or bark box muffler on it and a maxflow and then you have a great saw.
    But you must remove the limiters from the carb to tune it or it will be way too lean.
    Mine (in Oz) had limiters that only allowed 3/4 of a turn on both h & l.
    With the mods the h had to come out another 3/4 turn before it would 4 stroke out of the wood.
    That indicates how heavily choked down they are stock

      So let me make sure that I'm reading this correctly, StihlLearning ... You're saying that the MS461 is filling the role of the 046, the 460 and the 044 quite nicely, correct? In fact, it seems like you're saying that the MS461 is better than all of the saws I just listed, right? If so, have you been running the M-Tronic model or the one that DonyBoy is featuring in this video?

    Geat vid. Stay away from Stihl 261. My Stihl 261 broke down in crancshaft after only 3 years of cutting firewood. Stihl said it was my fault because I didnt use the Stihl oil and alcylat gasoline! 026 was a much more robust saw and I had one for allmost 20 years and used shell oil and 95 gas mixed 2%. Not happy with the Stihl 261 and Stihl support.Warranty dont count if you dont use Stihls own oil or alcylatgas

      I bought a 026 in 1989 I think ' used it for 10 years or more never a problem, bought another 026 and used it till 2016 then bought a ms261 Runs great'only problem was coil fried ' replaced it and still running strong. I've had 2 =026's a 038 super' a 193 a 201 a couple I forget' a 390 and a 362. and I mean never a problem except for coil in 261....So might have to get the ms461 while they have 15% off this month //

      I've ran an 044 for the last 25 years, and just came across a 461 with about 6 tanks of fuel through it for $675. I couldn't say no, so I bought it and don't regret it a bit. Significantly better on fuel, smoother running, more power, you would be very happy with this saw if you bought it, even though the 044 is good.

    too big a saw for the avarage consumer. This is a pro-saw for those in the business. Personally I have a MS362 with M-tronic and so far it has functioned perfectly. Fuel consumption is quite high but it has lots of power. Easy to start the motor.

      pwleppa I just cut firewood with it never logged a professionally I love my 461 rips. I had a 361 would like another one but I would rather not bend over cutting logs for very long and this saw eats through in a hurry. obviously I keep my chains sharp happy cutting

      A 461 is a good 2 saw plan. I cut 10+ cords for my heating needs and my MS290 does much of the work. But when a giant (>30") dead standing fir or tamarack presents itself, the 461 is pleasure to have and use.

      Gogle Plus Sucks It adjusts the carburetor automatically, for example if your cutting at sea level and then on a mountain slope, it will compensate for the difference in air density.

    IMPORTANT RECALL. I just read that most Stihl MS 461s are recalled for possible fuel line leaks . Consumer Products Safety Commission bulletin 17-095 issued 2/23/17. Serial numbers 173092880 to 181993952. Also see stihlrecall@stihl.us. A bit confusing because same recall a couple years ago.

    I have a Stihl chain saw and never got the service out of it that I got from my old Poulan saw. With the Poulan, I have done the bulk of my work with it and after seeing what it did, I was not interested in anything else, but bought the Stihl since it was said to be a great saw. I have been very disappointed with the newer Stihl and won't buy another one.
