  • It was time to do some good basic maintenance like blowing out the air filter and cleaning behind the bar cover. Hope this helps some people with some very basic routine cleaning for their chainsaws!

Thank you. Finally a chain saw video with some real cleaning being done. I just "restored" a burnt up MS461 with top exterior looking like new when done. The clutch well had been nuked by someone running for an extended period with the chain brake on. Nothing would touch the burnt on cr-- in the clutch well. No solvent, brake cleaner, agressive cleaner ... except that Easy Off oven cleaner cleaned it easily, as it does on burn on stove stains. Just plugged the oiler holes (it was off) and after brushing the cleaner around a bit, blasted it with garden hose. Air blast, then good coat of wd40 then another air blast. Not white any more but looks damned good. Runs like a champ. New, Chinese oiler not quite working so cleaned that system then discovered a missing gasket on the pump output path.

I love the 461! I'll remember that about the different cleaners you used!

Lol, you can't run a chainsaw with the chain brake on. That's the point of the chain brake. The saw doesn't spin when it's engaged. Just sounds like no one ever cleaned it any further than taking the bar cover off.

Remember to remove the left cover, a lot of dirt accumulates inside

Can you do this same video with the 194t?

Good video. My fire department uses this saw on our trucks. We have one that won't idle when it's started up. I went through all the basic fixes I could think of. We tried adjusting the low idle set crew, cleaned the spark plug and the spark arrestor, checked the fuel filter and fuel line. My next guess would be to clean out the carburetor. Any advice on something I may have missed would be appreciated.

The first question i always ask any with a stihl saw is what gas they are running. I will only run 100% pure gas and obviously oil....but make sure your not using fuel with any kind of additive aka ethanol....it will mess up your fuel lines and such. Its hard to find in some areas.

@@HermanWoodworks We're using ethanol free TruFuel 50:1 mix. I don't think the fuel is bad. We go through it fairly fast so it doesn't have a chance to just sit around for too long.

Sorry I was busy busy today...I should have started off my first reply with thank you for your public service! As for the saw, carburetors are definitely where my knowledge weakens....I know my mechanic friend recommends sea foam for minor carb performance issues rather than stripping it apart to clean everything out and rebuild it. Possibly run some sea foam in the fuel and see if that breaks up whatever gunk may be hindering the idle issue.

If you run into a problem like this, the best thing to do is refer to your owners manual and reset your carb back to factory adjustments. Then go from there adjusting your low and idle screws. If you get it going good one day and the next time you find you need to adjust again and again. Most likely have a leak somewhere. At that point, take it to someone that knows what they are doing

How do you change the plug with the compression button

Use the smaller side of your scrench. Should fit your compression button if it needs swapping
