My grandpa gave me his 461 to clear my property for my house. Saw doesn't run just yet but he said if I get it going I can keep it. The guy taught me how to climb and how to fell when I worked for him, but we never really got to maintenence 😂 hopefully this video sets me straight
Podcast(s)???? HELL YEAH!!! Man I put Kensie's (bayou country powersaws) onto my phone so I can ensure I don't miss anything, listen to them at least 2-3X (while working) would LOVE seeing someone in the powersaw tuning community do a dedicated podcast (kensie's are more "spur of the moment", general podcasts), like one on porting or one on holistic-engine-approach (IE how porting is only part of the equation, how a certain level of porting is "too far" IF you do not begin to alter/upgrade other components IE carb etc) Would be awesome, I vote a BIG +1!!!!
One note for carb adjustments, If the screws or screw is before the carb (inlet) its the fuel your adjusting, if they are after the carb (outlet) like most saws, trimmers, and etc, Your adjusting how much air it gets and this works for four wheelers (which typically have one screw on the outlet that adjusts air) dirtbikes and even car carbs are all like this. Its just a helpful tip that can help you understand what your machine is or isnt getting enough of💙

Oh I'm sure they do and I'm sure I will hear about it... But honestly if they don't have some sort of credentials or evidence to back it up it just goes in the long list of shit I don't care about 🙄😂
Great video. I've watched many carb adjustment videos on RUclips and they all seem to touch upon what you said, that they all make it look easy. You're in depth explanation answered all my questions. You mentioned upper and lower limit RPM's, just curious as to why don't you use a tachometer to dial in the factory settings?

Nice job explaining John. Very difficult to keep it simple while not going into the finer details. Most can't hear the blubbering sound of the saw leaning out at idle, which makes it harder to teach.
Awesome man... I don't really know what a podcast is but I would love to talk to different people and have them share their stories and experience... I think it would be awesome to squash all the drama to have these saw builders myself included to talk the shit out instead of hating just because they are competition... Thanks for the clarification on the carb. A lot of bad info out there. A podcast would be cool. Just pick a topic and ramble away!!! I’ll listen on my long driver to work. I’m running out of Percision rifle and golf podcasts.
Hey John, thanks for another great video. I follow you on IG but I don't spend much time on there. But I have been bingeing your videos since I found them. Maybe sometime in the future I may see if I can get a saw done bye you, when you have time and I have funds. Lol Honestly the way you explain things makes perfect sense. Really appreciate the insight from a pro!! Keep it up man, thanks!

But I’m running a standard 462 and they have metal inserts where the carb adjustment is. I can’t find out anything on how to get past the adjustment limiters
John, where can people buy one of your saws (not intended for any kind of wood cutting)? Do you have a storefront or is it hidden somewhere in your insta?
You definitely can... I set it to 13600 at WOT 13400 if you run 50:1... then make any fine adjustments if needed... I like to tune by ear and verify with a tach... just how I do it
Any suggestions for someone in mn to build me a saw I know I asked you before and you said you aren’t taking on new customers anyone else good you recommend locally?

Can you still be lean on the H even if you tune it to the recomended RPM? I have a 395xp with a muffler mod and i tuned the H to 12000 which is 500 below the max stated but it doesnt 4 stroke at the top or when i pull it out of the cut. thanks
Yes absolutely... So one thing is if you do a muffler mod you usually have to add some fuel... I do it on the low setting... but just because you are at the factory settings does not necessarily mean the saw is tuned correctly... There is a lot to it to be honest this video is very basic
How much for me to send you my ms461 and beef it up?? It's a 2017 saw I bought it in 2020 because it was 15% off brand new, I doubt I have 8 tanks of fuel through it.
John have you had any issues with the carb needles walking out after removing the carb limiters? I was talking with a guy who said Stihl puts them in there because they don't run a needle springs anymore to keep them in place, and part of the reason for the limiters being there is to keep the needles from moving. I've never had an issue with the saws I've worked on, just seeing what your take is on that .
I needed a whole week to realize what hapening with my carb because every time I adjust carb it couldn't work then I removed plastic and saw it that screw is moving while my saw is working I'm thinking to put a bigger screw
No the 441 has a 1 piece muffler... I swapped my 441 muffler for a 044 muffler but I had to modify it quite a bit... thats how I have a barkbox on my 441
Please do the podcast! There's a lack of this type of thing in that format. Also, on the 372XP you just did, was that an x-torq? If so, did you remove the strato dividers? I did that on mine and it caused my high jet to be more than 1.5 turns out, but it seems to make sense, since you're nearly doubling the portion of air that requires fuel.
NEWBIE-NOTE / PRO-TIP: The tips of these H & L jet-needles are often VERY tiny sharp tips (that are blocking-off the H or L jet), anyways DO NOT put significant pressure on the screws when bottoming-out (putting them to fully closed, full CW turned-off fully closed), if you continue CW turning - which it WILL let you - you will bend the needle tip at end of adjustment-screw and future adjustments will be VERY wonky!!
Unless you remove the limit caps you can't over-tightem them... if you want to makw your own videos on how to do this stuff please go ahead... I don't want these "I know better so here is the right way..." comments... @@johnscustomsawsto be honest, I think he was just adding to the video by bringing up a point you didn't cover.
