I've had a chainsaw without a carburetor for years. I really should rebuild the carb and put it back on.

You made me laugh. Thanks Hough
I have a leaf blower without a Carb as well, its works fine, as long as i plug it in.
DIRT and dust will destroy this machine.
Lol, the first time i read it i didnt get it, then i read it again and started laughing.
Nice, no spluttering, no tough idle, no hesitation. Pure power.
I used to work at a Stihl dealer a few years ago. I remember the Stihl rep talking about this new fuel injected saw that they were working on. Nice to see it turned out well.

I have a MS460. I just choke it. Pull 1-2 times most times, at most 3 times and it starts. Great saw! I have had it for awhile and I'm pretty darn sure its just as strong as brand new. I never use the decompression button either. My go to saw is a MS261 its light and runs a 20 inch bar really well. I cut Ash and Oak mostly.
Great combo with the saw and iron horse. Power and minimal footprint stacking saw logs. Nice to see you guys working wood. Good luck with good weather, great pastures and gardens this year.
Always a great day when I can watch a Swedish Homestead saw review! (Several times!)
All you kids and your technology, I still have my 2 man saw and it works great!
It's always good to see Tim and his mad skills again. Thanks Simeon. I'll never need a saw like that one, but it's interesting to see where the industry is headed.
This was very interesting. And I had not heard of this saw before. I will send this to my brother. It may serve his needs.
Thanks,

"Ach du lieber, mein schatz"! When I used to live up in the Northwest Wisconsin backwoods, near Madge (Spooner too). My great loves were my Pioneer P25 (3.1 cu.in. ) & P50 (5.0 cu.in.) chainsaws. The P25 did most all of my cutting. But my P50, "the screamer", was used for the "big schtoof", especially red & white oaks (hard as granite!). I was in my mid 30s in those mid & later 1970s (I'm now 79). How I greatly miss those most wonderful years as a bachelor & strong as "a bull" (stinky as one too!)!!! Owned 120 acres all to myself & my nearest & only neighbor was a mile away! Got down to -60°s one winter! Always carried a Ruger Super Blackhawk in .44 magnum with me in the woods. I've had a very blessed life!!! I try to thank God for it all, in Christ Jesus!!!!! "Gesundheit" & put annudder birch log on the fire for me poleaze! Miss those most wunnerful smells of a wood fire! But the Lord has blessed me well for this rest of my life too, now living in the "civilized" far north central Illinois.

One thing I wanna share to all about Stihl Chain Saw, bought it in 1989 and until now still working in good condition. Amazing Stihl!
I am passing your videos on the new saws on to a Shihl dealer. He said he can't wait to see them.
Small outbound engines have been fuel injected for years now with great results. It was only time before the sub 100cc engines went this route.
Used one of these at college yesterday (I’m studying to become an arborist) it was a lot of fun
Look at how it goes into a plunge cut, that's impressive, I got to say the last 10 or so years all the saws I really haven't been impressed with, my old 90s Husqvarna can out cut them any day but this saw actually looks good enough it may be worth trying out. Excellent vid looking forward to trying one for myself
I'll have to say that time brings changes and this is just a natural progression. Fuel injection is the future for numerous reasons and yes it is extremely reliable in today's engines. I'm sure it will be just as reliable in smaller engines as it is developed. As my dad use to say, "boys the days they are a changing!" A truer statement has never been made!
Except now with good rechargable battries, especially in urban use, no exhaust, quieter and powerful electric saws do a better job. Charging off a small generator or a vehicle. Maintince on the motor, virtually nil,
@@51WCDodge I agree with you about the advancements in battery technology. It still has a ways to go to fit into pro/semi pro cutting but the push continues. For a homeowner with relatively limited work they are a real option. We still have a ways to go for extended cutting. Charging batteries with a generator is extremely inefficient.
@@samtuck6400 The tecnology is improving but how far it can go is the question. I'd agree the major concerns at the moment are cost of battries and charge/running time.Though one other concern is the lack of interchangabilty in batteries, you are tied to one manufactruer. .My favourite tool is a donkey years old Hydraulic saw that pluga into the hydrulic pto of a tractor. The down side is you hoses atached the up side is it just keeps going, including under water.
I messaged Stihl on Facebook. They said... Hello David, Thank you for your question. STIHL currently does not have an approximate release date available for the STIHL MS 500i in the US, but are hoping for late summer or early fall. When this kind of product becomes available, your local authorized STIHL dealers will be notified. Thank you for your interest in STIHL products and have a great day.

@@phi376 My local dealer had no idea what I was talking about. He thought I was talking about the concrete saw.
My local dealer as well had no idea of this what so ever seems like stihl needs to educate the dealers on the product
@@itfmakaveli7769 I was going to buy a new 462, but with my lousy dealer i went with the husky 572xp. Also stihl labor rate is $100 hour, my husky dealer is $60 per hour. We have a Stihl cordless chainsaw - the battery is interchangeable with other Stihl machinery that we have which is really helpful - not such large scale as yourselves, but we like Stihl because the products are very reliable. Thank you for showing the saw in action - it is a very interesting video.
Good review Simeon, good to see Tim in the videos again. Things are looking good over there, kids are growing up. Thanks for sharing.
I’ll buy one eventually. I’ve used their cutoff saws with this technology and they’re no joke. I’ve never owned a bad Stihl product yet.
Give me a break ALL you brand fan boys are a joke I've been running saws for over 20 yrs and they ALL break down if your running them consistently and are working them hard lol ALL SAWS BREAK DOWN and in my experience I've had more trouble with STIHLS and there almost always more expensive to repair.
There's a few out there...

Yup I got my old 380 and a 661 that are in the bracket of the 500 ...but that little skidder would come in handy where I am
From what I'm told vertical chain saw cutting is really hard and homie makes it look effortless, very skilled.
Is it? Don't know, been doing it from the beginning 🤔 You need a properly sharp chain if you don't want to struggle.
Great video and enjoyed your demo of the Stihl saw. Always very professionally done!
This is great and all but these new high end electric saws are getting pretty good and my 1976 carb stihl is still running great
Just uncovered -75 or something Jonsered Raket RS52E. Bloody thing was unused roughly 30-40 years, jammed, but after oiling and moving things back and forth it started to loose up and even had spark from the get go. Recon i can get it running tomorrow, if i can find some gas hose and carbs membranes are not dead. It sure weights a ton, but seems to be reliable just like Stihl 029 that run on 3rd pull with old gas after sitting 5 years. I would like to see MS500i after sitting even a year unused. Probably cant even repair it due the damn fancy electronics failing after while.
New chainsaws have crap carbs on them and you are not legally allowed to adjust them after the completely break in after a year or so. Your old saw is a rare gem to have. Those of us who don't have an old one like you, need a fix for these new carbs saws.
@@williammitchell8247 I've been told. Got it from my dad he ran it over with a skid steer and still runs great he bought a replacement but it's nothing but problems
@@Hellsong89 we also had a Jonsered 52 E in the past. It's a really heavy machine with 3 HP. Unfortunately a couple of things were broken, so we retired it. Now we use a Stihl 026, this is also a good saw, it's more powerful, but still lighter.
I am with you EC. My absolute favorite is MS260 PRO. Twas last one made before carb modifications and it's still a wood eater ,especially with a 20" raptor bar. New saws are a OK but nothing's wrong with the ones still kicking off the showroom floor still.

Buy a Stihl MS500i with fuckd ecu . Fits Holley EFi ...
Personally, I LOVE this.. Fuel injection is not only more efficient meaning you'll get more run time from one tank but its also more powerful. I don't know if I'll buy this one, I never buy the initial product just so they can fix the bugs but I WILL be buying one in the next year or two.
a properly set up carb will do exactly the same as fuel injection..... you still want the same air-fuel mix
sure.... it takes a LOT more work and skill to set up a carb correctly....... while most EFI systems auto adjust in seconds
might make starting it quicker, however
thats really the whole point.... less maintenance....
and jim bob cant fuck with the carb ..... then leave a 1 star review because it runs like shit

but then again...... my old 77 chevy pickup with a 400 cubic inch v8, full time 4 wheel drive, and a mechanical secondary Q-jet 4 barrel carb

ANYWAY.....
it will start in -50f, with no block heater..... when my 97 to 06 GM cars....even with block heaters plugged in, wont start (only 1/4 of kids showed up to school that day)
pull the choke... pump it twice, and turn it over
VA! ROOM! fires right up
but ive got all smog deleted (montana has ZERO emissions laws)..... and rebuilt the carb my self
spent DAYS dialing it in
but god damn does it run good...... only has ~35,000 miles on it, due to the fuel economy (which is mostly the full time 4 wheel drive....and aerodynamics like a brick)

Not so much an hour on the back of a tailgate. But I get you I'm a small engine mechanic and 20 years and don't think that it will be alive and have fun getting parts if you want
How many cars on the road right now have carbs in them? I don't see a bunch of them broke down beside the road.
Glock2201 Yeah, we're not talking cars here. You want one of these, fine, go buy one, couldn't care less. That was the point of my comment.
@@blkdog229 No, you're not talking cars, but the concept is very much the same. It may be new for saws, but the tech itself is _not_ new, by any stretch of the imagination. In fact, it's 3-4 decades (or more) old. You are just willfully ignorant.

I really enjoy my husquarvarna 390xp its such a damn beast, I bought it new for 1250.00 bucks great investment paid for itself for sure . I also have a small stihl climbing saw that does most of my small to medium cutting . I have a old homelite with the steel body that saw is really good too.
Fuel injection and still gotta pump 8 times . I was expecting a remote start so I could start it , and let it warm up from my kitchen while I have a cup of coffee.

Until a year ago i only had a ms361 that i ran with a short bar, or a long bar, depending on the task. After i got a ms201 i never seem to use the 361 anymore, just some chainsaw milling with a 28" bar. The smaller and lighter saw works fine in 90% of my work. Leading me to beleive i won't need this, but cool stuff is cool, and i i'd like this one.
Very cool, I have rebuild all my older pro saws to avoid the electronic carbureted modules and in a few more years I will go to the pure efi model s that will be out and revised several times by than.

But what is the self-propelled grapple in the back ground at 5:21 Who makes it and where can we get one.
Stihl is just the best there is . I have a MS310 and a MS025 we have mod the muffler on both . The quick throttle is the key rev fast plenty of power to cut . I make aluminum skid plates for mine to tie all the peace’s together . You just have to love the way they cut and saw . Yeah exhaust levels you know they have to hate competing . Because there’s a lot of mods done to get way more power to win ! I like the MS310 it’s a great powerful and does weigh a good little bit but not real bad! Great video !
I was wondering when EFI would replace carbs on small engines. I guess it's now! Thanks for the video.
I always enjoy seeing the expertise of your brother's saw work. Today's video prompted a couple questions. I would love to hear your brother explain his techniques of cross-cutting his felled tree. I noticed that he makes a cut around the circumference with the tip of his saw before finishing the center part of the crosscut. I'm assuming it has to do with avoiding getting his saw pinched. The other technique I noticed today was the two small flat cuts on either side of his hinge wood. I would enjoy hearing from him both how this helps him and how I should do it correctly myself. Thanks!
I'm no expert, far from it but I suspect Tim does those flat cuts by the hinge to clear the bark, and is then better sighted to keep his bore cut straight and true to line for the hinge.
The two small cuts on either side of the hinge help to prevent fiber pull. If you've ever seen a stump with "horns" of wood sticking up from one or both ends of the hinge, that's fiber pull: you've pulled some of the wood out of the butt of the log. Not a big deal if you are cutting firewood, but it can ruin the end of a saw log: the log's grade may be reduced due to the defect: fewer or shorter good boards can be sawed out of it since those chunks are missing. If you are cutting a veneer-grade log (which can be big Dollar/ big Krona selling price), significant fiber pull can cause it to be downgraded to a saw log. The likelihood of this happening varies with the species of wood. The chance also increases significantly if your felling cuts are down near the root flare of the stump. (As a side benefit, as @Julian Easton noted, it does make it easier to see what hinge dimensions you are setting up.)
They answered the questions well.

That's all we need, something else we can't repair...
@power equipment a carburetor is a lot easier to fix or replace than a fuel injection system
@paulsan2112 They do the FI so that only their dealerships will be able to service them, at least for a while...
....and no Chinese knock offs for a few years...
Or something else we don't have to re-tune every month of the years because THREE DEGREES MORE BOY NOW THE A/F RATIO IS GARBAGE DO THAT AGAIN FROM SCRATCH. And has more power and less heavy. Not all change is bad change.

Not to criticize, but the STIHL MS500i is the first chainsaw with ELECTRIC injection. Not at all the first saw in the world with injection. Actually there are several older chainsaws that had a type of injection. For example the Norwegian "Bamse", from the 50ˋs, which had a mechanical injection driven by a valve on the crankshaft. Nice video by the way! :D
Håkon Andrè Landsverk sach dolmar has a fuel injected carb so your right lots of fuel injected chainsaws of one kind or another 😀
Every combustion engine has fuel injection, so you're just arguing semantics and/or technicalities.
Naru 'Sanav some engines are carburated so not all engines have fuel injection 🤪
My carbureted saws aren't fuel injected. Air passing through a constriction by the jet port creates a venturi vacuum and sucks fuel into the intake. So try again.

Dude. All of my injuries are from attempting just that. Lol and I so love knowing this. If you find anything on RUclips link it here. 🤜 hell yeah!
@@ScoopDaddy488 link?
They have had fuel injected for CR500 for quite some time men dash lady not quite sure your background pictures misleading
The MS 500i is an Animal. Great review
Great Stihl advertisement . . . wicket power in that hardwood.
Next model will be electric start, and have an app to run it from your phone, won't even have to get off the couch LOL.
Awesome technology but I like the simplicity of my carbed STHIL’s because the less electrics and more mechanical shit the easier it is for me to work on.
AMEN.
and year later, go ask someone who has used to saw in professional use, how much issues they have had....
In MotoGP/GP500 there were injectors on 2 strokes 20+ years ago. What did took so long to apply them on chainsaws. I hope it gets common in the near future.
Cuts pretty fast there. 20" bar is generally pretty small for that size though. My 362 works well into 25" bars, but doesn't cut that fast no matter what I do. Stihl is great either way.
Small engine fuel injection systems seem to be very problematic and surely with equipment being used in demanding environments such as a chainsaw the simpler the better. I dont doubt the electronics will be the first to fail.
Plenty of pro lawn mowers with 30+ hp v twins with 2,000 hours on them without any efi issues.
cptbuilt K Agreed
Wow maybe a stihl will actually start when you want it to now
Seen a cng/propane powered weedeater for sale on 5miles the other day, interesting little thing, had a little propane tank where a gas tank would be located.
That saw does not fuck around , great video
If this is the future of chainsaws then I’m very glad to be stuck in the past with my non auto tune manual carb Echo saws at least if something goes wrong with them I’m not restricted to paying over the top dealership service charges and for the most part I can fix them myself. All too easy to bang on about how eco friendly and clean running these new generation saws are but if you have to loose a days cutting and drive your truck to the nearest dealership every time it messes around you very quickly loose any eco benefit and your down time increases so you make less money. As a business I can’t see why anyone would think these saws are a good idea
The 500i motor has been around since 2012 in concrete saws and they are proven reliable. I have a family member who runs them commercially (10 saws used most days) and completely got rid of his carby models as they are unreliable comparably. Don't diss it to you try it.
Not that negative about it. Its great technolgy made to last!
