This song has been interpreted several different ways, including what you are saying: as if the guy is obsessed and thinks he absolutely must be with that person, and that she must feel the same way too... that she just doesn’t realize it. There is another video to this- in black-and-white-that you should watch, even if on your own time, you definitely get that vibe in that video.
Depeche Mode is HUGE, and with their music catalog you could fall down a deep rabbit hole. They are still going today all around age 60 and their first single came out in the very early 80s. Most of their songs are written by guitarist Martin Gore, Who occasionally takes over lead vocals, btw, but his tenor harmonizing with Dave’s deep voice sounds so wonderful. And live: it’s not just a concert, it’s more like a religious experience, especially since they have such a huge, dedicated following all over the world. In fact, they are the only performers to fill the Rose Bowl four consecutive nights in a row! I highly recommend you watch their live performances of Enjoy The Silence from Berlin, (don’t recall the year, but it’s in the 2000s) and Never Let Me Down Again live from Paris, ‘01.
It’s a miracle singer Dave Gahan is even still alive- 1993-94 just almost got him, he was in such a deep heroin addiction. He overdosed in Los Angeles (where he was living) so many times the paramedics nicknamed him “the cat.” (he certainly lost several of his nine lives through those years!). He also slit his wrists in a suicide attempt that he admits was a cry for help. Martin too-he was a functioning alcoholic for 20+ years.
Fortunately, both members (and bandmate Andy Fletcher) are sober and healthy today and still putting out great music. Great thing about the live performances I recommended (and there are plenty others): they are older and sober-and better than ever! Dave is considered one of the best rock frontmen ever, so you really can’t miss watching a live performance. ❤️

This is one of my favorite Depeche Mode videos because it’s so funny. Dave could really be an actor because he played the part of a has-been singer who still thinks he all that. You really believe that he is this singer who is so full of himself and it makes me laugh every time. An interesting note is the guy in the blue suit who introduced them is the director of many of their videos, Anton Corbijn.

finally --- someone who gets the video!!! gahan is playing a 70s lothario dude who thinks he still has it and is irresistable to women. this goes with the lyrics. Don't say you want me
      Don't say you need me
      Don't say you love me
      It's understood.
well it is NOT understood --- she ain't sayin those words cuz she dont feel that way. he deludes himself by sayings "it's understood"

@@africareactshame one of the band members died. But the world tour was in memory of him too. Yes I come from the same county of Essex in England where the lads started out many years ago. Used to see them in the local clubs playing to an audience of about 100 or so people. Now huge all round the world.

Pretty interesting song, Fay! And excellent reaction! By the way, the thing on the floor is a polar bear skin rug. Bear skin rugs used to be the rage years ago and, I think, polar bear skin rugs were considered particularly prestigious because they were harder to get. Anyway, here's to your next reaction! 🙏🙂💜

I don't know the song too well, but it seems to me its about the human ego primarily, good song though and I loved your reaction thanks!

The album „Ultra“ has a „death“ theme running through it. Despite the funny video (which is all about being „no good“), I always took the lyrics of the song as a very dark metaphor for eternal love. Somebody who’s probably dead („I have all the time in the world, it is written in the stars above“…) talking to a lost love that is still alive („Don‘t say your happy out there without me“), waiting to be re-united after death („A god‘s decree you‘ll be right here by my side, right next to me, you can run, but you cannot hide“).

Obviously this band is one of the biggest electronic bands in the world who sell out 20,000+ seater arenas, so this video is some sort of piss take of cabaret acts (i guess).

Love your puzzled look ...they are making fun of themselves ...its a spoof ...and the song is from a narcissist's point of view ...an ego maniac ...lol
