  • I decided not to get Trixie's cab sand blasted, or any other kind of blasting. This Holden HZ one tonner is in fantastic shape with such little rust, so I'm going to manually restore the cab myself. This is part 1 of that venture, getting it all the rust stripped out and ready for KBS (in part 2).

Good stuff taking it on yourself. I know that view well laying in the footwell and grinding / sanding the underside of the dash!! Be glad you didn't have the horrible 70's "insulation" behind the heater box that gets all kinds of nasty. Brings back some good memories :)

Thanks Hannah... what were you restoring? Do you still have it?

Buy yourself a right angled disc sander with roloc attachment. Then buy 2 inch scotch brite discs. You'll never look back! Keep up the good work 🎉

Thanks for the tip, there is so much I keep learning from viewers like you! I don't have power in the HZ shed (apart from a small generator that barely ran my drill) so whatever I use has to be battery at this stage... I don't know the full range of disc sanders you can get, but it would need to be smaller than my grinder (125mm).

@staceonwheels you can buy battery ones. They are quite expensive though, but will get into all those fiddly areas. I find it quite therapeutic actually

I'll go looking for one... and yes I understand that therapeutic effect... relaxed focus like in meditation.

If that pass side floor was put in better, You could say that's a near perfect cab, I was the same with the blasting, plus the cost and I could control the time frame stripping myself, I also used the KBS system on the internal cab and found it great, also used rust blast on the body and parts, watch it in the heat though. 2 years on since paint and there have been no surprises coming through the paint, I cavity waxed the whole ute and chassis too.. You are doing a fine job there anyway, enjoy.. Lee

Lee, thanks for the confirmation! What do you mean by cavity wax? I was planning to use Fishoilene in all the cavities. Thanks for sharing your experience too.

@@staceonwheels cavity wax is like thinned wax in a can, I've used fish oil before and wanted to try something else, the cavity wax has a long tube and a nozzle that shoots the liquid 360 degrees, it worked for me, but I've had no issues with fish oil either..

It's a shame you couldn't have gotten it acid dipped. I had my stato chassis done and it removes rust and cleaned where you can't get any hands or tools.
Sadly expensive but works great, food for thought on the chassis ?
It brings it back to the metal it was In the factory.

You're right... it sounds like the right way to go. But I really wanted this project to be me doing the work. It won't be perfect but I'll know every inch of this one tonner by the end! Luckily the rust is miniscule jn this one, amazingly.
