Zero Valve Lash Solved! New Pushrods & Shims For My Holden 308
With standard pushrod lengths, I could not get my Holden 308 valve train geometry working as it should. Zero lash on some valves, and poor contact between the rocker rollers and valve stems. After a bit more testing and measuring, I have the solution. Here's what happened...

Fourth Track Day at Lakeside Park in Blue Group on my Ducati 848 Evo
Просмотров 2,2 тыс.Месяц назад
This is my fourth track day, and second ride on my 2013 Ducati 848 Evo, and again at Lakeside Park Raceway. It was a blast, for two reasons... Firstly, I was practicing something that made immediate improvements to my speed. Secondly, after removing the quick shifter which caused me problems last time, I really started to get to know my 848 and am in love with it!
There's Zero Valve Lash on my Holden 308 - Wrong Pushrods?
Просмотров 510Месяц назад
Before I start assembling my Holden 308, another one of the tests I'm doing is checking the valve train and rocker geometry. Lucky I did, because I've found that there is variation in the free-play or lash, from barely enough to none at all, without any preload added via the adjusters. What's the solution? I'm not sure yet...
Changing a Faulty Temperature Sensor on a Ducati SuperSport 939

Bleeding the Rear Brake Successfully on a Ducati SuperSport 939
Просмотров 1,7 тыс.5 месяцев назад
Our Ducati Supersport 939 or 950 often have a problem with rear brake fade. It's likely due to a few reasons, such as location of the rear brake line and the bleed nipple on the caliper. Pooling a few ideas together, this is what I've come up with to successfully bleed the SuperSport's rear brake. Im using first time this weekend but planning to see if I can mount and remove all 3 at once without separating the 2 10L's from the 20L. Agree they are probably the best looking luggage option for Supersports!

    • @staceonwheels
      @staceonwheels 17 дней назад

      That's certainly a factor. The valve seats were professionally machined, with new valves, so the valve stems could be sitting higher and tipping the rocker arms more over the pushrods, giving less freeplay... 🤔

    Ducati are really stubborn about fixing the shortcomings on this bike. People are put off buying this bike because of mirror vibrations and the lack of cruise control...Ducati has ignored all their pleas for years to the detriment of their sales figures.

    • @staceonwheels
      @staceonwheels 17 дней назад

      I don't know if these little issues have affected Ducati's sales figures, but I think this model is not going to stay in the line up, so they probably have no business case to spend more on it. But who knows why and how any company makes their decisions. In my experience, data and evidence play only a small part of that.

    Great video Stace! As you point out; the variability of part fit is the result of "tolerance-stack" differences across all parts in the system: from deck height, cam base circle, valve length, valve seat depth, spring seat depth, to rocker pedalstal height, and any number of other factors when non stock parts are employed. It is super-important to check the valve train geometry exactly as you have. A couple of things that may help: you can sneak up on the point of zero-lash by spinning the pushrod between your fingertips as you tighten the adjuster and you may get a better feel for that exact momentof zero lash; also, sometimes the lifter plunger can have a stronger resistance than the checking valvesprings installed -- and this may move the valve off the seat rather than preloading the lifter. A lot of people use a hydraulic lifter modified to be solid for the purpose of checking valvetrain geometry. Using some blue ink (sharpie-pen) to mark the tip of the valve prior to mock up assembly will allow you to see the sweep pattern of the rocker tip after doing a full engine rotation. Ideally you want the rocker sweep pattern to be very short (close to a straigt line of contact) and centered on the valve stem tip to avoid side-loading the valve in its guide. Pushrod length is what adjusts this sweep length and position. Love what you're doing! 😎💥💪)

      Thanks for your reactions to all this, and the extra info... I've had the heads and block decked a bit, the valve seats cleaned up, and many other little things that all obviously add up. Don't need to count the turns really, just rotate until the freeplay is gone then add the half turn. I bought the crow cam kit but noticed they were putting 186 length pushrods in (longer) so I asked them to swap for std 202 length. Especially as the heads have had some thou shaved off in their lifetime so longer pushrods would cause geometry problems and even prevent the valves from closing properly. Got the engine in and did a test fire last weekend, planning on getting the radiator support cleaned up and put in so I can give it a good run to bed the cam in. Still a long road yet. Then run some safety wire through the cable mech. to lock it in position and ensure it doesn't turn while you are riding. Second observation. When using a wrench of any type, please do everything you can to ensure you are pulling the wrench to you and not pushing it away. If the wrench slips, you will tear up fingers, knuckles, etc. Pulling is much safer; we don't want to see you get hurt.

    Stace, I haven’t seen your thoughts on how the bike fits you. Is it tall for you? How’s the reach? Does she run hot? Awesome footage. I’ve enjoyed watching the track content.

    • @staceonwheels
      @staceonwheels Месяц назад

      Thanks Kim! She is tall... I can only reach two tippie toes, or if I slide off a bit, I can get a foot down. Climbing on without the side stand down is very awkward! But it doesn't worry me much. She doesn't run hot at all... I've only seen about 70 C (maybe the sensor is dodgy?), but my SuperSport hit 115C once on the same track!

    Got to say Stace, your lines round there were great! I love Lakeside, but it can be an unforgiving place.. plus some of the unusual lines that other riders were taking in that video can be very off putting!

    Your cornering is good, but don’t watch the bikes in front of you too much look down the track at your lines & openings where you might be able to pass them. Act like you are the only one on the track & everyone else must speed up or get out of your was. I liked the pass you did

    • @staceonwheels

      Great stuff, thank you! Passing on corners is a future focus... I think I need more confidence with different lines, as we can only pass on the outside in blue group. But I can certainly do what you say and worry less about other riders 👍

    Hi from a 62YOSWM in U.S.A. Near D.C. I really enjoy your Vids. My Dad that was my Best Friend used to tell me when I raced “On the Gas, or On the Brakes” anything else & your just coasting. & no one wins a race by just “Coasting” but stay safe. Wide open on the Gas & Braking fast can be dangerous

    • @staceonwheels
      @staceonwheels Месяц назад

      They run 1 or 2 recreational ride days a month. The attitude is overwhelming positive and supportive. I'm sure there is friendly competition but prob only in the fast groups. I you haven't been there you may have to do the induction group first time. Try it... your SF will love it.

    Hi Stace. One last question. I have the frios installed. Immediathbadter turning on the bike the right grip began getting hot knnits own. I haven't even taken it to the dealer yet to turn them on. Have you heard if this is normal or did I possibly wire it wrong?

    • @staceonwheels

      My guess is you could plugged it into the wrong part of the loom. This is something the dealer will hopefully work out with you. Mine just plugged in and worked onl after dealer activation. Good luck!

    Hi Stace - thanks for your video I think pre-buying pushrods is a bit of a lesson that everyone has to learn it is much better to wait until you can put everything together and then measure the length you need Can I suggest that you set the adjusters on the rockers to the middle of their range and then use the mid-lift method to get the correct push rod length Good luck - have fun will look forward to your next video 👍👍

    • @staceonwheels
      @staceonwheels Месяц назад

      Thank you, and yes, what a lesson. The pushrods came as part of my cam kit, which was supposed to save a bit of money, but now costs more! 😂 Yep, I ended up setting the adjusters mid way to get a better pushrod length... then there's the trick of how to measure a pushrod's length...
